What is that?’ Felix wondered.
Flames of magic surrounded Roman.
Even with magic protecting his body, the heat was intense. Yet, Roman Dmitry charged forward, completely surrounded by flames.
There was no time to think.
He had to escape.
“Blink.”
Felix used magic to move through space. *Blink.* He vanished.
He reappeared ten steps away, but before he could even look around, he saw something shocking.
Roman Dmitry.
He should have been attacking Felix’s afterimage, but as if he knew what Felix would do, he changed direction and charged straight at him.
Only three steps.
He was right in front of Felix.
Felix gritted his teeth and quickly used his magic.
“Hold.”
He used magic to try and hold Roman’s feet.
This should give him 10 seconds.
He quickly stepped back, but Roman instantly broke free from the magic.
‘This is insane,’ Felix thought.
It was a series of unbelievable events.
He withstood the flames of a 4th circle fire magic with his body, immediately followed the Blink’s space movement, and now he released the Hold magic in just 3 seconds.
He was a monster. He did things that shouldn’t be possible!
Felix knew he couldn’t underestimate Roman.
There was a reason he was so confident.
Roman Dmitry knew how to fight a wizard, and Felix had no intention of giving up.
‘He told me to do my best. Alright, I’ll give you your 1000 gold’s worth,’ he thought.
Whirr.
His eyes turned red.
The Phoenix Magic Tower’s secret technique:
Burning.
He couldn’t fully use it, but he could imitate half of it.
“Inferno.”
Whoosh.
He created a firestorm.
Powerful flames spread everywhere, each one moving in a threatening way according to Felix’s will.
Flames that seemed to have a will of their own. Dozens, hundreds of flames rushed towards Roman from all directions.
It was a level of control beyond ordinary fire magic, and Roman couldn’t retreat.
But.
Wham!
Whoosh.
Flames rushed at Roman! He dodged. Just a tilt of his head. Flames exploded where he was a moment ago!
Without slowing down, Roman Dmitry broke through from the front.
It was as if he knew how the attack was coming; he completely avoided all the magic.
It didn’t make sense.
Hundreds of flames.
At least one of them should have burned him, but how could he move like that?
‘Damn it,’ Felix thought.
Before he knew it, Roman was right in front of him.
There was no way to escape, so he tried to use Blink to create some distance.
“Blink.”
He folded space.
It was a movement too fast to follow.
As his body reappeared twenty steps away, leaving an afterimage, Felix saw something that filled him with despair.
Thwack!
“Ugh?!”
An attack struck his stomach.
His eyes widened.
Roman had followed Blink and punched Felix in the gut.
Plop.
He knelt down, unable to think clearly. He was drooling.
Roman’s calm voice came from above him.
“Today’s sparring is over. I’ll see you again at this time tomorrow.”
Once a day.
It was part of their agreement.
Felix, after finishing the first day of sparring, looked up at the sky with a blank expression.
“…How is this even possible?”
Roman Dmitry.
Everything about him defied common sense.
The Rune Flare, which Felix had used to corner his opponent, should have been a decisive blow, but Roman had simply charged through the flames.
That was just the start.
Nothing went as Felix planned, and the more he fought, the more he felt trapped.
And finally, Roman’s ability to evade the fire magic was overwhelming.
Even though Felix had maximized his control over the fire magic with Burning, he couldn’t keep up with Roman’s movements.
‘Roman Dmitry clearly knew how my magic would work. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have been able to follow Blink twice. No one in the magic world knows of any magic that can predict other magic. That means it’s all Roman Dmitry’s own ability,’ he thought.
His heart was pounding.
At first, he had been carefree.
He thought that magic sparring wouldn’t be too difficult, and he could just stay in Dmitry and get paid.
He hadn’t expected something like today.
Even if Roman Dmitry was as great a swordsman as people said, Felix had been confident that he wouldn’t be outmatched in skill.
But he was completely wrong.
He couldn’t do anything right, and he ended up kneeling and spitting.
It was humiliating.
He was embarrassed to show such a sight, but more than that, he couldn’t stop thinking about Roman Dmitry.
‘Can I win if I fight again?’ he wondered.
He imagined it.
Roman Dmitry appeared in front of him.
He used magic against Roman, who was rushing towards him, but Roman’s nimble movements avoided every attack.
The study of magic is truly complex.
No matter how powerful it was, it was useless if the attack didn’t hit, and Felix knew how to corner his opponent.
But all those methods failed because of Roman’s ability to avoid every attack.
He couldn’t figure out how to overcome this, and in his imagination, he couldn’t find a way to defeat Roman.
Eventually…
‘I can’t win at all like this,’ he thought.
He was sure he would lose.
He knelt helplessly, even in his imagination.
But still, he kept thinking.
People called Felix a viper.
When the magic tower lord disappeared, everyone said that the Phoenix Magic Tower was doomed because the secret of Burning magic was lost, but Felix held on tightly and managed to use a part of Burning.
Felix stared at the training room, still smelling of burnt magic. Of course, it was a meager achievement, he thought.
But to have used even a small part of Burning was a big achievement. Burning was a very hard and complicated magic system, passed down only in one family. This showed how determined Felix was.
Three years.
Even though he was still new, Felix became the Master of the Magic Tower.
People still called him ‘acting Master,’ like he wasn’t the real deal. But Felix ignored them and kept leading the Phoenix Magic Tower.
And so it was now.
Irritation flared in Felix like a sudden fire. His fists clenched, and his jaw tightened. ‘Roman Dmitry,’ he thought, his name a bitter taste in his mouth.
He knew Roman Dmitry was strong.
From the moment he was overwhelmingly defeated, he knew that Roman was even greater than the rumors suggested, but he did not want to accept defeat.
Just as he had used a part of Burning through thousands upon thousands of experiments.
Felix had no intention of spending his remaining time being a mere scarecrow to be beaten.
‘I will win the next duel, without fail. I have to show them all I am not just an ‘acting’ Master.’
He stayed there, lost in thought, all through the evening and into the next morning.
The next day.
The second duel started.
Felix’s yesterday and today were no different, but he made a big change in how he faced Roman.
‘If the opponent can predict the movement of magic, then make the realm of prediction meaningless.’
This time, Felix made the first move.
He did not refuse the chance.
Felix, having gathered his mana, immediately put his plan into action.
“Stone Edge.”
Crack!
Rumble!
With a crackling sound, he raised the rocks from the ground. Dust and small stones flew up as the earth shifted.
Instead of using it as an attack spell, he put the rocks under his own feet.
As a result, Felix stood upon the rising rocks.
He quickly took a good position, and Roman Dmitry immediately jumped up to attack Felix.
‘Just as expected.’
A high position.
Not a very big advantage.
He knew that he could not escape Roman’s attack unless he used Fly, a 6th circle spell.
And yet.
There was a reason why Felix had taken the high ground.
“Inferno.”
Whoosh!
Rumble!
He unleashed a torrent of flames.
He did not choose a specific target.
The fiercely rising flames attacked everything around, making it impossible to predict where they would go.
A rain of fire blasted from the sky, each fireball hissing as it fell, casting a blinding orange glow over the training ground. How could anyone avoid an attack that covered the whole area?
Even Roman Dmitry, as strong as he was, could not easily break through the flames this time.
‘The strength of magic is that it doesn’t need to hit the enemy exactly.’
Even if you attack a 5-meter area.
The beings within a 10-meter radius are also swept away by the power of magic.
Felix aimed for that.
Attacking everywhere.
Even though it was not his favorite way to attack, he thought that there was no better attack right now.
“Fire Wave.”
Whoosh!
Rumble!
The flames erupted and roared, surging outwards like a hungry beast. The power, not aimed at Roman, burned the surroundings, and Felix constantly shot magic from the quickly spinning circle.
Roman Dmitry’s figure was not clearly seen.
The area below the rock was covered in flames, making it impossible to find him, but he didn’t think that such a strong opponent would fall so easily.
It was then.
Whoosh-
Roman Dmitry.
He appeared, breaking through the flames.
Seeing him floating in the air, surrounded by flames, Felix used the move he had prepared.
“Fire Cannon.”
Whoosh!
Rumble!
5th circle magic.
This time, he wouldn’t be able to avoid it.
The Fire Cannon was a fast and powerful strike.
Because he was floating in the air, he had perfectly trapped Roman.
Wham-
Rumble!
The magic exploded.
The flames of the Fire Cannon completely covered Roman’s body.
At that moment.
Felix saw it.
An invisible wall, like shimmering air, suddenly appeared in front of Roman, blocking the flames.
Felix could only stare wide-eyed at the defensive effect, which was like a shield.
Aura’s barrier.
It was a type of technique he had never heard of in his life.
What was certain was that the barrier had completely blocked the magic, and because he had used all his power, there was no way to stop Roman.
Thwack!
His head snapped around.
A powerful impact struck, and Felix fell straight to the ground.
It hurt.
His face and mind screamed, but his mind was consumed by one thought.
‘Was it a magical artifact? No. If he had borrowed the power of magic, there’s no way I wouldn’t have noticed the flow of mana, and more than anything, Roman Dmitry has no reason to go that far to win. He clearly formed the Aura’s barrier with his own abilities.’
A hollow laugh escaped him.
Just what.
Was Roman’s true identity?
He had racked his brain all night to defeat Roman, but he couldn’t even touch a hair on Roman’s head.
He felt empty.
A sense of self-loathing arose.
At that moment, Roman approached and said.
“Felix. The fact that I defeated you is not that important. I have something to gain from the duel with you, and that’s why a one-sided duel like yesterday and today is not what I want. So, don’t hesitate to use any means or methods to defeat me. If it’s a magical ability, I will allow you to use any method.”
Roman’s words.
It was a humiliating remark.
A hot heat soared from within, but Roman did not stop speaking.
“If you need help, get it. Call all the wizards from your tower. I don’t care. Just try to beat me. We will have a total of 180 duels over six months, and if you can’t corner me even once, I may regret choosing you, Felix, among the many wizards.”
In an instant.
His eyes were stained with anger.
The pain had not yet subsided, but he couldn’t continue listening to Roman’s words.
But then.
“Just once. If you win against me even just once, I will give you a reward of 10,000 gold.”
10,000 gold.
“10,000 gold?” Felix finally managed to say, his voice hoarse.
It was certain.
Roman Dmitry.
From the beginning, he had not regarded himself as ‘equal’.
