72.
“It’s him. The Ruler of the Ruins.”
I barely registered Riorden’s words.
“Ruler of the Ruins?”
“It’s a wyvern that nests and lives by Death Falls. The one that devoured all my comrades.”
Riorden shuddered, as if reliving that day.
David patted Riorden’s shoulder and said, “The orcs are in chaos because of the Wyvern’s Fear. We must move quickly while they’re disoriented.”
The wyvern revealing its presence was a golden opportunity for us.
I nodded. “We’ll hide behind Death Falls. There’s a cave behind the waterfall.”
David looked at me, surprised. “A cave, you say?”
I almost let something slip, but answered casually, “Geographically, there are bound to be caves near giant waterfalls. Death Falls is huge, so there must be one.”
Even as I said it, I knew it was a shot in the dark. I was just making it up.
However, there was no way to scientifically disprove my words in the Calpeon Empire.
Perhaps because of my status as the Crown Prince, Riorden and David didn’t seem to question it much.
“I will find the way again.”
Just then, a huge shadow engulfed the entire canyon.
“Kieeeeeek!”
The orcs were thrown into complete disarray, tripping over each other in the narrow canyon, and we weren’t faring much better.
The sound was far more intense than the cry we’d heard earlier.
My whole body trembled, and I broke out in a cold sweat.
Riorden managed to stammer, “Fear… It’s a pseudo-dragon… It’s called the Ruler of the Ruins because it can use Fear. With that Fear alone, it can subdue most of the monsters in Zone 2.”
I summoned Undine.
‘Purifying Wave.’
Would it even work?
Wyvern Fear wasn’t a poison, but I was hoping for the healing effect contained in the Purifying Wave skill.
Fear didn’t directly inflict damage, but it was a mental attack that caused status abnormalities.
Last time, Undine had entered my body and unleashed the skill directly, but this time was different.
She sprinkled water droplets on me.
It felt like someone was spraying me with a water bottle.
The stuffiness in my chest and the fear and trembling in my heart instantly subsided.
-I can use it on everyone.
I immediately understood why Undine hadn’t entered my body and used the skill from the outside.
I summoned not only other Undines but also Undairon and cast Purifying Wave on all the knights.
As the clear water spread, the knights who had been trembling with Fear regained their senses.
“Y-Your Highness.”
I smiled faintly at Riorden’s surprised voice. “Water spirits are naturally better at healing than attacking. They also have strong resistance to mental attacks like Fear.”
“The biggest reason I lost my comrades was because of that Fear. Even the mages were defenseless…”
I offered a brief word of comfort to Riorden. “No one will die today. Let’s go.”
Riorden nodded.
We left the still-confused orcs behind and moved quickly.
The Ruler of the Ruins, the Wyvern, didn’t attack but circled in the sky, continuously emitting a deafening cry.
The murderous intent in the cry was instilling fear and dread in the weaker creatures on the ground.
‘Amazing.’
If the water spirits hadn’t been constantly working to counteract the effects of Fear, the canyon would probably have become our grave.
I was grateful once again that I was a spirit master.
The end of the canyon was gradually coming into view.
“Kieeeeeek!”
“Isn’t that wyvern acting strange?”
Riorden narrowed his eyes and replied, “There are many orcs… It probably knows we’re here. If so many prey appeared in Zone 2 instead of Zone 3 after so long, it wouldn’t stay still.”
Riorden also seemed suspicious.
David added, “It would be best to find a cave quickly while it’s still in the sky. If it comes down to the ground and starts hunting… the damage will be immense.”
The wyvern flew freely, and its hide was known to be much tougher than that of orcs, able to withstand even steel.
To make matters worse, it also had considerable magic resistance, so I couldn’t inflict much damage on it with my current level.
In other words, it was a monster that was impossible to deal with.
“Let’s move quickly.”
There was no time to wonder why the wyvern was just hovering.
My goal was, after all, to rescue Gale.
‘It would be nice to catch the wyvern too… but even Karen couldn’t catch it and only secretly obtained the sword from its nest before escaping.’
I had no intention of gambling my life for treasure.
I wasn’t alone, either.
“O King!”
And now, the orcs, who were quite far away, were shouting in unison.
* * *
“O King! O King!”
The orcs began to shout as if they were out of their minds, and surprisingly, the Wyvern’s Fear effect disappeared.
“We need to get out of here quickly.”
I nodded at Riorden’s words. “It’s dangerous to be continuously exposed to that shout, directed by the orc shamans.”
Riorden’s voice became more urgent. “Let’s go!”
Kwaaaaaaang-!
The entire canyon shook with a deafening sound the moment Riorden took the lead and sped up.
Kwaaaang-! Kwang-! Kwang-!
“Everyone, take cover!”
I shouted without thinking.
The wyvern was rapidly descending, and its steel-like wings were smashing against the canyon walls.
Kwaaaang-!
The shattered cliffs turned to dust and rained down on us.
It was dust in name only; each piece was a boulder large enough to crush a person.
“Sylphwind!”
I summoned Sylphwind without realizing it.
You didn’t have to summon spirits only when using skills.
‘Sylphwind, can you protect the knights?’
Sylphwind replied, -I can destroy the flying rocks, but it’s impossible to block them all. Instead, summon the children to break the rocks flying in the first wave, and then have Undairon create a water barrier as large as possible.
I immediately accepted Sylphwind’s advice.
Sylphwind, Sylph, and Salamander stepped forward to break the rocks, and Undairon erected a water barrier over our heads.
“Cough!”
I gasped, feeling my mana being drained rapidly.
“Your Highness!”
David immediately noticed the situation.
Without even asking, he lifted me onto his back.
He was so fast that I was already on David’s back the moment I realized it.
“Focus on the spirits. Everyone’s life depends on Your Highness.”
I focused my mind on David’s words.
While supplying mana to the spirits, I also used the Breathing Technique of the Wind to replenish my mana as much as possible.
Of course, the mana consumed was far greater than the mana accumulated, but I didn’t give up and continued to use the Breathing Technique of the Wind.
-Sylphwind, go back.
Summoning Sylphwind to break the rocks wasn’t efficient.
Every time Sylphwind used a skill, the falling rocks definitely turned into dust, but there was no need to expend that much energy.
Since we had a sturdy water barrier around us, I focused on minimizing mana consumption.
Kwang-! Kwaaaang-!
“Kieeeeeek! Kieeeeeek!”
“For the Great King!”
“For the Great King!”
The Wyvern’s Fear became even stronger, and the orcs’ united voices now carried madness.
The situation was far from the battle I had imagined.
‘I’m experiencing all sorts of things while doing quests.’
I was taken aback by this desperate escape, which I hadn’t anticipated, but I calmed myself down.
Things don’t always go as planned.
“Your Highness, Death Falls is not far away.”
I immediately asked, “When does the canyon end?”
“It ends if we run a little further. When we arrive at Death Falls…”
I interrupted Riorden. “We break through the waterfall and enter inside. If there is no cave inside, we move again then.”
I already knew there was a cave inside Death Falls, but I added that just in case.
“Kieeeeeek!”
The Wyvern’s presence grew stronger.
And the end of the canyon was almost within reach.
The roar of the huge waterfall, loud enough to be heard even amidst the wyvern’s chaos, pierced my ears.
Undine confirmed the distance. -The waterfall is very close. And… I’ve never felt such water energy before.
I didn’t know what it meant, but there was no time to ask.
Because I was running low on mana.
Riorden shouted, “I see the waterfall!”
“Undairon!”
I took out what I had planned since I decided to go behind the waterfall.
It was impossible for even the most skilled knight to pass through that huge waterfall.
Only Riorden and David could withstand the force of the water while protecting their bodies, and it was nearly impossible for the rest of the knights.
So, I chose to momentarily disrupt the flow of the waterfall with Undairon.
I wanted to create a small space for one person to pass through, and I had saved mana for that.
I said to Riorden, “I’ll go in first with you.”
“Yes, Your Highness.”
I jumped into the river with Undairon without hesitation.
In front of the waterfall, a huge river flowed, and some of it flowed into the canyon we had passed through.
The flow of wind and earth helped me run comfortably on the water as if it were land.
The knights were also top-notch, if not as good as David and Riorden, so they were following without difficulty.
They weren’t running on the water like Riorden and I, but they were using the nearby path to keep up.
“Undairon!”
Undairon prepared a water storm.
Spirits are affected by the environment.
That was written in the Spirit Arts Book of the Mother.
Death Falls was a waterfall full of vitality that didn’t match the Forest of Darkness at all.
I understood the name Death Falls as I approached the waterfall.
The power of the waterfall, as if falling from the sky, was beyond what I had imagined.
Kwaaaang-!
The battle between the Ruler of the Ruins and the Orc King in the canyon seemed to be intensifying.
‘It’s an opportunity. A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Since the king has come, the orc legion’s main base is as good as empty.’
Of course, the dungeon inside Death Falls wasn’t an easy place, but it was much better than facing the Ruler of the Ruins, the Wyvern, or the Orc King.
And at the end of the dungeon, there was a path leading to the orc legion’s main base.
It was certain because I wrote it, but I felt a slight anxiety.
‘There’s no other choice now.’
I poured all my remaining mana into Undairon.
Undairon unleashed a water storm, and a storm as huge as Death Falls crashed into the waterfall.
“Everyone, go in behind when the space opens!”
I uttered those words and focused on Undairon.
Kwaaaaaaang-! Kwang-!
A part of the waterfall was slightly splitting apart.
