Tymon was a soldier from the Duchy of Douglas. He thought bad luck followed him everywhere.
Once, a terrible sickness came to his village. All his brothers died. Tymon lived, but he felt no luck in it. Later, he worked carrying goods for traders. Bandits attacked their group. Everyone else was killed, but Tymon lived again.
Then, war broke out in the Duchy. Tymon became a soldier. But instead of fighting at the front, he was sent to guard quiet areas far from the battles. He stayed behind while other soldiers went to fight.
“Bad luck,” Tymon muttered to himself. “It’s always bad luck.” He felt like a cursed man.
Recent events also seemed to follow this pattern.
When he was sent to the front lines to help the tired soldiers, he felt worried. But then, they announced they would stop fighting and take over a small, unimportant village instead.
Some soldiers were not happy and said the real war was just starting later, and a smaller fight was happening now. Tymon didn’t care about these complaints.
Most of the soldiers, including Tymon, thought it was much better to fight in a war they were sure to win than to fight in a war where they could die at any time.
And if they did well in this ‘easy war,’ maybe they could avoid the real war later and stay in the back.
Thinking this way, Tymon moved forward from the back of the group with what little bravery he could find.
But the war was not what he expected.
A sharp whistling sound filled the air.
“Aaaargh!”
His friends who were ahead of him fell to the ground all at once, screaming in fear.
Even as the strong knights blocked the arrows with their shields and kept moving forward…
Then, a ball of fire fell from the sky.
A loud explosion shook the ground, and everything around it turned red.
“Kuaaaaah!”
Tymon stared, his mouth dry. He saw a knight screaming, his armor glowing red with fire. He couldn’t look away.
‘W-what is this? This isn’t what I was told!’
More sadly than any war he had ever heard of, his friends were falling.
Soon, arrows rained down like black rain before his eyes.
“E-easy, you said! You said it was an easy war, you ba…!!”
Before he could say what he felt to anyone…
Tymon’s body, now full of arrows, fell to the ground.
Tymon’s bad luck didn’t help him in a real war.
“What in the world is going on?!”
Jordan Valtermaim had been watching the enemy from behind, looking relaxed. But now, he looked worried.
He guessed that there were at least seven or eight thousand enemy soldiers inside, judging by the number of arrows.
At that moment, he saw just as many arrows falling on the First Prince’s soldiers to the south.
“Aaaargh!”
Even though they were allies for now, their screams were too loud, since they were also rivals.
‘No, there are many more. Over ten thousand. How did this happen?’
He was surprised, but he couldn’t pull back the army now.
“Luther! Clear a path! Find out how many are hiding in there!”
“…Understood.”
At Jordan Valtermaim’s shout, a very large man began to move.
The First Prince’s soldiers had the same idea. A superhuman covered in white wind ran towards the fortress from the south.
“They’re coming!!”
The enemy knights struggled against the many arrows.
But two figures moving like the wind behind them caught the attention of the Maclane soldiers.
When they got close to the fortress walls…
‘Huh?’
Logan felt a strange energy coming from a fortress wall nearby and moved towards it quickly.
A golden sword made of energy stretched out and cut through the empty air.
A powerful boom shook the air. At the same time, a cold white light spread and froze part of the fortress wall.
“Ugh, it’s cold!”
“W-what is it?!”
“It’s magic! Fall back!”
Some of the soldiers were surprised, but Logan looked over a kilometer away.
If he hadn’t acted, that magic would have killed many soldiers.
‘So far away…! Those mages!’
But he didn’t have time to complain. Logan felt another strong surge of energy and had to move again quickly.
In that situation…
“Lord Logan!!”
He turned to the shout and saw a white light shooting up from below the southern fortress wall.
“Damn it!”
When he saw it, Logan stopped trying to block Juan Douglas’s magic.
‘Even a mage can’t use magic like that many times in a row without getting ready first.’
Trusting this, Logan swung his sword with all his power at the superhuman covered in white wind who had shot up from below him.
Wicken Kalia smiled coldly as he blocked the golden energy sword.
This was the man who had embarrassed him a month ago.
Now he had a chance to get even.
‘I’ll kill you!’
Wicken hit the golden energy sword with all his strength, even though he was in the air.
But the hit only pushed the man back a little.
The man’s face turned pale, but he didn’t cough up blood or fall down. He didn’t seem badly hurt.
‘Huh?’
Wicken didn’t understand. He had hit with all his strength, but…
Aura was a power that could destroy, and weaker energies were supposed to break in its light.
It was about the type of energy, not how much there was.
Also, even a top knight should have had trouble blocking his full power, even with an energy sword. So how…?
“Get lost!”
The man was getting closer and swinging his sword again.
Wicken could have dodged it and attacked using his Sky Walk, but he was too proud.
‘He must have used a magic item.’
But it was impossible to use many magic items that could block Aura’s power one after another.
Wicken knew even magic items had limits. Unless someone was more than human, they couldn’t handle too much power.
Wicken was sure of his power. He gathered his energy, and a swirling white aura like a blizzard surrounded him. With a shout, he swung his wind-powered fist at the man’s sword.
Clang!
The man flew back again, crashing into the wall. Wicken watched his face, expecting to see pain, fear – something! But the man just looked… annoyed. His face was a little pale, but that was all.
This can’t be right, Wicken thought, his mind racing. It’s not just a magic item. What is he?
He was so confused that he almost forgot he was in the middle of a battle.
Wicken Kalia was falling downwards. He was so surprised that he forgot to control the wind for a few seconds.
Above his head, a golden greatsword, huge and shining, plunged down.
Kwaaaang-!!
It was the loudest explosion of the battle so far.
Everyone on the wall was watching the fight. Logan gasped, his face pale.
“Still not enough, huh?”
He looked down at the base of the wall.
Wicken Kalia, soaked and sputtering in the moat, glared at him.
He had hit the enemy hard, but the man didn’t seem badly hurt.
But Logan smiled. He had stopped the wind-like power of the aura, the very thing he feared most.
Moreover…
“Woooaaah!”
Suddenly, his allies cheered.
Logan looked back and saw Luther Kyle, the half-giant, staggering. His body was covered in arrows.
‘Jackpot!’
Seeing Luther Kyle stumble like a pin cushion, Logan remembered Clayton’s words. He remembered the magic he now knew, Gravity Control.
The larger and heavier the body, the stronger the magic. So, if it’s Marquis Luther Kyle, I will definitely…….
A smile appeared on Logan’s face.
Most of the Coalition forces were watching the staggering superhuman.
It was a shocking sight that no one had expected.
“Keep shooting! Kill the superhuman!” Padrick shouted from afar.
An overwhelming wave of arrows flew towards the half-giant.
Luther Kyle stumbled back, looking broken and defeated, not like the mighty warrior he was supposed to be.
‘I want to finish him off, but…’
Logan couldn’t act yet because of the other superhuman glaring at him from below.
And soon…
“Retreat! Retreat!”
Was it because of the unexpected damage? Or because the superhuman was losing? The allied forces began to retreat.
“How do you like that! You bastards!”
“We won!”
“No matter how many of you come, we’re unshakeable!”
The middle-aged men of the Self-Defense Forces shouted bravely.
“Wooaaah!”
All the Maclaine troops inside Aegis cheered.
The worried looks behind him turned into sighs of relief. He could feel it without even looking back.
Wicken Kalia frowned at Logan’s smile. He didn’t attack again but turned back towards the main camp as ordered.
Only then did Logan notice the enemy forces. Most of them had already moved far away.
They were well-trained.
But Logan just watched them, feeling calm.
‘We’ve held them off once. And if we’ve done it once, it shouldn’t be too hard to do it again.’
He probably wouldn’t have to use his last plan just yet.
The light of hope felt a little brighter.
Back at the enemy camp, away from the sounds of battle, things were very different.
“How can this be happening?!”
No one argued. Everyone in the command room was confused.
No one in the command room could believe it. Normal soldiers with weapons that could hurt knights? It was unthinkable.
“Calm down, Your Excellency. Our forces are still stronger. Be patient. Attack carefully and destroy them,” Luchen Talos said calmly.
Luchen Talos’s reasonable words calmed Jordan down a little.
“Ugh. Of course. Haa, alright. What’s the plan?”
“If you just want to destroy Maclaine, we could leave the 1st Prince’s army and go north to crush the town that is their center. But…”
“Why would I want to crush commoners? The people we need are over there.”
“…I thought you would say that.”
“That brat, the lord of Maclaine, and the mage who made that bomb are all there. I will tear apart the one who mocked me and capture the one who knows the secrets of that new weapon. And I’ll do it before Hwan!”
Bang!
Jordan slammed his fist on the table, breaking it.
“That is what this war is really about. I don’t care about the land of Maclaine. Our real enemies aren’t those annoying people!”
His red eyes blazed above the broken table.
Luchen Talos saw the ambition in Jordan’s eyes and nodded.
“Yes. The real enemies are the 1st Prince and Duke Hwan Douglas.”
“That’s right. So, we need a new plan. We need to win with as few losses as possible.”
“…Understood.”
Luchen Talos held back many things he wanted to say.
“We’re going to win this war anyway. We want that weapon, not land. Tell Hwan we’ll take care of that mage since Luther is hurt.”
“…He won’t agree.”
“I’m just telling him first, in case something happens. The lord or that brat probably know how to make it too.”
Jordan thought about the red-eyed brat who had hidden such a strong force and acted so suspiciously.
“And tell him that brat is mine too. I want him!”
“…Yes.”
He probably won’t agree.
Luchen Talos didn’t say that the Duke probably knew that already.
