“Aaargh, finally!”
“We won!”
“We did it!” The loud sounds of fighting were gone. Now, only happy shouts filled the air.
They had won the battle. They had more soldiers and powerful fighters, but the most amazing thing was their leader. He was at the front, fighting the enemy general and also telling everyone what to do.
People knew their leader was a hero from past wars. They said he was strong and lucky, but not really a smart planner.
But today, everyone could see he was in charge of everything on the battlefield. He controlled it completely.
[Stop using the Liberatio attack in 3, 2, 1, it will hit our own troops!]
[The left side needs more power! Third group, soldiers from Company 1 to 5, go to the left!]
[Center! Knights, you are too far ahead of the soldiers! Knights, slow down! Soldiers, try to keep up!]
[Stop! Do not chase the running enemies. We don’t need to catch the few who are escaping!] This voice was in the minds of all McLaine soldiers during the fight.
Logan was an Aura Master. He could see the feelings and intentions of all the soldiers like a map in his mind, using his special “soul-seeing eyes.”
He gave orders directly to their minds, without needing flags or messengers. It was like he was controlling the whole battlefield.
The soldiers felt this power of the Aura Master for the first time. They had only heard about it in old stories. Their spirits lifted high.
*Our King is with us!*
Many soldiers watched Logan with fast-beating hearts as he gave orders to end the battle, even now.
*He is truly a hero sent by the gods to help us.* At that moment, every soldier who fought in the Battle of Lusphelheim Plains felt this deeply.
Logan clenched his fists, hiding hands that were shaking slightly. He was just realizing the new power he now had.
*So, I can do this much.* It wasn’t like he had time to relax and watch the battle because there were no strong enemies left. Even while he was still fighting and defeating enemies, he could see the whole battlefield clearly.
By seeing the feelings of all soldiers, where he could see what everyone was planning, he understood the whole war and could give orders right away.
He could choose who to send his “soul voice” to, sending his thoughts like waves. This was enough to give orders to everyone who trusted him.
Because of this, he could move the huge army of 200,000 soldiers, including allies, like they were parts of his own body. It felt like the army became 30% stronger just because of this power.
He also felt the trust of the soldiers flowing into him, making his own soul stronger.
This battle showed him clearly what he needed to do to become even stronger as an Aura Master.
*If I have this power, I can definitely do it.* He now believed that he could do more than just attack the Empire’s weak points. He could even take Penna, the most important city in the east of the Empire, beyond Lusphelheim. It wasn’t just a dream anymore.
Logan felt satisfied and announced the end of the battle.
“Clean up the battlefield! We will rest here for three days!”
“Woooaaah!” Many loud shouts answered his strong voice. He could send his thoughts directly now, but shouting was still better to make everyone excited.
Quickly, the powerful fighters and knights, including his teacher, started giving orders to the soldiers.
“Collect the dead bodies and burn them!”
“If you are hurt, go to the healers! The round tent over there!”
“If you are free, start building the camps!” The battlefield became busy again.
Just then, three people quickly came to Logan.
“Congratulations, Your Majesty!” said a smiling man with blond hair.
“That was an amazing battle. The stories about the Aura Master are really true,” said a beautiful woman with black hair, who looked a bit like the man but felt different.
Behind them, a young knight bowed his head slightly.
Logan saw them smiling, even though their own country’s army had just lost. He knew again how strong their pasts were connected to this. Especially Louisa, who fought in the battle without using her magic from the Cassel Magic Tower, just as he asked. She even got a small injury.
“You all worked hard too,” Logan said. “You even fought in a battle you didn’t have to.”
“No, Your Majesty,” Gerard replied quickly. “If it’s about destroying the Empire and the Emperor’s family, I will do anything. Just tell me what to do.”
Logan knew Gerard was telling the truth. He could see it in their souls.
“I see,” Logan said with a smile. “That’s good to hear.”
He knew Gerard was a powerful fire mage, using magic that was very advanced for someone from Sabang. Jay Pearson was also strong with Aura powers. And Louisa was a skilled fighter, even without using the special magic from her tower.
But Logan wasn’t thinking about helping them right now. *When I deal with the Cassel Magic Tower, they will be my first problem.* But now was not the time.
Logan kept smiling, hiding what he really felt. Then, Louisa brought news they had been waiting for.
“The Tower Lord has joined the Western army with his best mages. They have announced their plan, just like we talked about. The Emperor will probably hear about it in a day or two.”
“Oh?” Logan was happy to hear Louisa’s words. She was speaking for her father, the Tower Lord.
“The Tower Lord really did what he promised.” This news would keep the Emperor busy in the west. He couldn’t ignore the powerful Archmage leading the enemy there.
Even if the Emperor risked coming here, the west of his Empire would be in big trouble. So, either way, it was good for them.
“The Tower Lord said you would understand the importance of the ‘promise’,” Louisa continued. “Did you think he wouldn’t keep it?”
The importance of the promise? Logan’s eyes sharpened at those words. It sounded like he should already know what it meant. It was something he couldn’t understand directly from the Tower Lord because their powers were so opposite.
*Speaking and acting honestly… it feels like a small light grows in my soul.* Could this be the soul power the Archmage is looking for? Logan started to guess.
Maybe it’s about focusing inside and making the soul stronger in quality. This was the opposite of how Aura Masters work, which is to spread their power out and gain faith from others.
But thinking about the feeling he got from the Nine Gods’ power, he wondered if the Archmage’s way might be better. If that’s true… *I will learn that way too.*
I haven’t lived a life full of lies, although I haven’t always told the complete truth. So, this shouldn’t be too hard.
For a moment, a strange thought popped into my head – something about workers in the kingdom making weapons. But it was probably just my imagination.
Okay. I’ve pushed myself hard, but I haven’t lied.
Logan chuckled quietly, picturing how his small servant would look if he heard that.
“Your Majesty?” Louisa asked, her voice a little sharp. She and Gerard both narrowed their eyes, looking at him closely. They seemed unsure what to make of his sudden silence and smile.
“Oh, sorry,” Logan said, shaking his head slightly. “I was just thinking. Yes, of course, I believe you.” He tried to sound convincing.
Actually, it wasn’t really that he believed the Archmage’s promise. It was more like he figured it out using logic.
If the Kassel Magic Tower really wanted to bring Zivrik Kassel back to life, they would need a mountain of dead bodies – just like they did in his past life. Maybe even more bodies this time.
Thinking about that, sacrificing the people left from a defeated kingdom seemed… almost reasonable.
“Destroying the whole empire would make getting enough sacrifices even easier”, he thought with a shiver.
A cold feeling went down his back at the thought. Luckily, the old King from Dongik and his daughter looked happy with his answer.
“Then we will also continue to support you, Your Majesty.”
“…Thank you for your support,” Logan replied. He almost said something like, ‘That’s reassuring,’ or ‘I trust you.’ But he stopped himself. He remembered the ‘weight of the oath’ – whatever that truly meant – and changed what he was going to say.
He wondered if even small, polite lies could affect the light of his soul.
“I need to be very careful”, he thought.
He felt a little sad that he couldn’t see his own soul. But he knew there were more important things to worry about right now.
“First, Luthspellheim must be conquered”, he thought firmly.
Logan watched Gerard and his daughter leave, then turned his head to look west, towards the setting sun and the city that awaited him.
The three-day break was just enough time for the soldiers to rest a little. They were very tired from marching so fast and fighting many battles in a row.
Demian had suggested the three-day break. He had figured out that the empire’s main army couldn’t send help for at least 7 to 10 days. This was because it would take them three days just to reach Luthspellheim from where they were, plus the time they would need to fight battles on the way.
Luthspellheim – the heart of trade between the empire and the kingdom. It was a huge city, the same one he had travelled through years ago to meet the Emperor.
“Six days from now, we attack Luthspellheim”, he thought.
“That will be the real start of taking over the empire”.
Red eyes, illuminated by the setting sun, gleamed like flames.
“Retreat! Everyone, retreat!” Bering yelled again and again, quickly turning the army around. His boss, Drexler, who was supposed to be in charge, was just standing there, shocked by the unbelievable news. Bering was acting much faster.
So, the huge army of 150,000 soldiers, who had marched out of Luthspellheim’s east gate full of confidence just hours before, quickly turned back in the fields.
They knew they wouldn’t meet McLain’s army right away, since it was still three days away. But they needed to get back to Luthspellheim quickly to get ready for a fight inside the city walls. They had to get everyone organized again.
However, the soldiers didn’t fully understand his intentions.
“What’s happening?!” one soldier yelled, panicking.
“I don’t know! Just turn around, fast!” another shouted back.
“Ow! My foot! Watch where you’re going, idiot!”
Some soldiers tripped and fell in the confusion.
The army was a messy mix of soldiers. There were soldiers left over from the 4th, 5th, 7th, and 8th Legions, and also soldiers from the Dongik Royal Army who had joined them because of Zipen’s last order. They looked terrible, not at all like a proud imperial army. They were just too mixed together.
“Back to Luthspellheim! We need to make it strong! It’s safer behind the walls! Soldiers, get yourselves together!” Only when Drexler saw the chaos did he seem to wake up. His scar on his face twitched as he started yelling at the soldiers again and again.
Then, in a quieter voice, he asked Bering.
“What on earth happened?”
He looked completely lost and confused.
But Bering didn’t know anything more than Drexler. Then, the terrible news came in: *Zipen Trai is dead. 90% of his Knights are gone. The 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 6th Legions are destroyed. Maybe 20,000 to 30,000 soldiers survived*.
Almost a third of the soldiers lived, probably because McLain’s army didn’t chase after them. But with their leader, Zipen, who was like a super-powerful warrior, dead, and almost all the knights killed, there was no chance the rest of the army could get to Luthspellheim in time.
“Didn’t you hear the news? What else could it be? Zipen must have messed everything up.” *He must have waited too long to decide to run away, and then got completely destroyed*. *Yes, that has to be what happened*, Drexler thought, trying to convince himself.
But Bering quickly thought about the timing – when Zipen had moved the Dongik army and when they were attacked. He had to stop himself from getting angry.
“Zipen must have acted fast and retreated as soon as he heard they had declared war…”, Bering realized.
“But still, he was caught and destroyed?* How could that happen?
“If that man had just been a little less proud…” Drexler, still not understanding how bad things were, kept blaming Zipen, even though he was dead. Drexler was so angry he was grinding his teeth.
Yes. It was probably better for Drexler’s mind to think like that.
McLain’s army was about three days away. They had heard it was a complete victory for McLain, so his army probably hadn’t lost many soldiers. It really was a hopeless situation.
“They must have at least one more legion than we do. At least 50,000 more soldiers. How can we beat those numbers…? And just how strong is this Logan McLain…?* These worries filled his head, making him feel sick.
But worrying wouldn’t help.
“There’s nothing else we can do right now,” Bering said, trying to sound strong. “We just have to defend the city, Duke Drexler. The Emperor will send help.”
“…Yes, we must,” Drexler agreed weakly. “We just have to try and hold on.”
Five days after the two powerful warriors had decided to fight as hard as they could, even though it seemed hopeless… The moment they got news that McLain’s army was just one day away, Drexler and Bering found themselves facing surprise visitors.
“No way…!?” Their eyes were wide open, and they looked… happy?
