Taming (1)
After seeing the Director of the Legal Research and Training Institute, I headed to Gwangju, not Seoul.
Going back right away might raise suspicion.
Visiting my parents’ home after a long time, they welcomed me warmly.
However, they seemed a bit disappointed that I came alone.
It seemed they wanted to see their grandson’s face after a long time, more than their daughter-in-law.
I promised to bring him next time and rested at home for two days and one night.
I didn’t do anything special.
Just sleeping in, eating the warm home-cooked meals my mother made, and taking a walk along the familiar hometown streets while enjoying the night air.
That alone was enough to heal me.
Buying a can of beer at a convenience store and sitting on a park bench was much happier than drinking expensive liquor worth tens of millions of won with high-ranking people or glamorous women in a penthouse.
Perhaps because it was such a peaceful city, I couldn’t think about work here.
Or so I thought.
It seemed like thinking that was the problem.
After emptying two cans of beer and taking out the third, my plans in Seoul naturally began to surface in my mind.
The relationship with the Daehan Party. And the steps to be taken in the upcoming regular session of the National Assembly, and…
As I thought, I unconsciously chuckled.
I guess I was born a workaholic.
Complete rest was out of the question.
“The Daehan Party…”
I slowly sipped my beer and pondered.
Perhaps because of the situation, I had been getting closer to the people of the Daehan Party lately.
It was inevitable to keep Sung Tae-hyun in check, but the connection with the Daehan Party was being formed faster than I thought.
It was as if the time I belonged to the Daehan Party before breaking up with Choi Gyu-hyun was flashing through my mind.
…Huh?
At that moment, a brilliant idea flashed through my head.
Wait a minute.
There’s no rule that says I can’t go back to the Daehan Party, is there?
If things continue like this, it’s not entirely impossible to formally join hands with the Daehan Party.
No, it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that the possibility of making a ‘glamorous comeback’ has arisen.
Although it’s limited to the next general election, it’s certain that I will hold the casting vote in the National Assembly for at least two years.
And in the upcoming regular session in July and the two regular sessions until July next year, this casting vote could have power beyond imagination.
Above all, the biggest obstacle to returning to the Daehan Party was none other than Choi Gyu-hyun.
More precisely, returning to Line Number 1 [political faction or alliance].
When I first entered the line, the structure was not the same as it is now.
Both Line 1 and Line 2 had members from both the Daehan Party and the Minguk Party, but Choi Gyu-hyun gathered all the Daehan Party members to satisfy his own selfish desires.
The Minguk Party members belonging to Line 1, who were pushed back by him, had no choice but to move to Line 2.
In other words, now that Choi Gyu-hyun is gone, there is no need to maintain the current structure.
Although I have the support of the Minguk Party members and the Minguk Party members, it doesn’t mean that they won’t receive nominations or that the people won’t support them if they go to Line 1.
Rather, their power will be stronger.
The image of me rising to a high position with the support of both the Minguk Party and the Daehan Party is vividly drawn in my head.
Naturally, the corners of my lips twisted roughly.
Of course, I have no intention of openly moving to Line 1 right now.
I also need the support of the Minguk Party, and I don’t need to be treated like a fish caught by the Daehan Party.
Slowly.
I have to move very slowly.
I have to gradually build a friendly relationship with the Daehan Party and show that I am making a decision to move, not because ‘I wanted to,’ but because ‘they sent me a love call [an invitation or strong encouragement].’
This also has to be done very secretly.
Just because I’m joining hands with the Daehan Party doesn’t mean I’m going to kick the Minguk Party away.
In party struggles, the opposition and ruling parties are like lions and tigers.
I shouldn’t get caught up in their fights, but become a tamer who controls both of them.
My goal right now isn’t just to become the Prosecutor General.
Beyond that.
To reach the pinnacle of the Republic of Korea.
To sit on the throne securely, not through a dangerous gamble, I must have both parties in my hands.
To make that happen, I have to make them wag their tails on their own, without even knowing they are being tamed.
That’s the true king.
The pinnacle and absolute power.
Towards a position that no one can covet.
I will move forward.
Very slowly.
And magnificently.
I emptied the can of beer I was holding in one gulp, crushed it, and got up from my seat.
It seems like this trip will be more fruitful than I thought.

Time flew by quickly, and before I knew it, the date was July 1st.
A few days ago, I heard from the Director of the Legal Research and Training Institute that suspicions were gradually growing within the Blue House [the executive office and official residence of the President of South Korea].
It’s understandable.
It’s already been two months, but the Director of the Legal Research and Training Institute showed no signs of submitting his resignation.
It won’t be long before they realize that the Director of the Legal Research and Training Institute is related to me.
It’s enough that I’ve dragged it out this long.
But even if they realize it, it’s already too late.
I’ve already contacted the people who could issue my appointment, including the Director of the Legal Research and Training Institute.
No matter how much of a president he is, he can’t forcibly remove other people.
There were many other things that happened during the first half of this year.
If I had to pick one of the most important things, it would be Shin Dong-hyun’s election as the Mayor of Seoul.
He has risen from an important person in my line to Number Two, comparable to me.
I am also managing my relationship with him well so that I don’t repeat the misfortune of being backstabbed by Sung Tae-hyun again.
Also, since I am proceeding in a direction of symbiosis rather than using Shin Dong-hyun, my relationship with him will probably continue until I reach the top.
“Hmm.”
I smelled the warm coffee in my hand and took a sip.
Unlike yesterday, when I was looking for iced coffee as soon as I got to work, as if to say that the second half of 2027 would be a new phase, there was a drastic change in the weather on the first day of July.
The temperature dropped to the point where I had to wonder if I should bring a coat, though it wasn’t cold enough to be chilly.
Outside the window, raindrops were falling with a pattering sound.
It was the beginning of the rainy season.
The rainy season, which started right from today, was pouring rain as if a hole had been punched in the sky since dawn.
Looking out the window, my mind calmed down.
No, I think it’s been like that since this morning.
I wonder if this gloomy feeling is because of the weather.
Just as I was about to empty my coffee, Yoon Seol-ha came in with a knock.
“Good morning, Prosecutor General.”
She was smiling as always.
But she tilted her head and asked.
“You don’t seem to be yourself, Prosecutor General… Is something wrong?”
“I think it’s because the weather is humid.”
I put down my coffee and instead picked up the remote control and turned the air conditioner’s dehumidifying function to the maximum.
“Shall I give you the work report later?”
“No. Please do it now.”
I sat on the windowsill instead of the chair and looked at Yoon Seol-ha.
She read the report and continued.
“From 10 o’clock, interviews with the prosecutors who have newly joined due to the personnel changes in the second half of the year are scheduled.”
“Ah, did Hyun-sung come to work?”
“Yes.”
Yoon Seol-ha nodded.
“After checking, he said he came to work early.”
Song Hyun-sung.
Shin Yong-ho and my college classmate and an important colleague.
He used to work in the Inspection Department, but until yesterday, he was the Deputy Chief Prosecutor of the Western District Prosecutors’ Office, but from today, he has been appointed as the Deputy Chief Prosecutor of the Seoul High Prosecutors’ Office.
Of course, I brought him in.
I feel like I’ve finally repaid an old favor.
I’ve helped him a few times in the past, but this was the first time Song Hyun-sung was having such a hard time with a promotion.
“Tell Hyun-sung to come in little by little, starting with him.”
“Understood.”
Yoon Seol-ha made a short check and continued.
“There are quite a few newly appointed prosecutors, so you will have to have a meal in the middle of the interviews. Immediately after the interviews, there will be a general meeting on the plans for the second half of the year. I have scheduled it from 3 p.m., but I have told them that it may be delayed a bit.”
“Good job.”
“Besides that…”
She explained about minor tasks, but they are not important, so I just need to remember them in my head.
“Ah, and.”
Yoon Seol-ha said, closing the report.
“The city for the new city construction project will be announced by the Gyeonggi Provincial Office today.”
“The date has already come.”
“Yes. I will check every hour and report as soon as the announcement comes out.”
“Understood.”
Yoon Seol-ha was about to turn around but stopped again and said.
“Ah, and this is something you probably already know, but the regular session of the National Assembly starts today.”
“Yes. I have checked it.”
“I will tell you as soon as related reports come out.”
“Yes. I’ll let you know when the bills come out.”
“Thank you.”
She bowed her head and left the office.
Regular session of the National Assembly.
Various bills will be introduced, and all sorts of votes will be held.
However, among the bills that come out like a flood, the most important issue is the budget for next year.
Whether to increase the budget for a specific ministry or not. If so, where to raise the tax revenue. If not, a fierce debate will begin over which ministry to take it from to raise the budget for that ministry.
This will determine whether we live like beggars or live abundantly for the next year.
It’s not a fight over whether to pass it or not.
It’s about who becomes the winner and who becomes the loser.
Thinking about that, my lips naturally twisted.
Because it’s up to me to make someone a winner.
Above all, the budget bill cannot be dragged out for long due to the National Assembly Advancement Act, so I can unconditionally control it as I please.
The others will take care of the minor things among themselves, but I don’t have to worry because they will contact me if an important agenda comes up.
But why do I feel uneasy in one corner of my heart for some reason?
The ominous feeling that has been going on since I came to work has strangely not disappeared.
Everything is clearly perfect.
Or maybe it’s just the weather.
Because of the rain that’s been pouring down for the first time in a while. And because of the rainy season that won’t stop for the next few days.
I don’t know.
The regular session of the National Assembly is enough, I’ve already checked the list of new faces who have been newly appointed to the High Prosecutors’ Office, so there shouldn’t be any problems.
The only important thing today is the announcement of the new city construction project by the Gyeonggi Provincial Office…
Could it be that Gyeonggi Governor Min Hyung-taek is backstabbing me…
No, that can’t be.
No matter how cunning he is, he can’t move recklessly because his son’s problem is at stake.
Nevertheless, feeling uneasy for some reason, I sat in front of the computer and went to the Gyeonggi Provincial Office’s website.
I kept refreshing the page until the announcement of the new city construction was posted.
After about 10 minutes. 20 minutes. And about an hour.
Knock knock.
Yoon Seol-ha’s voice was heard with a knock.
“Deputy Chief Prosecutor Song Hyun-sung has come to interview.”
But then, a new post was uploaded to the notice board.
I didn’t answer and brought that window to the screen as quickly as possible.
<2027 Second Half New City Construction Target Area>
– Jungsan-dong, Goyang-si
– Seoksu-dong, Anyang-si
– Onam-eup, Namyangju-si
“Hoo…”
I unknowingly let out a sigh of relief.
Okay.
I was worried for nothing.
Wiping the sweat that had formed on my forehead, I got up from my seat.
“Tell him to come in.”
The door opened and Song Hyun-sung, a familiar and welcome face, came in.
“Oh, Prosecutor General. Long time no see!”
He greeted me with a sly smile.
I laughed loudly and shook hands with him.
“It’s nice to see you here, isn’t it?”
“Right?”
“Sit down. Let’s talk comfortably.”
“Okay.”
I sat down on the sofa with Song Hyun-sung.
The weather was still gloomy.
Meanwhile, outside the window, the rain became heavier and heavier, and the heavy rain was scratching the window.
