The coronation ceremony ended very well.
Dmitry officially announced the start of the Empire. Representatives from every country were there to support him.
One important thing was about the Kingdom of Luna. Reports showed the weather in Arcadia was now good. So, Roman Dmitry agreed to what the people of Luna wanted and took Luna into his empire.
Luna’s Queen, Isabel, was missing at the time.
Taking over a country is usually a difficult issue. But Isabel had said she wanted Roman Dmitry to take care of Luna before she disappeared.
Because of this, everything went smoothly.
Dmitry did not take Chronos and Valhalla by force. Instead, he said that all of Arcadia beyond the endless mountains would belong to the Empire.
They had already talked about this, so Roman Dmitry thought it was best not to cause trouble by joining the two empires together.
It was the best way to end it.
Even though the Demon World was a sensitive topic, the continent quickly became stable under Roman Dmitry’s rule.
A few days later, at Dmitry’s house, Chris stood on the terrace, looking out at the garden. Roses of deep red and pale pink climbed the stone walls, their scent sweet in the air. But Chris barely noticed the beauty. His brow was furrowed, and he tapped his fingers restlessly on the stone railing, lost in deep thought.
‘What reward should I ask for?’
A few days before, during the ceremony to give rewards for great deeds, Roman Dmitry kept his promise.
Jonathan, the leader of the Knights, became the head of the Imperial Knights. Felix became the Archmage of the Imperial Magic Tower. Fernando became the captain of the Capital Defense Forces, and so on. People who had done great things, like them, were given enough gold to live comfortably for the rest of their lives.
Chris also got a lot of money.
The beautiful house he was living in was also a reward from Roman Dmitry. He would never have to worry about money again.
The problem was that Roman Dmitry’s reward didn’t stop there.
“I don’t know what you really want,” Roman Dmitry said. “I will give you fifteen days. If you need anything, come and ask me directly. I will give enough rewards to those who have helped.”
Choosing his own reward was unusual.
Chris could choose his own reward instead of getting a specific job. He had been worrying about it for days.
Roman Dmitry said there were no limits to the reward.
If people like Chris wanted to leave the guard and live a rich life, he promised to let them start a new life.
“Haa.”
Chris sighed. His head felt full, like a jar crammed with too many coins. Ideas and questions clanged against each other, making it hard to think clearly. Was he being greedy to want more than wealth? But what did he truly want? The thought felt slippery, like trying to catch smoke.
Chris had not fought in the war for a reward. He didn’t know how to use the enormous wealth he now had.
If he had a family to take care of, he might have thought about retiring peacefully.
But right now, growing as a swordsman was the most important thing to him.
However, he didn’t want to give up the reward.
After thinking for a long time, Chris stood up, leaving his tea almost untouched.
“I should probably talk to other people.”
The choice was not just for him. Chris thought that if he met the people who had already asked for rewards, it might be easier to decide.
The first person he visited was Count Fabius. When Chris arrived at his new land, he was taken to a very luxurious house.
It was truly amazing and gold! Even from the outside, you could see it was a very grand house. When Chris went into the guest room, even the teacups shone with gold.
‘Are even the teacups made of pure gold?’
It was definitely Fabius.
Soon, Count Fabius came in with a beaming face, wearing as many flashy things as the house had on the outside.
“Chris! Welcome!”
“It’s been a while, Marquis Fabius.”
Fabius was now a marquis, not a count. He had gained weight, and his face was shiny with oil, showing that he was living well.
Marquis Fabius sat down and smiled kindly. Chris was important to Dmitry, so Marquis Fabius wanted to stay on good terms with him.
“But why are you here?”
“Actually, I came to ask what you asked for in the reward ceremony. I can guess, but I think it will be easier to choose if I hear it from you.”
“Ah, is that what you’re worried about?”
Only a few people got to choose their reward, and what each person asked for was not well known.
But Fabius was obvious. The luxurious place was better than any war reward, so people thought Roman Dmitry had given him something special.
Marquis Fabius said, “It’s easy to tell you about the reward. I asked the lord for endless wealth and power. Just rewards aren’t enough to live a lavish life, right? So, the lord gave me this land. It belonged to someone who was removed during the Cairo rebellion. It’s a great piece of land with good soil and a gold mine. It’s been passed down for generations. It’s also in a very important place that connects Dmitry and Cairo. The lord said that if I do well here, my power and wealth will last forever. Isn’t that amazing?”
Fabius was originally a noble from Cairo.
But some people like him changed sides. Instead of selling their land in Cairo, Roman Dmitry gave them new land.
Dmitry not only grew in the northeast but also gained a little more land when the rebellion was stopped.
This was part of the deal with Cairo. The lands that no longer had owners were given to people who had helped, like Marquis Fabius.
Of course, not everyone did that.
As Dmitry became an empire, some people moved to Arcadia and started a new life.
“I mean, I will work for the lord for the rest of my life,” he continued. “I did help in this war, but where else would you find a country that rewards this much? I am ready to give my life for the lord. If you’re asking if I’m happy with the reward, I am very, very, very happy.”
He laughed loudly. His beaming face looked truly happy.
‘He’s really something,’ Chris thought.
Marquis Fabius had received a reward that secured his future. As Roman Dmitry said, he would live a life of wealth and honor forever.
What if he wanted the same reward?
If he moved to Arcadia and took good land, he might have even more power than Fabius.
However, he was not tempted.
Chris asked about something that came to mind. “But there’s another building being built nearby. What is that for? It’s quite large, so it caught my eye.”
“Ah, that?”
He grinned. Marquis Fabius lowered his head and looked at Chris slyly.
“I’m going to build my own group of wives! Isn’t that what a man truly wants? Haha!”
It was certain that Fabius was truly enjoying the rewards of the war.
The second person Chris visited was Felix. When he asked him the same question, Felix took Chris somewhere.
“What is this place?” Chris asked.
“It’s the site for the new Magic Tower,” Felix replied.
It was a large area. Workers were busy working, and Chris was amazed by its size.
“The Imperial Magic Tower was my request from the start. I wanted to build a magic tower that represents the Dmitry Empire, to find talent and create a system for training magicians in the empire. To do that, I needed good facilities and a large annual budget. The lord has given me all of this. He even promised more money than I expected.”
Felix looked at the new Magic Tower proudly. He felt emotional that he, who had lived in poverty in the Frank Kingdom, had achieved so much.
“I hope Chris will be honest with himself. Some say that the reward I wanted is good for the country, but it’s really just what I personally want. I want this Magic Tower to be the best on the continent. I will enjoy the wealth and honor that comes from it. It’s my dream to be remembered in the history of magic. I heard that Marquis Fabius also received a reward that was for his own benefit, so there’s no reason why Chris shouldn’t do the same.”
Rumors slowly spread. People were amazed at how well Roman Dmitry rewarded those who helped him.
He did what he said he would do. He executed Ares to set an example, but he also promised to reward those who had contributed greatly.
Marquis Fabius and Felix showed that Roman Dmitry’s words were true.
Chris didn’t answer. He stood silently, staring at the Magic Tower being built for a long time.
The last person Chris visited was Commander Jonathan. He was training and sat next to Chris, his face covered in sweat, during a short break.
“So, how is it now?” Jonathan asked.
“Yes,” Chris replied.
Commander Jonathan seemed to be thinking. Then he looked at Chris with a smile.
“Chris, the Dmitry Knights weren’t very good in the past. We barely kept up appearances thanks to you and me, but they were nothing compared to the entire kingdom. But things are different now. Everyone wants to join the Dmitry Knights, and the lord has agreed to everything I’ve asked for to improve the Dmitry Knights.”
Like Felix, Jonathan wanted to improve the system for the future.
“That’s why I’m so grateful to the lord. Most leaders on this continent aren’t willing to invest, even if it will help them. But our lord, the Emperor of the Dmitry Empire, is different. I asked for it as a reward for the war, but he gave us a reward that was better than we imagined. It’s everything for my dream and my personal happiness.”
The scene before him was beautiful.
Whenever Commander Jonathan saw people training under the name of Dmitry, he felt like he was in a dream.
“The lord is a truly great person. He gives rewards that are good enough that people don’t regret their sacrifices for Dmitry. Even though each force is getting stronger, no one dares to challenge the lord’s power. Chris, it doesn’t matter what you choose. The one we serve is so great and strong that he can fulfill all our desires. I hope you will honestly say what you truly want. You know it too. You’ve been talking to me and thinking over and over before coming to me. You know what you truly want.”
It was obvious on Chris’s face. He clearly wanted something, but he hadn’t realized it yet.
That was the end of his last meeting.
Even after the sun went down and he went to bed, he couldn’t sleep because of the confusing thoughts in his mind.
The next day, Chris heard unexpected news: Kevin had visited Roman Dmitry to talk about the reward before him.
