Excitement filled the air in Kyle as King Logan and his knights entered the city through the east gate. People cheered loudly.
“Long live the King!” they shouted.
“Long live McLaine!”
“Crush the Empire!”
“Yeah!”
The citizens of Kyle welcomed the King and his knights with loud and excited cheers.
A woman in the crowd asked, “Is that really His Majesty?”
Another person exclaimed, “The Queen beside him is so beautiful, too.”
A child pointed and shouted, “And the knights as well!”
King Logan’s visit was a beacon of hope for the people of Kyle during this time of crisis.
Everyone thought, *If the King is here, we must have a chance to win.*
People were worried about the war news. So, they were very happy to see the King and his group. They welcomed them with even more excitement.
Logan smiled and waved to the crowd. *This show of strength is important,* he thought. *It will give people hope.*
Logan, at the front of the procession, smiled and looked to his side. He saw his wife struggling to smile.
It was a sad sight, but he understood. Now that the self-defense forces from the midwest were gathered in Kyle, boosting the morale of the citizens would directly increase their fighting power.
*Just bear with it a little longer,* he thought.
When he looked at his wife, a real smile appeared on his face. He kept looking at her to make his performance seem more natural.
After a tiring march, Logan finally reached the inner castle.
“Phew, that was very tiring,” Logan said.
Jorge bowed his head and replied, “You’ve worked hard, Your Majesty.”
Logan offered Jorge a glass of water. “You’ve suffered as well,” he said with a smile.
“Aren’t you worried?” Logan asked.
“Pardon?” Jorge responded.
“We’ve sent the 4th and 5th Legions and the Kingdom Alliance’s reinforcements to the northern and southern fortresses. Only the self-defense forces have been summoned here. Aren’t you worried?” Logan clarified.
Some people still doubted the self-defense forces. They thought these normal citizens were not real soldiers. Also, the news about the five new powerful warriors—Eileen, Ronian, Viktor, Bourdel, and Victoria—had not been announced yet.
This was enough to make anyone worried.
However…
Jorge answered without hesitation, “How could I be? With Your Majesty here.”
Jorge, the top-tier knight and former lieutenant of Wicken Kallias, spoke with confidence.
Then, someone cleared their throat behind him.
A giant with a scar from his right forehead to above his left lip twitched. Beside him, a beautiful girl fanned herself, looking away as if embarrassed.
Logan chuckled at Jorge’s words. “Haha, of course, it’s also because we have the mages of the Golem Magic Tower and the magic corps to rely on.”
“It was decided because Kyle Castle can hold many more soldiers than the new fortresses, as you might have guessed,” Logan explained.
The northern fortress, Shield, is protected by the 2nd and 4th Legions, as well as Liberty’s forces. The powerful warriors there include the Sword Master, Bourdel, Luther Kyle, and Liberty’s Archduke, Gunter Liberty.
In the southern fortress, Armor, the 3rd and 5th Legions, along with Teronan’s forces, will work together to stop the Imperial Army. The powerful warriors include Ronian, Viktor, Wicken Kallias, Teronan’s Iron Wall, Latin Lorence, and the mage Gustav Klement.
Since Armor lacked powerful fighters like the Master or himself, ‘Tyr’ followed Ronian.
Otherwise, the ghostly figures that appeared in the training grounds would have been torn to pieces by Tyr as soon as they entered the palace.
*Peaceful. Boring.*
Judging from Tyr’s report, the southern fortress was still quiet.
*It’ll start here, though,* Logan thought.
Here at Kyle Castle, which will likely be the first battlefield, the 1st Legion, the magic corps, and nearly 300,000 self-defense forces will fight together.
*The powerful warriors are me, Eileen, Clayton, and Victoria,* Logan thought.
The remaining 200,000 self-defense forces will protect the kingdom during the war.
This troop deployment used all of the kingdom’s forces and concentrated them in three castles. All of this plan was based on information from the King from the East, Sabeokwang, and the advice of his close aides. He told us where the Empire’s strongest warriors were, and we tried to balance the forces as much as possible.
Because of the large size of the self-defense forces and the magic corps, it seemed like there were too many troops at Kyle Castle.
*There’s the Sword Soul and the Mage of the Frozen Gale. Also, we don’t know anything about the elite troops of the Imperial Central Army. So, even though they have fewer soldiers than the forces in the north and south, their fighting power might be stronger,* Logan thought.
Damian’s opinion made sense, so the troop deployment was completed this way.
Of course, there was one big problem with this plan.
“What about the self-defense force training?” Logan asked.
“We are doing it as you instructed. They are learning quickly,” Jorge replied.
“Is that so?” Logan asked.
“The training period is short, but your instructions were so simple that there shouldn’t be any problems. But, I don’t know what will happen in a real battle,” Jorge admitted.
“We have to accept that,” Logan said.
He wasn’t asking them to do anything new or difficult. It was just basic training for battle, like formation drills to keep them from disrupting the ranks and training to retreat behind the walls when the enemy climbed over them.
The self-defense forces from the McLaine region were just regular people who had only trained with repeating crossbows. They had never trained for a large battle. They would be useful when the enemies were outside the castle, but in a close fight, they would be cannon fodder.
Logan’s instructions were meant to reduce this weakness. They were just guidelines that were hardly worth calling training.
“What about the weapons?” Logan inquired.
“Magazines and Liberatios are being produced very quickly. Taren’s magic workshop said they would send half of their production here first,” Jorge answered.
“Very quickly?” Logan asked, surprised.
“Yes. If they had produced this much sooner…” Jorge trailed off.
Jorge smirked and continued, “There are rumors that the dwarves are screaming in the magic workshop, Your Majesty.”
An unexpected voice interrupted, “Duke Clayton?”
“I just stopped by for a moment. That friend Hamar is working so hard that he is half-conscious. He says he has to protect ‘his country.’ At least for a while, there won’t be a shortage of weapons they will use in battle,” Clayton explained.
“That Hamar?” Logan asked, surprised. “That dwarf is working hard without anyone telling him to? It’s hard to believe.”
*Well, the more the better,* Logan thought.
He was speechless for a moment at the unbelievable thing, but Logan moved on. He couldn’t complain about small things when everything else was going well.
“What’s the position of the Imperial Army?” Logan asked.
“They should be within sight in three days,” Jorge replied.
“The information is still accurate,” Logan said.
Logan thought about the King from the East again.
*Is he really planning to betray the Empire? Sabeokwang?* Logan wondered.
Considering his position and his constant grin, it was hard to trust him. But so far, the information he had provided had been correct.
“Yes. So, how about we carry out the plan you mentioned earlier, even now?” Jorge suggested.
“Cutting off the Empire’s supply lines?” Jorge asked, his eyes bright.
“Yes,” Logan replied.
Jorge’s eyes were serious as he spoke. The information provided by King Dongik included detailed routes of the Imperial Army’s supply lines.
However, they had already talked about this plan right after the Empire declared war, but they stopped because of a problem they couldn’t overcome.
“The supplies moving with the legions are enough to sustain several days of battle. But if we split our forces to strike at the Empire’s rear, can we truly defend the castle?”
In wars like this, the most important fights are between powerful warriors. We call them knights and wizards, or Aura users and mages. These are like super-soldiers. The battle is often decided when one side wins these big fights.
Unless both sides are very careful and don’t want to lose too many of these powerful warriors, like in a long war he remembered from before, it was very rare for a war in a single castle to last for weeks.
“A few days if we do our best……”
“Also, we have used all our soldiers for this war, but the Empire hasn’t. The same goes for resources. Even if we cut off their supply lines, how long can we keep fighting like that?”
“……”
“And above all, the biggest problem is that we still can’t fully trust the spy’s information. It has been right until now, but we don’t know if it will stay that way.”
Spies can lie at any time, even when you trust them a lot. McLain knew he had to be very careful.
Jorge’s face flushed red at the sharp criticism.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t think it through……”
“That’s what I got told off for.”
Logan interrupted Jorge with a sulky expression.
“……Pardon?”
“I’m saying that’s exactly what I argued, and Damian gave me a right telling-off for it. Said I wasn’t thinking. So, welcome to the club.”
“……Pardon?”
“Haha!”
A clear laugh erupted from behind the awkwardly smiling Jorge, drawing everyone’s attention.
Victoria, her face flushed, covered her mouth and bowed her head. This time, Damian, her master, looked down at his disciple with a pathetic expression before quickly bowing his head towards Logan.
“I apologize, Your Majesty.”
Pfft.
“It’s fine. I find it amusing. Ah, Lord Jorge, don’t be too discouraged. If you have any ideas, speak up anytime. Opinions that benefit the country are always welcome. Surely, you’re not upset that I’m at the same level as you, are you?”
“……Of course not, Your Majesty. I am honored, rather.”
Jorge smiled and bowed his head at the King’s kindness.
“……Your way of handling people has become very gentle. That was a wonderful consideration, Your Majesty.”
Clayton, who had followed him as he left the office to inspect the castle walls, said with a pleased smile. It was a warm and knowing smile.
Logan looked at him with bewildered eyes.
“Consideration?”
“Consideration to maintain Lord Jorge’s morale…… wasn’t it?”
“Ah……? Ah! Yes, that’s right. Consideration. Haha, indeed. Shouldn’t people always be growing? We can’t always manage people with scolding or force, haha.”
Logan answered with a smile, but the initial silence had been too long.
‘He was serious!?’
Clayton was ashamed of himself for having briefly felt happy at the young monarch’s growth.
But even as he thought that, his honest and simple nature felt like a charm of this young monarch, and he unknowingly chuckled.
‘I’m completely charmed.’
At first, it was just to secure a patron and settle down for the sake of his disciples’ future and a stable income.
But how did that connection lead to this?
Perhaps because they were on the verge of a great war, Clayton was feeling emotional when he shouldn’t, and the young monarch seemed to have misunderstood his laughter.
“I’m serious, you know? It was all to give Jorge a laugh out of consideration for him.”
……Let’s just say that.
Clayton could only force a smile with a deflated sigh, his shoulders slumping slightly.
Three days later.
Fortunately or unfortunately, the Imperial Army began to appear exactly on schedule.
“Oh, they’re coming!”
“It’s the Imperial Army!”
“Emergency!”
The morale of Kyle Castle, which had soared with the King’s personal visit, began to gradually sink the moment the Imperial Army’s banners came into view across the fields.
The armor gleamed in silver, an intimidating sight, and the weapons shone brilliantly, a menacing shine.
The troops, bearing golden dragon emblems on their chests or shields, numbered over 150,000, yet showed not a single sign of mess. The knights and soldiers at the very front maintained perfect formations, advancing at a constant pace, giving off a feeling of unstoppable power.
“What are those strange things?”
“It’s unsettling……”
Murmur murmur.
The ordinary soldiers expressed their unease with discomfort, but those with even a little military knowledge could not help but pale.
‘How can such a massive force move as one, breathing in unison, like a machine?’
Logan, too, could not help but pale at the movement that inspired even a chilling dread. He felt a mix of fear and determination.
“That is the Imperial Central Army……”
The true elites of the Empire, who had not appeared in a war he remembered from before.
“An astonishing amount of training. No, I doubt if that’s even possible with training.”
“That is the enemy we must face.”
“Yes. We are also well-prepared.”
“Yes, indeed.”
At Jorge’s words, Logan took a deep breath.
There was no turning back now anyway.
No, perhaps this was the moment he had been waiting for.
‘Finally……’
The turning point that had destroyed his family and ruined his country in his past life.
The disaster that had trapped him in a bad life.
The opportunity to overcome that disaster with his own hands had come.
Logan felt his heart pounding so hard he couldn’t understand it himself, and he gripped the castle wall with trembling hands.
Crack!
The castle wall, unable to withstand the pressure, crumbled in his hand.
By now, the Imperial Army had approached the front and reorganized its formation.
Watching that sight, Logan poured the complex emotions boiling within him – fear, anger, and determination – into a powerful shout.
“I, Logan McLain, King of McLain, challenge Tris Hornsby, the Empire’s Greatest Swordsman, to a duel!”
Logan’s voice, filled with force, echoed beyond the walls of Kyle Castle, vibrating across the entire field.
