The moon had gone down, and the night was very dark.
Deep within the Second Prince’s group, something started to move.
They moved quietly, without flags and with only a few torches. But thousands of people cannot move without making some noise.
There were sounds of feet, whispers, and the clinking of metal. It was impossible to be completely silent.
People who were watching closely could easily hear them.
Spies had been watching McLaine from the start. They quickly sent messages to their leaders about McLaine’s movements.
It was the second day of their plan. McLaine was going southwest, starting to go around the mountains, when a message arrived.
Report from your spy,’ it said. ‘They are being followed, only one day behind. The enemy army is coming straight this way, not the way we thought they would.’
Hmm,” Logan said, thinking aloud. “I thought they would just give us false information. But they are taking a big risk… Did they plan this all along? Well, that’s even better for us.”
Better?” the other person asked, confused.
Yes,” Logan replied. “Our first plan had more dangers. But now, they are giving us a perfect reason to change our plan. We don’t need to take those risks anymore.”
So… what does this mean we should do?” the other person asked, still unsure.
It means,” Logan said with a smile, “that there’s a perfect place nearby to stop them. There’s a tall hill that sticks out from the mountains.”
Yes,” the other person agreed, understanding now. “That would be a very good place to defend for a day.” Logan and his father smiled at each other, pleased with this turn of events.
Soon after, Logan called all his important officers to a meeting.
What? Bipros?” Heinkel shouted. “Are they crazy? They must be out of their minds!” Heinkel’s angry voice showed what all the knights in the tent were feeling.
Eileen spoke calmly, but her words were serious. “They know they can’t beat us easily. If they are not crazy, they must have a trick planned.” Everyone in the tent looked at Logan, waiting for his answer.
Logan smiled slightly and nodded. “Yes, you are right. In my first plan, I thought the enemy would attack us based on the false information we gave them. I expected an attack force as strong as two margraves. So, I was going to change our path a little to set a trap for them.”
When Logan said this, the knights’ faces became serious.
Even though McLaine was much stronger now, fighting two margraves at once without getting hurt seemed almost impossible to them.
Seeing the worried faces of his knights, Logan smiled again and said, “But because they are coming straight at us like this, things are actually better.”
Better?” he asked.
Yes!” Logan said, his voice stronger now. “We don’t need to follow the old plan and risk getting hurt at all, even a little bit. We will just defeat Bipros… and then we will leave this war!” The knights’ eyes opened wide in shock at Logan’s words.
The next day, the sun was high in the sky, but the army still hadn’t moved. Soldiers started to whisper and wonder why they were waiting.
Then, suddenly, shouts rang out. “Army behind us! I see the Rose Blooming in Flames! It’s Bipros’s army!”
They are here,” Logan said calmly. “All troops, to the back! Get ready to fight!”
Logan gave the order and quickly rode to the back of his army. His officers made the troops turn around to face the enemy.
The Bipros army, coming up the hill, stopped in surprise. They saw McLaine’s army waiting for them at the top of the hill.
The hill was next to the mountains and the road went uphill to reach it. Bipros’s scouts had seen them already, but it was too late to turn back.
Roger Bipros looked very worried.
Why are they already there?” Roger Bipros thought angrily. “Stupid fools! Did they guess our plan?”
Sir,” Aslan said, his face pale, “what do we do now? If they know…” Roger Bipros’s face became even more grim.
We can’t beat them alone, you know that. We need help, like we planned.”
How far away are they?” Aslan asked.
About a day’s journey for our army to the meeting place. But if ‘he’ and his best men come, it will only take them a few hours.”
…” Roger Bipros paused, then said, “Okay. Send a message to ‘them’. Tell them what’s happening. Tell them to hurry. And tell them we will try to hold McLaine back as long as we can.”
What should we write in the message?” Aslan asked.
We must make them believe us,” Roger Bipros said firmly. “We can say there is still a way to reach the South Gate from here.”
But sir,” Aslan said, “they won’t believe that.”
Maybe not,” Roger Bipros admitted, “but they won’t attack us without being sure. And if they do attack… then we have to fight.” “Sir, if we fight them…” Aslan started to say, but Roger Bipros slammed his fist on the table. BANG! “It’s too late to go back now! Send the message now! He is coming!” “Yes, sir. Please be careful.”
Hmph,” Roger Bipros muttered, his face showing his hopelessness. “To think I would be worried about McLaine now.” He slowly pushed his horse forward, riding alone.
Clop. Clop. The sound of hooves in the quiet air.
Both horses moved slowly towards each other, then stopped about a hundred meters apart.
Logan’s strong voice suddenly broke the silence, reaching Roger Bipros clearly. “Count Bipros, what are you doing on this road? This is not the way you were supposed to go, is it?”
A commander can choose their own path, can’t they?” Roger Bipros said, his voice made louder by magic so everyone could hear. “We just picked this road to stay hidden from the enemy.”
Logan’s voice was calm and steady.
But this road will make you late for the plan. To reach Harun Castle’s South Gate from here, you have to go over a mountain.”
I can handle that,” Roger Bipros said, trying to sound confident. “I am a 5th Circle mage, after all.”
I think even a very powerful mage would have trouble with that,” Logan replied, not believing him.
Thank you for your worry,” Roger Bipros said, “but we have important things to do. We shouldn’t waste time arguing. Shouldn’t we move on?”
In *this* situation?” Logan asked, his voice showing he didn’t believe a word. *Does he really think we are fools?* he thought.
Roger Bipros smiled weakly.
Well,” he said, “if you have other things to do, maybe we could just go past you? We are in a hurry, as you said.”
You want to go past us?” Logan asked, raising an eyebrow.
If you don’t mind,” Roger Bipros said, trying to sound polite.
Hmm. Alright, go ahead,” Logan said easily.
Roger Bipros was surprised by how quickly Logan agreed. “What…?” he said, his smile disappearing. But he quickly recovered.
Ah… Haha,” Roger Bipros laughed, but it sounded fake. “Thank you for your kindness! All troops, full speed! We are going to pass the McLaine army!”
But as he turned his horse, his smile vanished, and his face was tight with worry.
Thud, thud. The sound of the Bipros army starting to climb the hill.
And at the top, the McLaine army stood waiting, looking down like hawks from above.
The two armies got closer. You could see the worry on everyone’s faces, from the leaders to the soldiers.
Eventually, the Vifrosts army stopped. They were just far enough away to be safe from the McLaine army’s crossbows.
Roger Vifrosts said, “Heh heh. It seems you don’t plan to let us pass, even though you said you would.”
“The Count’s army seems strangely tense. Why is that?”
“There’s no need for allies to fight like this, even if we don’t like each other. If you don’t trust us, just go your own way. We can move far away and try again later.”
Roger Vifrosts tried to hide his worry, but Logan chuckled, acting relaxed.
“Haha. You don’t have to do that,” Logan said.
“What?”
“You said the field commander decides the route, right? We’re thinking of changing direction a bit. We’ll retreat for now.”
“What are you doing…?”
“All troops, advance! Return to the main camp!”
“Yes!”
The McLaine army started moving towards the Vifrosts army, which was stopped at the bottom of the hill.
Roger Vifrosts’s face changed color quickly. First, it went as white as bone, then blue with anger, and finally red with rage.
“What in the world are you doing?!”
Both armies had been pretending they weren’t going to fight, but everyone knew it was just an act.
“Let’s stop this charade,” Logan said. “Or should I tell Duke Valtermime right now? Can the field commander really do this?”
Logan shrugged, acting like it was nothing. This made Roger explode. “Fight! Attack now! Everyone, get ready!”
At the same time, Logan drew his sword.
“All troops, charge! Finish off the Vifrosts!”
The clumsy charade was over, and a real battle began.
‘Why isn’t he running away?’ Logan wondered.
The McLaine army was much stronger than the Vifrosts army right now.
Logan didn’t understand why Roger Vifrosts had come so close without retreating, especially since he probably knew a battle was likely.
But the answer came as soon as the battle started.
It wasn’t a pleasant surprise.
A thousand soldiers on horseback suddenly charged out from the enemy camp, led by that annoying guy.
Roger Vifrosts watched the sharp, glinting blades in their hands and gritted his teeth.
“Now, let’s give those enemies a hot surprise! Get ready!”
“Yes!”
Roger Vifrosts gave the order, and the Vifrosts knights in the middle of the group reached into their pockets at the same time.
They all pulled out blue stones.
“It’ll be fun to get hit by your own weapon,” Roger Vifrosts said with a cruel smile. The stones turned red and flew into the air.
The red stones flew straight towards them.
These were the same weapons they used, thrown with great strength by the Vifrosts knights. They flew forward at a terrifying speed.
Viktor was riding his horse when he saw the stones and his face turned serious.
“Liber…!”
He gave the order quickly.
The crossbow soldiers reacted fast because they were well-trained.
Some of them were quick enough to fire their crossbows at the red stones in less than a second.
But they weren’t the best archers in the world, so they couldn’t shoot down hundreds of stones at once.
A few crossbow bolts hit the bombs, but most of them kept flying towards the crossbow soldiers, glowing red.
Viktor’s face turned pale.
Suddenly, a huge golden net of light, bright as the sun, spread out above them.
Kwaaaang!!
‘Kuk!’
It was a quick decision.
Logan couldn’t let the crossbow soldiers get badly hurt like that.
Logan used his Ghost Shadow power and the Boots of the Wind God to fly over the crossbow soldiers like lightning.
He reached out his sword with all his might.
As the golden light of his sword, his longest-range attack, appeared, he realized something.
Whoosh.
‘This is not enough,’ he thought.
The light could destroy anything it hit, but it couldn’t stop all the Liberatios falling everywhere.
And he didn’t need that much power right now.
He just needed to cover a large area with enough power to make the bombs explode.
In that moment of crisis, his mind and body worked together perfectly.
He used his special sword skill in a way he couldn’t normally do.
The golden light from Logan’s sword spread out in five directions, widening as it went, reaching towards the front.
Each strand of light looked like a bolt of lightning crossing the sky. All five together looked like a huge golden net spread out in the sky.
The golden net blocked the entire area above the crossbow soldiers, with just enough power to explode the bombs.
Kwaaaang!!
“Aargh!”
Some soldiers were hurt, but it was a miracle that only a dozen or so were injured, considering how many Liberatios had been thrown.
“What, what is it!”
“What’s going on…?”
“It’s the Grand Prince!”
“Don’t stop! Advance! The enemy is right in front of us!”
They were only surprised for a moment.
Viktor shouted, and the crossbow soldiers started moving faster again.
They raised their crossbows at the enemy knights, who were even more confused than they were.
Tap tap tap.
Tap tap tap!
The Vifrosts knights were showered with crossbow bolts and started to lose their momentum.
“What in the world is going on!”
An angry shout came from deep within the enemy lines.
The enemy commander’s panicked voice calmed his soldiers down.
‘They don’t have any more bombs now,’ Viktor thought.
That gave Viktor and the crossbow soldiers strength.
“Keep shooting and spread out to the sides!”
Viktor shouted, and the crossbow soldiers began to do what they were supposed to do.
However, the Vifrosts didn’t give up easily.
