Magic Learned in Vain – Episode 1 (1/502)
# 1
Intro
Legion leaned against the wall of the central cathedral.
A damp, cold energy traveled down his spine, freezing him to the core. It felt like he would freeze solid in the dead of winter. Even his breath crystallized in the air.
“Huff, huff.”
He was panting hard, the metallic tang of blood filling his mouth from the frantic run.
“Damn it.”
His face was bruised and swollen from the beating he’d taken. He was alive only because he hadn’t been caught completely off guard.
Who would have thought assassins would invade his bedroom and start throwing punches right away? If the assassins hadn’t been so eager to get to him, he would already be pushing up daisies [dead] instead of lying in his bedroom.
Even though he barely escaped the mansion, the danger wasn’t over.
They were still toying with Legion.
“Should we eat him?”
“Yeah, yeah, let’s tear him apart, starting with his legs…”
“No, grilling him would be a delicacy too.”
They chuckled, closing in, their presence a suffocating pressure.
Legion clenched his fist tightly.
He could guess who sent the assassins. Someone so greedy for the mere title of ‘Baron’ that he not only murdered his brother but also tried to kill his nephew.
His uncle, Julian, the Junior Baron.
He didn’t even want to call him uncle. Just a bastard. He wanted to find him and make him pay for killing his father.
But what could he do with this body?
Legion looked at his palm. It was just skin and bones. He was 18 years old, but his height barely exceeded 150 centimeters [approximately 4 feet 11 inches].
He was much smaller than his peers.
His weak body had hindered his growth since he was young. He hadn’t been able to learn mana [magical energy] because of his constant illnesses. Naturally, he hadn’t learned the secret arts of the Alexander family either.
The swordsmanship of the Alexander family, which had once dominated the continent, would become obsolete. Or maybe his uncle, that bastard, would unlock the sealed swordsmanship.
“Is this how it ends…”
Legion looked up at the sky, where countless galaxies were spread out. The sky was unimaginably beautiful.
“Father, Mother…”
Did they foresee that their brother, their brother-in-law, would do such a thing? Did they foresee that he would even harm their lives for the sake of the title?
They couldn’t have imagined it.
“Damn it…”
Legion clenched his fist so tightly that his nails dug into his palm.
Should he just bite his tongue?
It would be better than being a toy and dying miserably like this.
Yes, let’s die.
Let’s die and become a ghost to curse him. Uncle, you will never live happily.
Rattle, rattle-
Very faint footsteps could be heard.
The only things near the half-collapsed wall of the central cathedral were the wind and Legion.
It was only a matter of time before he was caught by them.
With this weak body, he couldn’t even resist them.
Legion took a deep breath and tried to bite his tongue.
At that moment-
A strange object appeared before his eyes. Judging by the buzzing sound, it seemed to be a fly. It flapped its wings quickly and stared intently at Legion.
“Is even a fly… ignoring me?”
The fly didn’t answer. Instead, it shot a red beam from its eyes.
-Scanning initiated.
The fly’s red light scanned Legion’s entire body like a net from left to right.
-Height 153 centimeters. Weight 46 kilograms [approximately 101 pounds]. No specific diseases, but very weak. Mana deficiency. Blood type B. Intelligence 99. Not particularly outstanding as expected. Currently impossible to learn magic. Body upgrade available.
“What is this sound?”
The fly was talking. And it seemed to be talking about him. Was he seeing and hearing things because he was about to die?
-Serum injection.
With those words, the fly jumped into Legion’s mouth.
“Cough.”
It felt like a needle had pierced his throat.
Legion grabbed his neck with both hands and coughed. Fortunately, the pain quickly subsided. At the same time, a strange vitality coursed through his body. It felt like his blood vessels were expanding. It was very strange.
Painful yet… a bizarre sense of expansion!
-Hey, can you hear me?
A strange voice was heard.
“Wh-what is it?”
Legion looked around. He heard a ghost’s voice. Was he already dead? He stuck out his tongue. He hadn’t even bitten his tongue yet. He also touched his throat where the fly had entered. He thought it was pierced, but it was fine.
-Don’t look elsewhere. Your life is hanging by a thread, so I’ll skip the explanation.
Skip what?
-There are things like that. First, look closely at the screen I’m displaying on your retina.
At the same time, letters appeared on his retina. It was as if someone had engraved letters between his retinas. Legion was so surprised that he stepped back.
Wh-what? Am I really dead?
-You’re not dead. Aptitude gene test is complete. So, you just need to decide on your career path.
Career path?
-That’s right. In simple terms, your job. Now, look at the screen carefully and choose. 1. Captain Korea, 2. Iron Boy, 3. Hulk, 4. Tar, 5. Dr. Schumacher, 6. Dinosaur Man, 7. Super Supreme, 8. Cat Girl, 9. Screw it. Random.
Captain Korea? Iron Boy? Hulk? What is this?
-I’ve extracted a list of the most suitable jobs by examining your genes. According to the data, I recommend number 1, Captain Korea. The probability of becoming a Grand Master of the continent in the future is 90 percent. I don’t recommend the others. Especially, never press number 5, Dr. Schumacher.
Who is Dr. Schumacher?
-He’s a magician. You have the aptitude. But you’re not smart. So, the probability of succeeding as a magician is similar to an ant marrying a human and having children.
What kind of nonsense is that?
-It’s not nonsense. You won’t understand now because there’s no time. The assassins trying to kill you will arrive in 5 seconds. Although they are pathetic assassins with the skill of a pebble, you can’t beat them. So, hurry up and choose a job. Quickly press number 1. Even if you’re not smart, there’s still a chance your body will become strong. Don’t you want to become a Grand Master?
I want to.
-Then press it quickly.
Can I trust you?
-You should trust me more than your wife.
What are you basing that on?
-Just trust me. I’ll tell you everything later. Arriving in 1 second. I lost a lot of energy due to the time warp. So, you can’t change jobs. You can’t delete it either. Just press number 1.
I don’t know what it is. But I agree that there’s no time.
Legion brought his finger to the letters in front of him. He pressed number 1 as the fly, or whatever it was, told him to. No, he was about to press it.
“I caught you, you bastard!”
Suddenly, an assassin appeared from above the wall and kicked Legion’s shoulder.
Legion’s finger slipped. His finger pressed number 5, Dr. Schumacher.
Beep-
You have been transferred to a magician, the letters appeared on his retina.
Suddenly, the voice in his head went crazy and shouted.
-Ah! I’m screwed. You couldn’t even press it properly. I clearly told you that you can’t be a magician with your brain!
