“They’re coming!”
Thud thud thud.
Stefan Royer looked at the huge army coming towards them. He gritted his teeth.
Stefan Royer had white hair and eyebrows, like snow. He looked very young for sixty years old. This was because he was an Aura User, someone with special inner power. People called him ‘Knight of the Holy Spirit’ because he seemed so pure and holy. He was always careful and paid attention to every detail.
Stefan had fought demons for more than half his life. He had faced danger many times. But now, he felt more despair than ever before.
But he couldn’t show it. He was the vice-commander of the Holy Knights, the best knight order in the land.
“Don’t panic. Wait for my orders!”
Stefan felt his soldiers looking at him. He tried to look confident. He stared at the back of the Western Second Army, which was charging towards them.
He saw a knight on a black horse that was bigger than any other horse. The knight had a huge axe-spear across his back and was slowly getting faster.
This was Miles Boykin, the general of the Empire’s Western Second Army. Stefan had to stop this superhuman at the North Gate.
‘They called him the Guillotine, right?’
Even from far away, Stefan could see that the giant was over two meters tall. Stefan could easily see why he was called the Guillotine, imagining him using that huge axe-spear.
The strong man would probably wait for the armies to fight and then attack any weak spot.
It was Stefan’s job to stop him.
As he thought about how to attack and defend, he suddenly felt the strong man looking up at the wall.
Stefan couldn’t see his eyes because of the helmet, but he was sure that the strong man was smiling inside his helmet.
‘People say he likes to cut off criminals’ heads. If that’s true, he’s crazy…’
…but he was a perfect commander for the battlefield.
Stefan watched him, feeling more and more worried. Then, he heard a voice from the eastern gate.
“May the Nine Gods protect us! Destroy the enemies of the Gods!”
It was the voice of the Holy Knights Commander, Sword of God, who was the only one higher in rank than Stefan.
The walls of Noviens were very wide. The voice should have been too quiet to hear from that distance. But Stefan was superhuman, so he heard it clearly.
So, even before the flag signal was given, he shouted loudly,
“Destroy the enemy!!!”
As soon as he said this, arrows rained down from the walls.
The soldiers of the Holy Army fired the arrows. The arrows didn’t fly in curves, but in straight lines, going through the enemy soldiers like beams of light.
“Uaargh!”
“Aack!”
“Advance! Advance!”
The magic barrier around Noviens city had a special power. It made arrows and crossbow bolts shot from inside the walls much stronger. This could be clearly seen on the battlefield.
Arrows from regular bows easily went through the armor of the Empire’s soldiers.
They also had about three hundred fast crossbows. They got these quickly from the ‘Maek’ traders. These crossbows were even more deadly.
“Curgh!”
“W-what is this!”
Some of the bolts from the fast crossbows even went through the armor of the knights who were charging. Several knights quickly fell off their horses.
‘Huh?’
Stefan was surprised by the power. But even though they had a good start, most of the thousands of knights in front kept going through the arrows and got close to the walls.
The knights in full armor bravely jumped off the walls and climbed up.
Seeing them, Stefan pointed to the priests behind the soldiers.
“Divine Barrier!”
“Divine Barrier!”
The knights on his left and right repeated the order, waving their flags quickly.
The priests heard the order and stepped forward together. They put their hands together and knelt in front of the walls.
It looked like they were going to kill themselves, but only for a moment.
Bright white light came from the priests’ bodies. The priests were standing evenly spaced, and soon a bright rounded shield covered the top of the wall. Magic power, which you normally cannot see, came from the priests’ bodies. This power became a real shield, protecting the wall.
This was another effect of the magic barrier: it made divine power stronger.
The Empire’s knights were about to climb the walls, but they crashed into the invisible barrier and fell back, confused.
The soldiers of the Holy Army saw this as a chance. They jumped out from behind the priests and stabbed the Empire’s knights with spears that glowed white.
“Die!”
“Divine punishment!”
Of course, not every soldier in the Holy Army was as strong as a mid-level knight. This was another effect of the barrier: it made weapons blessed with holy water stronger.
A regular spear wouldn’t become a divine weapon, but the glowing spears and the holy shield made the Holy Army soldiers feel very brave. This gave them a power that was stronger than normal.
Thwack.
“Aargh!”
“Curgh!”
“Blast!”
Some knights couldn’t balance themselves in the air. The soldiers stabbed them in important places with their spears.
The knights screamed and fell.
But there weren’t many of them.
And the soldiers’ bravery and the magic barrier alone couldn’t stop the few strong fighters.
“Ooh-rah! Get out of here!”
A strong knight was using a huge axe-spear like their commander.
The head of the axe-spear was bigger than the knight himself. It had a red glow, making the axe blade look more than twice its size.
This was a Force Blade, showing that he was a top-tier knight.
Stefan knew him right away.
‘Saxen Floe.’
His attack broke through the priests’ barrier and cut through the priests and five soldiers inside. He was one of the ten-thousand commanders of the Western Second Army.
“Aaaargh!”
“It’s breached!”
Blast it.
His hands were shaking, but he couldn’t move.
The strong man had reached the edge of the wall.
Stefan had to get ready for Miles’ movements below the wall. He couldn’t move from the center of the wall.
But behind Saxen Floe, the other four ten-thousand commanders of the Second Army also broke through the barrier and climbed onto the walls.
They divided and went to either end of the wall, showing off their power.
“Puhahaha!”
“Die, all of you!”
Blood sprayed everywhere, not in the center of the wall where Stefan was, but at either end.
Stefan’s face tightened.
‘Could they be…!?’
Several squad leaders of the Holy Knights charged forward together to stop them.
Red force flickered on their weapons, and holy light made their bodies stronger. But it seemed impossible to fight against a Force Blade.
And it was true.
“Aaaargh!”
As soon as they fought, one squad leader was already bleeding and falling.
Crack.
‘Blast it, blast it, blast it!!!!’
The Holy Knights were stronger than other knights of the same rank because they trained in both divine power and force. But they had fewer high-ranking fighters.
Also, most of the commanding knights of the Holy Knights, who could fight top-tier knights, were on the eastern wall, where the enemy’s main force was. This was a big problem.
Even with six or seven squad leaders fighting one ten-thousand commander, they could barely hold on, using the effects of the barrier.
‘How dare those bastards!’
Stefan also felt like rushing forward to attack the bad guys, but he kept watching Miles Boykin, the Guillotine.
He couldn’t move easily. If he moved to one side of the high walls, the enemy might attack the other side, and the defense would break down.
But Miles was gradually slowing down near the walls.
“Is this really…?”
It looked like both the many captains and Miles had planned this from the beginning.
Stefan’s eyebrows moved slightly.
“If that’s the case, then staying here is foolish.”
Many ideas came to Stefan’s mind, but seeing the enemy commander stop near the walls made him sure of his decision.
It was as if Miles was saying, “If you want to fight me, then come down here.”
“Aaargh!”
The scream made Stefan draw his sword.
“There’s no choice.”
But if he moved to one side, the Second Legion Commander would attack the other side.
Luckily, there was a way.
There was a reason why he was trusted with the North Gate, even with only a few strong paladins.
“Now is not the time to think about what might happen.”
Stefan gritted his teeth and raised his sword.
“God, give your power to this place!”
A bright white light burst from Stefan’s body.
Soon, a holy light spread from him, covering the entire north wall and beyond.
Oooooong.
The faces of the allies in the light brightened instantly.
Small wounds healed, their minds became clear, and they no longer felt tired. Even the paladins who were badly hurt started to look healthier and stood up again.
This was Stefan Royer, the Knight of the Holy Spirit’s power: ‘Blessing of Light’.
It was a very strong ability, more helpful than a magic sword on a battlefield where many soldiers were fighting.
“Uwaaaah!”
“God is with us!”
“Die!”
The squad leaders, who had been pushed back by the many captains, started to push the enemies back, but only for a short time.
“These crazy people are all going to die…!”
Meyer Hansen, called the Knight of the Iron Mace, was one of the many captains of the Second Legion. He shouted loudly, like thunder, and pushed back the paladins without stopping.
“You’re the one who’s going to die.”
Stefan said coldly as he stabbed Meyer Hansen in the neck.
“Do not retreat, everyone!”
He shouted bravely, holding up the captain’s head after quickly killing him.
But then, a giant knight with a red aura appeared on the opposite wall.
“Finally, you’re here!”
The giant knight, who had somehow climbed onto the wall, swung his axe-spear. A dozen knights and soldiers were cut in half.
“Aaaargh!”
“I-It’s a monster!”
“Kahaha!”
That son of a—!
Seeing this, Stefan became very angry and charged towards the giant knight.
The giant, ignoring the imperial knights in his way, grinned under his helmet.
“Well! I’ve been waiting, White Knight!”
The giant was standing on the bodies of many of his own soldiers.
“You bastard!”
Kwwaaaaaang!
“Hmph!”
“Heh!”
The giant axe-spear crashed into Stefan’s light, sharp sword.
Normally, the sword would be at a disadvantage, but this fight between superhumans didn’t follow the rules.
“Kuh, as expected…”
Miles Boykin, the Guillotine, was pushed back.
But he didn’t seem too worried.
“Kuk! Khahaha, you’re strong as expected. But how much longer can you keep this up?”
Stefan’s eyebrows moved slightly at those words.
It seemed that Miles knew about the biggest problem with his power, the Blessing of Light: it used up a lot of holy power and energy.
But Stefan’s voice didn’t waver as he replied.
“I’ll be fine until I kill you.”
“Is that so? Why don’t you try!”
Miles Boykin, the Guillotine, stayed on defense from then on, not as confident as his voice sounded.
He used his heavy body to block Stefan’s attacks with his armor and aura. He stopped any big attacks by swinging his giant axe-spear.
But he didn’t try to attack when he saw an opening.
He was trying to make the fight last longer.
‘They said he was crazy, but…’
He seemed different from what Stefan had heard.
Maybe being a legion commander in the Empire wasn’t just luck.
But Stefan was a proud paladin.
‘I will not fall before you die!’
The Blessing of Light was still using up his holy power and energy, but he was inside the barrier. His holy power was slowly coming back, so he was sure he wouldn’t collapse as easily as Miles thought.
Moreover.
– Sir Stefan. I put the weakest soldiers in the north on purpose. Only because I trust you… I’m sorry.
‘Yes. Have faith, Commander.’
Stefan remembered his commander bowing to him. The young commander had tried to give him the position because Stefan was older, even though Stefan didn’t have the skills. Stefan gritted his teeth again.
“I will not fall!!”
Miles was gradually being pushed back.
Miles’ eyes seemed to show surprise, as if he didn’t expect this.
And it wasn’t just them who felt that way.
“Help the Legion Commander!”
“Kill the White Knight!”
The many captains of the Second Legion ran towards their commander, fighting through the squad leader-level paladins.
“You bastards! We’ll take you on!”
The paladins tried to stop them, trying to get involved in the fight between the two superhumans, but Miles stopped his soldiers.
“Stop the others! I’m enough here!”
“This monstrous old man…!”
Stefan’s power was stronger than Miles Boykin had imagined. The Holy Kingdom’s sword was winning on the northern walls.
But the situation on the other walls wasn’t as good as in the north.
“S-Stop them!”
“Aaaargh!”
“There are too… many enemies!”
Screams came from all directions.
