Patrice’s face went white.
His opponent was Roman Dmitry.
Roman Dmitry had destroyed Red Moon, the Central Government, and Russia simply because they were his enemies. So, when he said he might see *them* as enemies, it was a serious threat.
A cold dread washed over Patrice, like icy water. He felt the real possibility of death for the first time, a chilling certainty that went beyond fear. Patrice stepped back, his voice shaking. “It is true…” he began, speaking to Roman Dmitry.
“It is true that I followed the Maron Church and led this international conference, but it wasn’t out of malice. You know very well that there are countless people in this world who follow the Maron Church. They exist not only in France but also here, and there are devout believers among those who were shouting loyalty to the Great Han Empire just a moment ago. So why only me, why won’t you forgive only France?”
Beyond Roman Dmitry, he met the eyes of the believers.
Several people who had helped with the international conference coughed and looked away.
“Ahem.”
“Uh, well… we’re not like France. We didn’t really *do* anything.”
They shuffled back, creating space between themselves and Patrice. Their faces showed fear, not loyalty.
They ignored Patrice, who was desperately trying to find a way out.
Anger boiled inside Patrice. *They* were abandoning him? But fear was stronger. He had to survive.
Patrice was desperate.
No matter how angry he was, he had to appease Roman Dmitry, who was watching him coldly, in order to survive.
“Your Majesty,” he said. “I’m not denying all my mistakes. It was wrong to antagonize the Great Han Empire without properly facing the truth, but all of this happened because that cunning Sebastian deliberately deceived us. I believed that Maron Dmitry was the hope of humanity, just like so many people believe in and follow the Maron Church. I too believed that humanity could be saved according to Sebastian’s words. I was foolish. So please, please give me a chance to make up for my mistakes.”
Thud.
Pride was gone. Survival was all that mattered now. He knelt, his knees hitting the floor with a soft thud.
“Please, Your Majesty… have mercy! I beg you! I will do anything. I will live only to serve you from now on. Just… please, let me live!”
He was desperate.
Ignoring Sebastian’s shocked gaze, Patrice only looked at Roman Dmitry, offering him everything he had.
The way he trembled was truly pitiful. France was classified as a powerful country, but he knew that it meant nothing against Roman Dmitry.
Even Russia, which had a stronger national power than France, had been swept away at once for standing tall.
The room felt like an execution ground. The air was thick with tension, so heavy you could almost touch it. Every breath seemed loud in the oppressive silence.
At the sight of Patrice begging for his life, Roman Dmitry said coldly.
“The majority of the world believes in and follows the Maron Church. If I were to ask for their sins, as you say, they would not be without fault, but the problem is that you have the power to move a country. Patrice, only a few people have carried out evil deeds with unconfirmed truths. You led the international conference, and even if you were completely deceived by Sebastian, the truth of what you did does not change.”
“Y-Your Majesty! Please!”
“Mercy is meaningless. No matter how it happened, you are responsible for what you did.”
Sreung.
He drew his sword.
He turned his gaze to the people who had said they would follow the Great Han Empire.
“From now on, I intend to execute Patrice, who caused the division of humanity. Let those who oppose speak their minds.”
There was no answer.
Tacit consent.
Everyone followed Roman Dmitry.
It wasn’t just that they were afraid of power, but Roman Dmitry had already set a precedent for directly executing Dmitry’s demon.
Even if he was a successor, considering that he, the emperor of the Dmitry Empire, had unhesitatingly dealt with Kevin’s successor, this execution could not be seen as unfair.
Clear justification.
Appropriate punishment.
A system existed.
Instead of changing depending on the situation, he applied the same standards no matter who the opponent was.
He turned his gaze, looking down at Patrice, he presented him with a cruel reality.
“I will carry out the execution.”
It was over.
Patrice hurriedly got up from his seat.
Staggering and almost falling, he approached Sebastian, who was still in a daze, and shouted fiercely.
“You son of a bitch! You said Maron Dmitry! According to the contents of the Bible, you clearly said that Maron Dmitry would save this world! I trusted and followed you like iron, but what is this situation now? What the hell is it?!”
He shouted at the top of his lungs.
He grabbed his shoulders and shook him, but Sebastian did not respond.
“Damn it, do something. For the people who believed in you, stop that monster Roman Dmitry…”
Thwack.
His head flew off.
Blood erupted from his neck, a dark red fountain spraying across Sebastian and the floor. The metallic smell of blood filled the air.
Thud.
Roll roll roll.
Patrice’s head rolled across the floor.
With an expression still expressing injustice and anger, Sebastian looked at Roman Dmitry, who was approaching him with shaking eyes.
His mind was still confused. The truth that what he had believed in and followed for 20 years was wrong, the situation in front of his eyes where the tower he had built up was collapsing at once.
He felt like his mind was going to fly away.
Now that the tide had completely turned, Sebastian was unable to do anything due to the powerlessness that gripped his entire body.
Swish.
Roman Dmitry lowered his stance.
Making eye contact, his gaze was intense and searching as he looked at Sebastian.
“Before I execute you, there is one thing I want to ask. Sebastian, why were you so sure of the existence of Maron Dmitry?”
“…”
His pupils trembled.
He couldn’t understand what Roman Dmitry was saying.
“Don’t you think it’s a strange coincidence? 30 years ago, in the days when there were no signs of the Great Disaster, why did ‘The Biography of Henry Albert’ appear in front of you, a linguist? Even if that was a coincidence, among the contents that filled the book, only my name was damaged, and was it really a coincidence that there was someone who used restoration magic next to you in the days when the concept of skills was not even properly established? ROMAN was interpreted as MARON, but why didn’t the error get corrected even after the skills developed? If you look at a series of situations from a distance, there are more than one or two questions, as if someone made a script. Why didn’t you ever question your life?”
Moment.
Sebastian’s pupils dilated.
In a situation where he was listing questions, an ominous imagination began to smolder in his head.
He didn’t want to hear it.
He wanted to shut Roman Dmitry’s mouth.
Even if there was another truth, he felt like he wanted to die without knowing anything like Patrice.
But, death was not allowed.
Roman Dmitry got up from his seat and looked at an existence beyond Sebastian.
“Was it Andres? I’ll ask you. How did you get that skill that allows you to move through dimensions?”
For a whole year, Roman Dmitry had been watching the Maron Church. A strange feeling told him something was not right.
Roman was almost sure the Maron Church’s stories were secretly about him. But the deeper he looked into their secrets, the more he understood this was a complicated issue, not something easily solved.
It seemed like a strange coincidence at first.
Think about how the Maron Church started. It began when Sebastian somehow got Roman’s life story. Up to that point, it looked like just one lucky thing after another. But Roman noticed something strange: Sebastian always had people around him who seemed to give him hints and help.
There was the wizard who fixed his name after it was hurt somehow. And then there was Andres, who was very important in starting the Maron Church, with his unusual skill called Forced Summoning.
More and more questions filled Roman’s mind. These questions grew bigger and bigger, making him more and more worried.
Roman thought, “Long ago, this world didn’t have advanced technology. Even magic skills were weak. Wizards were very rare, especially right after the Great Cataclysm, a terrible disaster. So, is it just luck that someone back then had the power to travel between worlds? Is it really just chance that this amazing gift, something almost no one should have, was given to a wizard who just happened to be with Sebastian?”
Forced Summoning. This was a skill that could bring someone or something to you, using a special object as a link.
It seemed like Forced Summoning needed many complicated steps to work. But really, it was an amazing power to travel through space.
Years ago, even a single strong monster, called A-rank, could threaten a whole country. Forced Summoning was much too powerful for a skill from that time.
This all felt very strange to Roman. He saw how all these strange coincidences seemed to fit together in a way that didn’t feel natural. Because of this, Roman gave an order to Kim Pan-seok.
“I will go into the trap the Maron Church has set. While I am there, you watch their magic closely, Kim Pan-seok. See if it’s the kind of magic that could have existed a long time ago. Check if it’s really just a normal skill, or something more. I believe you are skilled enough to find out the truth.”
Then, just a short time later, Henry Albert vanished. Right after that, Roman heard Kim Pan-seok’s voice in his mind, using magic to communicate.
“[Roman, I don’t think this is a normal skill.]”
Hearing those words, Roman’s doubts vanished. He was now sure something was very wrong.
On the other side, Andres was clearly nervous. He fidgeted and his eyes darted around.
He quickly waved his hands, trying to calm everyone down. “W-wait, what are you saying? I don’t understand what you think is going on. The Forced Summoning skill? I learned it from the ‘System,’ just like everyone else gets their skills!”
It sounded like a good excuse. In fact, it was the kind of excuse that could hide anything.
Because in this world, everyone believed that any amazing power came from the System. If you said the System gave you a skill, no one would question it, no matter how strange it seemed. It was a world where you couldn’t easily say something was illogical if the System was involved.
Roman Dmitry smiled slightly. “If that was really just a normal skill, I might have believed you. But people in this world don’t really understand how skills work. The System just gives people powers easily. It makes ‘skills’ appear without anyone needing to learn how they actually work.”
“Yes, I know,” Andres replied. “Isn’t that what you yourself explained when you started the technology revolution?”
“Exactly,” Roman said. “Now, twenty years after the first Great Cataclysm, people are amazed even by the simplest new technologies I showed them. They call it a technology revolution! That’s why I find this even stranger. The skill you just used is not normal. It’s not just about the System making a skill appear. It shows you understand how mana works, like a computer operating system, and you can control mana very precisely. Andres, do you understand what this means? The fact you could use Forced Summoning even twenty years ago means you already knew how to control mana back then – the very thing people now call a technology revolution!”
Suddenly, everyone stared at Andres. They were confused. What was Roman talking about? They watched as Andres’s face became more and more serious. The air became so tense, people felt like they couldn’t even breathe.
“As I learned more about the Maron Church, more questions came up. Was it just luck that my life story ended up with Sebastian, who studies languages? And what about my name being hurt somehow? And then there was someone with Sebastian who could use Forced Summoning, a skill that shouldn’t have existed back then. Can we just say all of this is just chance? As I thought about all these things, one idea came to me. The first Great Cataclysm. I think it started because of beings called the Absolutes. They destroyed this world just for fun, out of pure evil. They wanted to watch humans suffer.”
Absolutes. Roman remembered beings like them from his past life. They were beings who attacked the Demon World because they were bored. Because of them, things changed in the Demon World, and later the Demon King decided to attack our world, the human world.
“To understand how you got this power twenty years ago, when technology was weak, we need to think about two things. First, someone must have gained something by giving you this power. Second, whatever you got must be something that was too advanced for that time. There’s only one group that fits both of these things. They are called special people, but sometimes they have also hurt humanity.”
Drip, drip. Blood fell from Roman’s sword. He looked at Andres with cold eyes. “Are you one of the Chosen Ones?”
Sebastian’s eyes went wide with shock. The Chosen Ones. They were strange, mysterious people. They were said to get help from the Absolutes, the beings who destroyed the world. They were supposed to save humans with their great power, but people always wondered if they were really good or bad.
Sebastian stared in disbelief. He had known Andres for years. Never, not even for a moment, had he imagined Andres could be one of those mysterious Chosen Ones.
Just then, everything changed. Andres, who had looked innocent and wronged just moments before, suddenly smiled. But it was a terrible smile, like his face was breaking apart.
“You ruined my plan, you idiot,” Andres hissed. “Roman Dmitry, I’m sorry it has to be this way, but this ends now.”
He took a step back, slowly. He moved his robe, letting it billow around him, hiding his body.
“Sebastian, it was fun while it lasted.” Whoosh! Power, like magical energy called mana, rushed out of Andres. It surrounded him completely, and then, in a blink, he vanished into another world.
It all happened so fast. Andres could control dimensions, so he wasn’t foolish enough to fight Roman Dmitry directly.
Roman Dmitry was incredibly strong, a monster who had even beaten an SS-rank monster. Andres knew he couldn’t win in a fight. And because Andres could travel between dimensions, Roman couldn’t follow him.
Suddenly, Andres was in a dark, black space. He was between worlds, in the space between dimensions. He was about to jump to another place, but then he saw something that made his eyes widen in shock.
Rumble! The space between worlds shook. Suddenly, a figure burst out of nowhere. Before Andres could even think, this figure grabbed him by the hair and yanked him back out.
Wham! Thud! He face-planted. Andres, who was rolling around pathetically, felt a rough hand pressing down on his head.
“Don’t you dare play tricks with magic in front of me.”
A fierce voice. It was none other than Kim Pan-seok.
