Logan sat in the cold, dark prison cell. Days had passed, and he was still trapped. He clenched his fists, anger building inside him. Then, he heard footsteps. The King was coming again.
“Yes,” the King said, his voice loud in the small room. “Did your meeting with that man go well?”
Geomgong answered slowly, “Yes, it did.”
The King leaned forward, his face red and sweaty, his eyes wide and wild. “What did he say? Did he say sorry for what he did?”
There was no way Logan would say sorry for something he didn’t do.
Geomgong didn’t say anything, but the King understood. He scoffed and ground his teeth.
“Traitor! Just as I thought, he won’t admit it easily! Ha! Even with all the proof, he still lies!”
The proof the King talked about was poison found in his wine glass, a story from a dead assassin who said Logan paid him, and some other things that didn’t really prove anything.
‘And that assassin died after saying all that.’
Could he really believe such weak evidence?
How did things get this bad?
Geomgong felt a frustrated thought escape his lips. “I am sorry, Your Majesty, but if Logan wanted to kill you, you would be dead now.”
“Weren’t you there! He couldn’t do anything more because you were there!” the King shouted.
“Logan walked into prison himself. And even I cannot stop Logan from far away. Your Majesty, please think again.”
“Then what is it! Are you saying, like those stupid rumors in the streets, that I hurt myself?!”
His face was even redder now, his eyes bloodshot and pupils trembling. They were not the eyes of a sane man.
‘What on earth should I do?’ Geomgong thought, pounding his chest in frustration.
And that night.
Logan received a visit from someone he never expected.
Creak.
The metal bars of the prison cell opened slowly. Logan, who had been sitting and thinking, jumped up like lightning.
Soon, someone emerged from the darkness. It was Cleo. He looked thinner than Logan remembered, and his face was pale in the dim light of the prison. He stepped into the cell.
“I am sorry to meet you like this, Lord Logan,” Cleo said, bowing deeply. “I wanted to talk to you in a better place, but…”
“Who are you…?” Logan asked, his eyes narrowed.
Cleo bowed again. “I am Cleo Lieberman, Chief of the Inner Palace. I have seen Lord Logan from far away before.”
Cleo.
Logan knew who he was.
He was pretending not to know because this was strange.
‘Why is he here…?’
His master had said this man was helping the King to punish him.
But this…
“Is that so? But what is this? Does the Chief of the Inner Palace have the power to let prisoners go?” Logan asked sharply. “What are you planning?”
Logan’s sharp eyes looked past the open door and back at Cleo.
Cleo looked worried and waved his hands quickly. Then, with a strange, nervous smile, he pulled out a small key.
“Of course not. I just stole this key from the guards when they weren’t looking.”
The key looked old and fancy, and it had a faint blue glow. It was definitely real. It was the only key that could unlock the special chains Logan was wearing. These chains were made for people with powers.
But Logan didn’t move.
The chains that stopped power from flowing through his body and made it hard to move were nothing to Logan.
Unlike other people with powers, the chains were too weak to stop Logan’s power, which was strongest in his heart.
“You risked your job? For me?” Logan asked calmly.
Was Cleo surprised by Logan’s calm voice? His eyes flickered for a moment. He hurried on.
“Yes, that’s right. I didn’t want to see a hero like Lord Logan die for no reason.”
“Ha… You’re helping me for that reason?”
“I am just a common man, and so I admire heroes like Lord Logan even more,” Cleo said, his voice trembling slightly. “It seems His Majesty has made up his mind. This is all I can do.”
“His Majesty has made up his mind?”
“As someone who works for His Majesty, I have heard things. His Majesty is talking about executing you, Lord Logan. So, I felt I had to hurry.”
*Not what you wanted?* Logan thought. *Tsk.*
“If I wanted to leave, these bars couldn’t stop me. Go back. Thank you for thinking of me.”
“……Pardon?” Cleo looked confused.
“I trust my master. I will not become a traitor by taking your offer.”
Logan’s sharp eyes stared from the darkness. Cleo, looking thin and pale, took a step back.
Soon, the man bowed again, a complicated look on his face.
“Ah… I am sorry. I was foolish. I was too quick after hearing His Majesty’s words… But can Geomgong really stop His Majesty? That man who just follows the King’s orders?”
“Enough! If you’re not here to cause trouble, go back.”
Whatever Cleo wanted, Logan would not play along.
No, if Cleo wanted him to escape, he should stay here even more.
Logan thought this and was about to turn away.
“It’s a pity that someone praised so highly even in the Empire is treated like this in his own country,” Cleo said. “If you change your mind, please use this. I’ll leave it here.”
Logan glanced back and saw Cleo put something on the floor.
Next to the key, there was a thin leather object. It was a blueprint, drawn in careful lines on old leather. Logan could see the shapes of rooms and corridors, and tiny notes written beside them.
“It’s the map of the prison under the palace and the royal palace itself. The guard times are also marked, so use it if you need it.”
Cleo bowed again and hurried away. Logan watched him go, thinking hard.
‘He wants me to escape. I’ll become a traitor if I escape? Does he want me to fight the King? Why?’
It would be a fight in name only. The royal family was much stronger than the McLaine family now. For him to fight the King was like wanting the King to die.
Cleo’s visit changed how Logan saw him. He wasn’t just someone who flattered the King for power.
‘What is he really?’
Logan was even more curious about Cleo now.
What on earth was he?
Logan had to think about this all night.
‘What’s sure is I shouldn’t move now.’
The most important thing in tactics is not to do what the enemy wants.
If the enemy, whose plans are hidden, wants him to escape. Then he should stay.
Logan read the King’s order and shook his head. “I absolutely cannot agree to this.”
So, he became determined.
But the next day, something happened that made Logan forget his determination.
It all began with a note slipped under his food tray by a guard.
It was written in the Grandia Liberation Front’s code, prearranged with Damian.
“War, you say?”
“His father?”
Logan frowned, surprised, but the message below held even more startling news.
“What!?”
Surprising news.
But that wasn’t all.
“What is this…?”
Logan’s mind spun for a moment.
Someone very fast, who even a powerful magic user couldn’t catch, was trying to kidnap Hamar?
The unbelievable information stunned him.
And that wasn’t the end of it, either.
The moment he read that, Logan knew.
‘It’s the King’s doing.’
Only McLaine, Esperanza, and the royal family—they are not many people, but they are talented—could mobilize such resources in this country.
‘And the Royal Magic Tower, too.’
The following content only confirmed his suspicions.
A surge of anger.
‘Imprison me and shake McLaine? The King has no intention of letting this go.’
Logan couldn’t help but feel anxious.
And if there was talk of an execution date, his master wouldn’t do nothing either.
‘One last time, I’ll try to talk to him.’
With that resolve, he tried to calm his anxious heart.
That night.
As expected, his master came to see him again.
Logan leaned forward, his voice urgent. “Master,” he said, “what’s happening? I heard… is it true they’re talking about killing me soon?”
At the direct question, his master, looking tired, shook his head.
“Who told you that…? Ugh, yes, His Majesty’s opinion is very firm. But I’m trying to persuade him, so please, just wait a little longer.”
“Master, you could be more forceful, couldn’t you?”
“Forceful?” the Master repeated, his eyebrows raised.
“You mean… use the Esperanza Knights?” He shook his head quickly. “Logan, no! That would be going too far. I can’t force the King. It’s not right for someone like me to do that.”
Logan’s expression hardened at his master’s words, which felt particularly frustrating today.
“Just wait a little longer. I’m persuading His Majesty. Even if it’s delayed, nothing will happen to your safety. I guarantee it on my honor.”
At those words, Logan could only sigh and lower his head.
Yes. That was it.
His master was that kind of person.
“…Master, when do you think His Majesty will release me?”
“…If I persuade him well, it will happen.”
“Will he release me before I die?”
“Logan, that’s….”
“Face reality, Master. If you only try to persuade His Majesty with words, he will never let me go!”
“He’s not someone who can’t distinguish right from wrong, Logan.”
“No. I’m sorry, but it’s you who can’t distinguish right from wrong, Master.”
“Logan!!”
He flinched for a moment at his master’s angry voice, but he had no intention of backing down today.
“When someone believes something strongly, they think it’s true, even if it’s not. No matter what the truth is, even if others tell them, they won’t believe it. That’s how religion is, and that’s how ideology is.”
“Are you trying to lecture me….”
“Master, as soon as I am released from here, I will confine His Majesty. And I will monitor him closely to ensure he never interferes in politics again.”
“You villain!!!!”
– Ack!
The guard outside the iron door screamed as the aura user’s upper-level roar echoed through the underground prison.
But Logan, merely furrowing his brow slightly, stared straight at his master with blazing eyes.
“Is that what a subject should…!”
“That’s what everyone will think!!”
This time, Logan’s roar shook the underground prison.
He could sense the guard, who had fainted, only managing a faint groan, but this was no time to worry about their circumstances.
Logan stared at his master’s hardened expression with burning eyes, uttering each word carefully.
“That’s what everyone will think. They’ll consider it the bare minimum punishment. Logically speaking.”
“What awful….”
“Or there might be people who imagine me doing worse. Especially His Majesty.”
If he had his way, he really would.
Even though he omitted the last words, his master’s expression hardened even more.
“You, those words….”
“Yes. His Majesty must think that if I am released, he will be finished. And as such, he will never release me.”
“I….”
“Master. Face reality. I acknowledge the nobility of your beliefs, but they can never become reality!”
“Still, there is a duty to uphold….”
His master’s face, speaking in a faintly trembling voice, looked even more tired in an instant.
Logan’s heart ached at the sight, but he couldn’t back down here.
“I don’t know why His Majesty did such a thing. But it’s clear that His Majesty has made a final action that cannot be changed!!”
“Logan….”
“Yes. To put it bluntly, His Majesty cannot release me unless he wants to die. Look at reality, Master!”
The Sword Master’s face darkened heavily at Logan’s fierce urging.
The Master sighed, his face showing the struggle within him. He had served the King for years, but now… And now I hear terrible news… about Hamar… and the warehouse…
I believe you are safe. The conversation between Sword Master and the King is getting longer… (omitted) … The family is currently in a state of emergency, preparing for war, even considering rebellion if necessary.
And serious incidents have occurred in Taren and McLaine Town. There was an attempted kidnapping of Lord Hamar within Taren, and an attack on the Liberatio warehouse in the town.
Even though Clayton quickly noticed Lord Hamar’s absence, he barely managed to stop the kidnapping by standing on the walls. The identity of the escaped masked man, the ferocious beast, was never discovered.
Unfortunately, it was impossible to prevent the theft of over a hundred Liberatios. Some of the attackers were dealt with, but a few were knights of the highest caliber and 5-circle mages….
There is talk that the Young Lord’s execution date has been set. The Sword Master is opposing it, but the King is not yielding….
