Eileen reminded herself of her plan.
MacLane’s goal, not the Holy Legion’s, was to weaken the Empire’s superhumans.
Four more superhumans joined the other walls, besides the already strong north wall.
While Burdel was best at attacking weaker enemies, the others were different. Ronian and Viktor would join the Holy Knights’ vice-commanders to defeat the Empire’s legion commanders, then come straight here.
They just had to hold out until then.
The Indomitable Fortress was much stronger after the fight with Sword Spirit and was built for defense, so it should be enough.
Or so she thought.
Until she saw the Sword Spirit divide his sword and soul.
Skkk.
“Ugh!”
The faint aura at the tip of the Sword Soul’s sword pierced the Indomitable Fortress too easily, wounding her arm.
Considering the wounds Egon Miller had already caused, her limbs were covered in injuries. Even so, Eileen forced a smile, trying to look calm.
This was also within her predictions, the worst-case scenario.
“Impressive. You’re badly hurt, but you can still use the power of space.”
“Ho, you know about that too? A lass with such knowledge. Truly a pity….”
The Sword Soul answered calmly, subtly wiping sweat from his brow.
He was pretending to be relaxed to buy time, but his physical condition wasn’t normal.
That worried Eileen even more.
‘He said using the power of space takes a lot of energy. But….’
This man was different.
He used incredible power with just a tiny bit of his energy.
She knew skills varied, but this was too much.
– Now I can face the Sword Soul too.
She remembered her husband’s smiling face.
Did her husband know the Sword Soul was this strong?
Of course, her husband was clever and wouldn’t lose….
Her thoughts started to wander, but Eileen shook her head to clear her mind.
‘No, no. He’s weak now. I can end it here.’
Seeing her, the Sword Soul chuckled.
“Still haven’t decided?”
His gentle smile, like a kind old man, showed great confidence.
She could think about other things during the fight because the Sword Soul gave her openings while still attacking.
“Just tell me who you are and where you’re from. The Emperor values strong people like you. Join us, and you’ll have a great future. We don’t care if you’re a woman, talent is talent.”
Was he really confident, or was he hiding his weakness?
She couldn’t tell, but she was happy to buy time.
The Sword Soul couldn’t know she was waiting for her friends. If he knew, he wouldn’t be so relaxed.
Feeling better, Eileen smiled and said:
“Thank you for the Sword Soul’s kind offer. But I must refuse. I am Aran Esnel, a vice-commander candidate of the Holy Knights from the Holy Kingdom. I won’t surrender to God’s enemy.”
“Ha, from the Holy Kingdom? I’ll believe it if you show a little divine aura.”
“Sadly, the gods haven’t sent me a welcome basket yet.”
The Sword Soul laughed.
“Even a terrible villain who harms innocent children will receive a little divine power if they swear faith and match the wavelength.”
Wavelength?
“If you’re talented enough to awaken Force, you can match wavelengths with any of the nine gods. But the gods are ignoring talent like you?”
What was he talking about?
‘He’s describing the gods like trading merchants….’
Eileen was confused by his words and expressions, which she had never heard before.
Seeing her confusion, the Sword Soul chuckled again.
“So you really don’t know. You don’t even know how Holy Knights are born, but you say you’re from the Holy Kingdom? A vice-commander candidate? Hmph, a boring joke. Let’s stop now.”
He aimed his sword, and his killing intent rose again.
“This is my last offer. Tell me your affiliation and surrender. Why are you loyal to a homeland that sends superhumans to foreign battlefields while hiding their identities? Join the Empire. You won’t regret it.”
The Sword Soul seemed sincere, proud of the Empire and determined not to waste time.
The atmosphere around them was becoming more chaotic.
Eileen could see the Empire’s flags moving quickly in the rear, even though the battle on the eastern wall shouldn’t have changed.
Soon, she heard the sound she had been waiting for.
– Egon Miller has been defeated!
‘That’s it!’
She clenched her fist at the familiar voice.
Their expressions changed, and Eileen calmly shook her head.
“I refuse.”
“……Such a waste.”
Before he finished the word ‘waste,’ the Sword Soul appeared next to her as if he had teleported.
He slashed horizontally, creating a red line near her neck.
But the red light only grazed her head because she had already ducked, expecting his attack.
She immediately thrust her sword into his chest while ducked, a planned counterattack. But the Sword Soul simply stepped aside to let the sword miss.
Then, a series of dangerous attacks continued.
Pabababang.
Only the sound of air being hit was heard as the superhumans fought.
“Were you hiding your skills?”
The Sword Soul’s angry voice echoed through the red afterimages.
“I’ve simply changed my approach.”
Eileen replied calmly, but she was sweating a lot.
‘It’s so close. Focus!’
Against the power that split space, the Indomitable Fortress was like bare skin, at least until she reached the Sword Soul’s level.
Knowing she couldn’t avoid the strike, why bother blocking?
Eileen focused on dodging, only making small counterattacks.
The Feather Step, a movement style focused only on dodging, made her much faster than before.
Of course, she still couldn’t relax.
Even the small aura showed the Sword Soul’s condition wasn’t normal, and she was angry at herself for struggling to avoid his weak attacks.
Even that was becoming difficult. She was being cornered because she was trying not to fight directly against a stronger enemy.
Eileen gritted her teeth as she saw the sword flying towards her, reversing as if waiting for her to dodge. Ignoring defense, she thrust her sword towards the Sword Soul’s chest as if the red blade aiming for her neck was invisible.
A counterattack as if to die together.
Seeing that attack, the Sword Soul’s sword changed direction, and the two swords clashed for the first time.
Kwaaaang!
“Ugh!?”
Eileen was thrown back into the castle wall by the impact.
But she didn’t look upset. She had expected her sword to be destroyed or her arm to be cut off, so the collision was unexpected.
‘……There was a limit?’
He seemed to be using his highest power even while injured, but it seemed to be a bluff.
It was strange, but since the sword wounds were real, Eileen quickly understood the situation.
‘He could only do it with planned attacks!’
But he could only use this strong power in planned attacks. If something surprised him, his power became weaker because he was already tired.
The Sword Soul looked even paler after the collision.
On top of that, she heard the voices she had been waiting for.
“Your… Highness, Aran!”
“Aran!”
“We’re sorry we’re late!”
Eileen smiled as her three allies joined her.
“Ha, besides an archer, there’s another aura user and a mage? What are you people?”
The Sword Soul laughed weakly as he looked at them in disbelief.
He lowered his sword as if he had given up.
But Eileen wasn’t careless.
“Don’t fight his sword directly! We need to be flexible and change our tactics! We’ll catch the Sword Soul here!”
If they could defeat him here, the war would be much easier, both now and in the future.
They all agreed.
However, the Sword Soul was still a difficult opponent.
“Hehe, I should be saying that. Please don’t run away.”
Even with four superhumans in front of him, the Sword Soul’s killing intent only grew stronger.
‘With that body?’
He was clearly not in good shape. His aura was weak for the continent’s greatest swordsman, and his boast sounded sad.
But the Sword Soul’s eyes flashed, and he straightened his sword.
“I have to shorten my life a bit. The price….”
Whirr.
Red haze rose from his body, and a fiercely burning flame-like aura, red and orange like a wildfire, appeared.
“Will be your lives!”
“Hup!”
Victoria gasped, and powerful magic pressed down on him as Burdel shot a rain of arrows.
At the same time, Eileen and Ronian rushed towards the Sword Soul.
Kwaaaaang!
Part of the castle wall exploded with each step he took.
Victoria’s gravity magic was working, but the Sword Soul instantly appeared in front of Victoria and slashed down with his sword.
Victoria turned pale and instinctively used her magic.
Jjeooooeok!
A giant golem appeared, pushing her back and blocking the Sword Soul’s sword strike. No, it was split in two.
“Ack!”
Victoria screamed and slumped down, shocked by the golem splitting.
‘A golem?’
The Sword Soul seemed surprised by the unexpected situation.
It wasn’t just a stone doll. Even though he had cut it with the power of space, he felt strong resistance. A sword strike with normal aura would have been blocked.
In that moment, the arrows changed direction and flew in, and Eileen and Ronian suddenly reversed to cover his back.
Kwaaaaang!
The flame-shaped aura was halved, but the two superhumans were thrown out of the castle wall.
“This monster……!”
Burdel shot dozens of arrows like crazy, and Victoria, bleeding from her mouth, bound him with magic.
But the Sword Soul, believing in his aura shield, advanced and aimed for Victoria again.
In that short moment, a strange light flickered in his eyes.
‘Ho?’
The transformation magic broke due to the shock, and a girl with blue hair and red and blue eyes appeared.
Her unique appearance was striking, and the Sword Soul slowed down slightly, without realizing it, because she was much younger than he thought.
That saved Victoria.
“Hup!!”
Kwaaaaaang!
A gray aura suddenly struck his side.
It deflected his sword strike and halved his flame aura again.
“Brother!”
“Hold on!”
Viktor shouted and attacked the Sword Soul relentlessly.
A strange, bluish energy surrounded his entire body, crackling like static electricity.
