157.
“Enemy!”
At dawn, before the sun had even peeked over the horizon, soldiers’ voices tore through the darkness-shrouded camp. I immediately left the command tent.
‘Sylphen.’
The manifested Sylphen flew menacingly towards the commotion.
I, too, spread the flow of wind and earth towards the area where the enemies had launched their surprise attack.
“Enemy!”
Soldiers’ voices rang out from the rear of the camp as well. The sounds of clashing weapons and screams shattered the quiet dawn.
“Commander!”
Olivia called out to me urgently.
“This is…”
I frowned at the powerful mana emanating from the front of the camp.
“Looks like one of the Sword Masters has arrived.”
The thought occurred to me that this might be an opportunity.
Being caught in a sudden surprise attack was bad news, but the fact that one of the three Sword Masters was directly participating in the attack was more of a boon than a bane.
“Gale!”
I urgently called for Gale.
“Yes.”
Gale approached me.
“Take on the Sword Master at the front. Riorden, handle the enemies that have infiltrated the rear, and Olivia, you and I will take on the enemies on the right flank. And Ken.”
“Yes, Commander.”
“Keep an eye on the situation from the center with David and deploy the knights appropriately.”
It was originally my role, but I wanted to participate directly in the battle.
The scale of the surprise attack was larger than expected, so it was better for me to step in directly to prevent the damage from escalating.
As a Spirit Master, I excel at wide-area attacks.
I immediately set off with Olivia.
A fierce battle was raging on the right flank.
It was clear at a glance that the scale of the enemy forces was considerable. It was more than just a surprise attack; it was practically a full-frontal assault.
Following Sylphen, Ignis covered the sky, greatly boosting the morale of our soldiers.
“The Commander is here!”
At someone’s loud shout, I summoned Climb and Elraim as well.
It was time to let the enemies know.
What level of Spirit Master they were dealing with.
How many Spirit Masters on the continent could summon four high-grade spirits to the battlefield simultaneously?
I believed that only I was capable of it.
Elraim waved his hand, scattering shimmering water droplets. Hundreds of droplets spread in all directions, binding the enemies.
Elraim waved his hand once more, and the water droplets exploded. The soldiers trapped in the droplets suffered fatal wounds, collapsing or dying instantly.
The mana in the Mana Hole was still plentiful, and I unleashed Sylphen and Ignis’s fiery winds as well.
KWAH-! BANG-! BANG-!
The presence of just one person was enough to feel the enemy’s surprise attack faltering in an instant.
The soldiers who had attacked the right flank numbered well over a thousand, but their numbers were already visibly dwindling.
‘To mobilize this many troops for a surprise attack… What on earth is the commander of the Kaila Hall defense force thinking?’
Since we had two Sword Masters on our side, the Kaila Hall defense force’s Sword Masters should have been traveling together, at least two of them.
If one of them was separated and wandered alone like this, they could be killed by our Sword Masters’ joint attack.
‘News of Father’s departure must have reached their ears. I thought they would be confused, but they had the mental fortitude to carry out a surprise attack?’
As I was pondering these questions, I heard the enemy commander’s voice.
“Retreat! Retreat to the castle!”
Kaila Hall was an impregnable fortress. It had been breached thanks to my father’s overwhelming power, but I was not my father.
I wanted to reduce their numbers as much as possible before the enemies entered the sturdy castle walls.
“Don’t let a single one escape!”
With that shout, I sent Climb to the rear of the enemies to unleash the Roar of the Earth.
GOOOOOOO-!
The ground shook once.
Followed by a tremendous explosion.
KWAH-! BANG-!
The soldiers who were trying to retreat began to panic. They had no choice but to be bewildered as the ground suddenly disappeared.
I summoned all the high-grade, mid-grade, and low-grade spirits to mercilessly cut down the enemies.
“Olivia, take care of the knights.”
“I will not leave your side, Commander.”
Olivia raised an aura blade [a blade made of concentrated magical energy] from her sword.
“Of course.”
With my reply, Olivia’s aura blade flew towards the enemies.
SWISH-!
At the same time as the knight’s head, who had been urging the retreat, floated into the air, I shouted loudly.
“I will spare those who surrender!”
As the Kaila Hall defense soldiers lowered their swords one by one, the commander shouted urgently.
“What are you doing! Those who surrender without retreating, I will…”
His words were cut short.
Sylph unleashed a chain of wind on him, who was distracted by anger, and his heart was pierced, causing him to fall from his horse in vain.
“Surrender!”
The surviving Kaila Hall defense soldiers all surrendered willingly.
Our army’s casualties were not nonexistent, but we had definitely defended well against the surprise attack at dawn.
I wasn’t too worried about the rear and the front either. Riorden and Gale would be able to hold them off sufficiently.
The existence of the magic corps was also reassuring.
KWAH-!
As I finished the battle and barely had time to catch my breath, an explosion rang out from the front.
I summoned the spirits around me and turned my gaze.
“Olivia.”
“It seems Gale has started fighting.”
That kind of sound wouldn’t be made when colliding with ordinary soldiers or knights.
“Let’s go to Gale. Now is not the time for a one-on-one duel. We need to quickly end it with a joint attack. This kind of opportunity will not come again.”
Olivia understood my words very well.
Her thoughts were not much different from mine.
“Yes, Commander.”
“Be prepared in case there are more enemy surprise attacks.”
I instructed the knights and turned my steps towards the front.
‘I will definitely catch them before they retreat to the castle.’
If we could capture or kill a Sword Master, this war might be resolved easily.
* * *
Olivia and I rushed to the front.
BANG-!
As we were leaving the right flank, an attack came in, and I instinctively summoned Elraim to create a water barrier.
“Not bad, are you?”
With the voice, the attacker revealed himself.
It was a woman wearing a red robe and holding a large tree branch as a staff.
There was also a man with a calm expression next to her, and even without a word, the presence he exuded just by holding his sword was suffocating.
‘That man is definitely Gordon.’
I had carefully looked at the portraits of all three Sword Masters, so I recognized his identity.
One Sword Master facing Gale, and Sword Master Gordon in front of me.
After a moment of silence, the woman opened her mouth.
“Did you come to play house? An imperial prince bringing a beauty to the battlefield…”
Sylph flew towards the woman.
BANG-!
Sylph collided hard with the woman’s shield.
“Hmph, so you want to fight right away?”
Suddenly, an unknown language flowed from the woman’s mouth, and a giant wall began to fall around us from the sky.
BANG-! BANG-! BANG-! BANG-!
With a crackling sound, the walls connected, completely separating the space outside from the space inside.
“Well, I’ve created a good space to focus on fighting. I’ve prepared a lot for Your Highness.”
It was as if a completely new world had unfolded, and no sound from the outside could be heard at all.
I looked around the separated space and said.
“Are you Lillian?”
“I’m honored. Your Highness even knows my name.”
I bit my lip.
‘Did Hamilton fail? No. It’s possible he didn’t even infiltrate Kaila Hall.’
Lillian must have appeared before me before Hamilton attempted the assassination.
Gordon calmly opened his mouth.
“Finish off the daughter of the White family here and return with only the prince. No father can ignore the safety of his son.”
I chuckled at Gordon’s words.
‘So they’re trying to take me hostage.’
I roughly understood the situation regarding why the Kaila Hall defense force had launched a surprise attack.
Lillian said.
“Your Highness’s value as a hostage is very high. It was already difficult to stop the empire from expanding, but if we capture Your Highness, the empire will quiet down, right? Thanks to you, I’ll be able to quietly focus on magic research for a while.”
I summoned Ignis.
I interrupted Lillian, who seemed to have already captured me.
“Aren’t you being too arrogant?”
Honestly, I thought Lillian had reason to be arrogant.
First of all, in the battle between Olivia and Gordon, Gordon was superior in skill. He had more experience than Olivia and became a Sword Master earlier.
I was likely no match for Lillian either. The only strategy was to buy time until Gale arrived.
Lillian, an 8th circle mage [a mage of extremely high power] who could change the course of the war just by her existence. That’s why I planned the assassination.
Now, my only hope was Gale.
If he won and came here to where Olivia and I were, we could definitely defeat Gordon and Lillian.
I bit my lip and summoned Climb at Lillian’s feet.
BANG-!
Roar of the Earth.
However, Lillian was already floating in the sky.
“Your Highness is not considerate, are you?”
Lillian smiled.
“Olivia, don’t overdo it. Just focus on Gordon.”
If Olivia got distracted by me, she might be defeated by Gordon.
“Killing Gordon is the way to survive here.”
“Yes.”
Olivia replied briefly.
I had to focus only on Lillian as well. Distracting my attention against an 8th circle mage meant asking to be killed.
I spread the flow of wind and earth and summoned Sylphen.
Sylphen leaped into the sky.
“I saw you using all four high-grade spirits. Your Highness has truly amazing talent. Did you inherit Leod’s talent for spiritism?”
Sylphen spun around and unleashed a chain of wind.
“If I had inherited my father’s talent, I would be facing not only you but that guy at the same time.”
At my words, Lillian’s expression momentarily hardened.
Isn’t the inferiority complex towards Father… something that not only the powerful figures of the empire but also all the leading figures of the continent have?
A smile spread across my face without me realizing it.
‘If emotions escalate in battle, it’s easy to show an opening.’
I ordered Sylphen and Ignis to create a red windstorm.
KWAH-! BANG-!
Lillian easily blocked the attacks of the two high-grade spirits with a transparent shield.
‘My father’s magic circle wasn’t described in detail, but it used the expression that it wasn’t far behind Austin’s. That means it’s on par with Lillian.’
As the things I wrote became reality, I felt the greatness of my father.
Is it really possible for one human to have such power?
My father’s power had already been proven through war countless times, but it was at an unbelievable level.
“I may be a little lacking in talent, but the fact that I’m Leod remains unchanged. Leod has never been defeated.”
Climb reached out with his massive body to grab Lillian’s legs.
Lillian teleported again and swung her staff.
Hundreds of fireballs poured down on me.
I created Elraim’s water wall, and I aimed at Lillian with Sylphen.
“Haven’t you all run away so much in the name of Leod? It was a mistake to come to catch me today. Because you won’t be able to escape either.”
There was nothing wrong with confidence.
Lillian smiled deeply.
“Yes. I don’t intend to run away. There should be no more victories for Leod.”
A tremendous flow of mana surged from Lillian’s staff.
