The more confident someone is, the harder they fall when their beliefs are proven wrong. So, breaking through the defenses and attacking again was the best plan.
“W-What is all this!”
“Ugh, spare me!”
Kawaaaang!
“Aaaargh!”
The Imperial soldiers were panicking and couldn’t fight properly. Their lines were falling apart.
‘The mages must be busy with a big spell, so they can’t come right away.’
It would be great if the ‘Earthquake’ spell had hurt some of the mages, but that was unlikely.
Now was the chance.
‘Kill the Emperor. Now!’
Flash!
A golden aura shot into the sky, drawing everyone’s attention.
“Come, you dogs of the Empire! I, Logan McLane, am here!”
Kwakwakwakwa.
The aura was meant to scare the enemy and signal Logan’s friends. When Logan saw Victoria and Clayton sneak away from the fortress, his heart beat faster.
‘Please, Duke Clayton. Please, Lia.’
Ba-dump! Ba-dump!
The plan was simple.
Harman and Logan would distract the enemy, while Clayton and Victoria prepared a secret attack. Aileen would help them escape.
The enemy mages would be in the back, busy with their spell, so they couldn’t attack. Logan, Harman, and Jay Paulson, a skilled fighter from the East, would hold back Jerome and any other strong fighters.
As Harman used his holy power and Logan and Jay attacked, the two mages wouldn’t be noticed. The secret attack wouldn’t normally work, but the Emperor’s weakness made it a good chance.
Logan thought they had a good chance to succeed.
‘Just kill the Emperor.’
To do that, he had to keep the enemy’s attention on the fortress.
Logan swung his sword wildly.
“Enemy commander… Grrrk.”
Skkk.
“King… Kraaah!”
Tear.
“Come at me, all of you! I am here!”
The golden whip blade struck enemies within twenty meters.
“S-Someone stop him!”
“Aaaargh!”
“Grrrk.”
The whip blade moved unpredictably, causing chaos for the Imperial Army.
Logan turned the area into scorched earth, his eyes scanning the battlefield.
He was looking for anything unexpected.
He saw Harman moving in the distance.
‘Has he finally come to his senses?’
Harman looked uneasy, but he didn’t seem to be doing anything strange.
He was just cutting down the enemies who attacked him.
Skkk.
Tear.
“Aaaargh!”
“Aura!?”
“It’s a superhuman!”
Harman wasn’t using his holy power as planned.
The holy power in his sword strikes was very faint. He was saving his strength. He looked pale and sick, like he was injured.
‘Is he planning something, or did something happen to him…?’
He was still using aura, but not as much as before the war. The Empire might not even notice his holy power at that rate.
Someone else was drawing attention.
“Kaisers! Show your face! Is the Emperor of the Empire just going to hide!”
A middle-aged man with blond hair and blue eyes shouted. The Imperial knights charged at him, but he used fire magic to keep them away.
Whirr.
“Aaaargh!”
He burned several knights with a single move.
Skkk.
“You rat!”
He blocked the knights’ powerful attacks with a shield of red flames, moving as fast as a mage.
His fighting style, a mix of mage and knight, was very destructive.
Then…
“…The Dongik King!?”
“It’s the traitor Gerard!”
“Kill him!”
The Imperial knights turned their attention to him.
The knights charged.
– The glory of killing the traitor is mine!
They were eager to kill him.
“Behead the traitor!”
“That head is mine!”
“Who says!”
Five strong knights attacked him.
But a knight with a red aura blocked the attacks.
“O-Aura!?”
“There’s another aura user!”
“Damn it!”
Gerard, the former King of the East, and the aura user drew attention, even more than Logan.
‘More than the Continental Swordmaster.’
‘This is easier.’
‘I’ll definitely catch him!’
It was easier to deal with him than Logan.
Whirr.
Bang!
“Aaaargh!”
“Kill!”
“Die!”
The situation was going as planned.
Now, only one thing remained.
‘Please, Lia.’
Logan thought about the three people heading to the underground.
“Target.”
“Confirmed.”
Knights in black armor charged at him.
‘What are those guys?’
They seemed like normal knights, but they were very fast.
Then, they got close.
Wooong.
“Emperor.”
“Your Majesty.”
“Long live.”
Crimson aura erupted from the fifteen knights in black armor.
* * *
“Q-Queen, be careful… you’re going too fast!”
“Queen, we need to hurry! Faster!”
Aileen heard the priests’ voices.
Aileen ran faster.
“Uaaah!”
“Just a little more!”
The mages were turning pale.
They couldn’t keep up with Aileen’s speed. Aileen was using her special speed technique, moving like a feather in the wind.
She was impatient.
‘Faster!’
She needed to check the battlefield. The enemy mages might attack, or there might be more strong fighters than expected.
She had promised her husband to focus on defense. But now that there were fewer strong fighters than expected, she wondered if she should have stayed at the fortress.
Her husband’s attack had helped McLane.
She was running to use the final move.
‘…Why am I so uneasy?’
It was just a feeling.
The Home Guard would help by shooting crossbows from the fortress.
Aileen ran even faster. She passed the knights guarding the area and entered the underground plaza.
The plaza was for the grand magic circle. The old prisons had been removed.
“H-Hurry!”
Aileen threw the two mages into the center of the magic circle. She had been running for over ten minutes.
“Uaaargh!”
“Master, focus!”
Clayton landed in a panic. Victoria took out a crown, her face turning red.
The Crown of Ruler.
It was the treasure of the Grandia Kingdom and the symbol of the king.
The King of McLane only wore it during his coronation.
It was a powerful magical crown that protected the wearer. It also had another function.
‘The ability to use some of the power of the ancient magic circle of Grand.’
Victoria drew up her magic.
The crown would affect the magic circle. It would only be a small amount of power, but it was enough for the wearer to use mage-level magic once.
If the person was a mage and used it above the magic circle, they could use even more power.
‘I can’t touch the fortress wall, vitality, or weakening magic circles. I’ll take a little power from the magic circle for mental protection.’
Wooong.
Victoria gathered a lot of magic. She processed it into her own magic power.
It was a burden on her body.
Crack.
Victoria focused her mind. Clayton placed his hand on her shoulder.
“Victoria, promise me you won’t push yourself too far.”
She nodded.
She couldn’t speak.
Clayton drew up his own magic and guided her.
The mage transferred their minds to the rear of the enemy camp.
It was a large camp.
They saw the Emperor’s barracks, decorated with rich tapestries and glowing with a soft, blue magical light.
A one-eyed knight was guarding the entrance.
‘Jerome Decaide.’
‘As expected.’
They didn’t need to face the strong fighter first.
Then, they saw a group of people passing by the barracks.
There were over a thousand people in robes.
‘The Empire’s magic corps.’
One of them stood in front of Jerome.
‘Galen Decaide.’
Galen Decaide, a powerful ice mage, patted Jerome on the shoulder and left. Jerome nodded and stayed behind.
‘Good.’
They moved beyond a certain distance.
‘Now!’
‘Yes!’
A golem appeared in front of Jerome Decaide.
