The night sky was very dark. You could hardly see any stars.
The bonfire crackled and popped, sending sparks dancing into the dark air. The orange light from the flames pushed back the shadows in a small clearing, making the trees around them look like dark giants.
“Come to think of it, is this the first time it’s just the two of us like this?”
Eileen asked. She had short brown hair and brown eyes, and she wore light leather armor. Logan, who was dressed similarly, turned to her.
“……It seems so.”
Logan had been looking at the night sky. He sighed softly.
“It would have been nice if there were more stars.”
“I like it just as it is, though.”
Eileen leaned her head on Logan’s shoulder by the fire. Logan smiled and nodded.
He was going to the battlefield with a clear goal. He was worried, but the starless night sky was beautiful. Maybe it was because Eileen was with him.
He felt emotional. His real feelings started to show.
“Have you ever thought that I might be pushing ahead with a reckless plan?”
“……You’re doing it all for the future, aren’t you?”
“But what if my ideas are wrong? They’ve gone wrong several times before.”
“This time, it’ll be alright.”
“Hmm?”
“Aside from having to match our hair and eye color exactly, it’s a convincing plan.”
He looked at his wife’s face. Even though the magic changed her face, making it look a little different, her words still gave him confidence.
“Even if I am a mage, I’m still an earth-attribute mage. I suppose it can’t be helped.”
He could change it to a different color, but Clayton said it would make the magic shorter.
“Hmm. Well, the fact that Duke Clayton created this new artifact is a great achievement, isn’t it?”
Eileen held up the identity plate she was carrying. The identity plate pulsed with a soft blue light, like a captured piece of the twilight sky. It looked like a simple token, but it was a transformation artifact created by Clayton.
“Yes. It’s a recent achievement, I hear.”
It was based on research logs from Ignis and Kraune, but he didn’t need to explain that.
‘What if that research log actually belongs to a group?’
He thought about the black snake symbol. Logan’s smile disappeared. His eyebrows drew together, and his jaw tightened. Eileen spoke suddenly.
“But I don’t like it very much.”
“Hmm? What is it?”
“It’s too ordinary. If you’re going to do it, give me a more handsome face.”
“Pfft!”
He chuckled. The face made for Eileen was ordinary, but it still had some of her features, making it refined. He knew she was trying to make him feel better, so he smiled.
“See?”
“Huh?”
“That face looks much better when you smile. I know we need to hurry, but at least for these few days, it’s just the two of us. Take it easy.”
He must have looked too serious. Logan’s face had also changed.
“……I’m sorry.”
“Stop saying you’re sorry, too.”
“Ah, that…….”
He chuckled.
“We’re enough as we are, aren’t we?”
Logan nodded at Eileen’s calm voice.
“Yes. More than enough.”
Others might think they were boring, but they were happy talking to each other. Logan kissed Eileen on the forehead, forgetting his worries for a moment.
Three days later.
“Is this the fork in the road? What a shame. From now on, you’re Gair from Liberty, right?”
Eileen’s voice was as low as Logan’s, because she had also changed her voice. Her long hair was now short, barely reaching her neck. Eileen’s transformation was complete.
“That’s right. You’re going to be Armored from Teronan.”
“……Take care.”
“You too.”
Logan watched his wife disappear down the road. He felt sorry for sending her to the battlefield. But this wasn’t a big war, and she was strong. She had defensive abilities, so he didn’t need to worry.
Logan didn’t follow her. He went down the path he had to take.
* * *
“I am Gair, recommended by Jordan Marlins.”
Two days later, Logan arrived in Rivers, the capital of the Kingdom of Liberty. He couldn’t just walk into the palace. So, Logan showed his silver aura.
“J, just a moment, please!”
The guards ran into the palace after seeing him cut steel like butter.
– A superhuman has arrived!
About 30 minutes later, a bald official who looked like Jordan Marlins came out to Logan.
“Huff. Huff. A, are you Gair? Minister Jordan Marlins is away. I’m Eric Greene.”
He knew why.
‘That’s why I came here.’
Even though he had changed his appearance, it would be bad if Jordan recognized him.
“I’m sorry, but could I see some proof?”
He had to prove who he was.
Logan gave him the jagged half of Jordan Marlins’ identity plate.
Clack.
Eric Greene took out the other piece and matched them. He smiled and bowed.
“Welcome to Liberty, Duke Gair.”
“Don’t mention it. I’m from Liberty myself.”
It was a lie, but Eric smiled even more. In less than an hour, Logan met the King of Liberty.
“Are you the reinforcements?”
The King, Logan, and a knight were in the office.
“Yes, Your Majesty. It is an honor to meet you.”
Logan nodded. The knight glared at him.
The knight put pressure on Logan.
– Kneel.
‘Is that Gunther Liberty?’
He seemed arrogant. Logan responded to the challenge.
Woo-oong.
Bzzzt!
The space between them crackled, creating a gust of wind. Gunther bowed to his king.
“He is almost on par with me.”
The King looked surprised. Logan was amused.
‘He’s at a similar level to Duke Luther now. Of course, that’s impressive, but….’
They were called the Big Three, but they were just part of the alliance. Gunther Liberty was the only superhuman in the country and a royal prince. He was at an intermediate level, but Logan was disappointed.
He realized the difference between the kingdom alliance and McLaine, and even the empire.
“Amazing. You look like you’re barely in your thirties.”
“Your Majesty, it’s just the appearance. He’s probably much older than he looks. Of course, even so…….”
Aura users look younger than they are. That’s because they become younger after reaching a certain level. But there is only one case in which they appear as young as a youth.
“……It means he reached that level in his thirties.”
“What? I can’t believe it. How could someone like you not be known?”
“That’s what I’m saying. I can now believe that McLaine’s power is great.”
Gunther now looked friendly. This was probably because Logan was Liberty’s reinforcement, but there was probably another reason.
‘He probably thinks I’m weaker than him.’
Woo-oong.
It wasn’t on purpose. Gair was emitting silver aura, which was barely at the intermediate level. Changing his aura color made him weaker, but it was necessary for the disguise. Only high-level aura users could do this.
– It’s not just a matter of color, I told you to focus on the essence and move the source, but you’ve completely changed the essence.
– It’s even more amazing that your body is still intact after doing that. Really, Your Majesty’s talent is……. Even his teacher was impressed. Logan was glad that his acting had worked.
“You flatter me. And until this war is over, I am from Liberty. Please don’t forget that fact.”
The King clapped his knees with joy.
“Of course, of course! If Gunther protects me and you go to the battlefield, the war will end much easier.”
‘I think it would be much easier if Sir Gunther himself went out.’
He couldn’t stop the King from protecting himself. Logan nodded, thinking he had made the right choice.
“Coming here, it doesn’t seem like the atmosphere is right for a war to break out right away. Can I know how things are going?”
“Ah, of course. I’ll tell you. Gunther.”
“Yes, Your Majesty. The current situation is…….”
The situation was as Logan, the Eyes of Fire, and Damian had predicted. The Big Three were demanding too much. The four countries in the alliance declared war. Everyone knew they would try to conquer more than just Tahiti.
However, there was one problem.
“The problem is that the Kingdom of Trias is delaying their troops.”
“Yes?”
“They’re making excuses, but they were the first to want war. They should be ready. But they aren’t. According to the informant, it seems to be true, which is even more of a problem.”
“What do you mean?”
“It seems they weren’t prepared, as if they were planning to wage war only with words.”
Logan’s eyes gleamed, but Gunther and the King didn’t notice.
“Anyway, Trias has now started to move, and the four countries are not properly uniting due to the situation in Tahiti, so the war will start soon.”
“We want to put you at the forefront of that war.”
Putting the reinforcements at the front was shameless, but it was different if the reinforcements were superhuman. Besides, it was what Logan wanted.
“I understand. I will do my best to end the war as quickly as possible.”
Logan said, hiding his true feelings. He was sent to the border where the war would begin just two days later.
