Magic is Learned in Vain – Episode 310
Golem War (1)
Drayger arrived at the territory.
It was a complete backwater, barely a territory at all. There wasn’t even a proper village. All that existed was a newly built two-story building that served as both a restaurant and an inn for travelers.
It was the perfect spot to be preyed upon by bandits.
If it weren’t for it being Legion’s territory, no one would ever do business in such a place.
But because it was the safe Legion territory, it was possible to do business targeting merchants passing through such remote areas.
Of course, there were no monster attacks either.
“Hmm. Is this it?”
He had passed this way a few times, but this was the first time he’d seen the building.
Well, the lord’s territory changed every time you woke up. At the entrance to the territory, surrounded by walls, dozens or even hundreds of settlers stood in long lines every day.
All of them wanted to settle in Alexander’s territory.
How was he going to handle all those people?
“Master, if you accept all those people, you might go bankrupt. The territory seems to be getting too big.”
“It’s fine. They’re people who had no way to make a living. People who couldn’t even sleep properly every night, fearing attacks from monsters or wild animals. At least here, they can stretch their legs and sleep soundly.”
“Doing good is fine, but why does the master have to do it? Even the king doesn’t do it.”
“Are the king and I the same person?”
“No.”
“That’s right. If I don’t do it just because the king doesn’t, how ridiculous is that? Let’s just say I do it because it makes me feel good. If we work hard, we won’t go bankrupt. The mines are constantly expanding, and Wyvern World will do well too.”
“Tch, working your bones out just to benefit someone else.”
Drayger chuckled.
The master was truly unpredictable. He could seem like the worst villain in the world, but also like the biggest pushover. He was endlessly generous to people, but those involved in bad things never escaped utter ruin.
Drayger thought he was a truly strange human.
Even though they had a contract, he was already an 8-star warrior!
If he decided to leave, there was nothing stopping him. Yet, he stayed by the master’s side because-
He liked Legion.
“Well, interesting things keep happening, too.”
Drayger grinned menacingly and entered the restaurant. It was a well-decorated restaurant for a building in such a remote location. Business seemed to be doing quite well.
Even though it was well past lunchtime, more than half of the tables were occupied.
“Welcome.”
A server approached Drayger, bowed deeply, and then jumped back in surprise, landing on his rear.
“Why?”
“Ah, no. I’m sorry.”
The server had almost screamed, thinking it was an attack.
He barely managed to hold back the scream. He looked around at the other servers. They, too, looked tense as they looked at Drayger’s face.
The server looked behind Drayger.
He wondered if there were any accomplices. Fortunately, he didn’t see any.
So, was he a lone wolf?
Although young, the server was a seasoned veteran who had been through thick and thin.
The man’s massive build, the braids in his hair, the axe on his back.
He looked like a mercenary at first glance, but he wasn’t. *I’d* bet my hand on it. This man is a robber.
So, the young server led Drayger to a secluded spot. And he winked at the servers who used their strength.
*If I fall back, everyone attack together.*
Drayger snorted as he looked at the young server.
*Trying to play games in front of a Grand Master. He was confident that he could blow this entire building away with one blow.*
Of course, he wouldn’t do that.
Whether they were good people or bad guys, there wasn’t much reason to do so.
“What would you like to order?”
The server asked cautiously, placing the menu down, trying his best not to show any tension.
“Ah, more than that, let me ask you something. Do you know Mazel?”
“Want to get hit?”
“No, Mazel. What’s wrong with you? You know.”
“Ah, no, I don’t know. What are you talking about?”
The young server was clearly flustered.
“Mazel had a message to deliver. Go get the boss.”
“Yes?”
“Didn’t you hear? Mazel has a message. Should I tell you?”
“Ah, no. Please, wait a moment.”
The young server hurried away.
Drayger chuckled as he watched the server’s retreating figure. It was like a puppy trying to imitate a wolf.
Soon after-
Drayger and Lilac faced each other.
“Oh, my, who is this? Acacia?”
“It’s Lilac!”
* * *
The Dusselruf Mountains,
To be exact, two bishops were dispatched to Count Legion’s territory.
In fact, it was an excessive force to send to such a remote place.
But the Archbishop trusted Lilac and sent two bishops.
Lilac’s partner was Mazel, the embodiment of violence and abuse of power.
Mazel, with his competence and unparalleled violence to carry out operations independently! Lilac thought that with him, she could overturn this territory at any time.
Mazel was that kind of man.
A man with a brain and tongue like a snake.
A formidable figure who even used 6-circle black magic!
If he assisted her – first, she thought she could easily seize the legacy of ‘Monmeogeodo’ [likely a reference to a powerful artifact or magical knowledge], and second, she thought she could retrieve the sealed body of the lost Black Dragon.
If the Stone Head Church infiltrated this place for those two reasons, Lilac had another hidden purpose.
To recover the power of the Cyclops.
She intended to absorb it and reach the 8th circle in one fell swoop. If she reached the 8th circle, she could compete with the Archbishop.
She would be the one to rule the world.
She had no intention of handing it over to the Archbishop.
And while she was at it, she would deal with Legion, who had given her trouble.
Although the damage was more severe than expected, the operation was proceeding sequentially.
Legion would be trapped in the snare of the territory’s people and would never be able to escape.
However, something unexpected happened.
She never imagined that she would meet Drayger here. It wasn’t a chance encounter either.
Drayger had come looking for her.
“How did he know about this place?”
Lilac swallowed hard.
Her eyes fixed on Drayger as she scanned her surroundings. *Where the needle goes, the thread follows* [meaning where one thing leads, another will follow]. She thought Legion must be somewhere nearby.
Legion was a Count.
Even if he was a newly promoted Count, he had basic military strength.
At least dozens of knights would be stationed nearby.
But she didn’t feel any hostile energy from the surroundings.
“Mazel told me.”
“Mazel?”
“Yeah.”
“Where is he?”
“He went to see his mother.”
“…What nonsense!”
“It’s true. I’m telling you, he went to see his mother.”
“What nonsense are you talking about! Where is Mazel’s mother! She’s been dead for ages! Ah!”
Only then did Lilac realize what Drayger was saying. Her beautiful brow furrowed fiercely.
“You, of all people, defeated Mazel?”
In Lilac’s judgment, Drayger was at a similar level to Mazel. He was quite strong, having defeated the resurrected Cyclops.
But that was only because the Cyclops’ resurrection was not complete. If he had absorbed the power of the Cyclops and the demon beasts of the Demon Realm without her spell, he would not have been able to withstand the power and would have gone mad.
Moreover, Mazel was always accompanied by about twenty escorting mages and knights.
It was hard to believe that there was anyone who could defeat them all.
“Well, do I have to make you understand?”
“No, there’s no need. Such a thing is impossible! Even if you did, you must have used some despicable trick.”
“Well, believe what you want. Shouldn’t we end our bad blood now?”
Drayger slowly rose from his seat.
As his massive 2-meter frame stood up, the space around the table felt cramped.
Even as she looked at Drayger, Lilac was not at all intimidated.
“Are you alone?”
“Yeah, I’m single.”
“……”
Lilac’s eyes twitched.
It was a conversation she had heard somewhere, but she couldn’t quite remember.
Drayger felt the same way. It was really funny when someone else did it, but it wasn’t very funny when he did it.
“Do you want to fight me?”
“Fight? Let’s just call it education. Stop believing in pseudo-religions.”
“Stop talking nonsense. Follow me.”
Lilac turned her back and walked away.
She seemed confident that Drayger wouldn’t attack her from behind.
Drayger twisted his lips.
*What would the master have done? I guarantee that woman would have died here. The moment she turned her back, he would have kicked her.*
And then stomped on her.
That woman should be grateful to him.
He didn’t do such sneaky things like the master.
“Okay. Let’s go.”
Drayger whistled and followed Lilac.
* * *
Of course.
Drayger smiled.
He expected that woman to use dirty tricks. Still, he followed Lilac. He was confident that he could overcome whatever she did.
“Clap, clap, clap.”
Drayger clapped.
“What? That reaction? Aren’t you scared?”
“Let’s just say I’m scared. By the way, the Stone Head Church is amazing. When did they build such a dungeon here?”
“There’s a way.”
This was the basement of the restaurant.
In the basement of the restaurant, there was a huge cavity. It was large enough to accommodate at least hundreds of people at the same time.
And there, about 100 humanoid golems, each about 2 meters tall, were in place.
He couldn’t feel the power of magic, so he didn’t really get a sense of how great they were.
Probably-
They’re strong.
So what?
“So, what? You want me to fight these dolls?”
“Fight?”
Lilac scoffed. She said.
“Change of plans.”
“How?”
“Thanks to you coming here on your own, I don’t have to use my head in a complicated way. I should thank Mazel for going to see his mother first.”
“So, what are you going to do?”
“I’m going to extract your heart.”
“Why my heart?”
“Your heart contains the power of the Cyclops and the demon beast Gracia of the Demon Realm. That’s mine, so I have to retrieve it. And……”
“And?”
“I’m going to destroy Legion’s territory. I won’t leave a single one alive.”
“With these dolls?”
“They’re not ordinary dolls. They’re the last work left by the 8-circle golem summoner Monmeogeodo. Now, golems! Tear out the heart of that beggar-looking bastard!”
With Lilac’s command, the golems came to life.
Their eyes shone menacingly as they lunged at Drayger.
-Kuaaaaaa!
Drayger grabbed the neck of the golem that approached closest. He grabbed it so naturally that it seemed like the golem had deliberately let him grab it.
He tightened his grip.
Crack!
The sound rang out as the upper part of the golem’s neck shattered and scattered on the floor.
“Escape will be impossible, so don’t waste your energy.”
Drayger’s eyes also began to turn more and more menacing.
The power of the Archduke of Darkness, beyond imagination, instantly swallowed the underground cavity.
