The heart of the capital.
Turned upside down.
Soldiers were running around in chaos. The captain of the guard shouted loudly, “Don’t panic! This dark cloud just makes it dark for a short time. It can’t kill you! Stay in your groups! Keep some space between you and watch out. The Imperial mages will quickly get rid of this darkness in Marin.”
He was right about that. But. There was a problem.
Roman Dmitry used two kinds of magic together: Dark Cloud and Blackout. Blackout was the biggest problem for Marin’s mages to fix first. Also, spies had put magic things all over Marin to make the Dark Cloud stronger. Even though Marin’s magic was very strong, it would still take at least thirty minutes to fix everything.
Thirty minutes might not seem long, but now it felt like forever.
Whack!
“Kraaah!”
Within the darkness.
A scream echoed.
Just a moment ago, the soldier knew his friend was right there. But then, in a flash, his friend was gone into the darkness with a terrible scream.
He shivered.
His face was white.
He lifted his weapon, but he could only see blurry shapes of his friends in the dark.
Then, it happened.
Flash!
His head flew off.
Something suddenly appeared and killed him before he could even scream.
Death was contagious.
When soldiers saw their friends die, they were killed quickly too. It was like death spread fast.
At first, the captain’s orders worked. Marin’s soldiers tried to stay calm and fight the darkness. But then they saw too many of their friends dying quickly, and they knew something was very wrong.
Squish.
“Ugh, Ack!”
Underfoot.
A corpse was stepped on.
It was hard to see in the dark, but there were already many bodies on the ground.
Chaos started.
Soldiers screamed.
After that, no one listened anymore. The groups fell apart because soldiers were fighting each other to get away.
“No, stop! Stay in your groups, everyone! If we give in to chaos, Roman Dmitry will win!”
The captain of the guard shouted.
But.
It didn’t work.
The Dark Cloud made it hard to see, and it also made voices sound quiet. Soldiers near the captain tried to hear him and do what he said. But soldiers far away were too scared to think clearly, even if they stood back-to-back. The groups fell apart very quickly.
The darkness wasn’t total black, but it was still very confusing. It was enough to scare the soldiers completely.
How?
It didn’t make sense.
How could Roman Dmitry move so easily in this darkness?
The Dark Cloud should make it hard for everyone, but this monster running wild in the dark seemed like it didn’t bother him at all.
Suddenly.
The captain remembered a story.
‘People said that in the war with Hector, Roman Dmitry killed many Hector soldiers all alone in dark mountains. People were amazed by Roman Dmitry’s great strength and laughed at how weak Hector was. But that’s not the point. Even a strong swordsman like me can’t see him move in this darkness.’
Grip.
He gripped his sword tightly.
Nothing made sense anymore.
Roman Dmitry coming to Marin.
Doing this crazy thing all by himself.
The captain of the guard felt like his mind was breaking. Just then, a voice that sounded like hope came to the Valhalla soldiers.
“Moonlight.”
The Imperial mages.
Their magic began to illuminate the darkness.
Dark Cloud.
It would take time to get rid of it completely. But making light in the darkness was easier. Moonlight. The darkness went away. It wasn’t perfect, but they could start to see around them, like a bright moon had come out.
“Ughh…”
“I-Is this all dead bodies?”
People opened their eyes wide.
They looked around.
It was a terrible sight.
Even though only three or four minutes had passed, Marin’s soldiers were lying all over the place, looking awful. No one could even count how many were dead. Just looking around, there seemed to be hundreds. And Roman Dmitry was gone.
“Roman Dmitry! Come out! If you are a real fighter, come and fight me!”
A Royal Knight shouted.
He knew Roman Dmitry wouldn’t listen, but shouting was all he could do.
But then.
“When I was moving in the dark, people always made the same mistake. They thought they had a chance when they could see.”
“There he is!”
“Attack!”
Roman Dmitry.
He appeared.
He looked strange, like darkness was moving around him. The Royal Knights and soldiers thought this was their chance and ran at him.
Roman Dmitry was doing this all alone. Even Ares, who beat the best fighter in Valhalla, would just get in Roman Dmitry’s way in this dark fight.
Roman Dmitry smiled.
He looked at the enemies running at him and got his magic power ready.
“Why don’t you understand? Darkness just helps me a little bit.”
Splurt.
Blood flew everywhere.
He smashed the head of the Royal Knight who was running in front. Then Roman Dmitry jumped into the middle of the enemy soldiers, making blood fly everywhere.
The enemies who had been running so fast suddenly fell apart. Roman Dmitry moved through the enemy lines, killing everyone who tried to fight him. It was a massacre. It was all on one side. He kept moving and killing, and there were terrible screams and death everywhere. Royal Knights? Thousands of soldiers? They were nothing to him.
When Roman Dmitry was called Gui Young, he had survived many dangers even worse than this. He remembered how that felt. When he killed many people in the dark then, people from Murim were terrified of the name Gui Young.
“Die!”
Rumble!
The captain of the guard ran at him. He was a strong swordsman. If he was from a small country, he would be very important. He was very angry and wanted to kill Roman Dmitry.
He thought this was the best moment.
While the Royal Knights and soldiers all ran in at once, Roman Dmitry seemed open for a second. The captain thought he could hit him, even if his own soldiers died.
And then.
He stumbled.
Everything went blurry.
Before he knew what was happening, he fell face down on the ground.
Blood came out.
He looked up.
He could see Roman Dmitry.
“It’s not your fault. But your leader made me angry.”
That was it.
Crack.
That was the last thing the captain of the guard ever saw.
Valhalla Imperial Palace. People there were very worried. They heard that Roman Dmitry was killing everyone. One of the leaders said quietly, ‘…Are we all going to die like this?’
“Who said that?” someone shouted angrily.
“It’s Roman Dmitry! Even Ares, his student, beat Caesar, Valhalla’s best! Who in Valhalla can stop him? Letting him into the castle was a mistake. With Roman Dmitry, normal rules don’t matter.”
Marquis Belphir roared, but the other important officials were clearly worried. They couldn’t hide their fear.
Just a short time before, an Imperial Knight had announced Roman Dmitry’s arrival. They let him in because the Valhalla Emperor ordered it.
The officials’ angry words were actually criticizing the Emperor, but he was too scared to think clearly at that moment.
Usually, the Emperor would have them killed for speaking like that.
Marquis Belphir watched the Valhalla Emperor, expecting him to be angry. But strangely, the Emperor didn’t seem to care.
“You fools,” the Valhalla Emperor chuckled. He leaned back in his chair and crossed his legs.
“Roman Dmitry always does things nobody expects. Remember the war with Chronos? He charged alone into 300,000 soldiers and killed a powerful mage! I knew then that something like this might happen. Dmitry is small, but when one person is so strong, even an Emperor can be assassinated.”
Assassination. A quick way to end a war.
Especially with someone as strong as Roman Dmitry.
If he killed the Valhalla Emperor, it could easily cause chaos and rebellion in Valhalla.
The Emperor knew this could happen. Being a ruler is a difficult and dangerous job. The Valhalla Emperor wasn’t foolish enough to ignore this possibility.
“Now that Roman Dmitry is in Marin, he will definitely come here,” the Emperor said firmly.
The officials became even more anxious. If Roman Dmitry really showed up, they knew they might die.
Just then… *Creak*. The door opened.
Even though Imperial Knights were guarding it, the door opened, and a man with blood on his face walked in.
“So, you didn’t run away even though you knew I was coming? Does that mean you think you can survive?” It was Roman Dmitry.
* * *
The Dark Cloud trick was just to fool them. Roman Dmitry went straight to the Imperial Palace.
Finally, he was face to face with the Valhalla Emperor. Even though the Emperor looked thin and weak, he wasn’t scared like the other nobles.
Roman Dmitry spoke.
“I thought the same thing you did. From the moment Ares beat Valhalla’s best swordsman, or even before that, I wondered: Could the Empire stop me if I came here to kill you?”
This whole thing was like an experiment. Before fighting Chronos, he wanted to test how strong Valhalla really was.
“If you can’t answer my question,” Roman Dmitry said, “then you, Emperor of Valhalla, will die here today.”
He had a reason to assassinate the Emperor. The Emperor had done terrible things. Even if Roman Dmitry killed him right now, the people of Valhalla wouldn’t blame Roman Dmitry.
He walked forward. The nobles were terrified and moved aside, making a path for him.
Just then… *Step*. *Step, step, step*.
From behind the Emperor, swordsmen who had been standing silently stepped forward. These swordsmen were not normal.
As soon as Roman Dmitry was close enough to attack, they moved so fast they seemed to vanish and then reappear right in front of him! *Clang! Rumble!* They were incredibly fast.
Roman Dmitry blocked their attacks, and then, with unbelievable speed, he struck back, cutting down one of them. *Flash!* Blood flew everywhere.
His attack ripped through the swordsman’s chest. But even though his chest was completely torn open, the Emperor’s swordsman still swung his sword at Roman Dmitry! It was an attack that made no sense!
Roman Dmitry reacted fast and blocked it, but the swordsman kept attacking in a strange and unnatural way.
“Those are immortal swordsmen,” the Valhalla Emperor smirked. “You can’t kill them, no matter what you do.”
Just as he said, the immortal swordsmen didn’t die. The ripped skin on the chest quickly joined back together, and they pushed Roman Dmitry back, looking as good as new.
And then…
“Curse.”
“Curse.”
*Fssssss-*
Suddenly, Imperial mages were all around him! They appeared in a swirl of sand, and with evil eyes glowing in the shadows of their robes, they started casting curses at Roman Dmitry.
He felt the curse energy grab his ankles. They were using magic to weaken him, making him slower and weaker, not with something you could see, but with magic.
This was interesting. Of course. The Empire was stronger than it seemed at first. It made sense.
If rankings showed a country’s real power, no country would ever show their true strength in rankings! That would be giving away secrets.
So, even if Caesar was known as Valhalla’s best swordsman, Valhalla was an empire for more reasons than just Caesar. Immortal swordsmen. Imperial mages. These were some of their hidden special forces.
But… that was it? Just being immortal wasn’t enough to stop Roman Dmitry.
*Pat-*
The curse was gone. He broke free from the magic, cut down the immortal swordsmen in his way, and ran towards the Valhalla Emperor. Being immortal wasn’t a perfect defense.
Even the immortal swordsmen became slow and weak when they were badly hurt. And that was enough time for Roman Dmitry to reach the Emperor.
It was amazing to see. Even with arms cut off, chests ripped open, and legs gone, the immortal swordsmen tried desperately to grab him, but Roman Dmitry finally reached the Valhalla Emperor.
Right then… *Fssssss*.
The Valhalla Emperor vanished in a swirl of sand! Just like the Imperial mages had appeared, he reformed from the sand and reappeared on the wall of the room.
“Roman Dmitry,” he said. “This has been… interesting.”
*Swish*.
He disappeared into the wall. As he vanished into the wall, the immortal swordsmen and Imperial mages also turned into sandstorms and disappeared just like him.
Roman Dmitry had expected this. He hadn’t really thought he would kill the Emperor. Testing the Empire’s power was important, but his real reason for coming was something else.
It was over.
“Hic.”
Right beside him, someone hiccuped. The man quickly covered his mouth, but his wide, scared eyes met Roman Dmitry’s. It was one of the important officials.
And next to him… “…” Marquis Belphir was staring at Roman Dmitry, his face white with fear.
