The enemy army stopped. They were surprised because Macline had many more soldiers than they expected. Also, Luther Kyle, one of their strongest fighters, had been hurt and retreated. So, the enemy did not attack right away.
Everyone knew the enemy would be slow to move because their leaders didn’t always agree. But Logan knew they couldn’t relax. “Even if they are slow, they are still coming,” he thought, his eyes scanning the dark battlefield.
Macline’s soldiers, the Aegis forces, worked in shifts. Some rested while others watched, always alert. Logan and the other leaders, the knights, stayed awake almost all night. The air was cold, and the only light came from flickering torches on the walls. Every shadow seemed to hide danger.
“Has there been any word from Lord Geom-gong?” Logan asked.
“The neutral forces probably haven’t even gathered yet. It will take them at least another month to arrive. That must be why they are so relaxed,” someone replied.
“That sounds like forever to us.”
“We can hold out. We have to find a way, even if it’s hard. We’ve done it before.”
But Logan’s confidence couldn’t completely calm Patrick’s worry.
“But the Flame Sword and the Ice Magician are stronger than the Storm Sword or the Half-Giant. Can we really stop them too?” Patrick asked.
“Those guys can’t go far from the First and Second Princes. They are the reason for this war. We’ll only see spells from Juan Douglas sometimes, like yesterday. And we can handle that much…” Logan said.
“Yes, my daughter-in-law blocked it well. I’m glad I gave her that sword,” Patrick added.
“Daughter-in-law, you say?” Patrick chuckled, trying to hide a smile. “Yes, she did block it well.”
“Hoo, yes. Sorry for always sounding so weak. Let’s try to be stronger,” Patrick said, trying to sound more confident.
Patrick tried to be brave again. The next morning, Macline saw something different than they expected.
“Hey, cowards of Macline, look up here!” a loud voice shouted.
Everyone looked at the gray-haired giant. A red haze spread from his body as he started to move.
As the giant ran, the red haze turned into a huge flame. It looked like a red meteor rushing towards them.
Even people who didn’t know who he was quickly remembered his name. He was famous in the kingdom.
“It’s the Flame Sword!” someone shouted.
“It’s Duke Valterheim!” another yelled.
Unlike yesterday, the person from the Second Prince’s camp wasn’t the Half-Giant Luther Kyle. It was Jordan Valterheim, the Flame Sword.
He was an Aura User, known as the second most powerful person in the kingdom and one of the enemy leaders.
“Kill him!” someone yelled.
“If we kill that guy!” another shouted.
Before Logan could give an order, soldiers started shooting crossbows.
More soldiers joined in, shooting even before Duke Jordan was close enough.
It was like a fireball had jumped into a swarm of arrows.
Logan was about to get angry but stopped.
Just as he thought.
The arrows bounced off, and the fireball kept going towards the walls as if nothing had happened.
“Where do you think you’re going!” someone shouted.
Again, before Logan could say anything, he felt a strong magical power behind him.
The fireball fell to the ground.
It was Clayton’s Gravity Control magic. He felt confident after defeating Luther Kyle. Now, he was using it on Jordan, who was even stronger.
“Throw them!” Logan ordered.
The knights quickly picked up and threw large heated stones at Jordan.
About 30 of these stones hit the fireball.
A big explosion made a cloud of dust.
“We got him…!” someone shouted.
“Keep throwing! Don’t stop!” Logan yelled.
The knights kept throwing as the soldiers were about to cheer too soon.
“Annoying pests!!” a voice growled like a wild beast. Red aura burst through the dust cloud.
Jordan Valterheim was knocked back into the ground by more heated stones.
But Macline’s new weapon didn’t do much damage to him. The red aura in the dust cloud was getting bigger, not smaller.
“Squads 1, 2, and 3, focus on the Duke! Keep throwing!” Logan shouted.
“Self-Defense Forces Squads 1 through 5! Target that one! He even has the same hair color as me! Think of him as me and kill him!!” Kaisolon, the tough instructor, yelled. More arrows were fired.
“Insignificant fools…!” Jordan shouted.
‘He’s very tough. But that’s good,’ Logan thought.
Logan watched the red aura, which wasn’t getting weaker even with all the attacks. He was amazed that Jordan could withstand so much, even after being weakened by a strong spell.
But they had stopped him from climbing onto the walls. It would be easier if they could stop other strong fighters like that.
“Lord Logan! To the south!” someone called.
“I’m going!” Logan responded.
Wiken Kalia, a strong fighter from the First Prince’s army, couldn’t be hurt by arrows or stones.
It wasn’t about who was stronger, but about how their powers matched up. Wiken Kalia was dangerous to Logan not because Wiken was stronger, but because Wiken’s powers were a bad match for Logan’s defenses.
‘I have to stop that one myself,’ Logan thought.
He had proven yesterday that he could resist the power of aura, thanks to what he had learned since the last war.
‘I can do it. Maybe even more,’ Logan thought.
Logan felt himself getting better with each battle against these strong fighters. He felt determined and ran towards the fighter who was flying over the walls in a silver wind.
Unlike the first battle, the enemy forces didn’t retreat easily. They knew how strong Macline was from the last fight. The strong fighters were holding their ground at the front.
But the new weapons were causing many losses, which made the enemy soldiers lose hope.
The situation was a bit different on the eastern walls.
Because so many attacks were focused on Duke Jordan, there were some openings. Knights used these openings to climb onto the walls by sticking spears and swords into the hard surface.
But waiting for them was…
“Swamp!” someone shouted.
“Solid!” another yelled.
“Clay Binding!” a third voice called out.
The ground turned into a swamp. The soldiers’ shields glowed yellowish-brown, and mud covered their bodies. This was the power of the golem magic tower wizards, who were on the eastern walls because of the Second Prince’s army, which had many knights.
The power of the golem magic tower wizards, who were concentrated on the eastern ramparts because of the Second Prince’s army, which had an unusually large number of knights.
Swords clashed against shields. Dust and smoke filled the air around the castle walls. From above, a knight yelled, “Blast it!”
“Bloody hell!” another cried.
“A wizard!” someone shouted.
The swords of MacLane’s knights struck the enemy knights, who were now moving more slowly.
“Aargh!” an enemy knight screamed.
At the start, MacLane’s strategy was successful.
But they were outnumbered. The enemy had more than twice as many soldiers.
The enemy attack kept coming. They had many knights, their main fighters. More and more enemy knights climbed the walls.
“Lord MacLane…!” a knight called out.
Swoosh.
“Cough, cough!”
“Yes, it’s me,” MacLane replied.
Patrick fought hard, cutting down enemy knights. He was very worried about his son in the battle. Then, he saw some figures that made him uneasy.
‘Bloody hell,’ Patrick thought.
Below the walls, strong enemy knights pushed forward. They used special swords, called Force Blades, to stop our arrows and bombs. They were trying to find a way to get through.
‘Jorge of the Calia Marquisate, Harvey Milner of the Tritan County, Oliver Ortega of the Cherno family…’ Patrick recognized them.
He knew of these famous knights, even from just a quick look.
Patrick thought about the knights he couldn’t see. He guessed there were more than ten very strong knights in the enemy group.
‘If those blokes jump in properly…’ Patrick worried.
But then, he felt the battle begin to change.
Eileen had a special sense. When she felt something strange, she swung her sword at the air.
Each time she swung, a cold shockwave came from her sword. Her sword, Frigus, stopped most of the cold. Only a cool breeze was left. The soldiers were too busy fighting to notice it.
They were busy shooting crossbows and fighting off the enemies rushing at them.
“What’s with that woman…?!” a soldier exclaimed.
Scritch.
“Heh, heh-heh,” Eileen chuckled.
She easily killed the thirteenth enemy knight today.
She didn’t feel happy that she could use her gender as a weapon as a knight.
She just focused on sensing the long-range magic from the mage, swung her sword, and kept cutting down the knights climbing up.
She was supposed to defend the north wall, but she was now rampaging on the south wall. She had forgotten all about her original duty.
‘Lord Logan is fighting so hard too,’ she thought.
Logan was pale, but he fought very strong enemies. These enemies were like superhumans, incredibly powerful.
Eileen looked away from that battle, which she knew she couldn’t help with. She focused on her own role.
But then, she noticed something strange.
‘Retreating little by little?’ she wondered.
The knights of the ‘1st Prince’s Army’ were falling back one by one.
The elite knights, whom she and Patrick were watching, were also returning to their base instead of climbing the walls.
Many of them seemed to be frowning and cursing. It seemed they had been given an order from above that they couldn’t refuse.
‘Why?’ Eileen wondered.
Soon, only a few knights defended against the attacks, and some soldiers shot arrows that didn’t even reach the walls.
From a distance, it looked like they were still fighting hard, but they were clumsy.
The soldiers on the south and west walls, who were blocking the 1st Prince’s Army, saw the knights disappearing one by one. The battle was becoming easier.
‘What is it?’ someone asked.
This confusing retreat continued for hours.
Then, Duke Jordan, who had been fighting hard on the east wall and using up many supplies, shouted loudly.
“All troops retreat!! Retreat!”
The order came from the head of the 2nd Prince’s Army.
The 2nd Prince’s Army began to retreat like a wave. The 1st Prince’s Army, which had been pretending to fight, also began to retreat quickly.
“Huh…?!” a soldier exclaimed.
“They’re retreating!” another shouted.
“Wooaaah!”
“We won again!” the soldiers cheered, their voices like thunder on the walls.
But even MacLane’s high command was confused. They didn’t know why the enemy was retreating.
“…The reason is obvious,” Logan said, looking at one place with cold eyes.
“Yes?” MacLane asked.
“Compare the number of corpses below the walls,” Logan said.
“Ah…!” MacLane realized.
“Their problem is they don’t trust each other. That’s their weakness, and it’s why we can win,” Logan explained.
Eileen nodded. Logan smiled coldly as he watched the retreating factions.
In the central camp of the retreating 2nd Prince’s formation, an angry shout erupted.
Bang!
“What in the world are you doing, Juan?! Are you trying to break our deal by coming all the way here?!” Duke Jordan yelled.
[Whoa, whoa. Calm down. Our soldiers have suffered too much damage, so we had no choice,]
“Because you guys have suffered a lot, you’re going to force damage only to us? With the enemy in front of us? Even a three-year-old knows that’s a stupid thing to do! I can’t believe a mage is that much of an idiot!”
[Watch your mouth, Jordan. Doesn’t that mean our army fought ‘more’ diligently?]
Jordan grew even angrier at Juan Douglas’s brazen expression on the communication device.
“Nonsense! Don’t treat me like a fool, Juan. The damage was only increased because Wicken was blocked by that brat. If you were so upset about that, you should have jumped to the front line instead of Wicken. Like me! Ah, were you too much of a coward to go to the front line yourself?”
[…Putting on a show after moving your heavy arse with difficulty because Luther was disgracefully injured and retreated. I’m worried about whether Luther can protect the prince well in your place right now,]
“Threatening me in this situation. Are you out of your mind, Juan? Are you trying to start a fight with us now, here?”
[Let’s be honest. Instead of blaming each other, how about we face the real problem?]
“Bullshit…!” Jordan cursed.
[Why were we staying by the prince’s side? Isn’t it because we don’t trust each other? If we trust each other for a moment and you and I, Luther and Wicken, all go to the battlefield, how long do you think those bat bastards holed up in that fortress can last?]
“Hahaha! The bloke who stabbed me in the back just a few hours ago is asking to trust each other again? I didn’t know you were like a clown, Juan. That was quite funny.”
[I apologize for withdrawing the troops first,]
“……What?” Jordan was surprised to hear Juan apologize.
[So, I’m saying let’s discuss how to prevent this from happening again. If you were in the same situation as me, what would you have done? Would you have accepted damage only to us for the sake of a common enemy? Don’t be ridiculous, Jordan. You would have made the same choice as me, right?]
“…….”
[Yes, you can’t deny it. And while we’re doing that, the biggest benefit goes to those bat bastards in the castle. Doesn’t it bother you just imagining it? So, let’s make a real promise,]
“……Tell me in detail,”
The conversation between the two superhumans continued for a long time.
