A loud roar came from the enemy soldiers. They started to move forward, like a dark wave across the land. Sword Master watched them from the high fortress wall and sighed. He looked worried.
The enemy army was huge. It was even bigger than before. Two more groups of soldiers had joined them. They had fought four groups before and won against one. Now, there were twice as many enemies! And something else was different. The knights and soldiers were not wearing the golden dragon symbol on their armor anymore.
*Why did they wait so long?* Sword Master thought.
“The Emperor was right to worry,” said Truth, the mage. “But at least we are lucky in one way.”
Truth, a mage, stood next to him. He was one of Clayton’s students and helped control the magic shield around the fortress. “Are the changes finished, like the Emperor asked?” Truth asked.
“Yes,” answered the other mage. “It will use more magic stones, but the shield will last for about two more days.”
Sword Master sighed. “Two days…” They needed to win faster. He felt frustrated. But there was more to worry about.
“But look at the back,” Truth said, pointing. Sword Master followed his gaze. Behind the enemy soldiers, there were many mages – maybe a thousand! They were all the mages the Empire had left. Even if they weren’t the best mages, so many of them were dangerous for the shield. Sword Master knew what they would do. Like at Kyle Fortress, the enemy mages would try to weaken their defenses, making the crossbows and Liberatio less useful.
Sword Master saw the mages. He knew they were a problem, but he had no way to attack them from here. He gritted his teeth in anger. “This will hurt us badly,” Sword Master said. “You should go inside, Truth. It’s too dangerous here.”
“No,” Truth replied. “I must help, even a little.”
Sword Master looked around. All twenty mages who controlled the shield were on the wall, ready to fight. They were not strong fighters, especially Truth who was a 4th Circle mage, but they were brave. Sword Master felt touched by their courage and said nothing.
Some soldiers were even more eager to fight. Luther stomped his foot on the ground. “Don’t worry, Your Excellency!” he boomed. “We will smash those sneaky enemies!”
“Luther,” Sword Master said, “don’t be too sure of yourself.”
“It’s seven of us against their four,” Luther argued. “Now it’s five against four. What can they do? And you are here, Your Excellency!”
Sword Master nodded slightly. Luther meant they were stronger than normal people. Even though the enemy had more soldiers, their own fighters were much more powerful.
Sword Master knew no enemy soldier could beat someone who used Aura, like him and Luther. He had defeated two of their strongest fighters in the last battle. This time would be even easier. “If you lead the attack, and I follow,” Luther said, “we can beat anyone, even if they send a hundred weaklings!” Luther was a huge man, full of energy. He stepped forward, ready to fight. He made his bold words sound almost true.
“What about Burdel and Duke Gunther?” Sword Master asked. “I think they are ready to fight…” Suddenly, he heard voices behind him. “We are here, Your Excellency,” said one. “Ready, Sword Master,” said another. Burdel, an archer with brown hair and blue eyes, wearing leather armor, stepped forward. Next to him was Duke Gunther, an older knight in armor with star designs. They bowed to Sword Master.
“Duke Gunther,” Sword Master said, “you have the charm I gave you, right?”
“Of course,” Gunther replied, smiling slightly. “How could I forget a gift from you, Sword Master?” Gunther Liberty was a very strong fighter, the strongest in the Liberty Kingdom. He felt honored that Sword Master had given him a charm a few days ago – a ‘Flame Pattern’ charm. It wasn’t very powerful, but it was a gift from Sword Master. *Sword Master is so strong,* Gunther thought. *The King is said to be even stronger, but I can’t even imagine it.* Gunther had seen Sword Master fight in the last battle. He knew how skilled he was. And now, this powerful man was being kind to him, even though Gunther was not even from the McLean family. Gunther felt deeply grateful. Sword Master didn’t notice Gunther’s thoughts. He just sighed softly, trying to push away his worries.
“Okay,” Sword Master said loudly. “We are ready. Soldiers, get ready to fight!”
“Prepare for battle!” the Royal Army shouted back. They were already nervous watching the enemy come closer, but now they felt stronger, ready to fight. Sword Master looked at them and roared, his voice shaking the fortress walls. “We pushed back the Empire’s soldiers once before!” he yelled. “We will do it again today! I know we can! Do you believe it?!”
“YES!” the soldiers roared.
“Shoot arrows into their heads! Stab spears into their hearts! Show them they cannot pass this fortress!”
“YES!”
“Soldiers, start the battle!” Sword Master commanded.
“For the Kingdom!” the soldiers cried.
As soon as Sword Master gave the order, arrows flew from the fortress wall like rain, hitting the enemy soldiers. There were even more arrows than before – almost half as many again! They had gotten many more supplies from Taren. Even the soldiers from Liberty had fast crossbows and lots of arrows. The same for the Liberatio. Knights on the wall threw red stones with great force, much stronger than normal people.
*Screeeech! Whoosh, whoosh! WHAM! WHAM! WHAM!* The arrows and stones hit the enemy soldiers, and many cried out in pain. The attack was working! But then, a blue light appeared behind the enemy lines. It grew bigger and bigger, forming a huge wall of wind above the enemy soldiers. *WHAM! WHAM! WHAM!* Most of the arrows bounced off the wind, and many of the Liberatio stones exploded harmlessly against it. The wind shield was strong!
“Now!” shouted the enemy commanders. “Forward! Don’t stop! Advance!” The wind shield was working, so the enemy soldiers charged faster. Only the arrows with red Aura could get through the wind and hurt them. These arrows were aimed at the enemy leaders. As the 4th Legion Commander, Drexler Littman, reached the fortress wall and jumped up into the air, all the red arrows turned towards him.
“Archer, let’s finish this!” Drexler yelled.
“Says you!” Burdel shouted back. *BANG! BANG!* The two strong fighters clashed in the air. Now, enemy knights started climbing onto the fortress wall and jumping over.
The enemy knights had been told one thing: *The magic that weakens us is gone now. Don’t be afraid! Charge!* This was an order from the Emperor himself. That’s why they had even removed the golden dragon symbol from their armor – to trick the enemy. *We will make them pay for this shame!* the knights thought, full of anger and determination. But then… *THUD.* “Ugh!” an enemy knight cried. “W-what is this?” “Still?!” another shouted. “It’s still here! The enemy magic… Ack!” The knights had believed the magic was gone. But as soon as they jumped onto the fortress wall, they felt it – the magic was still there, weakening them. It was a shock, like a punch in the stomach.
“Die!” a soldier yelled. *Stab.* “Go away, invaders!” a knight shouted. *Thwack.* The soldiers and knights on the wall fought fiercely, killing the enemy knights as they climbed up. Drexler Littman, the 4th Legion Commander, was surprised and got hit in the leg by a red arrow. “H-how is this possible…?” he gasped.
“Die,” Burdel said coldly. He came closer and shot more red arrows at Drexler, smiling.
“You fool!” Drexler cursed. *WHAM! WHAM! WHAM!*
“Good job, Burdel!” Luther shouted from the front of the wall. He grinned as he smashed three enemy knights with his warhammer at once. Then, he saw a fast figure coming towards him – Blake Evandor, the enemy commander from before! Luther charged at him without thinking.
“Long time no see, you sly dog. Did you sell out your country in the meantime!? You even erased your insignia!”
“You fool!” Blake Evandor, the 3rd Legion Commander of the Imperial Eastern Army, gritted his teeth, trying to suppress his bursting anger. Contrary to what he had been told, the power of the magic that familiarly wrapped around his entire body and weakened his Force was still there. How could the operation carried out under the orders of His Majesty the Emperor go so wrong?
*What on earth were the staff or the intelligence department doing? Making His Majesty make such a mistake!*
Rage was boiling, but there was no time to continue thinking.
“I’ll end you this time!” Because a huge hammer, and the aura flickering like a flame inside it, was already approaching before his eyes.
Kwaaaang!
“Kugh!” A mistake. To receive that ignorant hammer head-on. Blake realized his mistake at the momentary sliding of his body and the pain that felt like his internal organs were twisting. He had faced the enemy’s strength with his greatest weakness.
“Hahaha! Die!” The opponent’s weapon, which had gained the upper hand, was approaching right in front of him again. Fortunately, he had reinforcements.
Kwaaaang!
“Lord Blake, like before!” 2nd Legion Commander Jipen Trai shouted, twisting the angle of the warhammer with a great spear. The meaning of those words was clear. Within this magic circle that tenaciously bound his entire body, they could only handle that giant if they combined their strength. It was a deviation from the plan, but it was within manageable limits. Unlike last time, the wind barrier was protecting the Imperial Army.
Yes. Probably.
*Wouldn’t it be, Lord Miles?* However, he couldn’t help but turn his gaze to Miles Malfin, who had become the commander of the Northern Expeditionary Force in place of the deceased Jamie Gillan.
“I will avenge Jamie and Melvin!” Sword Master couldn’t help but be more puzzled by Miles, who was rushing towards him with bloodshot eyes.
*Alone?* The guy who survived alone after three of them attacked is fearlessly charging alone? He was taken aback, but he soon realized that wasn’t the case.
“Long live the Emperor!” The momentum of the five knights who were running alongside him, spouting fanatical words, suddenly amplified tremendously. From the level of ordinary knights to a level that transcended their limits in an instant.
*Superhuman?* Their faces were hidden by black helmets, but the dark red power surging from their swords was clearly… Aura.
“Ha!?” Were Aura users this common? And what was dark red Aura? Even amidst the momentary chaos of common sense, Sword Master instinctively dodged most of the pouring attacks.
*Are these guys quintuplets or something?* Just as he was thinking that the sword strikes pouring down from similar angles and speeds were too similar, a particularly red, shining, giant scythe blocked his path.
Kwaaaang!
Grrrind.
“Hahaha! Sword Master, today is your death anniversary!” Miles, who was opening his mouth while struggling with a red-hot face, was forcing himself to speak. With a different appearance than before and eyes that gleamed strangely, he didn’t look normal at all. Just as his brow was furrowing in doubt, dark red Aura poured in again from all directions.
*No idle thoughts.* Woooooosh. With six Aura users, he couldn’t afford to be anything less than fully focused. The moment he thought that, Sword Master’s body became a red lightning bolt, splitting through the gaps in the pouring offensive.
Lightning Chaser. The pinnacle of the speed martial arts he pursued. His body accelerated to the maximum in an instant as the best technique was unleashed. Just as his sword was about to tear apart one of the black knights.
“Not a chance!” The giant scythe blocked his path again. As if he was going to die in place of the black knight, leaving a wide opening. At that, Sword Master thrust his sword without missing the momentarily revealed gap.
Stab.
“Let’s die together, Sword Master.” Miles, whose abdomen was pierced, smiled crookedly as he grabbed his sword. At the same time, the bodies of the black knights, who had already approached nearby, suddenly swelled up.
“Emperor.”
“His Majesty.”
“Long live!” Kwaaaaaaaaaaaaaang! A more intense explosion than ever before destroyed a corner of the fortress wall.
