Silence hung heavy in the air.
Count Fabius had left. Edwin Hector spoke, his voice showing he could not believe it. “King Redford, what do you think? Does King Redford really think Dimitri can fight the Chronos Empire alone?”
It was a question with no real answer. Edwin Hector and King Redford both knew this. It did not make sense. Even though Dimitri had done amazing things, against Chronos, it might not be enough.
King Redford began to speak. “I am confused, yes. My mind tells me this is impossible. But Redford has decided. Roman Dimitri has helped Redford greatly. Whatever Dimitri chooses, Redford will be with him.”
He stood up. He stopped thinking about all the details. “When Redford was in trouble, I thought a lot about the future. The world is changing fast. Soon, every kingdom will have to choose. Will they hold onto the Empire to live a little longer? Or will they fight against them? Even if following Dimitri destroys us, Redford must not lose what it means to be Redford. So, Hector, you must decide what Hector will do. Dimitri has declared war. We cannot go back on our words now.”
His words were honest. King Redford left. Edwin Hector was alone and silent.
“What should Hector do?”
Dimitri.
Hector was allied with Dimitri. That was still true. But Dimitri’s actions were so bold they could destroy everything.
If there was even a small chance that made sense, he would not be so worried. This decision was hard even for Edwin Hector, who people said was a genius. That is why, even though he decided to follow Dimitri, he was still very worried.
Hector felt trapped. He knew the ongoing hunger and war meant one wrong choice could destroy them. Edwin Hector thought about all the different things that could happen for a long time.
“King Redford is right. Hector cannot become Chronos’s servant in the future.”
Chronos caused the hunger. Hector could not accept living under their rule. So, Roman Dimitri was the only hope.
If so.
What should Hector do?
As Roman Dimitri said, was it right to step back and observe the situation?
“I need to understand why Dimitri did this. Why didn’t he come to the meeting? It’s simple. He knew the kingdoms would not agree to fight Chronos with him. So, now Dimitri is fighting Chronos alone. Why would he want us to go back to the meeting?'”
He thought more deeply. He did not just want to wait and see what happened. He wanted to find the best thing to do now.
“Dimitri must want to show the kingdoms how serious they are. He wants to prove that even he alone can hurt Chronos. Everyone thinks this is impossible. So, if Dimitri does even one important thing, it will cause a huge change, bigger than ever before.”
His mind cleared.
Even if this wasn’t the right answer.
He was certain that it was a choice for Dimitri.
It seemed.
He would have to attend the international conference again.
* * *
It was strange. The last meeting had been a disaster. But this meeting was starting the same way, with the same people.
King Odelia spoke. “Wait, what? Dimitri declaring war has nothing to do with you two? So, Dimitri is really going to fight the Chronos Empire all by himself?” Her eyes went wide.
She had seen the news about the war and thought things were finally happening. But Edwin Hector’s words were not what she expected. “We don’t know much. After the last meeting, we were waiting to see Dimitri when we heard he had declared war on the Chronos Empire. That’s why we are here. Haven’t you Kings heard about this?” He was hiding what he really thought. He acted like he knew nothing about Dimitri’s plans and was not part of it.
The kings’ expressions became serious.
In particular, King Odelia was more shocked because she did not know that this would happen.
“Dimitri is totally crazy! Even if all the kingdoms worked together, it might not be enough! And he’s attacking Chronos alone! Everyone, we need to be careful now! Chronos will never forget this. Anyone who fights them will pay. Dimitri is from Cairo, so Cairo and Dimitri will be destroyed for sure. The problem is, if Cairo and Dimitri fall, it will hurt all of us!”
Kingdom Alliance.
They were created to fight against the Chronos Empire.
Cairo and Dimitri were not included in the first place, but that did not mean that their existence was meaningless.
“If Chronos takes over the northeast, they will have a perfect place to attack the rest of the continent. And then they can focus only on us, the kingdom alliance, without worrying about anything else. Before, they had to worry about Cairo and Hector attacking together. Now, they don’t. Hector is stuck between Chronos and Valhalla and can’t do anything. And we, the kingdom alliance, won’t be able to stop Chronos’s attack. So, we must leave Dimitri now! If we lose even a little strength, it’s really over for us!'”
She thought this was the best decision. King Odelia was suggesting a way for everyone to survive. But King Redford said strongly, “No. I will not. Like I said before, Redford will be with Dimitri. We are not part of your kingdom alliance, so we don’t have to listen to you, King Odelia.”
“Now is not the time to be so stubborn!”
“It doesn’t matter what you say. Redford will get ready for war and wait for Dimitri to ask for help.”
He would not change his mind.
King Redford made his position clear. Then Edwin Hector added, “Hector agrees. If the war gets bigger, we will also support Dimitri.”
“Good heavens!”
King Odelia burst into anger.
The other kings added their words, but King Redford and Edwin Hector did not accept their opinions.
This meeting was a failure to understand each other. The other kings thought Redford and Hector had come to the meeting because they wanted things to change. But Redford and Hector only showed that they were surprised by Dimitri’s war and would not change their minds.
If so, it was a really big problem.
Dimitri’s strength alone would never be enough to face Chronos, so they had to prepare for the situation after their downfall.
Suddenly, King Odelia slammed her hand on the table. “Meeting over! From now on, everyone for themselves!” King Odelia stood up and stormed out. The Second International Conference was over.
Again, the leaders of each nation had failed.
It was a disaster.
King Odelia felt trapped. He could see no way to escape the coming danger, and his hands shook with worry.
“If this keeps going,” he thought, “it’s finished. When Cairo and Dimitri are defeated, war will quickly spread to all of us in the Kingdom Alliance.”
He felt a flash of anger.
“‘What were Redford and Hector thinking? Why did they promise to support Dimitri?’ He tried hard to find a good reason for their choice, but he just couldn’t understand why they would willingly walk into danger like that.”
From this moment on, everything changed. King Odelia knew he had to make a decision. He could not do nothing.
“‘If Redford is also destroyed in this war…’ he thought, his mind racing. ‘The Kingdom Alliance alone is not strong enough to stop the Chronos Empire in the future. I must choose. Should I help Dimitri and try to stop them from being destroyed? Or should I find a way for Odelia to survive by joining powerful countries like Chronos and Valhalla? The peace we have now will not last much longer.'”
“‘Damn it!’ he cursed. He was really angry. Roman Dimitri. He was more than foolish; he was arrogant.
Odelia knew Dimitri was a very talented swordsman, strong enough to beat Barbosa. But starting a war with Chronos just for revenge was stupid.
Odelia, and everyone in the Kingdom Alliance, hated the Empire’s cruel actions.
But history had taught them a hard lesson. When they had stood up to the Empire in the past, they had suffered terribly.
It wasn’t that they didn’t want to fight. It was that they felt they couldn’t.
The meetings of countries against the Empire were started by their ancestors, who had fought hard just to stay alive.
“‘…I’m sorry,’ Odelia whispered, ‘but Odelia cannot be destroyed. Even if it’s cowardly, we must survive.’ He closed his eyes tightly.
He knew it was shameful and weak, but it was the truth. He was a king. His most important job was to protect his people.
King Odelia went back to his palace and quickly called someone. A screen lit up, and Baron Charlton’s face appeared.
[Why are you calling so suddenly?] Charlton asked.
King Odelia looked straight at the screen, his face now hard and determined.
“‘…From now on, the Kingdom Alliance is finished,’ he said. ‘Tell me how the Odelia Kingdom can survive.'”
And Odelia was not the only one. In the Umberto Kingdom, leaders were also making the same choice.
Two of the three countries in the Kingdom Alliance, except for Frank, had decided to betray their promise after thinking about it for a long time. They chose what they thought was real life, not loyalty.
A few days later, in Rascal, a military camp on the east side of Chronos, guards were talking as they looked up at the dark night sky.
“‘I bet one gold coin Dimitri won’t last even a month,’ one guard said.
“‘A month?’ another laughed. ‘Are you giving Dimitri too much credit? This is war! How can a tiny place like Dimitri survive for a month? I bet one gold coin on two weeks. As soon as the real fighting starts at the border, Dimitri will give up and surrender.'”
“‘But what about Roman Dimitri? He’s supposed to be very strong,’ a third guard said.
“‘He’s just one man,’ the first guard replied. ‘How long can one man fight alone?'”
Dimitri declaring war was unbelievable.
Living in the Chronos Empire, these soldiers had never thought someone would attack the Empire first.
Maybe that’s why everyone was talking about it. They weren’t worried about Chronos losing, but they argued about how long Dimitri would survive against the Empire.
No one thought Dimitri would last more than a month.
The Empire was so much stronger than any kingdom; it was obvious to everyone.
For days, more and more soldiers had been arriving in Rascal. Within a week, everyone thought Dimitri would regret his words when faced with the Empire’s huge army.
Just then, as one soldier opened his mouth to speak, a strong hand grabbed his head from behind.
*Crack!* His neck broke.
It was over in a second. The guards fell to the ground, not even able to shout. This was happening everywhere in Rascal.
“‘We have taken all the places we needed to take,’ Chris reported.
Roman Dimitri stepped out of the shadows.
“‘The main Chronos army will arrive in Rascal in about 6 hours,’ he said, his voice cold. ‘Our job is simple. Until then, kill as many of them as we can.'”
Chronos, and no one else in the world, had ever thought Dimitri would attack first.
Roman Dimitri was using the same surprise attack that Dimitri had suffered before.
“‘Burn everything now,’ Roman ordered.
“‘Yes, sir,’ Chris replied.
In the middle of the night, while everyone was sleeping, Dimitri started the war with fire and blood.
