Hyung, Am I Cute? (406/500)
Korea is buzzing because Director Go Dong-soo won the Palme d’Or at Cannes Film Festival.
I didn’t become as much of a hot topic as I thought I would.
At least, not in the news.
On YouTube, word about me spread little by little.
Fortunately, unlike celebrities, my personal information isn’t widely known, so most conclusions end with, “He’s really good at interpreting.”
At this rate, I think I’ll become moderately popular and then be forgotten. Probably.
“Hyung.”
“Yeah?”
“We have to take the presents.”
“Yeah, we do.”
Today is the day we go back to daycare.
Siha seems excited to see his friends after a long time.
Siha was worried about what presents to get his friends when we returned from France.
Magnets and postcards are nice, but they’re likely to become a burden.
So, I concluded that it would be better to get them something to eat.
I bought a lot of French snacks.
It was a traditional French biscuit called LU, which is said to be the best-selling snack in France.
When I ate it, it just tasted familiar.
Well, that’s how snacks are.
“Here’s a paper bag.”
I put them in a paper bag since they were bulky.
Including Siha, there are 10 children in the daycare. I bought exactly 10 snacks.
I didn’t bother buying souvenirs for other people.
I didn’t want to carry a lot of luggage.
If there’s anything I bought, it’s some postcards I got when I went to the museum.
I chose them because they weren’t bulky and seemed easy to carry.
I also liked the pictures on the postcards.
“Shall we go then?”
“Yeah! Samchun [Uncle]. Siha’s going to daycare!”
“I’ll be back.”
“I’ll be back!”
My uncle got up from the sofa and saw us off at the front door.
He probably finds it annoying and wants to lie down, but whenever we leave, he stands in front of the door as if telling us to come back anytime.
“Okay. Come back safely.”
I’ll be back. Come back safely.
When my father and mother passed away, I thought I would never be able to say or hear those words again.
But my uncle says ‘come back’ to us like this.
It feels like a promise to come back safely, not just a greeting.
Maybe we created this culture of greeting each other with such words to make a promise every day for the day we’re supposed to return.
“Yes! I’ll be back.”
I said that and took Siha’s hand and went out the door.
We arrived at the daycare quickly by car.
It’s another energetic start to the day.
“Siha, Hyung [Older brother or close male friend] will pick you up later. Okay?”
“Okay!”
“Then I’ll be going.”
“Hyung!”
“Yeah?”
“Come back!”
“Okay!”
It was my first day back at work in a while.

Siha dragged the shopping bag and looked at the teacher.
“Teacher, this is a present!”
“Wow! You even have a present for the teacher?”
“Yeah! It’s French snack. Samchun said if you eat it, you can see France.”
“Really? That’s the kind of taste expression that only comes out in cooking manga [Japanese comics], isn’t it?”
“Huh? Cooking manga?”
“Yeah. It’s nothing. Thank you. I’ll enjoy it.”
Next, Siha gave a snack present to the head teacher.
The head teacher smiled and stroked Siha’s head.
“Head Teacher, this is yummy.”
“Yeah. Did Siha eat it too?”
“No.”
“???”
Siha was saying it was delicious without even trying it.
Siha had plenty of delicious food in France, so he didn’t bother trying this.
Of course, Sihyuk tasted it though.
“But there’s Siha’s too.”
Since the children would all taste it together anyway, I prepared Siha’s snack as well.
It was important to share things like this with friends.
“I see.”
The head teacher looked at Sihyuk favorably.
I thought about it when he brought snacks before, but he always makes sure to include something for Siha in the presents.
No one taught him, but Sihyuk’s consideration felt really good.
“Seungjun! Hana!”
Siha goes to deliver presents to his friends.
The twins perked up their ears and raised their heads at Siha’s call.
“Siha!”
“Siha!”
The three, who had talked on the phone yesterday, hugged each other.
Hana looked at Yeonju and gestured.
It meant to join in.
Yeonju felt that joining in was a bit childish, but on the other hand, she wanted to be together.
But since Hana called her, she reluctantly joined in the hug.
In a circle.
Seungjun said.
“Okay, everyone lie down!”
Seungjun used his strength to press down on Siha and Hana’s backs.
They naturally lay down in a circle.
“When I say one, two, three, we’ll shout ‘fighting’. Okay?”
“Huh?”
“Oppa [Older brother], why are we doing this?”
“I don’t know. Why are we doing this?”
But Seungjun wanted to do this cheer.
Recently, while playing soccer, he saw his father and graduate students cheering before a soccer game.
“I don’t know. Just do it quickly. One, two, three! Fighting!”
“Fighting!”
They don’t know why they’re doing it, but they all shout ‘fighting’ enthusiastically.
Siha blinked at the sudden event, then remembered his original purpose and took out the snacks from the shopping bag.
“Seungjun! This! Hana and Yeonju. This! It’s a present! French snack.”
“Wow! French snack!”
“Wow! That looks delicious.”
“Thank you.”
Everyone liked it.
Siha now went to Jongsu.
“Oh? Lee Siha. I heard you went to France? I’m going to France later too!”
“Huh? Jongsu. If you go to France, you have to see Monet and Manet’s paintings.”
“Huh? Paintings?”
“Yeah. Siha saw them all.”
“Are, are you showing off that you went to France?”
“No. I’m going to give you French snack?”
“Oh? Oh. Thanks. But I’m going to France too!”
“Yeah! You have to go! You have to go three times!”
“Why three times?”
Jongsu had such a question.
But he knew that Siha liked the number 3, so he thought he just said it.
“I’ll buy you snack presents from other countries later. I’ll tell you everything I see.”
“No. It’s okay.”
“Why!”
“Siha’s busy.”
“Hey!”
Siha handed a snack to Jaehwi.
“Th, thank you. Siha. I’ll enjoy it.”
“Yeah.”
Next were Eunwoo and Yundong.
“Puhaha. French snack! Puhaha.”
“Thank you.”
The two were the same as ever.
Anyway, with this, the gift-giving ceremony was over.
Everyone opened the snacks and put them in their mouths to taste them.
The daycare became quiet as they tasted the snacks.
Jongsu had something he was curious about and asked Siha.
“But what did you do in France?”
Siha got up from his seat.
The teacher was puzzled. Why is he getting up from his seat when he could just talk while sitting down?
“Siha saw paintings. And ate delicious things. And drew pictures.”
“What. Isn’t that what you do here every day?”
Jongsu said the same thing as Seungjun, who he had talked to on the phone yesterday.
“No. It’s different. I saw really pretty paintings, and I got rained on. The rain was cool.”
“Oh? I see.”
“And I went to Cannes too. Cannes. The director received an award too.”
“Award?”
“Golden Palm Tree Award.”
The Palme d’Or suddenly became an award where the golden was sleepy.
Jongsu was dumbfounded by the name of the award.
“What’s the Golden Sleepy Award?”
“Hyung said it’s the first place award. First place.”
“Sleepy? Was the director sleepy?”
“I saw the director yawning. The director was sleepy.”
Well, he could yawn since he received the award at the very end.
The teacher corrected the children’s words.
“Siha, it’s not the Golden Sleepy Award, it’s the Palme d’Or.”
“Ah!”
Siha slapped his forehead with his hand.
It turned out it was the Palme d’Or.
He had been a little sleepy while watching the awards ceremony with Hyung.
Listening to them speak in English and French, he couldn’t understand what they were saying, so it just made him sleepy like white noise.
Still, Hyung gently interpreted for him, so he understood some of it.
“Siha knows French. Merci! Merci!”
Seungjun asked out of curiosity.
“Oh! What does it mean?”
“Thank you.”
“Wow, amazing! Siha even speaks French!”
“But Siha only knows this. Ah! Bonjour! I know this. Hello.”
“Oh! I’ve heard that too. Bonjour!”
The kids all repeated bonjour and merci.
Then they all got excited that they could speak French too.
Anyone would think they could have fluent conversations.
“But why did the director receive the award?”
“Because he made a good movie!”
“Oh! Yeonju, didn’t you appear in that movie too?”
Yeonju nodded.
In fact, Yeonju knew that Director Go Dong-soo had received the Palme d’Or.
Her dad told her as soon as he saw it.
Yeonju’s eyes widened too.
Although her parents were busy and couldn’t go to France with her as guardians, she was still happy.
She was really happy that the movie she appeared in was well-made and received an award.
“I, I got invited to the premiere.”
“???”
The children tilted their heads because they didn’t know what a premiere was.
Siha remembered Hyung using the word premiere. He didn’t know what it meant, but he nodded roughly when he said he was going to see a movie then.
“Is it boring?”
“It’s not boring, it’s a premiere. Uh? It’s when they watch it with people who are going to watch the movie for the first time in Korea!”
“Why?”
“I don’t know? Is it like an event?”
Of course, Yeonju didn’t know the details either.
The teacher told them about that part.
“There are various reasons, but it’s to see if the movie is fun before showing it to everyone. They gather a few people and check if it’s fun.”
The children nodded.
Of course, it’s clear that it’s a well-made movie since it received the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
Of course, even so, the box office success may be different, but it will be a hit if possible.
It’s the Palme d’Or, after all.
Yeonju said again.
“Ah! Anyway, I asked if I could go with my friends. But they said everyone can come!”
“!!!”
“Siha wanted to watch it with his friends too!”
Unfortunately, Yeonju made the first move this time.
The teacher blinked.
“So when is the premiere?”
“The day after tomorrow.”
“What?!”
“They said it’s in the afternoon.”
The teacher slapped her forehead.
She thought she should contact the parents quickly if it was the day after tomorrow.
It seemed like the daycare teacher would have to participate as a guardian.
Because the parents can’t take time off urgently.
“My dad said he would tell the teacher?”
“Oh? I guess your father forgot. Ah, wait! Siha. Is Hyung coming too?”
“Huh? Hyung’s going too.”
“Ah. I see. Do they tell you the number of people separately there?”
The teacher suddenly became complicated.
If it’s a premiere that the kids were invited to, it’s not a press distribution premiere for reporters or distributors, but an audience premiere.
In that case, shouldn’t they prepare tickets according to the number of people and tell them in advance?
“Teacher will make a call for a moment. Okay?”
“Yes!”
The teacher exchanged glances with the head teacher.
Nod.
Suddenly, it became a situation where she had to make phone calls.
***
I heard a lot of stories while coming home with Siha.
I don’t know why it became a story about going to the premiere together.
It wasn’t a problem to go.
However, I don’t know if I can focus on watching the movie.
I’ve already talked a lot with the director, understood his intentions, and put my feelings about it into the translation.
Of course, the translation won’t be out at the premiere.
It was natural since it was in Korea.
It’s better that way. It’ll be less focused on me.
Isn’t that so?
No one will say who translated it until it’s released overseas.
Something that’s going to be a hot topic anyway is being extended.
There were quite a few articles in foreign countries.
Saying I’m good at French. Along with my saying that it’s natural for an interpreter to be good at interpreting.
No, this person is really.
I can’t complain because he’s a foreign reporter.
Let’s just not look at it. Koreans won’t read these articles anyway.
I didn’t want to know either, but actor Kim Seok-hyun insisted on finding it and sending me the link.
I wonder if it’s true that he said he could speak English.
“Hyung. Hyung. I’m looking forward to the premiere.”
“Yeah. I’m looking forward to it too.”
Siha will finally get to see the movie.
Actually, I could ask the director and see it for free even if it wasn’t a premiere.
But it’s better to watch it in a movie theater. Of course!
There’s that kind of taste.
“I’m home.”
“I’m home!”
My uncle greeted us.
“Welcome.”
