The night was very quiet. The only sound was the wind outside.
Whoosh. Wind came in through a small gap in the window.
It felt like just a cold wind, but Logan felt something else. He whispered, “They’re here!”
Eileen nodded, looking unsure. Suddenly, two black daggers flashed into sight above her head.
Eileen’s eyes went wide with surprise.
CLANG!
Golden light burst from Logan and knocked the daggers away. The attackers disappeared again, like they were never there.
Even though she saw it, the invisibility was hard to believe.
“You can feel them coming! Use all your senses!” He shouted, trying to stay calm, but Logan was also worried.
Logan thought, ‘These attackers are strong, like Force Blade fighters… but they are not hurt by my aura?’ Usually, people like that would be badly hurt by his aura and unable to move. But these attackers were still invisible and fighting.
He guessed their black swords had some kind of special magic.
Something else bothered Logan. ‘Why is Viktor here?’ he wondered. Was this attack really from ghosts? Normally, simple guards would be outside, but tonight he had Viktor and Jorge, two of his best knights, guarding. If it was ghosts, normal knights wouldn’t be strong enough to help.
Even with all the noise, Viktor was slow to react. ‘Maybe he’s already been hurt?’ Logan thought with a bad feeling. He gritted his teeth as more daggers suddenly appeared around him.
WHAM!
He quickly focused again, trying hard to block the daggers. But before he could, a blue sword flashed and blocked all the daggers at once. It was Eileen’s sword, Frigus, which she loved.
She blocked them, but Eileen looked worried. “They’re strong,” she said, her voice serious.
It seemed blocking the aura was not just luck. Eileen was one of the strongest warriors, almost beyond human strength. Even she looked surprised after just blocking attacks from two assassins. And Logan thought, ‘These invisible attackers are fast, too.’
He could feel they were there, but he couldn’t see or hear them. Whether it was magic or a special fighting skill, they were very good at tricking the eyes.
He remembered stories from his past life about these kinds of attackers killing even the strongest warriors. Now it made sense.
But Logan thought, ‘I just need to use more power.’ He focused his senses, and suddenly he could feel everything around him for about 30 meters, even outside the bedroom walls.
It wasn’t as strong as his senses could be when he was sleeping, but it was still very wide. Even his teacher would be amazed.
Then, he felt Viktor outside the door, hiding. He was relieved Viktor wasn’t hurt yet. But then Logan thought, ‘With all this fighting, that fool is just standing there… Ah?!’ Just as he thought that, a thin line of golden light hit the bedroom wall.
Right away, the invisible wall around the room broke with a crash. Blue light flashed for a moment, and then they could hear crickets outside.
“Quick!” a strong voice shouted from the attackers, who still hadn’t screamed. “Your Majesty!”
At the same time, Viktor kicked the door open and ran in, holding his grey sword.
“You’re late, you fool! Attack them when they are open!” Viktor looked surprised for a second. But then a black dagger cut his armor from behind, making a long rip. He quickly focused and his eyes became sharp.
Logan thought quickly, ‘Viktor can handle two, Eileen can take three. The rest are mine.’ For most strong warriors, this would be very hard, but Logan knew exactly where all the attackers were.
Flash!
Snikt.
Logan’s golden whip of aura flew out and hit an enemy. It moved in a way no one could guess, making it as strong an attack as their invisibility.
Flash!
Snikt.
Pshhh!
Another enemy fell to the ground – dead. They still didn’t scream, but Logan could feel them moving faster and more wildly.
‘Good, they are making mistakes.’ Logan’s golden aura moved like a snake, and enemies started falling quickly, one after another.
But the attackers were still fighting hard. They suddenly moved apart, and black daggers flew from everywhere.
‘Ugh!?’
At the same time, a strange magic hit Logan, starting to hold him still. It was very strong magic, more powerful than he expected. Even though it only lasted a second, it stopped Logan from moving.
Then, black swords came out of the daggers and stabbed into Logan.
KAWAAANG!
“Huh?!” The attackers shouted for the first time, even though they hadn’t screamed when they were hit before.
Just as the swords were about to hit him, Logan’s aura, like a golden shield, suddenly covered his whole body. The five attackers were thrown back by the aura, losing their invisibility and stumbling into sight.
Now, the attackers finally showed signs of being hurt by his aura. Logan didn’t waste time. Flash! Poook. Tear. His golden aura blade twisted and turned, cutting through the necks of all five attackers.
“Keuh, Keuheuk.” Blood poured from one of the attackers. Suddenly, the feeling in the room changed.
“Gasp!” Eileen, who had been fighting hard against the three invisible attackers, felt the change as their attacks stopped.
The dangerous, killing feeling in the room was gone. Viktor felt it too.
“Tch! Your Majesty! They’re getting away…!” Eileen and Viktor thought they were escaping, but Logan felt something else.
“Not yet!!”
He felt the last five attackers nearby. They had given up fighting with weapons and were running at him with their bare hands.
They seemed desperate and no longer wanted to kill him, maybe they just wanted to end their lives. But Logan remembered what had happened to the first group of attackers a month before.
Whoosh!
Thud!
As fast as he thought it, his Whip Blade flashed gold. It moved in a circle, cutting through all five attackers at once.
Even before their bodies could swell and turn red, Logan roared,
“Get lost!”
He threw the bodies out the window.
Crash!
Rumble.
The explosions in the air were so powerful that the royal palace shook.
Watching, Aileen grabbed his sleeve, her hands shaking.
“Oh no… those terrible people…”
“It’s over now, Aileen. I won’t let anyone hurt you.”
Logan sighed, his face relaxing.
“Oh! Sorry to interrupt.”
Viktor had been staring at the King and Queen comforting each other. He realized they were in their nightclothes and turned away.
Logan felt a chill and turned his head. He saw a black dagger in the air.
It was a surprise attack, timed perfectly for when they thought they were safe.
Unlike the others, Logan couldn’t even sense this attacker coming. It was incredibly stealthy.
The dagger glowed with a faint black light, unlike the other attackers’ weapons. It flew from behind Aileen, aiming to hit both of them.
“Aura!”
His sword, Lux, sped up time. It was like his mind was clearer and more focused, and his power was growing.
A new source of power seemed to burst from within him, making him even stronger and more aware.
But this time, it was a mistake.
His mind and body were working too fast, too powerfully, and for a split second, they were not in perfect sync. His Whip Blade, which should have moved instantly, paused for a tiny moment.
That tiny pause was a problem.
He might live, but Aileen would die.
“No!!!!”
Logan’s face twisted in despair. Aileen saw the black dagger in his eyes.
It was right after they had survived a deadly attack.
Her nerves tightened, and she knew it was too late to do anything.
“No!”
As she thought she was about to die, memories rushed through her mind, like pictures flashing by.
She remembered something that had hurt her pride.
‘Are you worried about me?’ Aileen thought fiercely. ‘Me? I am Aileen of McLaine, a knight! I will not be a burden!’
If Logan hadn’t apologized right away, they would have had their first fight since their wedding.
He was worried about attacks, but she didn’t care.
She didn’t want to be her husband’s weakness.
She had wanted to be a knight, not just a noble lady.
She knew she was talented, and she didn’t like how women in Grandia were expected to be obedient and focus on homemaking.
People had laughed at her dreams of becoming a knight, until she met Logan. But she never gave up.
Even though she was a queen, she still felt the same.
Was this how it would end?
Becoming her husband’s weakness… and dying?
“Absolutely not!”
She refused to die such a shameful death.
Her determination unlocked her potential.
She went beyond her limits.
She remembered Logan’s words about finding her own strength. What did she truly believe in? What was she fighting for?
Her body and mind became one, showing her beliefs and goals.
I will not be broken.
I will not yield.
I will not become a weakness to my loved one.
In the end…
I will stand alone.
Her blue eyes shone.
Suddenly, a red Aura burst from her, changing her body and forming a shield all around her.
This powerful shield, which would become known as ‘The Indomitable Fortress,’ was her own unique strength.
It appeared for the first time.
Clang!
The black Aura hit the shield and bounced off.
The golden Aura exploded outwards, destroying the attacker completely.
Smash!
“Ugh. That startled me.”
Logan sighed in relief and hugged his wife tightly, amidst the destruction of the King’s bedroom.
He stepped back awkwardly, feeling the strong red Aura barrier.
“See? I told you I wouldn’t be a burden.”
Logan smiled and shook his head.
Then Viktor, who was late again, shouted,
“Your Majesty!”
He smiled awkwardly, realizing it was over.
The King was attacked.
Unlike the incident a month ago, this couldn’t be hidden.
The King’s bedroom was destroyed, and more than ten bodies were found.
The royal family announced that the King was seriously injured.
One of the attackers could use Aura. He was an assassin.
We only know one group that can use such people.
The announcement shocked everyone, even other countries.
They didn’t say who they meant, but it was clear they were talking about a group in the Empire to the west.
And one person in that Empire was very shocked.
