Count Snodin could hardly believe what he heard. Roman Dmitry’s words hit him hard.
He stared at Roman Dmitry, his hands feeling clammy. He tried to sound calm, but his voice trembled as he spoke.
“…A nation of war criminals?” Snodin repeated, his voice a little too high. “Valhalla made a ceasefire agreement. We thought all problems were solved then, right? We came here to talk about the future of the continent. If you say things like this… I’m just confused.”
He swallowed hard, his throat dry with fear.
Something was terribly wrong.
Roman Dmitry was bringing up sensitive issues, and the others didn’t seem surprised. Their expressions were strange.
He couldn’t show any anger. He knew he could only leave this place alive if he acted like nothing was wrong.
Then, Count Snodin’s heart dropped when he heard Roman Dmitry’s next words.
“Count Snodin, the Valhalla Empire started this war. The war spread because Valhalla attacked me to hide their secrets. How can you say Valhalla isn’t responsible? To talk about the continent’s future, we must solve this problem first.”
It was chilling. Roman Dmitry wasn’t polite like the other representatives, and Snodin felt more and more uneasy.
It was definitely a trap. Valhalla had been brought here to be judged from the start.
Just then, Roman Dmitry looked over, and Lucas stepped forward.
“I will now share what the Dmitry Information Guild found. The conflict between Dmitry and Valhalla started in the southern tombs. We looked into Chronos’s past actions to see if they were involved in Valhalla’s history. We found that Duke Vieto was there when Stern Valhalla became king. The guard captain’s secret records showed a different story from what Duke Vieto said. So, we have to ask: If Duke Vieto was working with Stern Valhalla, what did they want from the rebellion?”
Soldiers passed out the evidence. There was the guard captain’s secret diary and information about Duke Vieto’s activities from different places.
“This is a sensitive issue, so I won’t guess anything. But we know that Duke Vieto led the Blood Purge on the day Stern Valhalla did. The rebellion, where it seemed like Stern Valhalla and Duke Vieto were enemies, was just an act. They wanted the same thing from the start. And Count Snodin, who is here, talked about many things with Duke Vieto, even back when the Blood Purge happened.”
Lucas looked at Count Snodin. He finished his report calmly, watching the Count’s eyes show his worry.
“That is all.”
It was checkmate.
The truth about Valhalla was out.
If Duke Vieto led the Blood Purge, Count Snodin couldn’t avoid being responsible.
Could he say he didn’t know? It wouldn’t matter.
The leader is responsible for what happens. And this was about how to treat a country of war criminals.
If Valhalla started a war to hide their secrets, then Roman Dmitry’s first statement was right.
He felt the blood rush from his face, leaving it cold and pale.
He didn’t know what to do. Then, Roman Dmitry spoke.
“Alexandro was terrible. He used black magic for his own reasons, and the continent became chaotic. Count Snodin, what do you think should happen to those who worked with Alexandro, so the continent can move forward?”
“…I am innocent. I just served Duke Vieto; I didn’t know what he was planning.”
He took a step back, even though he knew it wouldn’t help.
He had to say he was innocent to save his life. He had to say he didn’t mean for this to happen.
Roman Dmitry smiled.
“That’s not the right answer. Stern Valhalla and Duke Vieto wanted the same thing from the start, and Alexandro was in the middle of it. The Valhalla rebellion was planned. They pretended to be enemies, but they didn’t really try to hurt each other. Looking back, it was strange. Duke Vieto’s rebels didn’t fall apart, they destroyed Valhalla’s capital with only a little force, and they dealt with Stern Valhalla. You made all the choices with Duke Vieto. So, you can say two things: either you knew the truth, or you were so not good at your job and silly that you didn’t know anything while being in the middle of it. And no matter what the truth is…”
His heart pounded. Meeting Roman Dmitry’s gaze, Count Snodin felt a terrible heat in his chest, as if his life force was being burned away by those cold eyes.
“There is no reason to keep you alive.”
He squeezed his eyes shut.
It was just as he expected.
Count Snodin had taken power after Duke Vieto’s death, so he couldn’t avoid this. He couldn’t deny Valhalla’s secrets.
If he did, he would have to show the data from the tomb, and he would be killed in an even worse way.
His mind grew faint.
How did this happen?
He remembered being excited with the Valhalla leaders on the way to Chronos, talking about the future.
He was embarrassed now, but he thought giving up his pride was the right choice for the future.
But the result was terrible.
Count Snodin felt a chill, thinking it had all been planned from the start.
‘Even the ceasefire talks were planned. Roman Dmitry didn’t want to give me a chance. He suggested a ceasefire to leave out Valhalla while dealing with the Chronos Empire. He must have already had the data to trap us, and he tricked us completely. If I had known Roman Dmitry’s plan, I would have fought Chronos to the end. But now I can’t fight back.’
It was over.
But he couldn’t accept it. If he acted like he accepted it, he would be digging his own grave.
The only way was to try to get the public to support him.
Count Snodin changed his expression and raised his voice, because the other representatives were watching.
“This is not fair. Dmitry is not allowed to judge Valhalla. Neither are the other representatives. If you support Dmitry, you might be next. I deny all of Dmitry’s charges and will find a place to explain this as soon as possible.”
He stood up suddenly.
I tried to avoid what was coming, but it was no use.
Suddenly, WHAM! Smack!
My head slammed against the table.
Panic shot through me, and I struggled to get up, but a hand pressed down hard on my head, keeping me pinned.
It was Kevin.
Kevin pushed my face into the table and whispered in my ear,
“That’s enough. Unless you want your tongue cut off.”
Only then did I realize what was happening.
I saw the cold eyes of everyone in the room staring at me.
My fate had already been decided.
The chaos ended as quickly as it began.
Soldiers dragged Count Snodin away, announcing that the executions would be carried out together later.
Now, it was time to discuss the future seriously.
Roman Dmitry began, “First, we must punish everyone involved in this war, including Count Snodin. No one will be excused. Even those who helped a lot will be held accountable. We will use this chance to completely remove all of Alexander’s followers.”
“What are you planning to do after that?” King Redford asked. “Someone has to take over the empty positions.”
King Redford explained the plan they had prepared. “The goal of this war is not to destroy and combine the two empires. Valhalla and Chronos have been separate for a long time. To help each country recover from the war, we need to keep their original systems. But things won’t be exactly the same as before. Valhalla and Chronos will still be countries, but they will be controlled by the Kingdom Alliance and won’t have as much power as before. So, we will find others to fill the empty positions.”
I had already chosen a few people.
I showed the profiles of the most likely candidates to the representatives from each country.
“After talking with the two empires that helped us in this war, they suggested the people in these files. For the Valhalla Empire, there’s Baron Ayrn. He gathered the remaining forces and fought against Count Snodin when Valhalla started the war. Even though he is just a baron, he has a lot of support in Valhalla. For the Chronos Empire, there’s Joelson Croyte. The Croyte family has been respected in Chronos for generations, and they have done great things in this war. Both of these people will be seen as good choices in their countries.”
“It’s the best option for now.”
“The problem is that an empire is still an empire,” another king said. “Do you think we can control them even after they get their power back later on?”
Some agreed, while others disagreed.
Roman Dmitry answered King Umberto’s question with great confidence. “That’s why the Kingdom Alliance exists. The Kingdom Alliance will not only work for the good of the countries here, but it will also watch over the entire continent. Dmitry will do the same. If anyone tries to repeat the mistakes of the past, we will stop them with the power of the Kingdom Alliance. I ask you, Chronos and Valhalla, even if they do something bad in the future, do you think they can succeed?”
I had to admit he was right.
Even when Alexander’s plan was at its strongest, the two major powers of the continent were defeated.
No matter how much time passes, could anyone overcome Roman Dmitry, who would only become stronger? It was impossible to say for sure.
Roman Dmitry was the one who made it possible to win this war.
In the world he would create, no one could threaten Dmitry’s power.
Everyone there knew the truth.
If Roman Dmitry acted as oppressively as Chronos, no one could stop him.
Yet, Roman Dmitry spoke of fairness.
He suggested a plan where everyone could live together while protecting their own interests. Everyone knew it wasn’t easy for the strong to give up their rights.
Then, Edwin Hector spoke.
He had been quiet during the meeting, but now he said, “I have something to say.”
Edwin Hector began, “I agree with Roman Dmitry’s idea. If we try to force Chronos and Valhalla to combine, which have more than half of the continent’s population, the different cultures will cause problems. In the end, it’s better to recognize each other’s territories to solve the main issue. But before that, we must settle one thing clearly and move on.”
The world was changing.
In this fast-moving time, Edwin Hector knew what was most important.
“Chronos and Valhalla, which led the continent, have fallen. In the new world, we need someone to control the continent reliably to uphold the laws that everyone agrees on. This war was very unusual. The Kingdom Alliance was weaker, but Roman Dmitry alone led us to victory. I believe the relationship of leader and follower has already been decided. The leaders of the Kingdom Alliance had a separate meeting a few days ago to discuss this.”
His voice grew louder.
He was about to announce the decision of the Kingdom Alliance.
They had come to this conclusion on their own, without anyone forcing them.
Edwin Hector bowed his head and shouted, “My lord, become the emperor of the new empire and rule us!”
At the same time, the leaders of the other kingdoms also bowed their heads.
“Become the emperor of the new empire and rule us!”
Their intentions were the same.
The Kingdom Alliance accepted Roman Dmitry as the leader of the new world.
