This was the third meeting between the kings, and the air in the room was thick with worry. King Odelia paced back and forth, his voice loud and anxious.
“I couldn’t believe the news this morning!” he exclaimed. “Is it really true? How could they get into Rascal and defeat so many soldiers in just one hour? Roman Dmitry is no ordinary man, I know that, but this is unbelievable!”
“I can’t believe it either,” King Umberto added. “Ten thousand men. It’s unusual to attack Chronos first, but Roman Dmitry has shown that Dmitry wants war, not just said it. They’re really trying to face Chronos without our help!”
The destruction of Rascal was shocking news.
People thought Dmitry would defend the west, like Cairo, but what happened overnight was a surprise.
It was terrible that a small group had killed ten thousand men. It made no sense to invade Chronos’ territory first.
They wondered, what kind of man was Roman Dmitry?
Chronos was a powerful empire that everyone feared. But Roman Dmitry, from a small, weak country, was not afraid. He showed no fear.
King Franck spoke.
“This attack makes me think that Chronos might not be as strong as we believe,” he said. “Roman Dmitry decided not to ask for help from the Kingdom Alliance. Why? Maybe he wants to show us that Dmitry can fight Chronos alone. Maybe he wants us to believe in him. And he showed us that Chronos can be beaten by destroying Rascal’s army.”
His face turned red with excitement as he understood what had happened.
King Franck had not understood Roman Dmitry before. But now, he saw a chance to win.
King Franck’s words surprised them. The two kings reacted angrily.
“What are you talking about!” one of them shouted. “Absolutely not! It’s Chronos! Do you think things will change much just because they lost ten thousand soldiers? Rascal’s soldiers are only a small part of Chronos’ entire army.”
The other king agreed, “You are right, King Franck. Roman Dmitry has done something amazing, something no one has done before. But maybe it also means that the only way to even have a chance to win is to take huge risks like this. Look at history. Many people have been unhappy with Chronos and spoken out against them. But they all died young.”
Their reaction was too strong.
King Franck’s words made sense, but the two kings could not accept them.
Even though King Franck’s words made sense, the other two kings could not accept them. After the second meeting ended, they contacted the Chronos Empire.
They could no longer side with Dmitry.
However, King Franck did not back down.
“No. I think differently,” he said.
“As you know, the Phoenix Magic Tower, which used to be part of Franck, now belongs to Dmitry. I was a little sad about that. But then I sent someone to check, and I learned that the Phoenix Magic Tower was growing very fast in Dmitry.”
“Then I realized that Franck and Dmitry are very different. If Dmitry can achieve more than Franck, even in the same situation, then maybe they can do something impossible. Maybe they can defeat Chronos, which everyone thought was impossible.”
“Besides, everyone is talking about…”
“The most important reason for King Franck was why Roman Dmitry said he was going to war.”
“Roman Dmitry always protects people he considers his own. I don’t want to live in fear of Chronos anymore. I want to follow Dmitry if there’s even a small chance to win.”
“It can’t be, King Franck!”
Chaos erupted.
The meeting, which was supposed to be for sharing ideas, became a desperate attempt by the two kings to convince King Franck.
Neither side yielded an inch.
Franck wanted the whole Kingdom Alliance to join him, but the others disagreed so strongly that he had to leave angrily, like Redford did before.
“I’m sorry, but I need to talk to Dmitry,” King Franck said.
Thus, King Franck left the place. The third international conference also ended in disaster.
Ruined. That was what King Odelia thought after the meeting.
The international conference was now useless. It was just a small alliance of two countries, not really an international conference at all.
What should he do?
If Franck joined Dmitry, then it wouldn’t just be about destroying Dmitry anymore.
‘If the Dmitry Alliance is defeated, the Chronos Empire will conquer the continent.’
Even knowing the problem, there was no other choice.
King Odelia contacted the Chronos Empire to survive.
“The situation is bad. Dmitry now has Cairo, Redford, Hector, and Franck on their side. The war with Dmitry is getting bigger, like a war across the whole continent. And I heard that Rascal’s ten thousand soldiers were destroyed in a surprise attack. Please tell me what to do. What must Odelia do to survive?”
It was a desperate question.
Baron Charlton, on the other side of the screen, spoke with a relaxed face.
“[King Odelia, you are starting with the wrong idea.]”
“What do you mean?” King Odelia asked.
“[Even if the entire Kingdom Alliance supports Dmitry, the Chronos Empire will continue this war. The Emperor was furious about the Rascal incident. The army they are gathering is huge, bigger than ever before. Do you know what that means? It’s not just about punishing Dmitry, but about destroying Dmitry completely.]”
King Odelia’s eyes widened.
If Chronos was putting all their effort into this war, then nothing the Kingdom Alliance did would matter.
He was worried that Chronos might not be serious about the war. If Chronos wasn’t fully committed, then Odelia, who had turned against the Kingdom Alliance, would be in trouble.
Baron Charlton’s words gave him confidence.
Relieved, he asked in a calmer voice, “Please tell me what Odelia needs to do.”
Baron Charlton opened his mouth as if he had been waiting.
“[There is something that the Kingdom of Odelia needs to do.]”
He knew it. Everything costs something.
A few days later, on the front line bordering Cairo, a long line of soldiers was approaching the first defensive line.
Baron Boras, who was in charge of the defensive line, rushed over to the person entering the gate.
“You must be tired from the long journey,” Baron Boras said.
“What is the current situation?”
“I sent soldiers to deal with Rascal and capture Roman Dmitry, but we couldn’t find any trace of him,” Duke Bamford said. “So, I have called the soldiers back for now. If Dmitry is attacked, he will eventually have to show himself.”
“Like a rat. Well done. No matter where he hides, it won’t change the big picture.”
Duke Bamford was a commander of the Chronos Empire.
He was a veteran who had won many wars and was known as a symbol of the military in the Chronos Empire.
Just seeing him step forward showed the might of Chronos.
About 30,000 troops, led by him, reached the first defensive line, and more than twice that number were still on their way.
He moved quickly.
He called for his officers and received the latest information.
“Right now, Dmitry is allied with Cairo, and they are gathering their forces on the western front. They seem to be preparing for a siege. They are getting supplies and focusing on magical defenses, so they are likely making a plan. But we don’t know Roman Dmitry’s exact intentions yet. Redford, Hector, and Frank have ordered their people to join Dmitry’s side, while Odelia and Umberto seem to be with us.”
“The world has changed. So many kingdoms are thinking of fighting against Chronos.”
“Roman Dmitry is the problem. After he destroyed Rascal’s forces, the Frank Kingdom thought they could stand up to the Empire.”
Duke Bamford smirked.
It seemed ridiculous.
A siege could only work if the forces were somewhat equal, but Dmitry and his allies were dreaming.
Chronos had gathered hundreds of thousands of troops for this war.
More than just the huge numbers, this was the first time that all of Chronos’s knights and mages were being sent into battle.
People often said that Chronos only showed a small part of its true strength in past wars.
But this time, the Emperor had made a decision.
Even if Roman Dmitry was a monster who could kill tens of thousands alone, he would now learn what a war on a national scale really meant.
The Chronos Empire had a long and powerful history.
Duke Bamford, who had been part of that history, could give orders with such confidence.
“In about ten days, we will attack Dmitry as soon as we are ready. This war is the start of taking over the continent. We don’t just need to defeat Dmitry, we need to win in a big way.”
“Understood.”
From that moment on, war was unavoidable.
Exactly three days later, a problem happened at the first defensive line.
“Ugh.”
“Cough, cough.”
At first, they thought it was just a simple sickness.
But then, more and more soldiers started getting sick, with vomiting and coughing, and it spread quickly through the entire force.
Baron Boras reported the news.
“Commander, something is terribly wrong. Since this morning, soldiers have been falling ill. They are vomiting, burning with fever, and coughing. It’s spreading fast. Already, ten thousand are sick, and about three hundred have died. Dmitry must be behind this.”
Duke Bamford immediately realized what the problem was.
“He used poison!” he exclaimed. “Order the soldiers to check and block all the wells and other places where poison could easily be added. And summon the mages of Behemoth. They should be able to stop the poison from spreading.”
“Understood.”
His face changed.
Poison, of all things!
How did he use poison?
Duke Bamford had seen this before on the battlefield, so he knew that the wells were the most likely target.
Wells were an easy way to poison many people.
So, he guarded the wells carefully, but he didn’t understand how they had gotten past the guards and poisoned them.
First of all, he had to solve the problem.
Duke Bamford hurried to the mage who was examining the sick soldiers.
“How is it?” he asked. “Can you cure them?”
The mage was from Behemoth.
His name was Mateo.
He was an expert in poison, and he had been brought along to deal with situations like this.
He said confidently, “Don’t worry. Poison is my specialty.”
“Good!”
Everyone trusted him.
Mateo, feeling the trust of the people, focused and started to remove the poison.
“Cure Poison.”
A light flashed.
Mateo raised his mana and skillfully used his magic to try and remove the poison from the soldier’s body.
Roman Dmitry was probably the one who used the poison.
But after getting the incurable poison from Baron Charlton, the mages of Behemoth were very eager to remove poisons.
Because of that, they were having some success.
The improved Cure Poison spell gave them confidence that they could remove any poison.
But ten minutes passed.
Twenty minutes passed.
Even after thirty minutes, the poison was still there.
Mateo, who had been struggling with the patient for a long time, looked at Duke Bamford with a face full of despair.
“…With my skills, it’s difficult to remove the poison. To solve this, we need help from the Master of the Magic Tower.”
He looked like he was about to cry.
He was desperate.
The poison used by Roman Dmitry was unlike anything he had seen before. It was a problem that could not be solved easily, or even with the magic they knew.
