A huge battle was happening, but it was hard to see, even for the brave knights.
The red sphere, created by a powerful warrior called the Sword Soul, blocked their view. The fight inside was like another world. These warriors were so strong, they had destroyed part of the battlefield.
Even though they were in a dangerous battle, some soldiers watched the fight in the red sphere. They knew one thing for sure.
A soldier watching thought, “This fight will end quickly.”
The red sphere was shrinking fast.
Inside it, the silver lightning flashes were slowing down.
Then, suddenly…
“Kwaaaang!”
A part of the wall, protected by a magical barrier, shattered. The red sphere disappeared completely.
The winner and loser were decided beneath the wall, not on it.
Triss coughed up blood and knelt on one knee.
“Hah, heh heh… You bloody bastard. In that short time…”
Harman stood before him, pale, with blood trickling from his mouth and his sword raised.
The entire Imperial army froze, surprised by what had happened.
“Understand that I can’t give you any space!”
Harman glared at the Imperial army and moved his sword, gritting his teeth. But Triss just smiled at the silver sword aimed at his neck.
“My choice was right after all.”
As if answering Triss’s words, another silver Aura Blade suddenly pierced Harman’s side.
“Not a chance!”
“Kwaaaang!”
Harman gritted his teeth and used the last of his strength. He saw the one-eyed knight being thrown back.
It was Jerome Dicaid.
Harman hadn’t noticed another Aura user getting so close because of the fierce battle with the Sword Soul.
Up to this point, it was still somewhat expected.
But…
“For the Empire!”
Harman saw four knights appear, speaking together as if they were one person. His eyes widened.
The sword-red energy blazing from their bodies was clearly Aura.
It was definitely Aura, but it felt strange and unsettling, as if it would break at any moment.
‘Not one, but five? Five Aura users coming, and I didn’t notice?’
If he had known, he wouldn’t have tried to finish things with the Sword Soul in such a risky battle.
“Sorry, Divine Sword. You’ll have to die here.”
Triss’s serious voice reached Harman’s ears. At the same time, sword-red energy and pure white light crashed together beneath the wall.
The clash of two superhumans representing their countries.
Surprisingly, Triss fell.
When Harman won, cheers came from the wall.
“The Captain defeated the Empire’s greatest swordsman!”
“We won!”
“Woooaaah!”
Some brave soldiers announced Harman’s victory. The other soldiers shouted, not really knowing what it meant.
Those who shouted in confusion were then surprised by their own words.
“Really!?”
“Aaaaargh!”
The soldiers’ spirits had been low because of the bad situation, but now their spirits rose. The result of one fight was changing the battlefield.
However, the strong fighters watching the duel were surprised by what happened next.
The silver light began to be pushed back by the sword-red Aura.
“No!”
“Captain!”
“Protect the Captain!!!”
The strong Holy Knights, including Vice-Captain Line Harper, jumped down from the wall like moths flying into a flame.
“Aaaaargh!”
“Es, escape……, Keuk.”
“Ca, Captain.”
The Holy Knights blocked Harman’s path and threw themselves into the wave of sword-red Aura.
“Yo, you bloody fools! Go back! I said go back!”
Blood flowed from Harman’s tight lips.
The sword-red Aura surrounded him, not allowing any escape. The Holy Knights kept jumping down from the wall to help him.
“Captain, esca……!”
Harman saw Vice-Captain Line Harper fall, clutching the sword in his chest. It hurt him deeply.
A very short gap appeared just before Harman was attacked, and a silver Aura Blade, slightly different from Harman’s, filled that gap.
“Kwaaaang!”
“Keuk!”
It was the fifth time during the short fight.
Harman resented Jerome for always filling the gaps so perfectly, as if he knew when they would appear.
Even then, his men kept jumping down from the wall.
“Captain!”
“For the Captain!”
The four knights who were killing them were strangely calm.
They showed no excitement, nor any emotion for the sacrifices.
‘Like dolls with no emotions at all…….’
They were strange guys with a creepy Aura, but they were strong fighters. Their swordsmanship felt like the Sword Soul’s, so they must have learned from him.
‘But why this strange feeling…….’
However, there was no time to think about it.
The Imperial soldiers ignored Harman and climbed the wall. The Holy Knights kept jumping down to save him.
‘This won’t do.’
The good feeling from defeating the Sword Soul was fading. The formation was breaking because his men were taking risks to save him.
It was time to take a chance.
“Hmph!”
Harman took a deep breath and charged towards the enemy camp, not the wall.
The Holy Knights were confused, but one of the four knights stepped forward to block him.
They didn’t panic at all.
‘They really are like dolls with skills programmed into them.’
How could an Aura user be a doll?
Aura power comes when your soul goes beyond its normal limits and your body obeys you completely. But now, Harman had to trust a feeling he wasn’t even sure about.
Harman saw the enemy’s red sword, glowing with Aura, coming straight for his chest. But Harman just lifted his own sword to attack. He only moved his body a little to the side, barely trying to dodge the blow aimed at his heart. He didn’t care about the attack, only about stabbing his enemy.
*Thud*. The enemy’s sword hit him. Pain shot through Harman’s chest, like a hot coal burning inside him. He gritted his teeth against the pain, but instead of falling back, he stepped even closer to his enemy.
His feeling was right! The enemy stopped moving. He looked surprised by Harman’s crazy move. He seemed to not know what to do next. That moment of doubt changed everything.
Harman’s sword went through the enemy’s chest and cut his body in two at the waist. *Crack!* The top half of the enemy’s body fell away from the bottom half. “!?” *Screech*. That sound showed the shock everyone felt.
The other three enemies, and even Jerome who was helping from behind, were surprised by Harman’s sudden, brave attack. They were slow to react. Actually, they looked really shocked, even stepping back a little.
‘This is my chance!’
Harman used his divine power to stop the enemy’s Aura from hurting him more and to stop the bleeding. He was so excited and full of energy, he didn’t even feel the pain anymore. Seeing a chance to escape, his body moved back quickly, like he was thrown backwards.
Then, suddenly. *Snap!* A hand grabbed Harman’s ankle!
“Ugh!?”
He looked down. It was the hand of the enemy he had just cut in half! Just the top part of the enemy’s body was left.
Harman stared in disbelief. How was this possible? Then, he heard a voice, even though the enemy was wearing a helmet.
“For the Emperor… Long live His Majesty!”
At the same moment, Jerome jumped back quickly. But the other three enemies ran towards Harman. Everything seemed to slow down.
‘What is happening?’
A terrible feeling of danger filled Harman’s mind.
The enemy’s torso, still gripping his ankle, exploded.
KABOOM!
Rumble!
The explosion was huge and sudden. Even soldiers far away on the ground below were thrown back. Then, three more explosions followed, one after another! *KABOOM! KABOOM! KABOOM!* The ground shook.
Dust and pieces of rock flew into the air, blocking out the sky. The ground cracked and broke, like an earthquake had hit. The Imperial army, which had been attacking fiercely, stopped at once. The explosions were so powerful, they stopped the whole battle at the eastern wall.
“…Wow,” Jerome said quietly, his face empty. Triss gave a sad, small smile, looking at the dust cloud.
“Yes,” Triss said. “They say each of these soldiers costs over 100 million gold. They are worth the price, for sure. It’s just too bad they are used only once and then thrown away.”
“One hundred million…” Jerome’s voice was barely a whisper, he was so shocked.
“How many more of these… things… does the Emperor have?”
“…I don’t know,” Triss answered. “But there can’t be many. Even though they are strong, they are used up quickly. Their lives become very short after they use Aura power. And they cost too much to make.”
*Power. Cost.* Jerome bit his lip. He hated how coldly Triss talked about human lives.
“Why? Does the idea of using lives bother you?”
“Ah, no, it doesn’t.”
“Don’t worry about it. And remember one thing.”
“Everything is…”
“For the Empire.”
“Yes.”
Triss smiled, happy with Jerome’s answer. He then turned to the dust cloud and bowed his head, like he was talking to someone. “Weapons made to block mind magic and using my sword skills… Weapons meant to catch the Archmage, the Truth-Swallowing Serpent… Divine Sword,” Triss said quietly, “you were a truly great warrior.”
Triss knew he couldn’t have beaten the Divine Sword with just swords alone. He had to use these other methods. Triss thought he would always remember the Divine Sword, and felt respect for him.
But then, as the dust started to clear, Triss saw something that made him uneasy. A beam of light shot up into the sky.
“What’s that?” Triss asked, frowning.
“Hmm?” Jerome wondered, looking too.
The light felt… holy. Triss suddenly remembered – he was fighting against the Holy Kingdom now. His face became stone hard. He yelled to his soldiers, “Charge now! Keep fighting!”
“B-but, sir,” one soldier stammered, “the ground is…”
“Cavalry, go around! Mages, fix the ground! We are taking the Holy City now!” Triss shouted, his voice loud across the battlefield.
As the Imperial army started to move again, a woman appeared in the light. She was beautiful, wearing a white hat and a long white robe. She floated in the air, right above the hole from the explosion.
A voice echoed, strange and powerful. “You are not to rest yet.”
At the same time, a beam of light shot up from the ground. In the light, a man rose up above the wall – was he alive or dead?
‘The Divine Sword!’
Triss’s eyes opened wide in shock.
“No! Soldiers, charge! Kill the Divine Sword!” Triss yelled, his voice booming. But as the Imperial knights and soldiers moved to attack, the woman and the Divine Sword’s body vanished over the wall.
‘The Saintess? Does the Saintess have this much power? Damn! Why didn’t we know this!? No, no. We are still stronger.’
Triss bit his lip, but pushed his soldiers forward.
“The Divine Sword can’t fight! Their leader is gone! Charge now!”
Triss thought his orders made sense. But then, a magical message arrived, stopping him. [Sir, the magic circle is failing faster than we thought. The Holy Law Barrier is also getting stronger again very quickly. Maybe we should wait and see what’s happening before we attack again.]
