He was furious. Rumors were spreading, rumors that disrespected him. He wanted to explode with anger, but he couldn’t.
He was very powerful, with magic from the gods. But he still didn’t know how to become a true god.
Also, he felt even more thirsty for magical power now that he was almost a god.
If he tried to stop the bad rumors about him, the time he could stay in this world would be shorter.
So, he had to choose.
Option one: Leave humans behind and find a way to become a god somewhere else, maybe even in the land of demons.
Option two: Stay in this world, lose his god-like power, and become human again, with all the limits of being human.
But both choices felt like running away from the traitors.
If there is no path, then I will make one myself.
From then on, he encouraged people to worship the Nine Gods. This was because of what divine power really was.
Divine power is like seeds that the Nine Gods plant in the world. These seeds grow by using human potential, and then return to the gods as a much bigger reward.
He planned to become the leader of the faith himself, to take the reward that should go to the gods.
If he couldn’t do it alone, he would take the power of the traitors and become a god.
With this plan, he created the church of the Nine Gods.
For over a hundred years, his plan seemed to work. As the ‘Head Priest’, he ruled humanity. He was the most important person in the faith of the Nine Gods, and some even called him a god.
I thought I was finally getting the reward I deserved. He was enjoying the power he had finally gotten. He felt drunk on it. But he realized too late that he had underestimated the traitors, the gods.
He used divine power to live longer, but he didn’t use mana as much. Instead, he focused on using the ‘spirit’ of humans to gather divine power. He wanted to become more powerful than anyone, even the gods.
As he tried to become a god, he didn’t realize that his power was being taken away.
It was a big mistake.
He had almost everything ready for the ceremony to become a god. But just as he was about to start, the nine high priests who were helping him betrayed him. He had never imagined that his loyal followers would turn on him so suddenly.
But when he saw the faces of the betrayers, he knew why they had done it.
They were no longer my followers. They were people controlled by the ‘Apostles’. They were filled with the personalities of those disgusting traitors. They stabbed me in the back.
Of course, even if he had been focused on becoming a god, he was still very powerful. Normally, small pieces of gods from other worlds couldn’t have beaten him.
But it was different at that moment, because 90% of his power was being used for the ceremony.
Still, he was able to defeat all the ‘Apostles’.
But it cost him too much.
The god-power he had worked so hard to gather was lost. Most of the power that should have been mine disappeared. A chance that would be hard to get again was wasted.
Maybe the gods who made the ‘Apostles’ were also hurt badly. That was my only comfort.
So, he wanted it even more now.
The Apostles said something about blasphemy. It gave him a hint. My method was not wrong. If those guys hadn’t interfered, I could have become a much ‘stronger’ god than those traitors who became gods first.
But fighting the Apostles and the problems with the ceremony hurt him badly. That combination of reasons gave him a fatal wound that he could not heal.
And there was an even bigger problem.
The main members of the church have all died, so the church that I worked so hard to build will scatter, but it will come together again someday. And the gods will erase all traces of me.
Also, my name will be erased from human history. That is what the gods they serve want.
It meant he would truly disappear forever, not just die.
It was like saying that everything the Magic Saint Zibrick Cassel had done was worthless. It was a true destruction of his identity.
In fact, the story of Zibrick Cassel, the first demigod of the human race, was not found in any books.
It was strange, even though he was a demigod from a time a thousand years before the Great Migration. It was strange that the person who caused the Great Migration, a big event that happened a thousand years later, was not in any history books.
I didn’t want to disappear like that. I wanted to leave a chance. Even if it wasn’t me, the chance that someone else would become the strongest human, the god of the human race, and crush those traitors.
So, I am gathering the remaining god-power and my last strength to leave something behind for you, the one who is worthy. You will hear my voice and be able to take the power hidden in my legacy.
Flash!
Suddenly, there was a flash of pure white light.
After a long time, Logan realized he was standing alone in a pure white space. He was filled with so much new information from experiencing the life of a god-like person. It was hard for him to understand everything.
‘This is ridiculous…’
After sorting out his thoughts, Logan realized that he was still in an unknown space. He also noticed that someone was in front of him.
“Are you awake?”
Red hair, red eyes.
A man with a unique look that he had only seen in the direct descendants of McLaine.
A middle-aged man who looked like he might resemble him when he got older spoke to Logan.
Now Logan knew for sure who that man was.
“…Zibrick Cassel?”
“Yes, my descendant.”
“…Descendant?”
“Can’t you see? Look at me. If you have seen my thoughts, you will know that I am not lying.”
“…I suppose so.”
The man in his memory looked like this.
He had been so focused on the big events that he had forgotten what the person involved looked like.
“Red eyes and red hair, I made sure this special look would be passed down through my sons. Isn’t that the case with your family?”
Logan’s expression became serious.
It was true that this special look was always passed down to the direct male descendants of McLaine. It was a mystery. The family members sometimes joked that it might be a trace of ancient magic.
Of course, there were no special powers that could be called a legendary bloodline.
“…I am McLaine.”
“Your family name doesn’t matter. It is a magic passed down from my eldest son to the heir who will carry on the family. But if that is not possible, it is passed down to the closest bloodline. That appearance is proof that you can inherit my legacy.”
“Bloodline, you say?”
“You need both my blood and the right skills. In your past, you did not have the skills, so you could not hear my voice.”
“?!”
Logan was surprised.
“Why are you so surprised? A part of my soul has been with you before, in your past. The reason you are here now is that I took steps to make sure my power was not given to the wrong person.”
“Ah…!”
Logan exclaimed without thinking.
Zibrick Cassel, the soul of his ancestor, smiled as he looked at him.
“Does that not make you believe me?”
“Yes?”
“Even the Nine Gods can’t go back in time. But I used some of my god-power to bring you here. If I had gotten what I wanted, I would have become a god stronger than those traitors.”
Logan nodded slowly at the voice filled with anger.
‘But still,’ the voice said, ‘you, who were so terrible in your past life, are trying to take what is mine again. Good job.’ The voice continued, ‘Even if you changed everything, I still thought your brother would be the one to come to me, not you.’
Logan’s face became stiff. He didn’t mean for it to, but the next words made him feel like stone.
When Logan ran away with the Holy Sword in his past life, he always felt sad. He thought, ‘If Ronian had gotten the sword, maybe things would be better for our country and family.’ So, if what this soul was saying was true, Logan already knew this feeling. That wasn’t the problem for him now.
But as they talked, one very important question was still not answered.
“Doesn’t he know that my talent itself changed after I regressed? And what about the Divine Sword’s Secret Arts? What’s going on?”
Logan opened his mouth to ask, but before he could speak, his ancestor went on.
‘What does it matter now?’ the ancestor said. ‘Everything is good now. The power in the sword is much weaker than before, but take it. Find the Bracelet of Supremacy. If you find it, you will get my power and maybe even become a god.’
The Bracelet of Supremacy. Logan knew what that was, so he didn’t think much about it. But then the ancestor said something that shocked him.
“God…hood?” Logan repeated, surprised.
‘Yes,’ the ancestor said. ‘You could become a Great God. A god who can destroy even the fake gods.’
As Jibrick Cassel’s soul finished speaking, his shape started to disappear, like smoke in the wind. At the same time, a small ball of light, shining like a tiny sun, appeared in his hand.
‘If power hadn’t been used to send you back in time, this alone would make you as strong as a demigod,’ the ancestor said. ‘Too bad, but nothing can be done now. Even so, this will make you almost as powerful as a Grand Archmage. Take it.’
His words were very tempting.
Especially because Logan really thought that the Grand Archmage the ancestor was talking about was not from now.
But Logan didn’t ignore the bad feeling in his gut.
“Isn’t it all thanks to you, Ancestor? It was only possible because my talent itself changed after I regressed. I want to thank you. The swordsmanship passed down in the family was also outstanding.”
‘…It’s just what an ancestor should do,’ the ancestor said. ‘Don’t worry about it.’
But Logan realized something important: the ancestor didn’t know about the Divine Sword’s Secret Arts.
‘Why doesn’t he know?’ Logan thought. ‘I practiced it so many times right after I got the sword!’
It was very strange. Even though the light was fading, Logan thought he saw the ancestor look a little nervous. Logan became cautious.
“Is there anything I need to do in return for receiving this legacy?”
‘Not in this life,’ the ancestor said. ‘Just become a god. Destroy the traitors. And show everyone how great I, Jibrick Cassel, am. That’s all I ask.’ The anger in his voice sounded real, at least.
But Logan was already very suspicious. He wasn’t fooled by the temptation.
“How can I get back the power that was lost because of going back in time?” Logan asked. He tried to change the subject, but the ancestor’s soul stopped giving clear answers.
‘You will just know when you take this,’ the ancestor said. ‘My gift is that powerful.’
Even in the fading light, Logan could see the ancestor smile proudly. In that smile, Logan saw hints of the great hero he remembered from his life. But that made everything even *weirder*.
Even if it wasn’t on purpose, Jibrick Cassel had shown Logan too much. Logan hadn’t seen his whole life, but he remembered the most important moments very clearly, like he had been standing right there watching them happen.
In those memories, he was not this kind of person.
“To give everything to a descendant, you weren’t originally that kind of person, were you?”
Logan remembered his ancestor. He was someone who always thought he was the best, even as a child. He wanted to go beyond his limits because his pride was hurt. Just because of that, he left his people, even his family. Later, he cared about humans because he thought of them as his ‘possessions.’ He couldn’t just leave his possessions behind.
Logan also remembered the treasures that the nine gods – the ones Jibrick called traitors – had taken after the war with the Evil Dragon. Jibrick had shown Logan these memories too. But because Jibrick was only a demigod, he didn’t really understand these treasures as well as the gods did. So, he didn’t get anything from them. But still, Jibrick called the gods traitors, saying they hadn’t taught him about some special knowledge.
‘…Let’s just say he really hates those traitors,’ the ancestor mumbled.
Logan knew better. More than anything, Jibrick Cassel was someone who would do *anything* to get what he wanted. He was so greedy, he wanted to be a god, even if it hurt other races and he had to lie to people. Jibrick was greedy. He never gave anything away for free.
Also, Logan remembered something else. In the memories, Jibrick’s only child was his oldest son, who looked tired and sad. Logan had only seen him for a moment when Jibrick came out of hiding. Most people say having children is the best thing in life. But in Jibrick’s memories, family didn’t seem important at all. So, why would he give up everything just to help a family member?
Also, Logan felt something strange about the energy in the fading soul’s hand. It was on the palm, glowing weakly. He wasn’t sure if it was really divine power, or something else entirely. But he had a terrible feeling he knew what part of it was.
“Ancestor,” Logan said, his voice low and dangerous, “you don’t seem like the kind of person to leave revenge to someone else. Could it be… is the power you’re giving me… your soul itself?”
If Jibrick Cassel still had a body, he would have felt like a sharp knife had stabbed him in the heart. Logan saw the fading soul shake badly and become even weaker.
‘…Do you think you can just take power and become a god?’ the ancestor asked, his voice desperate.
“So,” Logan said, understanding dawning on him, “I have to take your soul, Ancestor.”
‘Yes,’ the ancestor whispered. ‘We will be together. But you will control the body.’
“And you will control the soul,” Logan finished, his voice grim.
Logan had done amazing things in this life, but even those things were nothing compared to the power of a demigod he had seen in Jibrick Cassel’s memories. He knew that real power, power to change the world, wasn’t just about physical strength. Could he, as he was now, fight against even a piece of a demigod’s soul?
‘No way,’ Logan thought, fear creeping into his heart.
The moment the ancestor saw Logan’s face become hard, a desperate voice rushed out of the soul’s mouth.
‘Don’t waste this amazing chance with silly doubts, descendant!’
The ancestor didn’t deny it. He didn’t even argue with these deadly words. He just changed the subject again. For some reason, Jibrick Cassel’s soul seemed unable to lie anymore.
‘I have to find his weakness, now,’ Logan thought, a cold smile spreading across his face. He remembered something he had ignored before, even though it was the most important memory. He remembered the terrible disaster Baros had caused in his past life. That memory came back to him now.
“The sacrifice you used to become a god…” Logan asked, his voice like ice, “was it… a human?”
The ancestor stayed silent.
