“Hyung, aren’t I cute?” Episode 407 (407/500)
Orphanage kids were invited to the premiere.
The guardians consisted of four people: the orphanage teacher, me, and Professor Smith.
“Hyung. Many camera.”
“Yeah, there are a lot.”
Reporters were also attending the premiere.
I guess there would be critics too, right?
The reporters had a separate premiere, so coming here probably means they want to write articles about the audience’s reactions.
And since the audience premiere also has small events, they’ll probably write articles about that too.
Seeing them constantly covering and writing about something new, even about the same movie, makes me nod in agreement.
Well, it’s a movie I’m really interested in right now.
Anyway, as I was about to sit down, a staff member approached.
“Hello.”
“Huh?”
It wasn’t a staff member, but actor Kim Seok-hyun.
I didn’t recognize him because he was wearing a hat pulled down low.
“Are you sure you can wear clothes like that? In a tracksuit?”
“I’ll change.”
“And a hat like that? Won’t it mess up your hair?”
“I only wore it for a second. What.”
It seemed like he was joking around like this to approach us.
He’s such a fun person.
Kim Seok-hyun took off his hat and said,
“We’re doing a stage greeting after the movie. Would Yeon-ju and Si-ha like to come up too?”
“Ah, just a moment. Let me ask first.”
I asked Professor Smith to ask Yeon-ju if she wanted to go up on stage.
Yeon-ju said she would definitely go up.
I looked at Si-ha.
To be honest, Si-ha only has a brief role in the movie, so I wondered if he should go up.
I mean, come on. He appears almost as a cameo.
Wouldn’t it be strange for a child actor to appear on a stage where the actors are greeting?
But actually, Si-ha does have an important role!
Then again, he went to the awards ceremony, so I guess he could go to the premiere too.
The difference is that this is Korea, which is a bit different.
“Si-ha. They said they’re doing a stage greeting after the movie. Do you want to go up?”
“What about hyung [older brother or male friend]?”
“Hyung won’t go.”
“Then Si-ha won’t go either.”
Actor Kim Seok-hyun says from the side.
“I think Si-hyeok should go up too? You’re a related party. You also did the translation.”
“The translation isn’t being shown today, though.”
“Still.”
“It’s a bit much for me to go up on a stage where the actors are going up.”
“You’re going up with your kid. What.”
Si-ha says, ‘If I go with hyung, I’ll go up!’
Actually, wouldn’t it be weird for us to go up?
“What about the director?”
“The director is *obviously* going up. After talking to him today, he said Si-hyeok and Si-ha can just come up comfortably. If it was a greeting before the movie started, you both wouldn’t know, but today it’s after the movie.”
“Ah…. I understand for now.”
“Okay. Then I’ll keep that in mind.”
Kim Seok-hyun gave a playful smile and poked my side.
A person who suddenly comes close.
When I see things like the Drama Awards, the actors all seem aloof, but this actor doesn’t have that.
He’s kind of friendly.
“Then see you after the movie.”
“Yes. See you.”
Actor Kim Seok-hyun left.
We sat down. First, an announcement came on, and the movie started.
Camera moving from left to right.
Two TV remotes are placed side by side, and an actor appears.
On the way to work.
Cars pass by quickly, and the subway also passes by.
Standing blankly among the people.
The busy commuting scenery passes by in an instant, and the company appears.
The memory of seeing it in the early stages of translation comes back vividly, and I nod in agreement.
‘The PF [Project Finance] team is formed.’
And then the villain, Team 2 Manager, appears.
Kim Seok-hyun follows after being told to come upstairs for a moment.
When he takes out a cigarette, Kim Seok-hyun, as an employee, naturally takes out a lighter.
Flick.
He takes a deep puff and says as he exhales.
“The chairman is watching this project closely. Do well.”
“Yes. I will do well.”
“Originally, an organization has to go together.”
“Yes?”
“So you have to help the assistant managers, managers, and promising employees. Push them and pull them. You know?”
“Yes. I know.”
“So if something is in progress, report to me.”
“Report?”
Team 2 Manager glances at Kim Seok-hyun and nods.
Kim Seok-hyun recalls a conversation he had with his colleagues at the company.
Team 2 Manager is crazy about performance. But he’s good at getting promoted because he has connections.
And he’s also taken credit for things.
Well, these kinds of rumors. I start to think that they might be true.
“Yes. I understand. I can report quickly and accurately.”
“Okay. But you don’t usually smoke?”
“No. I do.”
“I was wondering why you were just standing there without smoking. Smoke.”
“Yes.”
He holds the cigarette and lights it himself with the lighter.
A sigh and lament are mixed in with the breath he takes deeply and exhales.
Team 2 Manager doesn’t notice it and looks at the sky.
He puts out the cigarette, pats him on the shoulder, and turns around.
Kim Seok-hyun makes a playful expression, but then Team 2 Manager turns around.
He turns his face back to normal.
“Oh, right. Don’t tell anyone else. You have that much sense, right?”
“I may not have a sense of romance, but I have a great sense of this.”
“기가 맥힙니까? 내는 기가 찹니더 [Are you amazed? I’m speechless.].”
“푸하하 [Puhaha – laughter]!”
“Was it a little funny?”
“Totally!”
Kim Seok-hyun gave a thumbs up.
The manager turns around again with a proud expression.
At that moment, Kim Seok-hyun makes a playful expression with his mouth, saying, “기가 맥힙니까? 내는 기가 찹니더.”
“푸하하하 [Puhahahaha – louder laughter].”
It could be a serious atmosphere, but he gives these silly 웃음 [laughter] points from time to time to make the audience laugh.
The scene changes.
This time, Team 3 Manager appears.
It’s a similar proposal to before, but the aspect is different. He indirectly tells him to think about which line he’s going to ride [which side he will support].
While they’re talking, the phone rings.
It wasn’t the phone on the desk.
It wasn’t employee Kim Seok-hyun’s phone either.
“Ah, sorry. I’ll take this call for a moment.”
Team 3 Manager takes out another phone.
He carries two phones.
One for work. One for home.
“Yes. My daughter. Why did you call Dad?”
「I called because I missed Dad? When are you coming home, Dad?」
It was Yeon-ju’s voice.
“I’ll go when work is done.”
「If you come home early today, can you buy me a strawberry cake?」
“Why a strawberry cake?”
「I studied hard at daycare today, and it was so hard. Today is a day I want to be praised.」
“Praise you with a strawberry cake?”
「Yes!」
“Okay. Dad will buy you a strawberry cake.”
「With a 평행이 [parallelogram] character on it.」
“Actually, you want the 평행이 character more than the cake, don’t you?”
「No, I don’t.」
“Okay.”
Team 3 Manager ended the call.
When he asks, ‘Where were we?’, the answer comes back, ‘I think we said everything.’
“Then I’ll go.”
Saying this, the scene changes.
The scene of going to buy a cake shows him buying a cake with a character on it.
“I don’t know what’s so good about this parallelogram face.”
Team 3 Manager shakes his head, looking at the parallelogram character’s face.
As he goes home like that and opens the door, his daughter greets him and hugs him.
“Dad!”
“My daughter!”
Yeon-ju hugs him tightly and then sniffs.
“Dad! Cigarette smell!”
“Huh? Does it smell? Dad smoked a long time ago?”
“Yeon-ju doesn’t know if Dad is a cigarette or a cigarette is Dad.”
“Wow. Our Yeon-ju can even say things like that? Dad needs to reflect? Hold the cake and go in. Dad will wash up quickly.”
“Okay. You have to come quickly.”
“Yes.”
His wife says, ‘Honey, you’re home?’, and takes off his suit.
After talking to each other for a while, an urgent phone call rings.
Not the home phone, but the work phone.
He quickly answers without asking his wife for permission.
It’s a different aspect than before.
He urgently receives a work call and starts talking about this and that.
Yeon-ju, who is in the living room, has already taken out the 평행이 character from the cake.
“Shall we call too? 평행아 [Parallelogram]?”
Watching her dad, Yeon-ju also talks on the phone 재미있게 [funnily/enjoyably].
Showing the gap between adults and children, the scene changes.
‘It’s fun to see it all again like this.’
I’ve never had a chance to fully appreciate it while translating the lines and talking with the director.
I’ve seen scenes over and over again.
The meanings I knew. The directing I aimed for.
Seeing it full-time, I realized how beautifully it was woven together.
They say that movies are more fun to enjoy the more you see, and it definitely seems to be true.
‘It’s ending.’
The story unfolds 재미있게 [enjoyably], and the time in the story passes quickly.
The project is successfully completed, and Team 2 Manager fails to get promoted, pushed back by Team 3 Manager.
Employee Kim Seok-hyun is also promoted while working on the project, and another promotion is scheduled after it ends.
He rode the line well.
And the scene changes to show Team 2 Manager smoking with him again.
“Want to smoke?”
“Sure.”
Team 2 Manager lights his cigarette with a lighter.
And holds the lighter out to Kim Seok-hyun to light his cigarette.
Same background, different actions.
“I decided to quit the company and go to Busan. I’m going to find a new job there.”
“Yes?”
“Did you know that Team 3 Manager and I joined the company at the same time?”
“Huh? Um.”
“You wouldn’t know, but we fought often. But I can’t stand it anymore. The fact that he’s above me.”
“I see.”
“I wonder what this is all about.”
Team 2 Manager looked at Kim Seok-hyun.
“You saw how desperately I tried to climb up, right? I thought everything would work out if I succeeded. So I even became a manager. But now I wonder what meaning this has. I was so focused on success that I missed a lot.”
“Yes…….”
“Don’t miss it. If you have a family, cherish them. It’s too late for me, but I’m going to start doing that now.”
“I understand.”
“If you have any hard feelings towards me, forgive me. I’m going.”
Team 2 Manager leaves.
Kim Seok-hyun is just watching that figure.
He doesn’t make a playful expression on his back, but just looks at him with pitiful eyes.
And it goes to thought.
[I knew. Why he made that choice. The story he just told might be true, but the decisive trigger was probably his family.]
The scene changes and shows a few weeks ago.
Team 2 Manager looks at his phone with a serious expression.
He shows himself covering his mouth. His phone contains CCTV footage.
Si-ha appears.
“Dad~ Dad~ When are you coming? Si-ha is playing well with 할무니 [grandmother] here. 할부지 [grandfather] is playing with Si-ha.”
He sincerely puts his hands together and says.
“Dad. I miss you~ I miss you~”
Team 2 Manager shows silent tears.
His son who lives in Busan. He left him with Si-ha’s grandmother and grandfather.
He calls his mother.
「Oh~ son. What’s going on at this hour?」
“I was thinking about it after seeing the CCTV footage. Mom. I’m thinking of going down to Busan.”
「Huh?」
“That’s right. Actually, I want to have Mom and Dad live in Seoul, but the house prices and cost of living are too expensive here. And I’m a little worried about being too far away from my child.”
「Why? Is work too hard?」
“No. It’s too hard to be apart. I think I’ve been looking too much at success. I thought it would be nice to live in Seoul without envying anyone, but I don’t think that’s necessarily the case.”
「We’d like you to be here. It’s good for Si-ha too.」
“I’m going to go down right now, so please be aware.”
「Are you coming down now because it’s hard?」
“Because I miss you too much.”
Kim Seok-hyun watches him making that call.
And realizes.
[So that’s why you were so desperate.]
The camera movement moves from left to right.
The scene changes.
Team 2 Manager hugging Si-ha after coming down to Busan.
Si-ha says. ‘Dad. You don’t smell like cigarettes!’
Team 2 Manager says. ‘I don’t smoke anymore.’
The scene changes.
Team 3 Manager, who always does well at home, hugs Yeon-ju.
Actor Kim Seok-hyun hugs his lover.
[I wonder if the manager is doing well?]
[I’ll assume you’re doing well.]
[Just like I’m doing well.]
The movie ends and the ending credits roll.
Clap clap clap.
The sound of applause echoes. Until the ending credits are all up.
The reaction was 뜨거웠다 [enthusiastic].
And the lights came on.
탁 [Tak – sound of a switch]!
The assistant director comes up and proceeds.
“Did you all enjoy the movie?”
Now it’s time for the stage greeting.
