Harrison turned to his wife, a puzzled look on his face.
“What on earth is going on?” he asked.
“Honey!” His wife smiled brightly.
She paused what she was doing and glanced to the side.
“I was getting our daughter’s birthday party ready this morning, and then that man showed up with a group of people. I’m not sure what’s happening either. They said Roman Dimitri sent them, so I just let them help. I’ve been so busy getting ready for the party.”
“People from Roman Dimitri?” He followed his wife’s gaze to a man who seemed to be in charge.
His father used to work for Roman, so the name sounded familiar, but he couldn’t understand what was happening. ‘Why would Master Roman send people?’ he wondered. It was his daughter’s birthday party.
Because he wanted to know why, Harrison walked over to the man leading the preparations.
“Excuse me,” Harrison said. “Were you sent by Master Roman?”
“Ah?! Mr. Harrison?” the man replied, surprised.
“Yes, I am Harrison. But could you tell me why you’re preparing my daughter’s birthday party?” Harrison asked cautiously.
He felt like he was talking to someone from the Adelian family. The fact that the man was from the Dimitri family made Harrison a bit wary.
The man said, “I am Lucas, serving Master Roman. Hey, no need to look so worried! It’s not a problem. Master Roman sent me and these people to thank Mr. Hans. So, why don’t you let us take care of everything for the birthday? This party is not just for your daughter; it will also help you as you live in the Adelian territory.”
“I don’t understand. This is unusual, isn’t it?”
Roman and Hans had a relationship between a noble and a servant. Nobles don’t usually take care of their servants’ grandchildren, so Harrison couldn’t accept it, even after the explanation.
“I understand how you feel. Just think of it as a simple thank you. Master Roman values Mr. Hans very much. It’s probably something he’s felt for many years. That’s why he sent us, not for any special reason, but just to celebrate your daughter’s birthday. Hasn’t your father told you about Master Roman? Mr. Hans deserves this kind of treatment.”
Harrison was surprised.
A person of value. The words stuck in his head, and he felt strange. ‘Roman Dimitri thinks my father is valuable,’ he thought.
It was unexpected. People remembered the recent changes in Roman Dimitri, but Harrison, Hans’s son, couldn’t forget how Roman Dimitri used to be.
An arrogant person.
Harrison’s friends used to tease him, saying that Hans was a servant of someone terrible.
Harrison had a good childhood because of his father, but he didn’t like seeing his father following Roman around.
Roman Dimitri, drunk and shouting loudly. His father looked sad.
So he wanted to do well. After graduating, he started his own business and changed his life.
He used to be known as a servant’s son. Now, he was a successful businessman.
He still respected others, but his current position was because he wanted to escape the past.
And now, he was facing Roman’s kindness.
Memories that weren’t so good came back, making him feel embarrassed.
‘When Roman Dimitri was acting badly, my father said he was just having a hard time but that he had a good heart. I didn’t believe it. I thought Roman Dimitri didn’t appreciate anything, and no matter how much his reputation changed, my father’s efforts were useless. But Roman Dimitri sent people to me because of my father.’
He felt emotional.
His father’s efforts were not wasted.
The fact that Roman Dimitri was directly showing his thanks made Harrison smile.
“The words ‘deserving of treatment.’ That’s good to hear.”
A kind-hearted child.
Now, he felt like he could truly believe his father’s words.
Harrison allowed the party preparations to continue.
Lucas told him to leave everything to them, and people moved quickly, decorating the party.
There was still some time before the party started, but some people arrived early.
“Wow.”
“What is all this?!”
“Did we come to the right place?” People’s eyes widened.
The outdoor party looked so beautiful that it seemed like a party for a noble family. People looked around in amazement.
If they hadn’t found Harrison, they would have thought they were at the wrong place.
Harrison explained that he didn’t know anything about it until this morning, but Roman Dimitri had sent people to prepare it.
At those words, people looked at each other.
Anyone who knew how society worked understood what this meant. ‘Roman Dimitri sent people for Harrison’s father.’
‘When did Harrison get such a strong connection? If I had known, I would have brought a better gift for Harrison’s daughter! Why didn’t you tell us you were close to Roman Dimitri?!’
They had heard Harrison say bad things about Roman in the past, so they didn’t think they were close. But if Roman was preparing a party for him, no explanation was needed.
“I’ll be back in a bit.”
“I left the gift at home.”
People quietly turned around. Gifts were needed.
Now that it was clear Harrison had an important connection, his position was not as ordinary as before.
There was a stir of excitement. People arrived one after another, all surprised.
Since they were all commoners, Roman’s favor was something that could only be embarrassing.
Now it was almost time. As the party preparations finished, people focused their attention on one spot.
Thump thump-
The sound of steady footsteps. Soldiers of the Adelian family were marching toward the party in perfect order.
If it had just been them, Harrison wouldn’t have been so surprised.
“Father?!”
In the middle of the soldiers was Hans. Harrison’s father smiled sheepishly as he was escorted by the Adelian soldiers.
Hans arrived in the Adelian territory in a carriage.
He felt like he was being treated too well just by that, but as soon as he arrived, the captain of the Adelian guard greeted him.
“We’ve been waiting for you!”
The captain of the guard had special orders from Count Adelian to escort Hans as soon as he arrived.
Even though Roman hadn’t asked, Count Adelian somehow knew and sent people.
“You don’t have to go this far,” Hans said.
It was his granddaughter’s birthday party, and he didn’t want to make a big entrance.
However, the captain of the guard pleaded, “Please, I beg you! If I don’t escort Mr. Hans, I don’t know what Count Adelian will do to me! I won’t ask for much, just until we get to the party.”
Hans felt sorry for the captain, knowing what it was like to follow orders, and couldn’t refuse.
So, Hans arrived at the party.
Just as people were surprised to see him, Hans was also speechless at the party.
“Huh.”
The party was amazing. The simple party he had imagined was not there. The wonderful decorations and delicious food caught his eye.
He also heard soft, classical music. Musicians were playing beautiful music. They were professionals. Hans was touched that they were playing for his granddaughter’s party.
‘Master Roman,’ he thought.
It was definitely Roman Dimitri’s doing. Roman Dimitri had told him to go to his granddaughter’s party the day before, and he had not only arranged a carriage but also this grand party.
Tears welled up in his eyes. It wasn’t just because of the fancy party.
He was grateful that Roman had put so much thought into it for a simple servant.
He was a good person.
People said that Roman had become cold, but Hans knew how kind he was.
As a parent, Hans always felt sorry for Roman and was grateful for the things he had done to repay him.
‘I’m getting old,’ he thought.
His eyes turned red. Hans wiped away the tears and saw a familiar face.
“Father!” It was his only son, Harrison.
As Harrison came closer, Hans smiled brightly and hugged him tightly. “Son!”
The party had a friendly atmosphere.
Delicious food, good music, and good people made everyone happy.
The people who were invited couldn’t stop smiling in an environment they usually couldn’t enjoy.
“Now, it’s time to open the gifts,” Harrison announced.
He and his wife took their six-year-old daughter and stepped forward.
They had planned to open about four or five gifts, but there were dozens of gift boxes on the table.
“The first gift is from my father,” Harrison said.
Instead of his young daughter, Harrison opened the box. Inside was a beautiful doll. His granddaughter laughed and hugged it.
“It’s a really pretty doll. My daughter has been asking me to buy her one every day, and it seems my father knew that and prepared it. Thank you so much. I think I’m having a special day because of my father.”
Hans smiled at his son’s words.
Opening gifts was a Cairo tradition. Following Hans, gifts were opened one after another. They were simple but heartfelt.
But Harrison, about to open a gift, looked embarrassed.
“T, this is…”
The box was small, but its contents were more surprising than anything else.
“This is a gift from Baron Conrad. It’s a ring with a ruby. It’s a very generous gift. I don’t know what to say.”
People started whispering.
“Baron Conrad?”
“Why would a noble send a gift to a commoner’s birthday party?”
People were confused. It was unexpected.
It would make sense if Roman Dimitri, who prepared the party, sent it, but Baron Conrad’s presence was too surprising.
But that wasn’t the only problem.
“This is a gift from Count Adelian.”
“This is a gift from Baron Lawrence.”
Gifts were opened one after another. Unexpected names were called out.
The gifts were wonderful. The nobles in the northeast sent amazing gifts, and everyone’s eyes widened at expensive things like ruby rings.
It wasn’t really a gift for his granddaughter. It was a gift for Harrison, or more specifically, a show of kindness toward Hans.
People were stunned. They were already surprised by the party, but they couldn’t believe that nobles were celebrating it.
They couldn’t understand what was happening. ‘Why are those nobles sending gifts to Harrison?’
People didn’t know that, six hours ago, the nobles in the northeast were in a panic because of some news.
