The Vault of the Demon God – Episode 48
Chapter 48
The Hungry Ogre
This was a special monster the system implemented to prevent the third chapter of the tutorial from dragging on for too long.
Even though a battle was raging, some players would gradually regain their senses and start avoiding combat.
‘Someone else will take down the players for me.’
That was their thinking.
Rumor had it that at one point, over 90% of the players had made a silent agreement not to fight.
What solved that problem was this thing: the Hungry Ogre.
It would appear on the field and attack hidden players, forcibly reducing their numbers.
Naturally, this monster was so powerful that even an entire clan would have difficulty facing it.
‘The reward is substantial, too.’
The amount of experience and contribution points you could get from defeating it was considerable.
Seun was now attempting to face such a monster alone.
“I’ll come with you! It’s too dangerous to go alone. If other players group up and attack like they did just now…”
“Even if they come in groups, I can handle them. And I’m confident I can escape if things get too difficult.”
“Still!”
“We’ve dealt with the big issue, but another clan might attack. If you’re not here, who will command the others?”
“…Hmph. I understand.”
Yoo Seo-ah nodded, as if she couldn’t argue further.
In truth, Seun could act alone *because* it was him; taking anyone else would likely be a burden.
More than the clan’s needs, it was the Hungry Ogre’s sheer power that made him hesitate to bring others.
Its power was that formidable.
“I’m okay, right?”
“Hmm…”
After Yoo Seo-ah stepped back, Kang Han-cheol appeared, blocking the sunlight with his characteristically massive frame.
Normally, he wouldn’t ask why and would remain quiet no matter what Seun did, but today, for some reason, he wanted to follow Seun.
‘Kang Han-cheol, huh…’
This made Seun hesitate even more.
Should he take Kang Han-cheol with him to hunt the Hungry Ogre?
The hesitation didn’t last long, and he concluded:
“Alright.”
Approval.
Kang Han-cheol didn’t seem like he would hinder the hunt for the Hungry Ogre.
In fact, his presence might even be beneficial.
No matter how skilled Seun was, the Hungry Ogre was designed to be faced by at least a clan.
Kang Han-cheol’s absence would weaken the stronghold’s defenses, but Seun thought those remaining at the stronghold could fend off attacks from other players.
Yoo Seo-ah expressed her regret, but as the clan’s commander, she couldn’t leave.
“Jeong-pil.”
“Yes, hyung-nim [term of respect]! Hop on anytime!”
“Okay.”
Thanks to the watchtower, there was no need for scouting for the time being, so he borrowed Park Jeong-pil’s Red Wolf mount.
However, Kang Han-cheol’s physique was so enormous that it was difficult to ride together, so they had to bring the boar that pulled the wagon.
Seeing Kang Han-cheol on the boar, Seun thought it would have been quite a sight if he had been riding a wolf.
“Then, I’ll be back.”
“Come back safely.”
“It won’t take too long.”
Thud!
The Red Wolf powerfully kicked off the ground.
Behind them, the skeleton pulling Kang Han-cheol desperately followed.
It seemed the boar skeleton was slower than the wolf skeleton, so it had to match its speed.
Moreover, it was carrying Kang Han-cheol, who was not only huge but also carried heavy equipment.
Still, it was incomparably faster than an ordinary person running, so there was no reason to complain.
Rather, Seun had the leisure to enjoy the cool breeze and the rapidly passing scenery.
“The Hungry Ogre monster. Is it strong?”
“Strong, very strong. Even you would have difficulty fighting it with just brute strength.”
“I look forward to it.”
Kang Han-cheol’s eyes were burning with fighting spirit.
Come to think of it, he hadn’t had a proper fight since the last wave of the first tutorial.
At best, the most challenging battle was against the monsters that appeared after listening to Pan’s performance.
His preference was for facing strong monsters rather than small fry. It seemed he had insisted on following Seun because of that.
“Kill!”
“Sa, save me! Ugh!”
“Damn it, I was happy to see people! This is too much!”
While riding to find the Hungry Ogre, shouts of battle and screams echoed from all directions.
Yoo Seo-ah would have been anxious seeing their plight, but Kang Han-cheol merely watched them silently.
“But where do we find that monster?”
“Don’t worry. There aren’t just one or two Hungry Ogres, and if we get close enough, you’ll know its location even if you don’t want to.”
“What does that…”
The field where the third tutorial was taking place was as vast as the number of players. So, there was no way only one monster would be summoned inside.
As Seun remembered, there were at least five.
His memories from before the regression were a mess of confusion and fear, so he couldn’t be sure, but there would likely be more than ten summoned.
Just as Kang Han-cheol was tilting his head at Seun’s answer.
Thud!!
“Kyaaak!”
Along with a sharp scream, a roar like a mountain collapsing was heard.
The sound was so loud that not only Seun, whose hearing was enhanced by ‘Cobalt’s Lop-eared’ [a skill or item], but also Kang Han-cheol frowned and turned his head towards the source.
“See?”
“Indeed.”
Thud!
At Seun’s will, the Red Wolf abruptly changed direction.
The closer they got, the louder the screams became, and a vibration that seemed to shake the ground could be felt.
Turning his head, Seun saw Kang Han-cheol staring intently at the source of the noise, his fist clenched so tightly that the skeleton’s ribs seemed to be in danger.
Was he nervous?
No.
Seun, who had become quite close to Kang Han-cheol, could easily discern the emotion he was feeling.
‘Anticipation.’
He was anticipating an enemy stronger than himself.
It was an emotion that ignored human survival instincts, but it was also the driving force that allowed Kang Han-cheol to become stronger.
Before long, the Hungry Ogre revealed itself.
“Kuaaaa!”
“Is that the one?”
“Yeah. Do you like it?”
“It’s worth fighting.”
-The constellation, ‘Old Man Riding an Alligator,’ strokes the alligator’s skin, saying it’s a good opportunity to prove his contractor’s strength.
A green monster over 4 meters tall.
Exaggerated muscles were visible beneath its skin, with massive blood vessels writhing over them.
Its eyes were bloodshot, and seeing the red stain below its chin, it seemed to have already massacred many players.
The players around it had lost the courage to face the Hungry Ogre and were desperately running away with their backs turned.
However.
“Are there supposed to be two?”
“No. It seems their locations happened to overlap.”
There were two Hungry Ogres at the location they arrived at.
No wonder the players couldn’t do anything and had to run away.
“Good. Let’s each take one.”
“Understood.”
Seun and Kang Han-cheol split up, heading in different directions.
Others wouldn’t have been able to do this, but Seun wasn’t worried about Kang Han-cheol.
It was a decision made possible because he knew Kang Han-cheol’s strength better than anyone else, having sparred with him almost daily.
‘Even if he can’t win, he won’t lose.’
Believing that, Seun ran towards the ogre wielding thick wooden pillars in both hands a little further back.
The force was so powerful that the sound of the wind echoed in his ears every time it swung the wooden pillars.
“Hung…gry!”
-The constellation, ‘Hungry Prince,’ drools over the luscious sinews, saying he feels the same way.
As the distance closed, the ogre quickly noticed Seun’s presence.
There was a way to approach without being detected using stealth, but he didn’t want to waste time since he had to watch Kang Han-cheol’s fight.
“Soft… human!”
-The constellation, ‘Hungry Prince,’ chimes in, “Chewy… ogre!” taking the ogre’s words.
Whoosh!
The ogre swung the wooden pillar without hesitation.
In response, Seun jumped up as naturally as a leaf blown by the wind, and the Red Wolf quickly ducked its head and moved out of the way.
Next, Seun landed on top of the ogre’s wooden pillar.
The ogre panicked and tried to swing the wooden pillar in its other hand, but Seun’s body was already rapidly moving forward.
Holding the weapon Go Chang-seok had made, the ‘Fang Dagger,’ in reverse grip.
-The Vault of Greed has been opened.
[ Camille’s Dagger Art ]
– The dagger art of Camille, the mercenary king said to be one of only five in the world. It is a swordsmanship she devised to deal with large monsters that are not easily attacked, as she usually uses dual swords.
It wasn’t ordinary dagger art. It was a dagger art designed to deal with large monsters, just like the ogre Seun was facing now.
It was truly the most suitable skill for Seun at this moment.
Swish-
A clean cutting sound, completely different from when swinging a longsword, was heard.
The wound wasn’t deep either.
A faint line appeared near the ogre’s wrist, and the ogre seemed to be mocking Seun’s attack, as if the pain wasn’t significant.
However, the result was by no means light.
Thud!
“Kuaaa? My hand, I can’t feel any strength…”
The ogre released the wooden pillar it was tightly gripping, letting it fall.
No, it didn’t let it fall. Its tendons were cut, causing it to lose strength and drop the wooden pillar.
However, Seun’s attack wasn’t over.
It was closer to the beginning.
Swish, scrape!
Seun quickly dashed up the ogre’s arm.
Even during that time, the Fang Dagger in his hand was relentlessly swung, creating numerous bloodlines.
Splat!
Even though the wounds didn’t seem deep, the dagger thoroughly targeted the ogre’s tendons and blood vessels, and a fountain of the monster’s unique green blood gushed from the ogre’s arm.
Camille’s Dagger Art.
Because it was difficult to attack vital points when the enemy’s body was large, this was an attack method that aimed to dry out the opponent by targeting tendons and blood vessels.
Because of this, she was said to be called ‘Blood Demon’ in the mercenary world.
Smirk.
Seun smiled briefly.
To be able to acquire the skills and memories that someone would have to train for decades just by using a treasure once.
It was a truly fraudulent power that lightly crushed common sense.
Flap, flap, flap!
The ogre desperately tried to shake its arm, but the more it did, the more brutally the blood wind scattered, without dislodging Seun.
In an instant, one arm became crippled.
The moment Seun arrived near the ogre’s neck.
Slice!
The ogre’s carotid arteries on both sides of its neck were severed, and a fountain of blood soared high into the sky.
No matter how strong the ogre was, it couldn’t survive without blood circulating, unless it was a troll.
The ogre desperately raised its arm to block the wound, but the other arm was already crippled.
It couldn’t block two carotid arteries with one hand.
The moment the blood that had soared high into the sky stopped gliding and fell like a shower.
Thud!
The Hungry Ogre’s pupils lost their light and it collapsed on the spot.
-You have defeated the quest monster, ‘Hungry Ogre.’
-Your level has increased.
-Personal contribution points increase by 10,000 points.
-Personal contribution points increase by an additional 5,000 points for defeating the quest monster alone.
-You have acquired ‘Ogre Tendon.’
Experience enough to raise a level at once, and a total of 15,000 contribution points including additional contribution points.
A smile naturally appeared on Seun’s face.
-The constellation, ‘Hungry Prince,’ waits with its mouth open for food.
Seun, who was using the Authority of Gluttony at Beelzebub’s urging, turned his head.
‘Is he doing well?’
Towards Kang Han-cheol, who was hunting the Hungry Ogre alone.
