In the game, the ‘Black Dragon’s Eye’ Iphian raid was designed as a fairly standard dragon raid. Once the battle commenced and Iphian landed in the fortress courtyard, the vanguard heroes, who had been waiting, would engage him, holding him in place. Meanwhile, the mages and ranged damage dealers would position themselves on the fortress walls, utilizing every available resource, including various mechanisms installed on the walls, to unleash their firepower. The key to success was how effectively the vanguard heroes could keep Iphian stationary. And while they did so, how much damage the ranged dealers on the walls could inflict within a limited timeframe. If the vanguard heroes failed to hold him properly, the ranged dealers on the walls would become exposed to Iphian and vulnerable. Conversely, if the ranged dealers didn’t deal enough damage, the vanguard heroes wouldn’t last long and would be wiped out. The battle would only proceed smoothly if all the heroes perfectly fulfilled their assigned roles. It was a classic MMORPG-style dragon raid.
‘There’s a particularly advantageous element in this battle.’
The dungeon mechanism installed on the walls—the ancient mana cannons.
In the game, they weren’t actually that great of a mechanism. As artifacts used by the Royal Guards of the Ancient Lake Kingdom, their power was decent, but they were difficult to aim. Even when using a character with high accuracy among our heroes as the gunner, the poor aiming performance of the cannons themselves made it difficult to hit the target.
‘Missed!’ ‘Almost!’ I had to watch those kinds of messages fill the screen and feel like I was going to throw up.
‘But now, for us?’
We have Damian, the self-proclaimed cheat character……!
Bang! Bang! Fwoosh! Fwoosh!
On the walls.
The reserve party rushed ahead, turning the cannons towards the inside of the fortress.
Then, a moment later, Damian pulled the triggers, and the mana cannons fired in succession.
The fired mana projectiles drew bizarre trajectories—and all of them struck Iphian’s head.
《What is this……?!》
Iphian let out a bewildered groan as he was bombarded by the relentless barrage.
Of course, since there was no time to overload the mana core like during the tutorial stage, they didn’t have the same power as those mana cannons. They were just decent artifacts used by the Lake Kingdom Royal Guards.
But they were all fully loaded—and even if it was small, the damage was definitely hitting Iphian.
《You insect-like things……!》
《I’ll take care of it.》
Iphian’s left head was annoyed, and the middle head glared and took control.
The middle head, while being bombarded, opened its mouth accurately towards the wall. It seemed like it was about to unleash a breath attack.
But we weren’t just standing around either. The vanguard heroes were already right up against Iphian.
I shouted.
“It’s a breath attack! Stop it—!”
“Leave it to me!”
Responding to my shout, Dusk Bringer, who was at the forefront, leaped into the air.
Swish!
The chainmail that had been covering Dusk Bringer’s body—[Owner of the High Tower]—transformed into a giant greatsword in her hand.
The greatsword, imbued with crimson mana, struck Iphian’s lower jaw from below.
Thwack-!
With tremendous heat, a sword strike imbued with the red dragon’s mana erupted.
Even with this attack, Iphian didn’t take much damage and finally unleashed his breath. However, Dusk Bringer’s powerful sword strike slightly lifted his jaw upwards—
Kwaaaang!
Forcing the trajectory of the breath towards the sky, protecting the heroes on the walls.
The black flame breath shot into the air, burning the empty space. It narrowly missed, but the heroes on the walls screamed and collapsed to the ground.
When the middle head’s breath missed, the left head, which had regained control, glared fiercely at Dusk Bringer.
《Don’t interfere, you half-dragon—!》
The left head opened its mouth wide. Without any mana reaction, only wind was being sucked into its mouth very quickly.
‘This pattern is!’
I quickly planted my flag on the ground and shouted.
“It’s Dragon Roar! Take cover—!”
The next moment.
Kiyaaaaaa-!
A deafening roar, with an enormous volume, filled the inside of the fortress.
It had already far surpassed the level of a simple shout. The wind pressure from his roar was so strong that it violently tore up the surrounding dirt floor.
……But, all of our vanguard heroes were safe.
They had put on magically treated earplugs beforehand, and they had hidden behind the mana wall I had created on the spot, deflecting the sound waves and wind pressure.
The mana wall crumbled after the Dragon Roar ended. The heroes stood up calmly from behind it.
《Th, these bastards, my roar……!》
《……How are they reacting so quickly?》
After their attacks were thwarted in succession, the two heads seemed slightly flustered.
Then, finally, the last head…… the right head, which had been dozing off, grumbled and took over.
《Honestly, you idiots…… I’ll take care of it.》
Kiiiiiing!
The right head, still with its eyes half-closed, stared at our vanguard heroes, and geometric magic patterns appeared in front of its eyes.
Of course, we were prepared for this pattern as well. I shouted.
“It’s magic! Dearmurdin, now’s the time!”
“Leave it to me!”
The mages who had been waiting on the walls all placed their hands on each other’s shoulders and prepared a joint spell.
Dearmurdin, Junior, Bodybag, Chain—the most seasoned mages on our front lines.
And King Poseidon, the chosen one of the race god, whose mana had become virtually infinite.
In addition to these five, there were two more mage parties. A total of 15 mages formed a line, resonating their mana with each other.
“The right head of the enemy beast is preparing a 9th-tier fire spell!”
“A 9th-tier spell from the start, how extravagant of you, Dragon Sir……!”
Junior identified the spell, and Dearmurdin laughed, his beard fluttering.
“To be able to directly confront the magic used by ancient legends—is there a more glorious moment for a mage!”
Fwoooosh!
A huge magic circle was instantly drawn in the air above the mages preparing the joint spell.
It was as if it were reflected in a mirror…… surprisingly similar to the magic circle used by Iphian’s right head.
Seeing this, the right head’s half-open eyes widened.
《What…… the same formula as me?! How……!》
“It’s a bit embarrassing to say it myself.”
Junior smiled mischievously.
“But I’m confident in copying what I see!”
《Don’t talk nonsense, how can a human possibly-!》
“Certainly, your magic is high-level, but you know. It’s so old-fashioned…… it’s not that difficult to copy and use on the spot!”
Iphian’s right head and our mage party completed their spells almost simultaneously.
“Don’t get so angry, Dragon Teacher. When I write a paper about this later…….”
Dearmurdin, with a face that looked like he was about to die of joy, extended his staff forward.
“I’ll write in small letters in the corner that I referenced you!”
Thwack-!
The huge pillars of fire shot out by the evil dragon and the humans collided in the air.
Iphian’s right head, unbelievably, unleashed magic with fierce anger and hatred, while our 15 mages gritted their teeth and followed with a joint magic calculation.
‘What happens when two spells of the same attribute collide?’
I looked up at the two pillars of fire clashing in the air, my lips trembling.
‘I’ve had plenty of experience with it in Stage 4!’
The one with the higher level, the stronger one, will swallow the other.
Then, what if…… the levels of both sides are equal?
‘Cancellation occurs!’
Clang-!
The two pillars of fire that had clashed in the air, after struggling against each other…… at some point, they scattered as if their existence had been a lie.
Iphian’s right head let out a hollow voice, as if he couldn’t believe it.
《This…… such an absurd thing……?!》
The magic attributes of the Black Dragon Legion are fire and wind.
And on our side, we have mages who correspond to both of those attributes.
The mages combine their power, match the level with a joint spell, and King Poseidon supplies the mana to cast it.
‘In the game, you could cancel it much more easily by just filling the number of mages…….’
In reality, more complex and difficult theories, principles, and implementation processes are needed.
‘The small and difficult things are for the practitioners to handle, and anyway!’
We completely canceled the magic!
“Ugh! We did it, but.”
“Oh, my head…….”
The mages, whose mana circuits had been collectively overloaded, staggered.
Iphian’s entire body stiffened as his mana circuit temporarily stopped. Both sides, who had clashed with magic, were stunned simultaneously.
During this time, our vanguard heroes clung to Iphian’s body and slashed with their swords, and Damian on the walls continuously fired mana cannons to accumulate damage.
‘It’s working properly!’
I nodded.
Iphian’s three heads take turns using patterns. Broadly, they are breath, Dragon Roar, and magic.
Among them, the middle head is specialized in breath. The left head is specialized in Dragon Roar. The right head is specialized in magic.
Among these, the pattern we need to actively respond to is magic.
‘Breath is just about dodging, and Dragon Roar is just about blocking…… but magic can be canceled, allowing us to exchange stuns.’
We could also respond with [Elemental Disassembly], but that would put too much burden on Junior.
On the other hand, the joint magic cancellation method was calculated to be sustainable throughout this battle, even though it was difficult for everyone.
To put it simply, it’s like this.
The other patterns are dodged or blocked, and only the magic pattern is canceled by the mages to exchange stuns.
And when Iphian is stunned and exposes an opening, the other heroes steadily accumulate damage.
That’s why the role of the mages is crucial in this battle, and why they are suffering both physically and mentally.
They exchange stuns through cancellation, and when they recover, the next magic pattern comes right away, and they cancel again, and get stunned again…… an infinite loop.
“I, I’m getting motion sickness…….”
“I’m starting to feel dizzy, Prince Ash! Is this going to be covered by worker’s compensation?!”
“Of course it is, so please keep going! You have to endure!”
The pattern sequence rotated once more, and the mages who had blocked the magic once again groaned.
But what can we do? The moment the mages collapse, this raid is over!
‘Of course, there’s a limit to how long we can endure, so…….’
We need to finish this as quickly as possible!
And fortunately, the other heroes were doing their jobs very diligently.
The vanguard heroes, who were right up against him, desperately began to hammer their weapons into Iphian’s body.
《How dare you touch my body!》
Iphian, roaring, tried to unleash a large attack on the melee heroes, but,
Bang! Thud! Kwaaang-!
At a ghostly timing, mana projectiles flew in with insane accuracy—landing headshots with absurd precision in succession.
The barrage of attacks shook his head repeatedly, and even the mighty evil dragon couldn’t withstand it and continued to be stunned. Thanks to this, the claws and tail that he swung wildly were easily dodged by our heroes, or were calmly received by Evangeline and Torkel.
“It’s light!”
“No, it’s not light at all…….”
Evangeline, who had received the claws, boasted, and Torkel, who had blocked the tail, groaned.
《These, annoying like gnats……!》
Eventually, Iphian, who was completely enraged, tried to target Damian, but this time, the vanguard heroes ran forward and plunged their attacks into his body.
“Kuilran!”
“I know, Sir Knight!”
As Lucas, who had rushed to the front, thrust a blade of light into the gap between the scales, Kuilran struck the same spot with his mace.
For the first time, a crack appeared in the scales that had been as hard as armor.
“……!”
The eyes of the vanguard heroes, who had found an opening, gleamed like jackals.
