“We won! We won! We really won!”
Logan was the loudest and happiest of them all.
He felt like he had lived through something terrible again, but this time he survived! He jumped up and down, cheering loudly. He was so happy he looked like he might fly away.
But then, he noticed his friends. They were very tired and just looked at him. Their eyes showed they felt a little strange.
One of his friends said, “Young Master, you have so much energy! It looks like you could have won even if we just fought like usual.”
“Ah… well, yes! Of course! We were going to win this war anyway!” Logan said quickly.
Everyone smiled, but it was a funny smile. They knew he was talking nonsense. This made it feel like the war was really over.
Heinkel asked, “But Young Master, did you know this would happen?”
Everyone looked at Logan when Heinkel said this.
Did he know the king would die?
This was a dangerous question. People might think Logan planned it. Logan quickly shook his head.
“No, no, not at all. It’s just….”
Logan looked around at everyone. He sighed loudly and smiled a little, but it was not a happy smile.
“My plan didn’t work,” Logan said. “We were just lucky. I am sorry to everyone.”
“Ah….”
Heinkel looked surprised. Soon, many other people looked surprised too.
Logan said he was honest, but maybe he wasn’t completely. People had different reactions.
Some people who liked Logan thought:
– “Well, he is just a person.”
– “Anyone can make mistakes.”
– “We still won, so it’s okay.”
These people were happy for Logan.
Others thought:
– “It’s good that it worked out.”
– “We almost failed because of him.”
Some people started to think Logan was not so good.
Logan knew some people would think badly of him. He smiled anyway.
‘It’s much better if people just think I made a mistake, not that I killed the king.’ Logan thought.
If the king had died on the same day as before, and everything went as planned, Logan could have just said his plan was not needed.
But things were late by a few days. It was lucky that things were only this bad, with just these rumors.
But some people did not believe Logan.
“Did you really not know?” his father asked.
“Sorry?” Logan said, not sure he heard right.
“Are you saying you didn’t plan this to make the king die?” his father asked again.
His father asked this suddenly. Most soldiers had gone to rest, and only a few guards were left.
Logan knew he had to answer this question carefully. He could not ignore it.
“…That’s right,” Logan said.
“Are you involved in this at all?” his father asked.
His father’s face became serious and hard when Logan answered.
This was a very important question. They had to stop these bad thoughts right away.
“No! Absolutely not! I just heard some secret bad news from my teacher. I was thinking about what to do with that news.”
“Hmm… Sword Saint Kakka, again…” his father said, sounding a little annoyed.
Logan thought to himself, ‘Sorry, Teacher, I used your name again.’
But this time, his father did not stop there.
“Still, you were too risky. If things had been a little different, we could have lost everything. You know that, right?”
“…Yes. I know I made a mistake,” Logan said.
“Yes, young people make mistakes. Luckily, it turned out okay this time. But next time, think more carefully. And talk to me first,” his father said.
“Yes, I understand,” Logan said.
“Good. That’s all I wanted to say.”
Father and son smiled at each other. But when Logan turned away, his smile was not real.
He knew his father was serious.
Even if it was a good chance, Logan had taken a big risk by only using what he knew from before.
Things had already changed a lot because of him. He had been too sure of himself. He felt bad about this.
‘The future will change even more now,’ Logan thought. ‘From now on, I should only use what I know from before as a guide. I must never take such a big chance again.’
Logan made this promise to himself very strongly.
News came that the king had died. All important people were ordered to go to the capital city.
So, Patrick, who was important, had to go to the capital right away.
But the castle walls were broken. He could not leave the land like this.
“You are just a small lord anyway,” Logan said. “No one will care if you are a little late for the funeral. We are not a powerful group.”
Logan’s words were a little rude, but they were true.
Logan, Patrick, and their helpers decided to fix the most important things after the war first.
They quickly gathered the bodies of the dead soldiers and sent them back to town with the hurt soldiers.
They asked the town for food. Then, the soldiers who were still able to work started to rebuild the walls of Tomodo Castle.
They could not ask the people from nearby villages to help yet. The villagers were still very scared from the war and had not left their houses.
So, the first people asked to help were the mages from the Golem Tower. They were very, very tired.
“Master, I think I am going to die,” Grick said. He looked very pale and tired.
Even though he used magic stones to control the golems, he still used his own magic too.
Grick was not a very strong mage. He had used up all his magic power already.
Now, he was not only controlling golems, but also using extra magic to help. Grick was at his limit.
The last few days were the hardest time in his life as a mage.
Before the war, he had started by digging tunnels. He had worked all night to dig ditches and connect water paths.
He had been so tired he collapsed. Then, for five days, he had been thinking very hard to make a magic circle to break the walls with the magic scroll.
Just when he thought he could finally rest for one day, he was told to build the walls again!
“If you wanted us to rebuild it, why did you make us break it in the first place!” Grick complained.
Grick was a mage, but he was not stupid. He was just saying how unfair he felt.
“You said I could practice magic in peace if I left the Magic Tower! What is this! I am even busier now!”
Clayton had been trying to ignore Grick’s complaining. But when he heard this, he had to turn around.
He had to calm down his student. But then—
“If I had used this time to train, I would be a much better mage by now! This is a terrible life… Huh? Huh?”
“Huh?” Clayton said, confused by what Grick was looking at.
A low hum, ‘Uung,’ vibrated from the golem.
Grik sent mana to the golem. At the same time, he was using Earth Wall magic to build the castle wall. His heart beat fast with the effort, thumping with mana.
Then, something amazing happened. ‘Uuung,’ the golem vibrated again, louder this time. ‘Creak, creak, creak!’ The sound of stone grinding against stone filled the air.
Suddenly, Grik felt a surge of power inside him, like a new source of energy was opening up. At the same moment, the golem began to pull in earth from all around it. It grew bigger and taller right before their eyes.
Now, Grik’s golem was much bigger than Clayton’s golems. It was a full meter taller than Clayton’s five-meter creations. Clayton’s golems were made carefully, using mana spread out evenly, but Grik’s was just… bigger.
Everything happened so fast. Grik just stared at his golem, his mouth open in surprise. He was completely confused.
“‘My circle… it got bigger?’ Grik mumbled, touching his chest. Then he laughed, a confused, happy sound. ‘What in the world is going on?'”
Wizards were supposed to get stronger by studying and learning secrets. But Grik’s power grew while he was just complaining about hard work! It was the opposite of what should happen.
Grik was completely shocked.
But Clayton, his teacher, had been watching closely. Clayton’s eyes suddenly shone with excitement. He had seen something important.
“Hoo?”
Clayton seemed to understand something important. He quickly looked at his other students.
The disciples were looking at their senior, Grik, with eyes mixed with surprise and envy.
Clayton could see it. Enan, the second student, and Truth, the third, were also getting stronger. He could sense their mana growing, just like Grik’s.
Clayton had taught these students from the very beginning, since they first learned to control mana. He could see changes in them that they couldn’t even feel themselves.
His disciples were growing much faster than he had expected.
‘Maybe I was wrong about something…’
Suddenly, Clayton had a new idea. He realized something he hadn’t understood before.
“Do you see now!? Push yourselves! Use your magic as much as you can! This hard work, using magic until you are exhausted – this is how you become stronger! Everyone, work harder! Use your magic to the limit!”
Without even realizing it, Clayton was urging his students on, pushing them harder than ever.
The work on the Tomodo Castle walls continued. No one realized it yet, but this project would change the Golem School forever. It would lead them down a new path – the path of builders and engineers, using magic to create and construct.
‘It’s really over,’ Eileen thought, her eyes still unfocused. She stared at the castle walls, now tall and strong, reaching up to the sky.
But what she was actually seeing was not the scene in front of her, but the desperate battles of the past few days.
It was her first real battle, her first war, as a knight.
It was also the first time she had killed someone, and the first time she had almost died.
Almost dying was definitely the strongest feeling of all.
How many times had she felt the fear that she might actually die in this war?
She had imagined being a knight would be glorious. She would bravely face danger, become stronger, and make a name for herself that everyone would remember. But that dream was completely broken now.
‘What dream was I really dreaming?’
Did I really want to become a knight, or was it just stubbornness?
The way she used to think, what she thought was bravery and her life’s purpose, now felt empty and meaningless.
“‘Can I even keep doing this?’ she wondered. The more she thought about the battle, the less confident she felt. Her courage was shrinking.”
I should have done this then, why did I do that?
I should have gone the other way the next time, why did I repeat the same mistake?
‘Pathetic.’
She was lost in her own thoughts, sinking deeper and deeper into sadness. Then, she heard a familiar voice, pulling her back to reality.
“Eileen. How are you feeling…?”
“Lord Logan!”
“Oh… Am I that welcome? I thought I’d get cursed at.”
“Huh? What? Why would I?”
“Weren’t you terrified? You almost died so many times in your first fight.”
“‘Well,’ Eileen said, trying to sound strong, ‘that’s just part of being a knight, isn’t it?'”
She answered confidently, not wanting to back down, but her fingertips trembled without her knowing.
‘Surely he didn’t see.’
Her pride wouldn’t let her look weak. It forced her to act confident, even though she felt like her courage was disappearing.
She turned her trembling hands behind her back, raised her chin, and straightened her nose.
“‘If you’re scared of fighting, you can’t be a knight,’ she said firmly. *I am Eileen Floyd,* she thought to herself, *a knight who will be famous in the Grandia Kingdom.*”
She repeated her vows in her mind like a spell, boosting her confidence.
Fortunately, her bluff seemed to work.
“Really, that’s incredible,” Logan said. “In my first battle, all I managed to do was not run away.”
“Huh? What are you saying…? Oh, you’re not making fun of me…?”
“It’s true. The people around me don’t know it now, but that’s what my first real battle was like. It was the first time I saw someone trying to kill me, and I didn’t even know why I had to kill someone I had never met before. I just froze.”
Logan smiled bitterly as he recalled his first battle as a mercenary in his previous life.
“So, I was really worried about you. But you were amazing in the battle. The other knights are talking about how brave you were.”
“R-really?”
“Yes. You showed everyone that you weren’t just talking when you said you wanted to be a knight. You really meant it. And I also wanted to thank you for saving me from Aslan. I should have said thank you sooner.”
“Oh, no. It was because you first…”
“Lady, no, Eileen ‘Knight’. I look forward to working with you.”
Feeling good about yourself isn’t just about what you think. When someone else believes in you, it can give you real confidence. Eileen was just happy that Logan saw her as a true knight, someone he could work with.
“Of course!”
The dark thoughts that had filled Eileen’s face just a moment ago were nowhere to be seen on her brightly smiling face.
The Tomodo Castle walls were going up incredibly fast. The wizards from the Golem Magic Tower were working magic. Everyone who watched was amazed at how quickly the walls were being built.
Supplies, including food, were also starting to come in from the town.
“We need to make sure these walls are strong,” one of the McLaine leaders said. “Bifrost might try to attack again.”
“Yes, sir! We will defend it well!” someone replied.
The McLaine leaders smiled, looking at the castle taking shape. This new land was now theirs. But deep down, they were still worried. They couldn’t get rid of a nagging fear.
‘Will Bifrost just let us rebuild? Will they attack again once their leader is ready?’ This question was in everyone’s mind, but no one dared to say it out loud. It worried them constantly.
“I will go to the capital with my father,” Logan announced. He spoke with complete confidence. “I know there’s a way to solve this.” Logan had become the most important person in McLaine now, and everyone listened to him.
