“How many days has it been already, after telling us not to touch anything?”
Gail sternly replied to one of the knight’s remarks.
“Patience. His Highness is also waiting without complaint.”
The knight fell silent.
* * *
Three days had passed since then.
Ren treated me and my party with a kind tone, but his actions weren’t as accommodating. He’d forbidden us from touching a single tree, leaf, or even a rock.
“Our stay is getting longer and longer.”
I shrugged at Gail’s words.
“There’s nothing we can do. It wouldn’t be wise to start a war with the fairies.”
Olivia subtly interjected.
“Still, wouldn’t it be a good idea to send a message at least once?”
“Hmm, it’s already past noon, so we should wait until tomorrow.”
I decided to take it easy [余裕 – yoyuu, meaning to have composure or余裕].
There’s a saying that you should take the scenic route when you’re in a hurry.
‘The Grimoire of Magma’s Wrath, Count Sarhan’s whereabouts, the crisis of the Middle Realm… The information the fairies possess is invaluable.’
For that information, I could wait even a month.
Swish-!
Speak of the devil, and a fairy appeared.
It was the fairy I met with Ren.
Was his name Phil?
Phil bowed his head as soon as he saw me.
“I am the administrator fairy, Phil.”
At Phil’s words, reintroducing himself, I also stated my name again.
“Arun Cal Leod, call me Arun.”
“Arun-nim, the administrator meeting has concluded.”
I was delighted at Phil’s words.
“That’s a relief.”
I added.
“It took quite a while; I hope the result was favorable.”
“It was fleeting.”
To those who lived a life close to eternity, the meaning of time was very different from human perception.
‘Well, three days might be short for them.’
I asked Phil again.
“I heard it was a meeting to invite us to the village; what was the decision?”
“It has been decided to limit the invitation to four people. The rest should return to the human village.”
I accepted it without much hesitation.
“I understand.”
“Then, let’s go.”
I said to Gail.
“Olivia, Lillian, you too. Have the rest wait at Marquis Mike’s castle.”
“Yes, Your Highness.”
Gail immediately conveyed the order to the knights.
Phil waited for us to disperse.
Soon, the knights packed their bags and left, and I, Gail, Olivia, and Lillian followed Phil.
“It will be a first in fairy history.”
I tilted my head at Phil’s words.
“Has a human ever been invited to a fairy village?”
The history of fairies can’t simply be compared to human history; it’s a living history.
Fairies started recording events before human language and writing were even created, and even the fairies who recorded that history are still alive.
“The bosom of the World Tree is only allowed to fairies.”
Olivia asked.
“What is the reason for taking us despite that?”
Phil said, unhurried.
“You will learn many things. One thing I can tell you is that the fact that you are the master of the Covenant has had an impact.”
I nodded, and the others didn’t ask any more questions.
Phil suddenly increased his speed.
“I will move quickly, assuming everyone can keep up.”
Phil’s figure disappeared in an instant, becoming a mere dot.
“Oh, my!”
As soon as I finished speaking, I summoned Silwolfen.
I climbed onto Silwolfen’s back and followed Phil.
Lillian fluttered her robe and flew, and Gail and Olivia also ran at terrifying speeds.
As sunset approached, the World Tree loomed increasingly closer.
The scenery seemed the same no matter where you looked, but Phil navigated expertly.
As the size of the trees gradually increased, Phil slowly reduced his speed.
When the surrounding scenery started to change, the energy of the fairies was palpable.
It was clear that they were paying attention to me.
“This way.”
The place Phil guided me to was a truly enormous tree.
There was an entrance leading inside.
Phil went inside first, and we followed.
Among the fairies inside, Ren stood out the most.
Ren greeted us with a smile.
“Was the journey comfortable?”
Phil arranged seats for us, and I, Gail, Olivia, and Lillian each sat down.
I answered as I sat.
“There wasn’t anything particularly special.”
“The matter of the master of the Covenant was a significant topic for us fairies. As a result of the three-day meeting, we decided to extend an invitation to the master of the Covenant.”
I had already heard Ren’s explanation from Phil, so there was nothing new.
“There are many stories to tell. Shall we start with the story of Count Sarhan?”
Ren nodded.
“You mean the group of humans who arrived a while ago? Yes. If we don’t start with that story, there’s no point in inviting you today.”
Ren revealed the conclusion first.
“It is true that we dealt with those humans that the master of the Covenant mentioned.”
Lillian reacted reflexively.
“You’re bragging about killing humans? You pretended to be all peaceful, but you committed murder.”
Ren’s expression remained unchanged, but the expressions of the surrounding fairies instantly twisted.
‘Come to think of it, there are quite a few fairies.’
Not only Ren and Phil, but at least more than ten fairies were visible.
I disregarded the gazes of the other fairies.
There was no reason to stop Lillian either.
I didn’t know the full story, but it was a fact that they killed Count Sarhan’s party.
I calmly spoke.
“The expression ‘dealt with’ is unpleasant, but first, I need to hear the reason why.”
* * *
“The fairies?”
“They are probably in contact with the Crown Prince by now.”
Confidence spread across Daret’s face as he answered the High Priest’s words.
“The arrogance of the fairies who received the title of administrator is beyond imagination. Thanks to that arrogance, it was easy to infiltrate.”
The High Priest smiled slyly.
“It’s the result of the Fifth Priest’s long efforts. Priest Daret is especially outstanding.”
“The fairy society is too transparent, so it was even easier to corrupt. A drop of black ink is enough to contaminate clear water.”
The High Priest nodded.
“The Twelfth Priest candidate also seems like a very pure person.”
“It won’t take long for him to be stained with the flames of purification.”
Marquis Daret’s smile deepened.
* * *
I paid attention to Ren’s words.
“Humans were already tainted by evil.”
Gail immediately retorted.
“We didn’t sense any signs of that at all.”
Gail couldn’t simply believe the fairies’ words.
I felt the same as Gail.
I didn’t meet Count Sarhan, but if he was already tainted by evil, wouldn’t the other lords have noticed?
Ren spoke.
“You can see for yourself.”
I asked, questioning.
“See for myself?”
“Let’s get up.”
As Ren got up, the other fairies also got up.
My party and I followed the fairies, dumbfounded.
‘What is it?’
Ren went ahead and said.
“Most of those tainted by evil have been killed, but some have not. I was wondering if the power of the World Tree could purify them.”
“Are you saying you left them alive for some kind of experiment?”
My voice became sharp without realizing it.
I would rather kill them. What do you think of human life, to leave those tainted by evil for experimentation?
“It’s a necessary measure. If the power of the World Tree can purify them, wouldn’t it be possible to prevent a bloodbath in the Middle Realm?”
I stopped walking at Ren’s words.
“A bloodbath?”
“Fairies are guardians of balance. Evil has the characteristic of spreading faster than anything else. If an unstoppable evil begins to spread among humans, fairies will have no choice but to wage war with humans to protect the Middle Realm.”
Ren’s words continued.
“But if the power of the World Tree can purify evil… then even unconditional slaughter can be prevented.”
I couldn’t answer Ren’s words.
Ren moved again, and I silently followed.
Soon, we arrived.
Three soldiers were visible in a place where trees were intertwined, like a prison.
“That’s…”
Lillian approached.
Ren didn’t stop her.
“Crazy, this is black magic.”
Ren answered Lillian’s words.
“That’s right. It’s black magic. Not just simple black magic…”
“Ancient black magic.”
Olivia asked.
“Ancient black magic? Is it something different from the black magic we know?”
Lillian nodded.
“The progenitor of magic was a dragon. It’s just passed down as a legend to humans.”
Lillian glanced at Ren.
It’s a history that remains a legend to humans, but wouldn’t fairies know the truth?
“You are right. The progenitor of magic is a dragon, and fairies learned magic through that dragon. And it flowed out to dwarves and humans through fairies.”
“Well, it’s a history that’s considered orthodox, but it becomes certain when I hear it from a fairy. Anyway, the progenitor of magic is a dragon. The first magic was black magic; there was no distinction between types.”
Lillian closely observed the humans tainted by evil. It was a terrible sight, but she didn’t flinch.
“Krrr.”
Lillian’s voice became serious as she looked at the soldiers who were making beast-like cries.
“Black magic branched out after magic was passed down from dragons to fairies, dwarves, and humans. Humans studied magic to use it more efficiently than fairies and dwarves.”
Lillian’s explanation was helpful.
“The evil minds of humans stimulated the demons of the Demon Realm. The purpose of ancient black magic is to summon demons.”
Ren concluded Lillian’s explanation.
“That’s right. Humans tried to summon demons through magic and fulfill their wishes through the demons who descended on the Middle Realm. It’s a foolish endeavor, though.”
Ren turned his gaze to me.
“How is it? What are your thoughts on seeing humans tainted by evil? They are merely materials for the descent of demons… They are no longer beings that can be called humans.”
I admitted it.
“That’s right. There seems to be no other option but to kill them.”
“The reason why we had to eliminate the human party, and the reason why we are considering leaving the fairy forest and intervening in the human world, is because of them.”
Ren left the place with the fairies.
It seemed like he felt that we had something to discuss among ourselves.
As the fairies left, I asked Lillian.
“Are you sure it’s ancient black magic?”
“I’m certain. The language engraved on their bodies is an ancient language, and it’s all about summoning demons.”
My expression became serious.
“Demons.”
“I’ve only heard about Your Highness’s western expedition; I don’t know firsthand, but this will be on a different level than that time.”
She’s referring to the Gorgan incident.
“That was a demon. Clearly.”
“A low-level demon? Or a minion of a demon?”
“What’s certain is that it wasn’t a demon that would overwhelm us all.”
Lillian replied.
“This language… I need to study it a little more, but if my understanding is correct, this is not a simple demon summoning. It’s magic related to the descent of the Demon King.”
