“The Wolf Banner! It’s the Wolves!” someone shouted.
“Wolves? Kai-Run?!” another voice yelled back, full of worry.
Logan’s father, Padrick, was grinding his teeth, his face red with anger. But Logan barely noticed. He was too focused on something else.
Logan could see much further than any normal soldier. His sharp eyes picked out strange shapes among the enemy ranks. Something was not right.
He recognized the objects held by each of the enemy soldiers, numbering over four thousand.
Moreover, the enemy knights were positioned at the rear, which was unusual for battles at this time.
Their formation was strange. Instead of knights at the front, they were at the back. It was the opposite of what Logan expected.
This was Maclane’s special formation, designed to make one weapon as powerful as possible.
‘Repeating crossbows?!’ Logan thought.
Logan’s eyes widened. Repeating crossbows? He hadn’t expected that. But he quickly took a deep breath and focused. *No time to panic.*
‘I knew the crossbows would surface eventually,’ Logan thought.
Logan glanced to the side.
Bipros had taken many crossbows from Tomodo Castle.
Logan thought Bipros would use crossbows first, if they started to become common.
‘No, it was Reina… Yes, it started then,’ he realized.
Now that he thought about it, the Wolves had been interested in repeating crossbows from the moment they started selling Imporic.
Logan quickly pushed away the thought of the silver-haired beauty and grabbed the crossbow he had. It was a special weapon he called the Bomb Bow. It was a magical weapon, designed to be used with repeating crossbows and filled with a powerful magic called Liberatio.
“Logan?” Padrick asked, surprised to see Logan using a weapon he was supposed to keep hidden until the right moment.
But Logan ignored his father’s surprise.
“The enemy has repeating crossbows,” Logan stated.
“What?!” Padrick exclaimed.
“We need to destroy them with the first attack,” Logan said firmly.
With those words, Logan signaled to Heinckel and gathered the men who had Bomb Bows around him.
There were only eighteen knights, including his father, Heinckel, and himself.
These were excellent soldiers from the crossbow cavalry, including Ronian, Viktor, and Eilen, who were training to be knights. They had been given the weapons because they learned to use Force quickly and were likely to become knights soon. They were told not to die easily.
Logan called all twelve of these soldiers.
Even if he kept the command unit’s Bomb Bows as backup, he would have to use the weapons he had given to these men.
‘There’s no choice. We can’t fail here. We have to crush them completely,’ Logan thought.
Of course, it was unlikely that a fake weapon would be better than the real one.
But this was not the time to find out.
“When I give the signal, fire the Bomb Bows at the enemy in a straight line,” Logan ordered.
“Sir?” one of the soldiers asked.
“The enemy soldiers are carrying what look like repeating crossbows,” Logan explained.
Normally, it would be hard to see that far, even with very good eyesight.
But no one doubted Logan’s words.
The men drew their crossbows at the same time. The crossbows glowed faintly with a blue light as they aimed at the enemy.
When the enemy got within about 500 meters, Logan shouted:
“Fire!”
With that simple command, twenty-four blue quarrels shot across the sky from the hands of twelve soldiers, one after another.
The enemy was so far away that only Logan could see their faces clearly.
But the blue quarrels flew straight and struck the enemy soldiers, who were packed close together.
Kawaaaang!
“Aaaargh!” someone screamed.
“Wh-what is it!” another cried.
“Magic! It’s magic!” someone else shouted.
The Wolves soldiers at the back panicked.
Kwakwakwakwakwang!
“Aack!”
“S-save me!”
“Fire!”
The enemy formation fell apart instantly.
To the soldiers, it seemed like lightning had struck their own men from a distance where the enemy was not even visible.
The twelve Bomb Bows created a large gap in the enemy lines with 120 exploding quarrels.
Even with that, the enemy formation continued to move forward.
Seeing this, Logan signaled to make an even bigger gap.
‘Already?’ Clayton thought.
Clayton, who was telling the soldiers to pull the thirty or so carts at the back of the crossbow cavalry, turned his head when he heard the explosions sooner than expected.
Then, he heard the shouts and screams.
“Lord Clayton!” someone called.
A flag from the command unit signaled a change in the plan.
“Everyone! Now’s the time!” Clayton shouted.
“Yes!” the soldiers replied.
After giving instructions to his students, Clayton raised his mana and held about ten magic stones.
He used the arcane magic he knew best.
“Arise!” Clayton commanded.
Kgeugeung.
The magic stones on the ground gathered large clumps of earth, shaping them into human forms.
Clayton created fifteen 3-meter golems, and his students created eleven golems.
The smallest golem, only 1.5 meters tall, was created the fastest. It began running towards the carts at the command of an even smaller girl. The golems each raised a handful of blue stones.
“Enemy distance, 400 meters!” Clayton shouted.
The golems all did the same thing.
The golems, made of magic, were able to perform the actions perfectly, even with only short training.
“Throw!” Clayton ordered.
Kuoong.
The stones turned red and soared into the air from the hands of the golems, which had superhuman strength.
And then…
Kwagwagwagwagwagwang!
The sound of destruction echoed across the battlefield.
“Wh-what is it! What is this!” Kai-Run Wolves shouted, losing his calm.
His trump card was failing before it could even be used.
“Lord, it’s magic!” someone exclaimed.
“Is there a mage in the enemy ranks?! How can this be happening!” Kai-Run shouted in disbelief.
Even with a mage, it would be impossible to attack thousands of troops at once like this.
The battlefield exploded in chaos. The air filled with the roar of explosions, the screams of men, and the smell of smoke and burning earth. Dust and dirt flew everywhere, making it hard to see.
In the end, Kai-Run Wolves had only one choice.
“Knight Order! Charge! Engage in close combat!” Kai-Run commanded.
Once the armies were mixed together, the magic attacks would not be possible.
That was all he could hope for.
But even that was just wishful thinking.
“Infantry, reload! Prepare to fire on the charging knights!” Kaisolon, the chief instructor and infantry commander, ordered. The soldiers moved with perfect discipline.
And then…
“Fire!”
A storm of quarrels rained down on the charging knights.
Tap tap tap!
The charge of the Wolves Knights, so fast just moments ago, started to slow down.
Crossbow bolts shot towards the charging knights. The knights themselves were not hit badly by the arrows. But the horses were.
Horses screamed!
As the first horses fell to the ground…
Kaisolon gave a signal. Then, Maclean’s other soldiers with swords started to move.
“Crossbow cavalry, spread to the left and right! Divide into two units, maintain your range, and target the fallen troops. Stay back, attack quickly, and retreat!”
“Yes!”
Viktor shouted, and the crossbow cavalry rushed forward as one. Viktor was a common knight, like many of them, and they all had the same training.
The crossbow soldiers moved to the sides of the battlefield, where the first crossbow attack had been. They charged at the enemy knights, who were now stuck and could not move easily. The crossbow soldiers aimed their weapons.
“Fire!”
Tap tap tap.
“Aargh!”
Screams started from the enemy knights.
The knights had managed to stop the first attack of crossbow bolts from over 3,000 soldiers. But now, more bolts were coming from the sides. This was terrible, even for the knights.
The crossbow soldiers had been very successful against the knights. But now, instead of attacking the knights more, they charged towards the enemy soldiers who were now in confusion.
“Kill them all!”
“Yes!”
Viktor was at the front of the charge. He remembered his lord’s words: ‘Be an example to the soldiers.’ So, Viktor raised his crossbow, not his sword. Most knights would want to use a sword, but Viktor did not.
Viktor agreed with this. He thought, ‘If we defeat the enemy soldiers quickly, Leah will be safer.’ So, for Viktor, the most important thing was to defeat them fast, no matter how he did it.
This moment was the start of how Viktor became known as ‘The Slayer.’ It was an even worse name than ‘Nobel Slayer,’ which he was called before. This was because…
“Aaaargh!”
Screams from the back of the enemy lines could be heard. It meant Viktor’s crossbow soldiers were now attacking the Wolves’ soldiers badly.
Now it was time for Maclean’s best fighters to move. Maclean said, “Son, let’s go.”
“Yes!” replied his son.
There were 153 knights, including Maclean’s two best knights. There were also 62 knights from Pereta. They didn’t really want to be there, but their lord had ordered them to join. In total, over 200 knights started to charge. They were going after the Wolves’ knights, who were now wounded and falling.
Kaisolon shouted, “Stop firing! Hold your fire!” The crossbow bolts stopped falling. The Wolves’ knights jumped back and breathed a sigh of relief without even thinking about it.
Then, Maclean’s knights charged. They were fresh and ready to fight. They charged towards the Wolves’ knights, many of whom were already on the ground or hurt.
“Damn it!” yelled a voice. It was the leader of the Wolves’ knights, at the very front. He had a huge greatsword and had blocked many crossbow bolts perfectly.
Nick Marcel, the Sword Breaker, was the highest-ranking knight and commander of the Wolves. He was filled with rage as he saw the enemy knights charging towards them.
Nick Marcel thought, ‘These country fools from a small, unimportant place think they are better than us! Their lord is just a normal knight. They think they can attack us head-on after we had a small problem with their new weapon.’
“Aman! Prepare! We will crush these fools who don’t know their place!”
“Yes!”
“Leave it to us, Commander!”
Two of his men, one big and one small, stood beside him. Around them, the Wolves’ knights got ready to fight.
“For the Wolves!”
“For the Wolves!”
‘We must defeat them quickly and win this battle!’ Nick Marcel tried to ignore the screams from behind and told himself this over and over.
He swung his sword with all his strength at the enemy knights coming towards him. He saw a young, red-haired knight at the front.
“Die!” Nick Marcel roared.
Kwwaaaang! The steel greatsword in his hands broke apart instantly! Pieces of metal flew forward with great force.
He was sure his attack would cut the young knight badly and stop the enemy charge. But he was wrong.
WHOOSH! A golden wave of energy came from the young red-haired knight. It pushed back the pieces of metal from Nick Marcel’s broken sword and hit him instead!
“No way…” Nick Marcel was shocked. He quickly grabbed another greatsword and swung it.
Luckily, his sword, now covered in power, cut through the golden wave, which was weaker now. But then – TZZZING! – a golden blade of energy, longer than two meters, shot out from the enemy’s sword and crashed into his greatsword.
TZEUK! He saw his own greatsword, now cut in half, fall to the ground. Without thinking, Nick Marcel rolled backwards.
This saved him for only a second. WHOOSH! A golden blade of energy flew past his head. Then, his eyes opened wide as he felt a freezing cold feeling in his chest.
FLASH! A golden beam of light shot from the tip of the enemy’s sword and went right through his chest.
“Heuk!”
“Keuk!”
“Aaargh!”
The golden light went through Nick Marcel and hit soldiers behind him, who also screamed. But Nick Marcel didn’t notice anymore.
Because a real, freezing cold wind was spreading through his chest. In just a few seconds, he started to lose consciousness and his arms and legs felt weak.
But the enemy didn’t stop. Nick Marcel, his vision blurring, saw the golden blade of energy coming towards him.
‘So, this is the end,’ he thought weakly.
CHOP! His head flew into the air, cut off from his body. Even as his head flew, he saw another red energy blade killing his soldiers. But his dead head felt nothing.
