After two long weeks of marching, the McLaine army finally reached Zahid Castle. This castle was the very heart of the rebels, their strongest place.
Other groups of soldiers were fighting rebels in different places, but everyone knew McLaine’s army was the biggest and most important.
Even though they expected small attacks, the march was very quiet.
‘Are they planning to fight us all in one big battle here? Do they think that will work?’
Logan could only know the answer when they arrived at Zahid Castle.
He saw rows and rows of familiar weapons – repeating crossbows – all along the wide castle walls.
Logan muttered, ‘So, it’s come to this.’ He remembered giving these crossbows out to help the kingdom.
Viktor, Logan’s helper since coming back from the Empire, answered Logan’s worried words.
‘They were already all over the kingdom. But I didn’t think they would end up with the rebels,’
‘You said there are more than 500 knights, and some are really strong?’
‘Yes, we know of three.’
‘Could there be more?’
‘I’m just saying it to be safe. The last count was more than 10,000 soldiers.’
‘Well, that’s not a problem. Right?’
‘Yes.’
Viktor’s confidence made Logan smile, and he walked to the front of the army.
Then, he shouted loudly so everyone could hear him.
‘Listen, rebels inside the castle!’
Everyone on the battlefield, friends and enemies, looked at Logan.
‘Rebels inside! You fight for a dead king! Stop now! Throw down your weapons! If you don’t, you and your family will die! Surrender, and I will be merciful!’
This sudden call to give up made everyone surprised.
‘Of course, the nobles who caused Clavis to do this will be killed without mercy. Don’t listen to those who are going to die anyway. Put down your weapons and surrender, and you will live!’
Logan’s words were meant to make the soldiers doubt each other, and it caused confusion inside Zahid Castle.
And then…
‘That’s not true!’
Someone stood on the castle wall and shouted back.
‘Murderer! You killed the royal family! No one believes you, Logan McLaine! You are the real tyrant!’
His voice stopped the noise in Zahid Castle.
‘We will keep fighting to escape the tyrant and give His Highness Clavis his kingdom back!’
‘Uwaaaah!’
As soon as the middle-aged man with blue hair finished speaking, the soldiers shouted.
Logan looked at the man’s brown eyes from far away and smiled coldly.
‘That’s him. The strong knight who showed up first in the rebel army.’
Even though he wasn’t superhuman, strong knights were very important in Grandia, which wasn’t an empire.
Most of them were known to work for rich lords or noble families.
‘But this guy suddenly appeared with Clavis.’
At least this guy knows who is really behind all of this.
‘Let’s defeat Logan McLaine, the tyrant who is causing trouble in our country by using a fake king!’
Tch.
Logan listened to the man’s challenge and pulled out his sword, raising it high.
‘Those who surrender will live, and those who fight will die. I will show you the power of the tyrant you talk about!’
His powerful voice echoed across the battlefield.
‘I will crush you!!’
As Logan pointed his sword at the castle, stones that glowed red flew from McLaine’s camp and hit the castle walls.
‘Your Majesty, if you thought I would be defeated by the rebels because McLaine’s best soldiers weren’t here, you were wrong.’
Logan smiled as he watched the Liberatio stones destroy the castle walls.
Everyone in the kingdom had heard stories about McLaine’s weapons from the civil war.
They were weapons that allowed ordinary people to hurt knights or mages.
People who studied war said McLaine’s weapons could change how battles were fought forever.
But most people were more interested in the strong McLaine knights and Logan himself, who was famous for beating Jordan Valtermaine even without magic powers.
And there was also the mage Clayton.
Knights, heroes, and mages.
For over a thousand years, people had been interested in them without even thinking about it.
When Logan started giving out crossbows everywhere after the war, people paid even *more* attention to the knights and Logan.
Because anyone could get these crossbows, they didn’t seem so special anymore.
Also, there was another weapon called Liberatio. From the start, McLaine didn’t give it to many people. They said it was because the materials to make it were rare and hard to get, but that wasn’t really true.
People thought Liberatio wasn’t very good for attacking castles or fighting up close because it couldn’t shoot very far.
Of course, it had been a year since the civil war ended, so they had made it smaller and lighter. But it still had the same problems.
But McLaine had people who knew how to use it in amazing new ways.
Grrr.
The giant golem, about 3 meters tall, had a very strong right arm.
That strong right arm picked up some blue stones from the cart and threw them at the castle wall, aiming perfectly.
The golem threw the stones perfectly, aiming just right. The red-hot stones crashed into the castle wall where the soldiers were standing.
Wham!
Bang! Wham! Bang!
‘Kraaah!’
‘Wh-what is this!’
‘S-save me!’
A strange golem was throwing three bombs at once, hitting exactly where it wanted to.
And one person could control 50 of these golems.
‘Sir Clayton, you are truly amazing.’
‘Haha. The improved Liberatio and my golem army are better than five or six normal mages,’ Clayton said proudly to Logan.
A little sweat appeared on Clayton’s forehead from controlling the golems. But as long as they weren’t broken, this was easy work for him now.
He held a special staff called Kelahan’s Staff. This staff helped him control magic power, making it easier to use the golems.
It used to be Huan Douglas’s favorite weapon, and it was known as one of the best magical items.
‘Firepower greater than five or six mages, that’s for sure. It costs a lot of money, though.’
It cost a lot more than using magic scrolls, and Liberatio weapons were expensive too.
If Dwayne saw Liberatio being used up so quickly, he would be very worried.
But Clayton was smiling.
‘So what? It’s worth it.’
Looking at Clayton bragging about the destruction he was causing, Logan couldn’t see any sign of the peaceful mage he used to be.
Logan felt a little guilty for changing this good mage.
‘It’s necessary.’
This sight was worth it, so he felt okay about it.
‘And there are those kids too.’
Clayton looked at his students moving the golems.
The Golem Magic Tower became a famous symbol of McLaine’s power. They trained many new mages there, but only the students who were already learning magic were ready to fight in battles.
But they were enough.
Especially Clayton’s best students: Grik, Enan, and Truth. Their golems were now bigger and stronger than Clayton’s, showing off their amazing power.
Grik’s golem was even more impressive. It seemed to have changed its arms just for throwing, picking up four or five Liberatio stones in each hand and throwing them all at the same spot.
Kwaaaang!
‘Aaaargh!’
One attack was almost as strong as a 4th circle fire magic.
But the most noticeable was Victoria, a young teenager who was starting to look like a lady.
‘As expected, geniuses are different.’
She was holding Atlan’s staff and moving ten 2-meter-sized golems at the same time.
While the other knights’ golems threw many magic bombs, Lia’s golems only threw one at a time. But anyone could see that controlling ten golems at once to hit targets on the walls was much harder.
“Huh…!”
As Logan watched in admiration, Viktor, looking proud, chimed in to boast about his younger sister.
“My sister, Lia, just became a 4th Circle mage! And people say she’s even better at using magic than others at that level. Clayton is so proud, he says she’s a genius who will be famous forever!”
“I heard it too, you rascal.”
It was something to be proud of, even if he did scold him.
Lia reached the 4th Circle, which is a high level of magic power, at only sixteen.
Perhaps, no, certainly, she was a talent who would become another great mage.
Logan felt a renewed sense of reassurance and turned his gaze back to the battlefield.
The ramparts were already a scene of destruction from the golems’ magic bombs. The golems threw balls of magic energy called Liberatios.
‘We’ve already used up half of the Liberatios. This should be enough.’
The Liberatios, loaded onto dozens of wagons, were nearly half gone in an instant.
It was only natural, as the golem legion was consuming nearly 200 units with each volley.
Because of the magic bombs, soldiers on the walls were too scared to show themselves. They only screamed. Even the best enemy soldiers hid inside the walls.
‘There’s no need to waste any more resources.’
It was time to finish this quickly.
“Duke Luther!”
“I’m ready!”
Luther Kyle, who had been holding his beloved weapon for some time, replied in a booming voice.
“Let’s break down the gate first.”
“Alright. Then I’ll….”
“No, I’ll go first.”
“Haha. Very well.”
Luther, guessing Logan’s intentions, naturally stepped back.
And then…
“Try to stop me if you can!”
With a thunderous voice that drowned out even the explosions of the Liberatios, Logan, enveloped in golden light, dashed towards the castle like lightning. Golden light exploded around Logan, like a sun bursting from his body. It was so bright it hurt the eyes.
“It’s him!”
“The red hair!”
“He’s charging alone!”
The knights on the ramparts, desperately trying to maintain external visibility, shouted in unison, seemingly not noticing the giant running behind Logan.
As if in response, a rain of quarrels fired by the surviving soldiers poured down upon Logan as he charged.
But it was all in vain.
‘There’s no need to use Aura.’
Logan created a Force Blade, a sword made of golden magic energy. The golden Force Blade emanating from Logan’s sword formed a round shield in front of him.
Tap tap tap!
“A monster….”
“Stop him!”
“How is he doing that?!”
Logan, who was gifting the soldiers on the ramparts with screams of terror just by charging, grinned savagely and raised his sword.
Then, a golden beam of light, soaring over 30 meters, quickly took the shape of a massive sword.
And then…
“Collapse!!”
Craaaack.
The giant’s sword, much stronger than before, bisected the ramparts in one swift stroke, centered on the gate.
The iron bars prepared inside the gate, the knights waiting above it.
And even some of the knights preparing to charge from inside the gate.
“Hap!”
Not stopping there, the giant’s sword, swung again, completely destroyed the central ramparts, including the gate.
Rumble.
Craaaash!
The sight of a single human shattering the ramparts themselves.
All movement on the battlefield ceased at the spectacle of that unbelievable destruction. The air filled with the smell of smoke and burning stone. The screams of soldiers mixed with the loud booms of the magic bombs.
And after a moment, as the soaring dust settled…
“All of you, kneel! Those who resist will die, and those who surrender will live!”
At the roar of the red-haired monster scattering golden light, many soldiers, gripped by fear, dropped their weapons.
‘That damned monster!’
Richard, the blue-haired High-Ranking Knight, was also screaming inwardly. Richard’s hands were shaking as he watched Logan. His heart pounded in his chest, but he knew he had to act brave.
Even when he had futilely lost dozens of knights to the unbelievable long-range bombardment, he hadn’t felt this bleak.
He had heard that the man had defeated a Transcendent, but this was too much.
‘Swinging a Force Blade over 30 meters long. Who would believe that?!’
It would be more realistic to think that he was an Aura user.
He felt an overwhelming pressure, but he couldn’t back down here.
So, (Thinking to himself: *I’m terrified, but I can’t show it.*) he let out a shout that contradicted his true feelings.
“He’s just one person! Attack him!”
As he mounted his horse and drew his Force Blade…
“Now’s our chance!”
“Get a grip!”
His comrades, Derek Clang and Cooper Pearlson, responded and encouraged the troops with him.
“Waaah!”
The knights responded to the agitation of the command, who had no way to retreat.
It wasn’t because they were all fools.
The strength of a solid number gave them the courage to resist the overwhelming violence before them.
Even though it had been reduced somewhat by the bombardment and the massive Force Blade from before, the nearly 500 knights who remained had finished their mental preparation.
“Charge! Finish off Logan McLaine!”
Heeheehee.
As they charged over the collapsed ramparts…
“So, you all want to die?”
A cold voice was heard, and a golden light shone. Golden Aura, his powerful magical energy, surrounded Logan.
Wham!
Following that, with the sound of something exploding, the three High-Ranking Knights tumbled to the ground simultaneously.
“Keh, Keh-heuk. A, Aura?!”
“Cough! A Transcendent?”
“Impossible!”
The faces of the charging knights turned pale at the screams of the three High-Ranking Knights.
And then…
“Haha! Who said he was alone?!”
Wham!
The giant, who was now standing side by side with Logan, swung his war hammer, which was as big as his body, and sent the leading cavalry flying.
“Luther Kyle!”
“The Half-Giant!”
“They’re coming from behind, too!”
Behind them, about 50 knight-level golems created by the now-famous Golem Master were surging forward, and next to those golems, who had engaged in direct combat instead of throwing bombs, about 50 of McLaine’s knights were charging together.
And even the regular soldiers who had started moving far in the back.
It was an enormous burden for the rebel knights, whose soldiers blocking the front had collapsed.
“Those who resist will all die.”
Logan’s golden Aura, with a cold smile, loomed over the enemy knights like the touch of the Grim Reaper.
