The Rap Star – Episode 1 (Prologue) (1/309)
Golden Age Hip Hop.
The heyday of hip hop.
Commonly known as the ‘Golden Era.’
The Golden Era of hip hop typically refers to the period from the late 1980s to the mid-to-late 1990s, concluding around the time of the deaths of Tupac (2Pac) and Notorious B.I.G.
This era marked a turning point when hip hop music, once considered a marginalized subculture primarily associated with Black communities, began to achieve mainstream recognition. It was celebrated for its diversity, artistic quality, innovative evolution, and profound influence on popular music.
The American Popular Music Research Institute’s analysis, which examined big data from 17,000 songs that charted on the US Billboard Top 100 from 1960 to 2010, offers a compelling perspective.
Their research suggested that the most significant revolutionary shift in American popular music history wasn’t the rise of rock music in the 1960s, but rather the emergence of hip hop and rap in the 1990s.
Now, thirty years later, hip hop is experiencing a resurgence, a second golden age.
This second Golden Era began in the late 2000s.
Some have dubbed this period the Golden New Era.
During this Golden New Era, numerous rappers emerged, though many quickly faded into obscurity. Those who persevered and achieved widespread acclaim were hailed by the public as Rap Stars.
Moreover, within the ranks of Rap Stars, a select few distinguished themselves as ‘Rap Superstars.’
