It was a dead end for Hector.
Everywhere you looked, Hector soldiers were running towards him. Their faces were twisted with fear and anger.
“Kill him now!”
“Stop that man, or the gate will fall!”
“Attack! All of you, attack!”
Hector was in deep trouble.
All because of one man.
They could not close the gate.
If the Cairo army came through while the gate was open, Hector would be finished. So, Hector’s soldiers attacked with everything they had.
It was a terrifying sight.
Soldiers filled his vision, all rushing at him with hate in their eyes. Most people would be scared, but Roman’s eyes stayed calm.
He had seen this before.
In his past battles, he had faced much worse. This chaos did not frighten him.
*Clang!*
“Ugh!”
Roman struck down the first soldier who reached him.
Blood sprayed as his sword cut through the soldier. Immediately, more soldiers rushed in. There was no time to rest.
He blocked a sword from the left, then another from the right. Someone jumped from above, but Roman was ready.
Enemies were all around him.
Roman fought on and on.
His senses were sharp. He could see and feel attacks coming even from behind him.
*Clang!*
“Ugh.”
He turned quickly and stabbed his sword up under the chin of a soldier behind him.
Roman pulled his sword free, flicking off the blood. At the same moment, an aura swordsman charged, his sword glowing. Roman met him head-on. The swordsman, who had trained for years to reach the second level of aura, was cut down in an instant. His head fell to the ground like a broken doll.
It was a terrible scene.
Roman fought like a storm, cutting down every enemy. The Hector soldiers were trapped, with nowhere to run. They knew they would likely die, but they kept fighting.
This was the last stand.
If they lost here, Hector would fall. So, they had to stop Roman, even if it meant death.
Soon, the ground around Roman was soaked in blood.
The blood flowed like a river, turning the moat red. Still, neither Roman nor the Hector soldiers gave up.
But Roman was just a man.
The Hector soldiers hoped he was tired from his fight with Butler. They believed he would soon run out of energy fighting so many of them.
They attacked again and again, like waves crashing on the shore.
They were sacrificing themselves to wear him down.
Each time Roman breathed, another Hector soldier fell dead.
But even Roman knew.
*’I can’t keep this up forever.’*
Just as the Hector soldiers hoped, Roman was very tired.
The fight with Butler had been hard, and Roman had used all his power to win.
But Roman knew how to fight for a long time.
He had fought for days before, and he knew that the one who ran out of strength first would die.
He felt a pain in his core.
His energy was fading. He had to use the Star-Devouring Art.
“You will die!”
A Hector knight, glowing with aura, charged at him.
Roman let the knight’s sword hit his own. As the swords clashed, Roman pulled the knight’s energy into himself.
*Whoosh.*
It was like an unseen wind.
The knight’s eyes widened in shock. Before he could understand what was happening, Roman’s sword flashed, and the knight’s head fell.
*’This is only for now,’* Roman thought.
This was the Star-Devouring Art.
It was a dark and forbidden skill, feared in Murim. It let a strong fighter steal energy from others.
But using it too much was dangerous. It could make you lose your mind and damage your inner energy.
So, Roman didn’t keep the stolen energy inside him.
He used it right away, like a quick boost of power, to save his own energy.
The Hector soldiers could not understand.
How was Roman still fighting?
They attacked and attacked, but he didn’t weaken. Their faces changed from anger to fear and shock.
Bodies lay everywhere, stacked like hills.
A terrible feeling grew in the hearts of the Hector soldiers.
They started to think, *’Could this one man really break through our gate? Is this monster going to defeat us?’*
This was a disaster they had never thought possible.
The Hector soldiers couldn’t believe that their kingdom was falling because of a single person.
So, even though they knew they would die, they kept charging at Roman.
* * *
High on the fortress wall, Edwin Hector looked out.
He saw the Cairo army rushing forward like a flood. He finally understood how badly he had failed.
*’…No, deep down, I knew this would happen.’*
He had been a fool.
He was useless.
A commander should stay calm, no matter what. But when he saw Butler fall, covered in blood, Edwin had panicked.
Roman was right there, at the gate.
Edwin had made a stupid decision. He thought he could save Butler quickly, and his soldiers had followed him without question.
They all felt the same way.
Butler was someone they looked up to.
They all wanted him to live. They had opened the gate as if in a trance.
And now, they were paying for it.
Screams rose from below. Edwin knew the Cairo army would soon be inside the fortress.
“Hah.”
Edwin took a deep breath.
He knew it now. He was not a good leader.
He hated himself for leading his soldiers to their deaths. But he would not give up yet.
*’Maybe… maybe if we can just hold them back for a little while, we can still win.’*
*Whoosh.*
He gathered his magic.
The four magic circles around his heart spun faster and faster. With a wave of his hand, Edwin unleashed his power.
“Rune Flare!”
*BOOM!*
*WHOOSH!*
Fire exploded outwards. The Cairo soldiers screamed as flames wrapped around them. In moments, dozens were charred and lifeless on the ground.
Dozens died instantly.
Hundreds more stumbled back, burned and wounded. One attack showed the terrible power of a wizard.
Wizards were known as the kings of defense.
People said you should never attack a place defended by wizards. Edwin Hector was showing them why.
“Rune Flare!”
“Fire Ball!”
*BOOM!*
*WHOOSH!*
Beside Edwin, other Hector wizards joined in.
Together, they unleashed a storm of fire. Flames exploded everywhere, stopping the Cairo army from moving forward easily.
But then, the Cairo commander, Count Fabius, roared, his face red with anger.
He was worried about Roman. Every second they waited was dangerous for him.
“Spread out! Charge through the fire! The gate is open! If we don’t go now, more of us will die!”
“Charge!”
“Attack!”
The order flew through the Cairo ranks.
Cairo soldiers pushed forward into the flames.
They used the bodies of their fallen comrades to try and put out the fire. Even as the flames burned them, they kept going.
Some tried to go around the fire.
They had to reach the fortress wall, no matter what.
Edwin Hector had one more trick.
“Fire Wall!”
*WHOOSH!*
*WHOOSH!*
A wall of fire shot up into the sky.
The flames were so tall and hot that no one could pass. The Cairo soldiers who were too close were instantly burned away.
Edwin was pushing himself to his limit.
Hector archers, despite the danger from the flares, stepped forward and fired arrows. They fought bravely, trying to kill as many enemies as possible.
For a brief moment, hope flickered in the hearts of the Hector soldiers.
*Maybe… maybe if we can just stop that one man, Roman, and close the gate again, we can still survive.*
But then, *BOOM!*
*RUMBLE!*
A huge crash shook the ground.
At the same instant, Roman’s voice echoed across the battlefield.
“The gates are open!”
It was the sound of doom. Hope died in Hector that moment.
Roman knew he couldn’t just stand there fighting forever.
To win, he had to let the Cairo army in. He had to open the gate.
Quickly, he moved.
*Thwack. Tap!*
He used his lightness skill, leaping up the fortress wall.
The Hector soldiers were too slow to react.
At first, they just stared, surprised. But when they saw where he was going, they screamed in panic.
“No!”
“Stop him, stop him!”
Roman’s target was clear.
The lever that controlled the gate.
He killed the guard with one swift strike. Then, with a burst of aura, he smashed the lever.
*Thwack!*
*Crack!*
The gate mechanism broke.
Roman saw the huge gate shudder. He then sliced through the heavy iron chains holding it up.
*WHAM!*
*RUMBLE!*
The gate crashed down.
It slammed into the moat with a deafening roar. Roman looked back, making sure it was open, and then shouted with all his might.
“The gates are open!”
Roman’s voice cut through the noise of battle.
The Cairo soldiers, who had been unsure about attacking, roared with joy when they heard him.
“Waaaaaah!”
“Charge! Charge through the gate!”
“Finish off the rest of Hector!”
It was finished.
The fortress wall was no longer important.
Now that the Cairo army could pour through the gate, Hector had no defense left.
*’My job here is done,’* Roman thought.
He could have retreated now.
But he didn’t.
Even with the gate open, Roman kept climbing the stairs, fighting off any Hector soldiers in his way.
The Hector soldiers stared at him, confused.
Why?
Why wasn’t this monster running away?
When he reached the top of the wall, Roman looked around. His eyes stopped on one person.
*Edwin Hector.*
The Hector commander.
He was Roman’s next goal.
The gate was broken. It had been from the beginning.
The war was almost lost.
Edwin Hector felt many things at once. He knew defeat was coming.
*’Where did it all go wrong?’*
His plan had seemed so good.
They had taken the enemy’s base behind their lines. That showed he wasn’t a bad commander, right?
Then, suddenly, there he was.
“Edwin Hector!”
Roman Dmitry.
He stood before him.
The soldiers who had tried to stop him were dead, their bodies scattered. Blood still dripped from Roman’s sword.
Edwin’s eyes were red and tired as he stared at Roman.
*’Yes, Roman Dmitry. It’s all his fault.’*
There was no other reason for this disaster.
Roman had stopped them at the 5th defense line. He had led his men in sneaky attacks, hurting Hector again and again.
Thousands of Hector soldiers had died because of him.
Edwin’s plan had fallen apart from the start. He had finally taken back the front lines, but then Roman, like a ghost, had appeared again and opened the gate. Now he was here, right in front of him.
If there was a god watching, Edwin wanted to ask him one question.
Why had he made Edwin, the “star of Hector,” only to send Roman Dmitry to destroy him?
It was a total loss.
In every way.
Edwin Hector had never beaten Roman Dmitry, not even once.
“This war was a mistake from the beginning,” Edwin said, his voice hoarse. “The moment I knew you existed, Roman, I should have done anything to kill you.”
*Whoosh.*
He gathered all his magic.
The four magic circles around his heart spun wildly. Edwin focused all his will, and with a final gesture, he unleashed everything.
“Even if I die here, Roman Dmitry,” Edwin shouted, “I will drag you down with me!”
*WHOOSH.*
The magic circles opened fully.
Edwin Hector was ready to fight to the death.
