“Ah, Cleo, come in.” King Rogers sounded almost happy to see someone familiar. But the Swordmaster, Sir Kael, frowned at the new voice. He turned to look. The doors to the main hall were now open. What he saw made his eye twitch.
Ladies of the court walked in, carrying big plates of food. It looked like a party. The food was rich and smelled delicious. But the ladies’ clothes were very thin and see-through. You could see their skin. Sir Kael frowned. It was not right for a memorial service.
“Your Majesty, what is all this?” Sir Kael asked.
“Ah, it’s a memorial,” the King said. “A service to remember the dead. Today is the last day of it. Please be patient with me. Haha.”
Sir Kael frowned slightly. This “memorial service” was supposed to honor gods for three days each, for a total of twenty-seven days. It was to calm the spirits of the dead. But no real memorial service had parties with food and wine like this. Sir Kael was very disappointed. He tried to change the subject.
“Who is that man?” Sir Kael asked, pointing to a man he didn’t know. The man looked friendly and was helping the ladies put out food. He even took a bottle of wine from inside his clothes and put it on the table. The man seemed to jump a little when Sir Kael spoke.
“Oh, that’s Cleo,” the King said. “He used to write things in the palace. But he’s very good at knowing what people are thinking. So, I made him my main helper, my Chief of Staff. Royal Tutor, you can let Cleo handle things now.”
“I am honored to meet you, Grand Duke,” Cleo said, bowing politely.
Cleo’s bow was perfect, but Sir Kael still didn’t trust him. Something about Cleo felt wrong. Sir Kael just didn’t like him.
“After this service is over today,” Sir Kael said to Cleo, but looking at the King, “make sure His Majesty takes care of himself. He should drink less of that medicine wine.”
Was the King even listening?
“I can’t tell the King what to do,” Cleo replied. “I just do what he says.” Cleo’s answer annoyed Sir Kael.
“You worry too much, Royal Tutor,” the King said, sounding a little angry. “I can take care of myself.”
Sir Kael knew it was his duty to give advice, but he couldn’t force the King to listen. He sighed inside. He had no choice but to bow his head.
“I am sorry, Your Majesty,” Sir Kael said.
“No, no,” the King said. “I know you care about me. But I’m not a child anymore. Don’t worry so much.”
“Yes, Your Majesty,” Sir Kael said.
“Okay,” the King said. “We’re talking about other things now. Why are you really here?”
“Yes,” Sir Kael said. He wanted to stop talking about the King’s health. “I came to ask about Kairon Wolves. He’s still kneeling outside the palace. If he dies there from hunger, people will say bad things about the royal family.”
“Ah, that man who just wants to take advantage?” the King said. “Yes, I was just deciding what to do. The royal family is still weak. I guess we have to let him in, even if I don’t want to.”
Luckily, the King seemed to agree with Sir Kael.
“But,” the King continued, “I will make his title lower. He will only get a small piece of land far away. And I won’t let him have a strong army. Also, I heard he’s secretly rich. So, I think we should send a powerful wizard from the Royal Magic Tower with him to keep an eye on him.”
“That is wise,” Sir Kael said. He felt relieved. Maybe the King was still smart after all.
“Haha,” the King laughed. “Now that the boring stuff is over, Royal Tutor, let’s drink! You’re not going to leave after just talking about work, are you?”
The King pushed a glass towards him. Sir Kael had to take it. He lifted the glass. *When was the last time I drank wine in the middle of the day?* The wine tasted bad, like his mood.
“Sir Kael,” a palace worker called out. “A message has come for the royal family. Maybe you should look at it?”
Sir Kael was leaving the palace, feeling tired and unhappy after talking to the King. He looked annoyed when the worker stopped him. “Why are you telling me?”
“Chief of Staff Cleo is with the King right now,” the worker said. “You’re the only one I can ask, Sir Kael.”
“No matter who it’s from, the King’s business is most important,” Sir Kael said. “Tell them to call back later.”
“But, Sir Kael…” the worker said, looking worried.
Sir Kael frowned even more. He was already in a bad mood. “Is it a message that can’t wait?”
“Yes. It’s a message from Count Logan McLaine.”
Sir Kael’s eye twitched. “Ah, Logan. Haa… Fine, take me there.”
“Thank you, Sir Kael,” the worker said.
Sir Kael knew Logan, his student, was still important in the palace. This didn’t make him completely happy. He didn’t even notice the palace worker bowing to him anymore. He had changed the world, but maybe he had lost his honor doing it. He felt like things were going wrong, not like he had planned. This made his heart heavy.
[“It’s been a while, Logan,”] Sir Kael’s voice came from the device.
“Master?” Logan said, surprised. “Why are you answering this?” Logan was about to bow to the screen, but he stopped.
[“The King is busy,”] Sir Kael said. [“Just tell me what you need.”] Sir Kael sounded like he was in a bad mood.
“Is something wrong?” Logan asked.
[“No, nothing,”] Sir Kael said. [“Not yet.”]
“Not yet?” Logan’s face became serious. He noticed his master’s words.
[“Forget it,”] Sir Kael said. [“You wouldn’t call on this royal line for no reason. Tell me why you called.”]
Logan knew he shouldn’t ask more questions when his master spoke like that. He trusted his master would deal with any problems. So, Logan quickly explained why he called.
“I want to give a title to someone who works for me,” Logan said. “I’ve already used all the times I could give titles because of my service. So, I need to ask the King to give him a small title, a baronetcy.” Logan knew this should be easy for the King to agree to.
But Sir Kael’s face looked even worse when he heard this. [“A title?”] Sir Kael said, sounding angry. [“Logan, if you start using your power in a wrong way, against the rules…”]
“I know it would be wrong,” Logan said quickly. “But this is the first and last time, I promise. I didn’t give enough reward to someone who worked very hard for me, in secret. I want to fix my mistake now. Please, Master, I beg you.” Logan bowed deeply to show he was serious.
Sir Kael sighed again and again. He waited a long time before speaking, like he was giving up. [“So,”] he said, [“you’re not asking for more land or money, just a title?”]
“No, of course not,” Logan said.
[“Haa, okay,”] Sir Kael said. [“I will talk to the King about it. But remember this, Logan: this is the last time I will let you give a title without a good reason.”]
“I will remember,” Logan said.
[“Okay. I’ll let you know soon,”] Sir Kael said.
“Thank you, Master,” Logan said.
The screen went black. Sir Kael didn’t even say goodbye. Logan knew his master was not happy with his request. But his master’s mood was worse than just being unhappy. *Something is really wrong,* Logan thought.
Logan was worried about his master. He was about to leave the room when suddenly—
“Boo-hoo! Young Master, why are you doing this for me? Why are you so kind to someone like me? Boo-hoo!” Dwayne ran into the room, crying loudly. His face was wet with tears and full of emotion. Dwayne hugged Logan tightly. Logan had to pull Dwayne off him. Dwayne was crying so much!
Just one week later, Dwayne became a Baron. The news came to McLaine quickly.
* * *
“…Because of his great work, Dwayne Filsner, who was just a common person, is now given the title of Baron,” King Rogers von Grandia read loudly.
Logan finished reading the important paper. Suddenly, a loud roar filled the room.
A roar like thunder erupted.
The roar came from everyone. Administrators, servants in the offices, and even the soldiers cheered loudly.
Cheers burst forth from everyone surrounding Dwayne.
Dwayne, the administrator with the beard, looked around in surprise. He saw smiles on the faces of everyone watching.
“Sniff. Thank you, Young Master. Thank you,” Dwayne said, tears welling up in his eyes again, just like last week.
Startled, Logan unconsciously took a step back before chuckling and patting Dwayne on the shoulder.
And then…
“Our big brother is a noble now!” shouted one of Dwayne’s friends.
“Yeah! Don’t forget about us!” yelled another.
“Congratulations, Baron Dwayne!” people shouted from all around.
“Baron Dwayne Pilsner! Well done!”
The crowd was so excited that they lifted Dwayne up. He was laughing and cheering as they carried him around the residence for a long time.
“Now you can use those new administrators, right? The ones who just arrived?” Dwayne asked, still sniffling.
“Still, it’s true that they are more capable than I am. Really, really… thank you.”
“I don’t need someone who is capable, but someone I can trust. I don’t know administration well. Help me a little more. Don’t even think about retiring. Got it?”
“Yes, yes! Young Master. I will do my best until I no longer have the strength to read documents!”
Good.
Because you’ll have to do all the paperwork now. Logan smiled, happy to think that he would soon be free from paperwork.
Giving Dwayne the title had a bigger effect than Logan thought. It made Dwayne happy, and it also made all the administrators, old and new, feel much more motivated.
– In our McLaine territory, even civil officials can become nobles if they prove their loyalty and ability.
The speed of document processing in the administrative department became much faster, and although the faces of the administrators still looked tired, they were, on the other hand, strangely gleaming.
‘I don’t know how long that will last, though.’
Also, many more people applied for the administrator jobs that were still open.
At least, it was a very positive thing for McLaine, who had a lot of work to do right now.
* * *
“What are all those swarming people over there?”
“Ah, those are administrative applicants.”
“Administrative applicants? Civil officials?”
“Yes. Sir Heinkel.”
“So many people are gathering to select administrators? Isn’t that something you can only do if you’re a bit smart?”
“I heard that as the territory became famous, talented people came from all over. I also heard that knights are constantly requesting to be enlisted……”
“Hoo, is that so?”
Heinkel’s eyes twinkled at the soldier’s words. Then, he immediately moved his steps and went to the residence.
“Great Young Master!” Heinkel called out.
“Sir Heinkel, what brings you here?” Logan asked.
“I heard so many people are applying to be administrators – maybe a thousand every day!” Heinkel said.
“Oh? Are you interested in being an administrator too?” Logan asked, misunderstanding.
“No. If there are so many people who know how to read and have received higher education, I think a much larger number will apply if we recruit soldiers now.”
It was a good idea. Everyone knew McLaine was becoming very powerful in the kingdom. And since there wasn’t a war right now, many people would want to become soldiers there.
“Ah, I was just thinking about getting more soldiers. We don’t have enough soldiers for our bigger territory. Would you like to be in charge of recruiting them?”
Logan could just make the local soldiers use crossbows. But he also wanted to find and train people who could become knights one day. This was important for the future.
Logan had no reason to refuse if this old servant was willing to take on the job with enthusiasm. Heinkel nodded with a beaming smile at the words.
“Yes. Of course. I will use the sensory test that you mentioned before as the selection criteria.”
“Yes. Please do so. Even if it seems strange……”
“Absolutely not. Even without that, it seemed that the guys selected based on that standard were gathering Force much faster than the other guys.”
“……Yes?!”
Heinkel’s words shocked Logan.
“……Can you feel that?”
Something he thought only he could do. Could a knight who had lost his Force do that?
“Yes. That’s…… After losing Force, I think I’ve become more sensitive to what I’ve lost.”
That’s possible? How?
‘Became more sensitive after losing Force? I’ve never heard of that in my past life either?’
Heinkel didn’t notice that Logan was suddenly feeling a little embarrassed. Logan had thought this ability was unique to him. Heinkel smiled awkwardly.
“Anyway, that’s why I’m feeling more rewarded. I can properly see the guys who have the potential to become knights.”
“Ah…… Yes……”
“Then, I will organize the exact number of people needed and the training schedule into a report and give it to you later.”
“Yes, yes. Please do. But Sir Heinkel. Can you tell me more about that feeling?”
Only then did Heinkel, who had recognized that Logan’s expression had changed slightly, tilt his head.
“Yes. That’s not difficult.”
Heinkel told Logan in detail about the changes in his senses after his body was ruined by the injury.
‘Hmm, is this really possible?’ Logan thought, deeply considering Heinkel’s words. He believed Heinkel because Heinkel had sensed something that Logan thought was his secret.
However, that process. His words. Something intensely stimulated Logan’s unconsciousness.
‘It’s very rare for a knight to live after losing their Force,’ Logan thought. ‘And Heinkel was badly hurt in his aura too. Aura… that’s the powerful energy that controls Force.’ He thought about the senses Heinkel gained after losing his Force because of the aura damage.
‘When I died in my past life…….’ The scene I saw at the very end. And the transcendental senses I gained since I returned. If I can find that common ground…….
Suddenly, a golden light started to glow from Logan’s fingers. As the room got darker, the light became brighter and more golden. It was a strange and wonderful light, not like the Force he knew.
