Baron Vasily made his plan based on what a scout told him.
“The enemies are moving quickly towards the Third Defense Line. The front group of soldiers should be here in two hours. The soldiers at the back are bringing war supplies. We think there are about two thousand five hundred soldiers in the front, and about five hundred at the back.”
That meant a total of three thousand soldiers, which was a lot.
The Hector Kingdom was strong. If they set up their Flares to shoot fire, Baron Vasily thought it would be very hard to protect the fortress.
So, he made a plan. He would make a small, secret group of soldiers (a guerrilla unit) to attack the enemy’s rearguard (the soldiers at the back).
“The Southern Front doesn’t need to beat the Hector Kingdom,” he thought. “If we can just hold on for ten days, Cairo’s main army will come, and things will change. So, using a guerrilla unit is a great way to bother the enemy’s rearguard. We need to cause as much trouble as we can so they can’t focus on attacking the fortress. And if the rearguard has Flare ammunition, we can destroy it and make the Flares not work.”
It was a dangerous plan.
Even though there were only five hundred of them, if they were caught, they could be surrounded by three thousand soldiers and be in big trouble.
But hadn’t Roman Dmitry done something similar?
He had not only fought off the enemies with just two hundred soldiers but had also killed almost a thousand of them.
A heroic spirit filled Baron Vasily’s heart.
Even though he had been moved to the Southern Front, he used to be a Third Star swordsman who fought on the Western Front.
“I can do what Roman Dmitry did!” he thought. “From now on, it’s a fight to earn war points. The person who gets the most points in ten days will get to move to the central government after the war.”
He made up his mind.
Baron Vasily chose three hundred soldiers.
They left the castle secretly so no one would see them. They went ahead to the road the rearguard would use, making sure to stay away from the vanguard (the front group).
Chachak.
“Stop,” he said, raising his hand to tell the soldiers to hide.
The soldiers quickly hid in the bushes.
Baron Vasily used his Aura Swordsman skills to check if the rearguard was coming.
The rearguard was not in sight yet.
But Baron Vasily knew the Southern Front very well, and there was no other way for them to go, so he was sure they would show up.
And there they were.
In the distance, the rearguard came into view.
The battle hadn’t even started, but Baron Vasily couldn’t hide how excited he was.
“A bad situation can be a chance for something good,” he thought. “Starting today, I will get out of this terrible place.”
There were only two hundred more enemies than them.
He didn’t think much of it. If those fools were defeated by just two hundred soldiers, he believed three hundred would be more than enough.
It was very important to be fast.
If they quickly set fire to the war supplies before the enemies knew what was happening, the Hector Kingdom would have problems in the future.
He held his breath, waiting for the right moment.
Finally, when the enemies were close enough, Baron Vasily jumped up and shouted loudly, using his mana.
“Attack!”
“All troops, charge!”
It was a surprise attack. The Cairo soldiers charged forward, looking like they had already won.
Rumble!
Aura flashed.
Baron Vasily used his aura and swung his sword at the knight guarding the front of the enemy group.
“Attack first to take control,” he thought.
He was sure the attack would work. In his mind, he was already cutting down the knight and running forward.
But.
Clang!
Rumble!
The Hector knight also used his aura.
Even though it was a surprise attack, the Hector knight blocked Baron Vasily’s attack as if he had been expecting it. Their auras clashed.
Baron Vasily felt dizzy for a moment because of the strong hit.
Even though they hadn’t fought much, he knew right away that the other knight’s aura was stronger than his.
“The other guy is also a Third Star swordsman,” he realized.
His face turned white. Something was wrong.
The soldiers behind him, who had been charging forward, were screaming and falling.
“Enemies!”
“Cairo soldiers are here!”
The Hector Kingdom reacted quickly and in an organized way.
Arrows filled the sky. They raised their shields to block the arrows and then killed the Cairo soldiers who were charging at them.
It was the start of a massacre.
The Cairo soldiers thought they were stronger. But as soon as they started fighting, they were quickly defeated.
“This is revenge for my friends!”
The Hector soldiers’ eyes were full of anger.
They had held their friends’ funeral with sad faces, promising to get revenge.
The enemy’s surprise attack? They had already expected it.
Roman Dmitry was a monster who had killed many of their allies using the mountains and the darkness to his advantage. So, they thought about the possibility of being attacked in any situation.
The rearguard was like a trap. They wanted to trick the enemy into coming to the plains and then defeat them as soon as they showed up.
Bang-
Bang bang-
Signal flares went off.
The retreat was blocked right away. The vanguard, which they thought was far away, came back quickly, completely blocking the retreat while the Cairo soldiers panicked.
Wherever they went, Hector soldiers blocked their way. They tried to break through with all their strength, but the Hector soldiers didn’t fall as easily as they had expected.
“This can’t be happening,” Baron Vasily thought, his eyes wide.
He couldn’t believe it. He thought the Hector Kingdom would be disorganized, but their quick response shocked him.
It wasn’t just that they were ready. The Hector Kingdom had trained its soldiers well for this war, and they were better than the soldiers on the Southern Front, who had become too relaxed.
Baron Vasily had not thought about this. He forgot that the amazing win before was only because of Roman Dmitry.
The amazing win had made him too confident. The Hector knight kept pushing him back, and he lost his strength.
Clang!
His arm was pushed back, and he looked pale. Aura filled his vision.
“Shit.”
Thwack!
That was the last thing he remembered.
In the Cairo Royal Court, people were relaxed and happy.
With just one win, they thought they had taken control against the Hector Kingdom.
But their happiness did not last long.
Barely a day had passed when the Cairo Royal Court received some very disturbing news.
“Baron Vasily, the commander of the Third Defense Line, has been killed fighting the enemy!”
“Your Majesty! The Third and Fourth Defense Lines have been captured by the enemy. Only the Second Defense Line is left. If that falls too, the Southern Front will be in the hands of the Hector Kingdom.”
“We just got a report from the Second Defense Line! They say they can’t hold out much longer against the enemy’s attacks!”
Just one day had passed since they heard that the Hector Kingdom had started attacking the front lines.
The difference in military strength was clear. It was true that the soldiers on the Southern Front were at a disadvantage, but with Roman Dmitry taking control, they thought they could hold out for ten days.
But what was happening?
Daniel Cairo couldn’t believe how quickly things were getting worse.
“Did something unexpected happen?” he wondered.
There was no other way to explain it.
But that wasn’t the whole story either.
A survivor from the Hector Kingdom’s attack said this in his last message to the Royal Court:
[The Hector Kingdom has finally run out of Flares. But we still can’t stop them. Even though they aren’t breaking down the walls and attacking, we can’t stop the Hector Kingdom soldiers who are putting ladders against the walls, climbing over, and killing our allies! Please save us. We can’t hold out for ten days. If things continue like this, the Southern Front will soon be in the enemy’s hands.]
This was shocking news.
The Southern Front’s magical defenses against the Flares were not working well because the facilities were old.
They thought the first defeat was because the Flares had made the walls useless.
The Hector Kingdom was not in a good situation, so they couldn’t get enough war supplies. The Flares they used to take control quickly ran out.
But the result was the same. The soldiers climbing over the walls showed the Cairo Kingdom how bad the situation really was.
There was a big difference in military strength, and the Southern Front was falling apart.
Daniel Cairo then understood what that one win meant.
“It’s not that the Cairo Kingdom was strong, or that the Hector Kingdom was weak,” he thought. “It’s just that Roman Dmitry, who is different from everyone else, created an amazing win. We were too relaxed. We should have known that the enemy was stronger and told the commanders of the Southern Front to avoid fighting them directly.”
Maybe he had secretly hoped that the amazing win created by Roman would lead to similar wins on other battlefields.
But reality was crashing down.
In this bad situation, Daniel Cairo naturally had to find Roman.
“Where is Roman Dmitry now?”
The Cairo Royal Court was looking for Roman Dmitry.
Henry Albert, who had received the Royal Court’s message, went to Chris and asked,
“Chris! Did Roman say when he would be back? The Southern Front is about to fall to the enemy. I don’t know what he’s doing, but I need to give the Royal Court’s message to Roman.”
He was frustrated. Below the mountain, the front lines were burning. This was a great chance to earn war points, but Roman had disappeared completely since the battle ended.
Chris said, “He expected this to happen.”
“What?” Henry asked.
“My lord said that the win against the Hector Kingdom was mostly luck. If the enemies hadn’t followed us into the mountains, if they hadn’t been so determined to capture him, the Hector Kingdom would have captured the Southern Front sooner.”
Roman Dmitry was not celebrating the win. He knew the truth and knew what would happen if he went down the mountain to stop the Hector Kingdom’s attacks.
So, Roman ordered everyone to rest. He knew Cairo would be defeated, so he saved his strength.
Henry Albert was speechless. “Seriously,” he said.
He couldn’t understand Roman. Everyone expected to lose the guerrilla war. When he thought it was impossible, he made a decision and created an amazing win. But now that he thought there was a chance to win, he was doing the opposite.
Roman did not think like normal people. No matter how bad the situation was, he cut off contact with everyone, and no one could guess what he was doing.
Henry was worried. He had to show the Royal Court that he was Roman’s man, but he couldn’t do anything because Chris was so firm.
Far away, he saw where Roman was. ‘What is he doing there alone?’ he wondered.
He couldn’t know that even at that moment, Roman Dmitry was moving one step forward.
