Demons attacked Viktor from all sides. He fought them off, but he was getting tired.
After fighting off the demons, the Saintess was very pale and tired. She spoke, using her last bit of holy power to give him a blessing.
She also told him that their friends on the eastern wall were in danger.
Viktor knew he had to hurry. He ran as fast as he could, even though he wasn’t sure about the Saintess’s blessing. He saved his brother’s life just in time.
How did she know?
The Saintess’s blessing was supposed to let him withstand any attack nine times over.
During the fight, the Sword Demon’s attacks never hit him directly. But Viktor could feel the Saintess’s blessing getting weaker.
It wasn’t that she was wrong, but…
This guy must be a monster.
Viktor gritted his teeth. The Sword Demon was pushing him back, even after Viktor’s surprise attack.
He thought he knew why.
He had felt this dangerous power before when fighting his lord – the power to cut through space itself.
His lord had to gather power for a long time to use that strike, but the Sword Demon was using it in every attack. Just blocking with his sword was enough to break the blessing from the deep sea.
If there was any good news…
A real Holy Knight, are you?
Even as the Sword Demon attacked, he seemed confused. The fiery energy around him was getting weaker.
This seemed to be because of Viktor’s surprise attack and his brother’s magic.
Just then, Ronian and Aileen, his allies, came back to the fight.
Hah!
Die!
They were excited and ready to fight.
The Sword Demon’s flames were fading, and his face was becoming hard.
Viktor felt confident.
I’ll defeat the Sword Demon here!
Viktor felt stronger, seeing his friends ready to fight with him.
But they weren’t the only ones thinking that way.
Master, watch out!
Ronian’s student yelled, his voice full of worry. He was too late to stop what was coming, and his words felt like cold water on Viktor’s hopes.
Jerome Dicaid!
Viktor knew that face.
Jerome’s silver energy blocked Ronian.
Also, a knight with a red spear jumped out from behind Aileen, attacking her.
Your Excellency, take cover!
His face was hidden by his helmet, but everyone knew who he was because of the red energy from his spear and his black armor.
Argent Tusat, Commander of the Western 5th Legion.
Even the legion commander, who should have been guarding the magic circle, was here.
But that was expected.
Bourdel!
Leave it to me!
They had to hide Lia’s face, but there was no time to worry about that. Luckily, Bourdel understood what to do when Viktor called his name.
Bourdel knew he couldn’t hurt the Sword Demon, so he shot arrows at the two new enemies.
Viktor turned his attention back to the Sword Demon. He focused completely, and it felt like time slowed down. He could see the Sword Demon’s flames getting weaker.
He also saw the Sword Demon’s face getting older.
The Sword Demon was showing a clear weakness, and Viktor wanted to take advantage of it.
I can do it!
Viktor trusted the Saintess’s blessing and his ability to heal quickly. He stopped defending and used his special move, the Root Severing, for the first time in battle.
Whoo-oong.
A ball of gray energy formed. It was a power that would destroy anything it touched. He shot it at the Sword Demon’s weak spot as the Demon swung his sword.
At the same time, Viktor saw Aileen and Ronian fire balls of orange and red energy at the Sword Demon. They had the same idea: they ignored the strong enemies blocking their way and attacked the Sword Demon.
The three of them put all their strength into the attack, not caring about their own safety. They all wanted the same thing.
Kill the Sword Demon here!
This was a great chance to defeat the Empire’s strongest warrior.
Definitely!
Viktor saw Jerome and Argent attacking Ronian and Aileen while they were open to attack, but he didn’t stop. Neither did Ronian or Aileen.
The Sword Demon moved his fading flame to his sword.
Then, he swung the sword in a wide circle. Time seemed to slow down, and Viktor saw that the Demon was moving strangely fast.
Kwaaaaang!
Eight strong warriors crashed together, and there was a huge explosion.
Rumble.
The walls of Noviens, which were very strong and protected by magic, shook as if there was an earthquake.
Ugh!
Ack!
Kugh!
The warriors screamed in pain as they were thrown in all directions.
Master!
Your Excellency!
Jerome and Argent, who were not badly hurt, ran to the Sword Demon, who was collapsing and throwing up blood. His face was as white as a ghost.
The Sword Demon was thrown away from the battlefield by the explosion.
He had a very serious wound, but he was still alive.
Th-this….
Viktor wanted to run over and hit him again with his sword, but he was too weak to move.
The other allies were in the same condition.
Viktor was badly hurt. His side was torn open, showing his bones and organs.
Aileen was covered in wounds and had a long cut on her stomach.
Ronian was in the worst condition. Jerome’s attack seemed to have cut his right shoulder all the way to his chest.
It was a wound that could kill him, and his eyes were fading.
B-Brother!
Victoria, who was in the best shape, screamed.
I, I’m okay, cough! Hngh, R-Ronian first.
Victoria watched her brother cough blood. Her face became even whiter, and she bit her lip hard.
Her magic held the Sword Spirit on the ground. “Just a little longer,” she thought. She felt she could end the monster’s life if she kept the spell going.
But her friends were hurt too badly.
Her brother’s deep wounds were starting to heal. The Queen was still standing, but she was swaying. They were hurt, but Ronian was in danger. He could die any second.
“Young Master!” she thought. It didn’t matter if he was a Count now, or even a giant. To her, Ronian was still the young master, her friend’s brother. She could not let him die. She would not let him die.
“Hold on, Young Master!” she shouted. She didn’t have time to think about what to say or if she was giving away her secret.
Victoria used all her magic, the magic that was holding the Sword Spirit, and sent it to Ronian. A wizard from a magic school might have used a proper healing spell. But Victoria could only cover Ronian’s wounds with her magic and try to make him stronger with what little magic she had left. It was a simple way to use magic, not really a spell at all.
Luckily, something inside Ronian reacted to Victoria’s strong magic. It stopped him from getting worse.
But then…
“I will remember this,” a voice said. “All of you. Remember this day.”
Victoria watched as a one-eyed giant helped his master stand. Another giant with a black spear watched Burdel, making sure no one followed as they ran away.
“Wooaaah!”
“We won!”
“Hooray!!”
Victoria’s group might feel bad, but for the Holy Kingdom, it was a great victory.
Because they lost their leaders, the Empire’s army stopped attacking that day.
“The danger is over,” said the old priest. “You are all very strong. If you rest, you will be fine in a few months.”
The group all sighed in relief when they heard this.
The important people of the Holy Kingdom watched them and smiled. Ronian was still very pale and couldn’t open his eyes, but most of the group were getting help for their bad injuries. The room looked like a hospital room.
Even though they were hurt, they cared about each other. It was nice to see. But Burdel was different.
“Is it just me?” he thought. Burdel had fought harder than anyone and done a lot, but he felt like he hadn’t done enough.
Eileen tried to comfort Burdel. “Sir… Amil,” she said, a little embarrassed. “Please rest too. You did a lot. The Empire’s army probably won’t attack again soon.”
Aran was pale too. He scratched his head when Eileen spoke. ‘My honor as a knight…’ he thought. The lord’s wife, his younger brother, even Victoria, who was not as strong as a fighter, were all badly hurt inside. Everyone he was supposed to protect was hurt worse than him. He felt ashamed as a knight.
Viktor looked about the same as Burdel. But Viktor healed fast because of his special power. He was actually hurt very badly at first. Even now, he was still pale. His special power couldn’t fix everything. He felt guilty for some reason, even though it wasn’t his fault.
Burdel just stared ahead, not knowing what to do. Then, someone unexpected came to help.
*Creak.* An old door opened. The Sword Saint walked in and bowed deeply to them.
“Thank you for your hard work and what you gave up,” the Sword Saint said. Everyone’s eyes opened wide. Then Harmon said something even more surprising.
“I, Harmon, was going to run away with the Saintess and the Pope. You have made me ashamed.”
“Commander!”
“Your Excellency, why are you saying this!” The important priests in the room were confused, but Harmon kept his head bowed and didn’t move.
“Thank you again,” Harmon said. “Because you fought so bravely, the Holy Kingdom has another chance. I am very, very thankful.” His honest words made the room quiet.
Eileen spoke, breaking the silence. “You came after you checked what happened after the battle, right? What are the results, Commander?”
“One thousand of our knights died, and about 500 were badly hurt. Almost ten thousand soldiers from the Holy Army were hurt or killed. But…” Harmon paused, looked around the room, then smiled and said, “The Empire lost at least three times as many.”
“Yes!” Everyone’s faces brightened. Burdel, without thinking, made a fist and shouted. He blushed when he realized everyone was looking at him.
Eileen smiled and asked again, “What about the superhumans?”
“Egon Miller, the commander of the Empire’s 1st Western Army, and Malton Heights, the commander of the 3rd Army, are dead. Miles Boykin, the commander of the 2nd Army, and Orlando Brown, the commander of the 4th Army, were seriously injured and retreated.”
“Oh!”
“A complete victory!”
“As expected!” Even amidst the exclamations, Eileen, who had been calm, immediately asked about the whereabouts of the most important person.
“What about the Sword Spirit?”
“We haven’t seen him,” Harmon said. “But from what we hear from the enemy camp, he’s probably not dead.”
When they heard that, the group sighed again. Harmon saw their sad faces and chuckled, shaking his head. ‘Do they not know how big of a win this is?’ he thought.
Noviens felt like a party right now. People were trying to forget the sadness of death by celebrating the victory. This showed how important this win was for the Holy Kingdom. But the people who won the battle were sad. That made everyone appreciate them even more. The war was not over yet.
“The Empire, the Emperor, will not give up easily,” Harmon said. “Now they know you are here, they will send even stronger armies. Please help us again.”
He thought, ‘Five armies, a magic group, even eight superhumans. The Sword Spirit and Cutting Wind were among them, the best superhumans from the Empire. The Empire spent so much and still lost. They won’t stop now. Next time, they might send forces strong enough to destroy the Holy Kingdom completely, maybe even those five new superhumans.’
“Maybe the Emperor will send his best army next,” Harmon thought. “Even if I am fully healed, I am just one person. I can’t fight all those strong armies coming to Noviens.” That’s why Harmon really needed their help. But Eileen, no, Aran, shook his head sadly.
“I’m sorry,” Aran said. “We can’t.”
