Logan wanted to disappear. He really didn’t want the Emperor to notice him anymore. So, he stayed inside the palace all the time, not even going outside.
He trained hard in the palace training room, hoping the festival would finish soon. But today, he felt like he couldn’t get any stronger, not right now. He stopped, feeling a bit empty. A small, sad laugh came out of his mouth.
Or maybe… it wasn’t really a limit.
“This is okay,” Logan told himself, trying to believe it. “It’s actually good.” He sighed deeply. He was alone in the middle of the training room. Dust motes danced in the sunlight coming through the high windows.
Whirr.
The Force Core in his heart beat faster than ever. The golden light in his hand showed he was close to becoming something more.
His body shook with excitement, feeling like he was about to be reborn.
Luther Kyle was right.
Logan knew that as soon as he understood Aura and used it, he would become Transcendent.
This was different from other Transcendent people who woke up their powers by accident during training.
Even though Logan knew he could control when he became Transcendent, he had to stop himself.
‘No. If I become Transcendent here in the Imperial City, I’ll be in real trouble.’
The Emperor was already paying too much attention to him. If he found out Logan was Transcendent, he might try to keep him here, even if it caused problems with other countries.
Logan remembered the Emperor’s eyes shining strangely. He held back his desire to evolve.
Whirr.
The Force Core in his heart vibrated, as if it didn’t like being held back. Logan carefully calmed it down.
‘I’ll do it after I leave Aserian! Not now! Never!’
Whirr.
He calmed the Four-Star Force Core, which seemed to be sulking. He forced himself to gather his strength. The Force, which wanted to be reborn, spread through his body with sadness.
Then, Logan realized this wasn’t just sad.
‘This is… actually a good thing.’
Just feeling the moment of awakening, even for a short time, showed him what it was like to go beyond human limits and the power he would get.
He also felt that if he prepared and refined this power, he could evolve even better when he truly awakened.
‘It’s not a delay at all. It’s getting ready for a bigger jump.’
Luther Kyle had talked about designing his awakening like it was a dream. Now, it was becoming real.
Not just a wish, but something he could touch.
‘I’ll prepare during the time I have left. After I leave the Imperial City…’
He would make his dream come true.
Logan’s fist shook.
He finished his training feeling good. Victor was waiting outside and quickly came to him.
He didn’t look happy.
“What’s wrong?”
“…A guest has arrived.”
“A guest? I told you to ignore them.”
“That’s, that wasn’t possible.”
“What?”
Logan was confused. After hearing Victor’s answer, he sighed and understood.
“Alright, let’s go.”
Since the last party, the gifts in the corner of the palace had been growing. More and more people were trying to give him things.
Some lower-ranking nobles came to see Logan twice a day. Nobles with the rank of Count or higher, who never used to visit, started knocking on the door of the palace.
One Count, whom Logan reluctantly met because things were getting out of control, said,
– You have caught the Emperor’s eye. You will become the highest-ranking noble in the Empire one day. I have never seen him want someone’s talent so much. So, they want to make connections now.
It was a ridiculous thing to say.
Basically, everyone thought he would become a citizen of the Empire.
That’s why Logan didn’t even go outside the palace and only focused on training.
But this guest was someone he couldn’t ignore.
This group was not easy to persuade, and the Imperial guards at the palace couldn’t treat them lightly.
Creak.
The door opened, and an old knight with white hair and a white beard came in.
He was Transcendent but looked like he was at the end of his life.
He was Tris Hornsby, the best swordsman on the continent.
He had been removed from his position as Commander of the Imperial Knights because of what happened in the duel with Jerome.
“It’s my first time meeting you properly. I am Logan McLain.”
“Tris Hornsby. Jerome’s master.”
The old knight’s introduction was simple. His eyes showed complex feelings.
Logan saw those feelings and asked directly.
“Did you come for revenge?”
Pfft.
“Revenge… Would that be right when His Majesty has forgiven him?”
The old knight’s face became peaceful.
“Then why are you here to see me?”
Would it have been better if he had said he came for revenge?
Logan’s face became serious without him realizing it. The old knight waved his hand.
“Don’t be so worried. His Majesty’s orders are clear. I won’t hurt you, who is His Majesty’s guest.”
“Then…?”
“His Majesty is worried about you. He said you’re staying inside and not coming out. So, he ordered me to show you another ‘wide world’ myself.”
“Excuse me?”
“Actually, I was worried you might think there are no talented people in the Empire after beating Jerome. So, I volunteered.”
“What does that…?”
Before Logan could finish, a flame-like aura came from Tris Hornsby’s body.
It wasn’t just a feeling. The aura really looked like flames.
“It’s the typification of aura. Only five people in the Empire can do this. It will be a good experience.”
Logan was shocked. He had never seen anything like this before.
“If you don’t focus, your soul might be damaged.”
The old knight’s voice was calm. The flames pressed down on Logan’s body.
‘Ugh!’
Suddenly, everything disappeared. He was surrounded by flames.
It felt like he had jumped into a fire without realizing it.
He felt a lot of pressure, so much that he couldn’t move. He felt a burning pain all over his body.
The pain was so real it didn’t seem real at all.
‘Ugh! What, what is this?!’
Could this really be done with just aura?
A knight, not even a magician, was giving him trouble without even touching him. Logan was close to becoming Transcendent.
He had never heard of this before, even with all his experience from his past and present lives.
‘This is ridiculous!’
The shock made him stubborn. He was able to handle the pain that felt like it was burning his whole body.
Whirr.
The power from the Force Core in his heart began to spread through his body, fighting against the aura.
Logan gasped for breath. Even though he had tried to fight it, the terrible pressure and burning pain all over his body were still there.
“Ugh…”
Even with magic power in every inch of his body, he couldn’t move, and the pressure was too much to bear.
The only reason Logan hadn’t passed out was that his body felt the same despite the pain.
‘It’s not an attack that hurts my body. But what is it?’
It wasn’t a simple trick like an illusion.
At his level, he shouldn’t be fooled by simple magic tricks.
If so…
‘Was it a power that attacked his mind, his very soul? From a knight?’
He never thought it was possible, but as soon as he understood what it was, he knew what to do.
‘Flame Divide,’ Logan thought. This was his special technique.
Soon, golden lines started to appear on Logan’s head.
Flame Divide was a strong power. It could stop Aura. It could break through barriers. It could even weaken divine power if used against special wounds.
This secret art could cut through any magic power. Logan had practiced it so much that he could use it just by thinking about it.
Following Logan’s will, the golden power cut through the ‘unknown power’ that was holding his soul.
Whoosh!
The red space was instantly cut open.
‘Got it!’
The space around him, which had been burning red, went back to normal, and he saw the surprised face of the old knight.
“Ha…?!”
What?! How dare he do that?!
Logan was about to smile, seeing the clear emotion on his face, but the old knight narrowed his eyes and pointed his right index finger at him.
A simple action.
His fingertip moved down in the air. The moment it did…
Crack!
He heard a sound like the world splitting apart, and he saw the world being cut in half by that line.
And his own body, touching that line, was also being split.
‘No!!’
A scream stuck in his throat, and his mind went blank as the world seemed to break apart.
‘Am I dying like this?’
An unexpected death.
The painful thought hurt his soul.
No.
I can’t end it like this, so stupidly.
Never!!
Anger grew inside him. This anger pulled his soul back from the darkness.
Then…
“Gack!”
Sensation suddenly returned, and his vision blurred.
It was as if the broken world was coming back together.
The dizziness was so bad that he kept throwing up even as he fell.
“Ugh!”
“Young Master!”
“My Lord!”
“How dare he!”
Something didn’t make sense.
He couldn’t understand how the furniture and buildings were still there, and it was strange that the knights only rushed over after he had fallen.
Logan raised a hand to stop his men, forced his eyes open, and looked at the old knight.
That old man was the one who had done this.
“Wh, what is this…?”
He couldn’t speak properly because of the effects.
As he looked up at him, tears and mucus covered his face, a calm voice spoke clearly.
“Soul Blade. A sword strike that cuts the soul. Only the best Aura users can learn it.”
“Soul…?”
“Yes. This is what the strongest in the empire shows you. You should be proud of this for life.”
What a load of nonsense.
Attacking someone suddenly and making them like this!
He wanted to curse, but his body was in such bad shape that he couldn’t even say those words easily.
Seeing him like that, the best swordsman on the continent calmly turned away.
“Come to the empire if you want to learn.”
He left behind those incredibly arrogant words.
A shadow fell over Triss, who was thinking hard.
“Did your business go well?”
She looked up and saw her student, who was much taller than her.
Her student had lost one eye in an accident.
“Jerome…”
“You don’t look well.”
It wasn’t just the eye.
His special power, which felt like great authority, was now half as strong.
Even though it was only a few days after this bad thing happened, her student’s voice was calm.
‘He is very strong.’
He chose to get stronger instead of give up because of problems.
That was her student.
However…
“…He even stopped her show of power. And he’s not even an Aura user.”
“I see. He has to be that strong to be worth fighting.”
The guy smiled as if he was happy with the strength of the person who had taken his eye.
His determination was good, but compared to how strong Logan seemed, even Jerome’s strength didn’t seem enough.
‘He survived the Soul Blade. That guy….’
She hadn’t planned to use that technique.
She was embarrassed that Logan easily stopped her power display, so she used a stronger attack, but he survived an attack that could have badly hurt him.
“He is a genius that His Majesty would notice.”
He is better than you.
‘If he comes to the empire, I might be able to create a truly great thing before she dies.’
She didn’t say what she was thinking to her student.
Triss Hornsby just sighed.
Someone who can survive the Soul Blade and stay strong won’t give up easily.
So, she kept worrying.
‘Your Majesty, if you can’t get him to join you, you must kill him.’
She wondered what to do. Should she tell the king to kill Logan? Or should she wait and see what great things Logan might do as a knight? He was so talented.
