Extracurricular 59: Vacation (13)
The omelet rice and spaghetti disappeared quickly.
Siha placed the spoons on the table, and I put the remaining omelet rice in a bowl and set it down.
I brought the pot of cooked spaghetti and placed it on the table.
A delicious aroma filled the air, making my stomach rumble.
When was the last time I had such a satisfying meal?
I made a mental note to avoid ‘Happiness for 10,000 Won’ [a presumably cheap meal option] again.
Uncle said, with a piece of pizza in his mouth.
“Oh. Is the main course finally here?”
“Yes. But it was made quickly since you didn’t eat much of the pizza.”
“Still, nothing beats this pizza.”
“I think it’s worth a try, though, don’t you think?”
“Are you looking down on it because it only cost 6,000 Won [a cheap price]!”
“I’m not looking down on it. You’re just feeling guilty about not appreciating it.”
Uncle smoothly changed the subject.
He showed Siha the cheese stretching from the pizza in his mouth, boasting.
“Siha. Look at this. Doesn’t it look amazing?”
“Uncle. Don’t talk with your mouth full.”
I chuckled at Siha’s reprimand.
Who would have expected that response?
Uncle chewed and swallowed before speaking.
“It’s not in my mouth anymore! Here! Isn’t the pizza delicious?!”
“Yeah. But this looks more delicious.”
Siha took a spoonful of omelet rice, blew on it, and put it in his mouth.
“How do you know it’s more delicious without even trying it?”
“Then should we trade bites?”
“Hahaha. I see what you’re trying to do, but I’m not trading.”
“Then fine. I don’t need to trade either.”
“But if Siha *specially* asks, there’s no reason to refuse.”
“It’s okay.”
Siha scooped up some spaghetti, and the cheese stretched high.
He waved the spaghetti at Uncle.
“I have cheese too!”
“That cheese is completely different from the cheese on this pizza.”
“You said it’s all the same once it goes into your stomach.”
“It’s different when it hits your tongue! And I have this cola, too!”
Uncle gulped down the cola.
Siha munched on the spaghetti, then looked at him with longing eyes.
“Okay, Uncle. Let’s trade for the cola.”
It seemed he was more interested in the cola than the pizza.
Spaghetti and cola actually go quite well together.
Uncle grinned as if he had him cornered.
“Okay, then Siha gets one sip of cola, and I get one spoonful of omelet rice?”
Siha shook his head.
“No! I get three sips of cola, and Uncle gets one spoonful of omelet rice.”
“What makes you think you deserve three sips?!”
“I’m Lee Siha.”
“What does being Lee Siha have to do with three sips? You don’t like the number 3 so much that you want three sips, do you?”
“That’s right.”
“Really?!”
Uncle stared at Siha in disbelief.
I chuckled at the sight.
It was my turn to intervene.
“Wait!”
“Why, Si-hyeok?”
“Half of the omelet rice and spaghetti belongs to me, so what’s the point of negotiating only with Siha?”
“So you’re saying you need to drink three sips of cola too?”
“No. I’ll allow this exchange if you accept my proposal.”
“What is it?”
“Instead of one sip or three sips, let’s draw lots.”
“Draw lots?”
“Just a moment.”
I took out my phone and opened a ladder game app [a type of random selection game].
I had downloaded it because it looked fun, but I didn’t know I would use it today.
“Okay. A ladder game to decide which cup Siha will drink from, and a ladder game to decide which spoon Uncle can use to eat. Let’s decide with this.”
“Hmm. I’m in.”
“Hyung, I like it too.”
Since both agreed, it seemed like we could start.
“Siha’s cups are: a soju glass [small shot glass], an espresso shot glass, a paper cup, a mug, and a large beer glass.”
Uncle said.
“Anything but the mug is fine.”
“I made it fair.”
“A 40 percent chance of getting something good. But a paper cup isn’t bad either.”
“That’s true.”
I showed the ladder to Siha.
Siha carefully looked at the five options.
Siha is usually lucky, so he’ll probably pick something good, right?
I secretly hoped so.
“This one! The third one!”
Uncle said.
“You were going to pick 3 anyway, why did you think so hard!”
That’s true.
The third option went down the ladder.
It went left and right, and one cup was selected.
Uncle slightly opened his mouth.
“Is this for real?”
Siha won the large beer glass.
“Yes!”
Siha jumped up and down, throwing an uppercut into the air with his fist.
He quickly went to the kitchen and brought back the large beer glass.
He opened the cola and poured it into the glass.
It seemed to hold about 400mL [~13.5 oz].
“I’ll only pour this much.”
“You filled it to the brim, why are you acting like you’re being considerate?”
“I can share it with Hyung! Right? Hyung.”
Sniff.
He poured this much to share with me.
Siha is an angel.
“Thank you, Siha. If you had gotten the soju glass, we wouldn’t have been able to share.”
“Then I would have just tasted it and given the rest to Hyung!”
There’s a saying that people share even a single bean, and Siha was putting that into practice with me.
As expected of Lee Siha.
Uncle pouted.
“Okay. I’ll get something huge and take all the omelet rice and spaghetti.”
“No way. You can only scoop once.”
“How stingy.”
“Uncle is more stingy.”
“Well, whatever. Si-hyeok. What about my spoon?”
When Uncle asked about the spoon, I smiled.
“First, a toothpick.”
“A toothpick is too much!!! Siha’s worst was still the soju glass, but a toothpick is really pushing it!”
“Hey. You just have to avoid getting it.”
“Keep it fair!”
“Ugh. Like a child. I have no choice then. A teaspoon.”
“Yeah. A teaspoon is better than a toothpick.”
“Next is an ice cream spoon.”
“That’s too much. That’s a little bigger than a teaspoon.”
“You just have to avoid getting it.”
Uncle reluctantly nodded at my words.
“Okay. Two bad ones are out.”
“Next is a spoon!”
“Next is a ladle, right?”
“No. Next is lettuce!”
“Lettuce isn’t a spoon!”
Uncle’s reaction was that it was too much.
“You have to wrap it up in the lettuce and put it all in your mouth in one bite.”
“Didn’t you hear me say it’s not a spoon?”
“Lettuce isn’t bad. You can put more on it than a spoon.”
“Who wraps omelet rice in lettuce! It’s a punishment!”
“Then cabbage?”
“What’s the difference?!”
“Anyway, the last one is a ladle!”
To summarize, it was like this.
A teaspoon, an ice cream spoon, a spoon, lettuce, a ladle.
Five in total.
Uncle had to pick one of these.
“Okay. I’ll pick the ladle and scoop it all up like a mountain.”
Uncle was burning with enthusiasm.
I don’t know if he’ll be able to pick it.
“Hmm.”
Uncle was looking at the five options very carefully, trying to choose.
A serious look that I haven’t seen in a while.
The problem is that it’s a ladder game.
But what do you see when you stare so intently?
This is purely a matter of luck.
“Okay. I’m going with 3 too.”
Siha immediately reacted to Uncle’s words.
“3 is always right!”
“Okay. I’ll trust you this once!”
Uncle also chose the third one.
The ladder went down. Going left and right, one spoon was chosen.
[Teaspoon]
Uncle clutched his head.
“Ugh! Why does it have to be that!!!”
Siha said.
“As expected, 3 was right!”
“What’s right about it! It’s the worst!”
“Uncle’s worst is the best for me!”
Siha happily drank the cola.
Uncle looked at Siha and went to the kitchen.
And he took out a teaspoon.
“Okay. I’ll show you that you can eat a lot even with a teaspoon.”
Uncle stabbed the omelet rice with the teaspoon.
No matter how I look at it, that seems impossible.
“Huuu.”
He carefully lifts and scoops it up.
Thud. Thud.
The omelet rice flows down from above.
About a bite-sized amount of rice is clumped together on the teaspoon.
“Oooo.”
Uncle had a happy face.
He was really carefully lifting it up, but Siha saw that and immediately took action.
“Whoo.”
The rice easily swayed in the wind.
It tilted in an instant, and the rice fell off.
“No!”
Uncle’s desperate voice echoed.
About three grains remained on the teaspoon as traces of the rice that was supposed to be there.
“That’s invalid! Where’s the wind coming from!”
“That’s why Uncle should have eaten it quickly.”
“Are you going to be so unfair? Don’t you feel bad that Uncle got this teaspoon?”
“Why should I feel bad when Uncle chose it?”
“I’m mad because that’s true?”
Uncle put the teaspoon in his mouth with a hollow feeling.
“I can’t taste anything.”
“Uncle. Do you have no appetite?”
“You made me lose it?”
Siha shook his head and took a big spoonful with his own spoon.
And he held it out to Uncle.
“I’ll give you a bite specially.”
“Are you giving me medicine after giving me the disease?”
“It’s better than not giving medicine after giving the disease.”
“What can I say to you.”
Uncle opened his mouth and ate the spoonful that Siha gave him.
“Um! Delicious!”
Anyway, they shared with each other.
“Let’s stop now and eat quickly and clean up.”
“Okay!”
Dinner unintentionally became longer.
Well, it was fun though.
***
The end of the game was approaching.
We had eaten breakfast, lunch, and dinner, so it was time to check the remaining amount.
Of course, last place was already decided. It was me.
I had no intention of winning, so it was natural to be in last place with 0 won.
The first place was also decided. Lee Siha.
At the point where he had already increased the money, this was as good as a finished game.
We gathered in the living room and sat at the table.
“Okay. Now, we’ll reveal the remaining amount. I have 0 won. I’m in last place.”
“You had no intention of winning at all.”
Uncle looked at me in disbelief.
Siha said.
“Hyung. You’re cool.”
“Are you just saying that because Hyung is in last place!”
“Hyung is cool even if he’s last in the whole school!”
Siha. Hyung was a good student…
I was at the top of my class even in college…
Well, let’s skip that.
“Then we’ll reveal Siha’s amount and Uncle’s amount at the same time. Everyone, please put up your money envelopes.”
The two took out the white envelopes with the money in them.
Uncle had a very confident expression.
It meant he had finished calculating everything.
But the time for that face to frown was not far off.
“Then let’s reveal it.”
Money came out of the white envelope.
Uncle: 2,500 won.
Lee Siha: 16,000 won.
When Uncle saw Siha’s money, a question mark appeared above his head.
“What? Why do you have 16,000 won? Isn’t that cheating!”
“No! I earned this money.”
“You earned money?”
“Yeah. I used this money to buy paper and crayons and sold drawings.”
“!!!”
Uncle had a look like he had been hit in the back of the head.
“No way! That’s cheating!”
“No, it’s not.”
“Selling drawings is cheating!”
“No. I sold it using the money I spent, so it’s not cheating.”
I chimed in with Siha’s words.
“That’s right. It’s not cheating.”
“This brother scam team!”
Uncle pointed his finger at us.
No. A brother scam team?
It’s too much to say that when we legitimately increased the 10,000 won.
“Uncle. Just admit it now. You lost.”
“I can’t believe this… My useless gift collection…”
“Were you really going to buy something useless if you won?!”
“They sell it as a collection, but it doesn’t come out often.”
“It’s useless!”
“It was a rule that you wouldn’t complain while buying it.”
“Since Uncle lost, don’t buy such useless things. Got it?”
“Tch.”
Siha approached Uncle and tugged at his sleeve.
“Uncle. Are you going to buy me what I want now?”
“Yeah. I lost, so tell me. No, wait. Si-hyeok, you lost too.”
“Hyung will definitely buy it for you.”
Well, I wanted to buy Siha whatever he wanted, even if he didn’t play this game.
“So what do you want?”
“Extend our school librarian’s vacation a little longer.”
“Even if you bought the school, you couldn’t extend the vacation.”
“Why?”
“Because the period you can rest is fixed.”
“Who decides that?”
“The Ministry of Education?”
“Then buy the Ministry of Education.”
“Say something that makes sense!”
“You said you’d buy me what I want.”
“No matter how much Uncle has, he doesn’t have enough money to buy the Ministry of Education.”
“Then Uncle, work quickly.”
“No, I’ll buy the Ministry of Education.”
“Yes!”
Did he hate working that much?
Uncle roughly ruffled Siha’s hair with his hand.
“I’m kidding. What do you really want me to buy you? Don’t you have anything you want?”
“I don’t have anything that comes to mind right now, so I’ll use it later.”
“…The deadline is three months. Tell me within that time.”
“Uncle is stingy.”
“You were more stingy when you blew on it earlier?”
The two bickered again.
The last day of vacation ended as usual.
