The students from Blue Dragon Tower quickly walked away. Ian was annoyed as he watched them go. Just then, a paper bird flew through the window.
“Get to the Headmaster’s office immediately!”
-Gonadaltes
Ian didn’t say anything. He thought, “Power is nice, but it can cause trouble.” This message reminded him of that.
“But why are you taking me?” squeaked the hamster in its cage, looking confused.
Ian had left him in the basement of the Black Magic School’s Magic Tower for some time. Now, Ian suddenly picked up the cage and came out, as if he had just decided to do it.
Ian smiled kindly and said, “I think I’ve been too harsh, even though I’ve been busy. I brought you out to show you the outside world.”
“-Hmph! Coming now, after all this time,” the hamster thought. He was secretly pleased but squeaked gruffly. At the same time, he felt a little ashamed of himself.
To be excited about going for a walk outside as a wizard!
‘I need to get back as soon as possible!’ He was starting to feel a slight fear that he might really become a pet.
“Have you arrived?” the Death Knights called out to Ian as they saw him from a distance.
Ian felt a little guilty, so he looked around quickly. ‘I hope there are no traps or hidden attacks,’ he thought.
Wooman was busy doing things again, because of Ian’s advice. So, if the Skeleton Headmaster wanted to attack, it would take him time to get here quickly. Ian wished he had brought Wooman with him.
“You’ve come. Sit down.” The skeleton, floating in the air, pointed for Ian to sit. Still feeling guilty, Ian sat down quickly.
But then…
“Why is he acting like this?” Ian wondered.
“Ah!” Suddenly, the hamster understood. It looked at Ian with hate and anger. ‘You said you would take me for a walk! But you brought me to the home of a powerful wizard!'”
The hamster understood Ian’s plan. It was clear and bad. If something dangerous happened, Ian would use him as a shield.
“It’s nothing,” Ian said. “He’s just upset because I haven’t taken him for a walk recently.”
‘Walk, my foot!’ thought the Skeleton Headmaster, looking down at the hamster with a mocking smile. ‘You should be thankful I let you live.’
The hamster was too scared to look up at the Headmaster’s cold stare. It knew how cruel the Headmaster could be.
Only a student like Ian could complain in front of him. The hamster couldn’t imagine what would happen to someone else, especially a magical criminal like himself, if they were disrespectful.
“Headmaster, I just gave you some advice…”
‘I attacked the secret places of those Sanguis people you told me about,’ the Headmaster said. ‘Most were empty, but we found some things in a few places.’
“Ah!” Ian suddenly remembered. He had told the Skeleton Headmaster about the evil god worshippers, information that General Hwacheon gave him.
‘That’s why he called me here,’ Ian thought, feeling relieved.
Come to think of it, the Skeleton Headmaster was a responsible adult and someone who cared for Wooman, so there was no way he would get angry just because he gave some advice.
Advice, you say?
“It’s nothing.”
Alright. I understand. Batnatz. Now, about the results…
“Wait, did you just say Batnatz?”
No? Wodanatz. What are you talking about?
The Skeleton Headmaster blinked his eye lights, pretending not to know anything. Ian felt suspicious but decided to let it go for now.
“What kind of results are we talking about?”
I found out that they are very motivated. And that they will start something soon.
Right after getting Ian’s report, the Skeleton Headmaster sent the Death Knights and other soldiers to attack the old holy place. ‘No need to wait,’ he thought.
The evil god worshippers were surprised and had to run away from the old holy place quickly, very upset, without much fighting.
Many papers and things were destroyed in the fight, but the experienced wizards and knights could still learn a lot from what was left behind.
The areas and cities that the Sanguis Order has been targeting recently, some of the plans they are preparing, and the individuals they are paying attention to…
They must have scrapped the plans. Still, the areas and cities they are concerned about will be quite useful.
“That’s good.”
No. It’s not good. You were among the people they are paying attention to.
“Excuse me?!?”
Ian was greatly surprised.
At the same time, Ian thought, ‘Do the evil god worshippers talk to each other?’
If the Prahgal Order or the Ksaksarigol Order had spread lies, it made sense that the Sanguis Order would be extra careful around Ian.
Ian had stopped their plans many times. Especially the Prahgal Order – they must be very angry with him.
Ian felt annoyed. ‘It’s not my fault I got in their way!’ he thought. ‘What should I do when I find them causing trouble? Just stand there and let them hurt people?’
“Don’t be too scared yet,” the Skeleton Headmaster said calmly. “It’s not like they are planning to kill you or anything.”
If the evil god worshippers were really planning to kill someone, the Headmaster would be more surprised. There were many people in the Empire that those crazy people hated more. Why would they try to kill a young student?
The list with Wodanatz’s name wasn’t a list of people to kill. It was a list of people they wanted to recruit or control.
“You’re the only current student on the list. Congratulations.”
“Wow… thank you,” Ian replied in a reluctant voice.
Even the 5th and 6th grade students couldn’t get on the list, but he did. He was more dumbfounded than pleased.
“What’s the reason?”
Well, as I’ve said a few times, it’s hard to read the minds of lunatics… It could be because you defeated the King of Ghouls.
“Indeed…”
Or the King of the Frost Giants. Or it could be because you defeated the anti-magicists or the magical criminals.
“I understand,” Ian replied, not wanting to hear any more.
He already understood more than enough. There were so many reasons that it was hard to guess which one it was.
Or maybe it’s because you’re a Dragon Contractor. Or maybe…
“I said I understand?”
Why are you getting annoyed when I’m explaining?
The Skeleton Headmaster made sure to point out every possible reason he could think of, as if he were taking this opportunity to vent his pent-up grudges.
“So, what should I do now?”
“Nothing.”
“What?”
“Nothing! It’s more dangerous if you try to do something in this situation.” The Skeleton Headmaster was serious.
“Those crazy people think Wodanatz is very important. It’s easy to see why. You have done many amazing things.”
“In times like this, you must act normal. If you try to trick them or be too brave, it could make things worse. Just act like you don’t know anything, and behave as you always do. Batnatz. Actually, I wasn’t even going to tell you this. But I know you. If I didn’t tell you, you would probably get into more trouble. So, I decided to warn you.”
“Didn’t you just say Batnatz?”
This time it was certain. Ian was dumbfounded.
Hamster. You tell me. Did I just say Batnatz?
“-No… you didn’t.”
See? He said I didn’t.
‘He’s so petty,’ Ian thought.
Ian wondered how a great wizard could be so petty. Did the evil god worshippers who were sharpening their knives to get revenge on the Skeleton Headmaster even know that their enemy was so petty?
Ian, who was cursing the Headmaster in his mind, decided to stop for now and ask the important questions first.
“Headmaster. But does Professor Beggerek know about this?”
“No. I haven’t told him yet.”
“Then can I tell him?”
Hmm.
Surprisingly, the Skeleton Headmaster pondered deeply instead of giving an immediate answer. It was an unusual sight for the great wizard, who always answered so coolly.
“You decide.”
“What?”
“I’m saying you should judge and tell him. If you think Professor Voladi will act calmly after hearing it, tell him, and if not, don’t tell him.”
“What do you mean?” Ian was confused and about to argue, but he saw that the Skeleton Headmaster was serious.
“To be honest, I still have some doubts about Professor Voladi. That’s why I thought about not telling him at all. But I decided to include him in the end. Anyway, it might be better if you tell him, not me. It sounds strange, but sometimes people ignore their teacher, who is very important, but they listen to their students.”
“I don’t think I understand him better than you do,” Ian said, honestly unsure.
‘What will happen if I tell Professor Voladi, ‘Professor! The evil god worshippers want to recruit me!’? He won’t be happy. He might just nod or say we should attack them first…’
However, the Skeleton Headmaster did not allow any further objections, as if he were annoyed.
“I believe in you. Believe in yourself too. Batnatz, with your abilities, you’ll be able to figure it out.”
“If you keep calling me Batnatz, I’m going to report you to the inspector.”
‘Why is Wodanatz looking so focused?’ Professor Kirmin Ku, teaching the second class for the 3rd grade, ‘Basics of Using Spiritual Body Clones,’ was confused. This class was not easy.
Many wizards could make simple copies of themselves, but very few could make really good copies. It was easy to make copies that were like empty bodies, using magic or simple tricks.
But making those copies act like real people, and feel real, was very different. To do that, you needed to understand your own soul and be able to split it apart.
But today’s class is just about the basic ideas of the soul. ‘Didn’t Wodanatz already learn how to feel souls last semester?’ Professor Kirmin thought. Thinking he might be wrong, he turned around and saw Wodanatz still looking very focused. His eyes showed he was thinking very deeply.
After thinking for a moment, Professor Kirmin called Ian. “Wodanatz.”
“Yes?”
“I know what you’re thinking.”
“Really?!” Ian was surprised.
‘Could Professor Kirmin have heard about the evil god worshippers from the Skeleton Headmaster?’ he wondered. ‘Professor Voladi doesn’t seem to have many friends.’ That was a nice way to say it. Ian doubted if Professor Voladi had any friends except for Professor Kirmin.
“You are trying to focus on making a soul clone right now, aren’t you? But I don’t think you should do that yet. Understanding the soul is hard enough. Splitting it apart is even harder,” Professor Kirmin explained gently.
The Illusion Magic School was unusual in Einrogard because the teachers were kind. It was very different from the Enchantment Magic School or the Healing Magic School. Professor Verdus would have made him try it right away, but Professor Kirmin didn’t. The point of this class was not to make clones right now. It was to learn the basics first.
“That’s not it.”
“It’s not?” Professor Kirmin was slightly embarrassed.
With his excellent illusion magic skills, this professor had rarely failed to read other people’s emotions. But the boy in front of him was an exception. His immense magical power acted as anti-magic armor just by its very existence.
“Then why were you so worried?”
“Professor. Perhaps…”
“Yes. Speak comfortably, Wodanatz.”
“Is there a way to find out what Professor Beggerek is thinking?”
“You spoke too comfortably. Wodanatz. Focus on the lecture for now!” Professor Kirmin scolded him, feeling dumbfounded. He felt like he had worried for nothing.
