Logan left his father’s office. He walked down the hallway and saw someone he really didn’t want to see.
She felt the same way. As soon as they looked at each other, her face turned angry. She clearly showed she was not happy to see him.
Logan sighed quietly. He bowed, trying to look as respectful as possible, even though he didn’t feel it.
“It’s been a while, Mother.”
The woman stopped when he said that.
“…’Mother.’ It sounds so awkward coming from you, Firstborn.”
Her cold eyes stared at Logan. Her long, dark hair made her look even more mean.
This was Merian Kairos. She was Logan’s stepmother, Ronian’s real mother, and now, the head of the McLaine family.
She was no mere figurehead.
Merian made sure the Kairos family paid for more than half of everything the McLaine family needed.
Because of this, she was very powerful. She could control the whole McLaine family.
Also, she was against Logan. She had taken Ronian’s side, even though Ronian used to just follow Logan.
In his past life, she was the one who shouted loudest for him to be kicked out when something bad happened soon. Actually, it *will* happen soon.
However.
“It’s just a greeting, Mother.”
He hoped that if he acted differently now, maybe their relationship would get better slowly.
Logan bowed once more, hoping for the best.
He knew it wouldn’t get fixed quickly.
“You’re acting strange. What bad thing are you planning now?”
His stepmother’s reaction remained icy.
Logan didn’t say anything to her mean words. She laughed rudely and walked past him quickly.
Behind her walked Chief Butler Vector, her closest helper. He didn’t even look at Logan when Logan bowed quickly.
But he couldn’t completely ignore the Firstborn son of the family. So, he showed a little bit of politeness, even though he didn’t want to.
‘It’s all my fault.’
All of this was happening because of the bad things he had done in the past.
Logan watched his stepmother walk away, his eyes full of sadness. He turned around and sighed again, feeling defeated.
* * *
The Firstborn lost in a duel against the Younger.
The rumor spread through McLaine Castle like wildfire.
In any family of nobles or fighters, this would be big news. But it was even more important for the McLaine family.
A long time ago, the McLaine family almost lost their land and their noble name. This was because one ancestor had done bad things, and the lords before Patrick were not good leaders.
They only kept their family going because the current head, Patrick McLaine, became a very strong knight.
So, everyone was very interested in how well the children of the family could fight.
The fact that Ronian, the second son, was only fourteen made the rumors even bigger.
Some rumors said Ronian was a genius. Other rumors said Logan was useless.
Bad rumors about Logan spread very, very fast.
But Logan didn’t seem to mind. He was just busy packing his things in his room.
Actually, he was more annoyed by someone else who was worrying about it even more than he was.
“Oh, Master! What are we going to do, Master!”
“Don’t worry so much. It’s true, Ronian is very talented.”
“It’s not about Ronian. It’s about people saying you’re the biggest idiot ever… Ack! N-no, I didn’t mean to say that! It just slipped out…”
He chuckled. He laughed a little, without even meaning to.
“Don’t worry about it. If you worry about every small thing, you can’t do what you need to do.”
“So, you’re going away to train by yourself?”
“Yes.”
“…That just looks like you’re running away.”
Rick said one more thing.
‘Yes. This is how he was.’
Rick was his most loyal servant, and had been with him since they were kids. Rick talked too much and liked to interfere.
He did it because he cared about Logan.
In the past, when Logan was doing badly, he didn’t listen to Rick’s worries.
But now, Logan wasn’t going to ignore Rick like he used to.
‘Hoo, I owe this guy so much too.’
Logan sighed, paused his packing, and patted Rick on the shoulder.
“I’m not running away. Just trust me. I’ll make sure things are good for us from now on.”
In the past, Logan made Rick put drugs in Ronian’s food during their next fight. He even used poison to stop Ronian from moving.
Because of that, he lost his chance to be the family leader and was locked up for a long time, almost like being in prison.
Even though Logan started it all, he was only locked up. But Rick was killed for poisoning someone important in the family.
Even when Logan was at his worst in the past, he felt bad about what happened to Rick and couldn’t sleep.
He was lucky to be back in time, before he did those terrible things.
It would have been even better if he had come back sooner, but he was still thankful it was now.
‘Now, all I have to do is not do such stupid things. Still…’
Even though Logan had been bad, Rick had always helped him with everything.
He definitely wanted to take care of this guy.
He owed a lot to more people than just his brother and father.
However.
“…Did you eat something wrong?”
“Ahem.”
Yes, this guy definitely had a knack for asking for trouble…
“I won’t ask you to do unfair things anymore. And I’ll look after you as best as I can.”
“…I don’t know what you’re talking about, but I guess it’s good for me?”
“…Yes.”
He was a guy who couldn’t be serious.
“It’s a relief because you really seem to have changed.”
Rick grinned as he said that. Logan knew Rick was one of the few people he could really trust.
“Pack your bags quickly!”
“I’ve been doing it since earlier, but you’re just…”
Watching Rick grumble and move, Logan chuckled and wiped his sweat for a moment.
The sun was shining brightly outside, but Logan knew the future of their land was still dark.
He knew the rumors and plans didn’t matter right now.
“If I come back and show how strong I am, the rumors will change. And in a year, I need to focus on the war for our land.”
He knew he had to get through that disaster first before he could even think about the future.
‘Three months… I can do it. No, I have to.’
Logan’s red eyes looked towards the old family graveyard inside the castle walls. They were full of fire.
* * *
“But why train in the family graveyard?”
“I need a place where no one will come. And a wide space too.”
Logan had told Rick this before they left. The family graveyard was perfect because no one went there, and it was big.
Only MacLane’s family could go there. It was a wide, gentle hill, perfect for training because it was private.
Logan thought to himself, “If my plan works, I can’t show anyone this yet.”
Logan bowed to the family tablets in the shrine. He unpacked his bag. His heart beat fast with worry and excitement as he climbed the mountain.
“I can do it. I can do it.”
Logan got ready. He remembered the secret book he read one last time before coming up the mountain.
He was going to learn the secrets of the Divine Sword.
It didn’t start with sword fighting. First, he had to make a ball of special energy, called Force, inside his heart. This Force needed to go in a certain direction.
The idea was that the Force from his heart would spread through his blood and body. It would change his body.
But making this invisible energy of Force and putting it together was too hard for most people. Only very special people could do it.
Before, he would have been angry at just this first step.
“But now, it’s entirely possible.”
Because…
Whirr.
The energy was different now. It felt thicker, stronger, and heavier than the Force he knew before. It obeyed him right away when he thought about it.
Since he came back to this life, his Force felt like it had changed completely for the better in every way.
“This will do it.”
This new, different Force made Logan feel sure of himself.
Like he thought, the changed Force came together in his heart. It made a shape, just like the secret book said. It was even easier than he expected.
The Force gathered in one spot and quickly became a ball of energy, much faster and easier than he thought. It made a core right away.
As if it were the most natural thing in the world.
Whirr.
“Already?”
The secret book said even the best people needed three days and nights to do this. But he did it so easily, it felt like it couldn’t be true.
Logan was very confused by how fast he did it.
“How can this… hmm?”
Whirr.
Just as the Force became a core in his heart, even stronger energy burst out and went all through his body.
He couldn’t stop it. It felt like every part of his body was waking up.
Whoosh.
Was this how rice paddies felt when they received rainwater after a drought?
Logan felt so amazing with this new power, he forgot everything else. He went into a kind of dream.
Unaware that his body was shining with golden light, scattering light in all directions.
***
“Umm…?” Logan thought. “He started training when the sun came up, but now it was going down.”
As soon as he realized time had passed, the amazing feeling was gone. Logan suddenly felt very weak and fell to the ground.
“…Huh?”
Logan was weak for just a second. *Thump-thump.*
He made a fist. His hand felt strong. Energy rushed through his body. He knew his body was completely different now.
“More than I thought…”
Being stronger was good. Plus…
‘If the contents of the secret are true…’
Wham!
A smile spread across Logan’s face as he swung his sword roughly once.
The sword felt different, stronger, even when he just swung it a little.
‘Good!’ He made a fist without even thinking about it.
He knew it for sure, just from moving a little. It wasn’t just his strength. His whole body and how he felt things had changed a lot.
Everything had changed to make him better at using a sword.
‘This training that changes a person, Huaningong… it really works.’
He was sure of it. The weak, untalented boy who hated himself was gone.
“Hahaha!” All the bad feelings he had before were gone, completely gone.
From that day on, Logan trained with his sword all the time. He almost forgot to eat and sleep.
*** Three months later.
‘This time, I have to do it…’ Logan focused on the core in his heart, making the energy stronger, like the secret book said.
Making the core and changing his body with Force was amazing, but it was just the first, easiest secret of the Divine Sword.
The most important secrets were ten sword moves called ‘Time-Space Severance, Sigongcham’.
Logan was now trying to learn the first move, ‘Wave Cleaving, Parangcham’. It was the only move he could do with his one core of Force, his 1-star core.
‘…I have to succeed!’ He had tried this secret move for three months and failed every time, even with his new body and senses.
But failing so many times had helped him understand it little by little.
‘Now!’ Power rushed through his body, and golden light flashed from his red eyes.
“Taa!” Logan swung his sword fast as lightning. Golden light burst from the sword and flew forward in waves.
Wham! A thick tree, thicker than a human torso, was hit by two layers of golden waves and scattered into pieces with a boom.
Plop. Logan sat down hard, breathing heavily. “Haah… haah… heh…” He was pale and looked completely shocked at what he had just done.
The power was unbelievable. It only went about 1 meter from his sword, and it was just two waves of Force.
But someone who just learned to use Force should not be able to do this move.
Usually, only the best warriors, almost at the highest level, could do damage like this just by using Force.
Even though it made him very tired after just one use, it was an amazing secret weapon.
“Hehehe. Hahahahaha!” Logan had trained for three months. He had done even better than he planned.
