One week had passed since they left the capital city.
They had traveled through a magic gate in the northeast – a way to travel very quickly. Roman and his soldiers had rested well after arriving at the gate, before starting the last part of their journey to Dimitri.
The trip from the southern front had been very tiring. Even though they felt a bit better after resting in the capital, there was no need to hurry to Dimitri. They were close now.
Exactly one week after leaving the capital, Roman entered Baron Conrad’s land.
Dimitri was just beyond Conrad’s territory. The soldiers walked faster now, excited to be almost home. They talked about seeing their families again, their voices full of longing for their hometown.
How far had they traveled?
When they reached the border between Dimitri and Conrad, a strange sight caught their attention.
“Oh, dear!”
“This year’s harvest is ruined!”
“You bastards! How are we supposed to live now!”
A group of people.
It was easy to see what had happened. Farmers, judging by how they looked, were sitting on the ground, crying.
The vast land where crops had been planted was destroyed. The farmers’ faces were a mess, and they cried as if the world was ending. It was clear there had been a recent fight.
Roman looked away from them.
He didn’t know what trouble they were in, but Roman didn’t think it was his job to solve their problems.
Not until Chris explained it to him.
“…It seems they are farmers from Dimitri. I heard that some people who don’t work in the mines rent land in Conrad’s territory to farm. Conrad was said to lease the land because it was hard to manage from far away, but it seems something went wrong.”
Suddenly, Roman stopped walking.
They were from Dimitri.
That changed things.
The incident with the Castro family.
Roman had taken Dimitri under his wing, so their problems were now his problems.
Roman said.
“Chris, bring them to me. I need to hear what happened to them.”
“Understood.”
Chris bowed his head.
Soon, Chris brought the farmers to Roman.
It was as Chris had said.
They were farmers, not often found in Dimitri. When Roman asked, they quickly told him everything, like a dam breaking.
“As you know, young master, Dimitri doesn’t have much good land for farming. So, many farmers rent this land on the border between Dimitri and Conrad to grow crops. We signed a contract directly with the Conrad family, promising to rent this land for ten years. The harvest season is only a month away, but a few days ago, the Conrad family suddenly sent us a strange notice.”
At the word ‘notice,’ the farmer pounded his chest, looking frustrated.
Just thinking about it made him angry.
“The Conrad family said they planned to use the land themselves, so they told us to leave within a week. Does that make sense? We are just common people, but we paid a fair price and signed a contract to rent this place for ten years. With five years still left on the contract, they are trying to kick us out without asking us. Young master, it’s really unfair. Look at this. Because we refused to leave, the Conrad family sent people to destroy the land.”
“Sob, we have no way to live now. We’ve been working hard all this time, looking forward to harvesting the crops, but if we can’t even harvest, how are we supposed to live?”
The farmers started crying.
It was a frustrating situation for them.
The Conrad family had completely ignored the legal contract, but there was something more important than contracts in this world.
The class system.
Against the Conrad family, who had a lot of power in the northeast, the farmers’ complaints meant nothing.
They could be accused of something and lose their lives.
Because they were from Dimitri, they only had their land destroyed. If they were from Conrad, they wouldn’t have even been able to complain.
It was an unfair situation.
The rights of the weak were completely ignored. Chris said quietly.
“Lord, the farmers’ situation is sad, but it doesn’t seem like we can do anything to help. The land the farmers rented clearly belongs to the Conrad family. If we stopped them from taking back their property, it could become a problem between the two families. And the Conrad family has created their own power with the nobles in the northeast. So, the problem with Conrad is never simple.”
The northeast region.
If Barco and Dimitri were the two biggest powers, then there were forces like Conrad below them.
Their individual power wasn’t that great, but they worked together to protect each other.
The Northeast Alliance.
They were like bats.
When the Barco family was powerful, they supported them. As soon as the Barco family fell, they showed up at Dimitri’s parties.
They usually didn’t cause trouble.
Because they only worked together when they were in danger, there was no reason to cause problems for each other.
The problem was that the opponent was Roman Dimitri.
The political situation in the northeast was closely related to Roman’s future plans.
Roman said.
“Chris, if we do nothing because the problem isn’t simple, no one will solve our problems for us. Doing nothing only makes the problem worse. Before it gets any bigger, we need to solve the problem completely.”
“…!”
Chris’s eyes widened.
Roman’s words.
He knew what they meant.
Chris stepped back and bowed his head.
“I will follow your command, Lord.”
If Roman had made a decision, it was the subordinate’s job to follow it.
Finally, they arrived at Dimitri.
The castle gates opened wide as if welcoming Roman’s return, and the people of Dimitri came out and cheered loudly.
“Roman! Roman!”
“Roman! Roman!”
“The hero of Cairo! You are the pride of Dimitri!”
It was crazy.
They had heard the stories.
They knew what brave acts Roman Dimitri had done on the southern front, and that he was called the hero of Cairo because of it.
They felt very proud to be from Dimitri.
Once called the fool of Dimitri, now everyone looked at Roman Dimitri with respect.
Breaking through the crowd, Roman moved forward.
Being welcomed by the people was normal now, and people cheered wherever Roman looked.
At the entrance to the inner castle, Baron Romero ran out and hugged Roman tightly.
“My son, you’ve really been through a lot!”
“Have you been well?”
“Of course, I’ve been well. What special things would happen in a quiet place like Dimitri? I’ve prepared a big party for you. Let’s eat, drink, and have fun as if it’s the last day of our lives.”
Baron Romero walked ahead.
But Roman didn’t follow him.
With a serious face despite the cheers of the people, he spoke in a voice that stopped Baron Romero’s steps.
“Father, could you talk to me privately for a moment?”
The Lord’s office.
The noise faded.
Roman explained what had happened with the Conrad family, and Baron Romero looked a bit stiff as he said.
“…I’ve heard about that. But son, there are sensitive issues that you can’t touch without thinking in this world. No matter how many contracts you’ve signed, there’s no way to stop the Conrad family from taking back their land. Even if you did stop them, would Dimitri’s farmers be able to farm properly on Conrad’s land? It’s better to create new jobs for them as a peaceful solution.”
It was the same as Chris.
Baron Romero didn’t want to make the problem bigger.
Unless they had seriously hurt the people of Dimitri, this problem was not clearly wrong.
Roman said.
“I know what you’re saying, Father. But I want to ask you something.”
“Speak.”
“If it wasn’t Dimitri’s people, but Marquis Benedict’s people, do you think the Conrad family would think they could take the farmers’ land?”
Baron Romero’s face immediately became serious.
It was a sensitive issue.
It was a pointless example, and Baron Romero couldn’t understand what Roman meant.
“I don’t know why you’re saying that, but Marquis Benedict is not just any noble. He’s the head of the central government that controls the Cairo Kingdom. Count Gregory and Count Denver have some power because the Empire protects them, but in the Cairo Kingdom, Marquis Benedict is the real power. Who would dare to touch the people he protects? It’s a bad example, and it has nothing to do with our problem.”
He made his position clear.
It was the right thing to say.
If Marquis Benedict was the example, no problem would be solved.
In the first place, most people were careful around him, so how could they touch his people?
“That’s right. Like you said, Father, Marquis Benedict is the real power, and that’s why no one even thinks of touching his people. Then, what do you think is the position of the Dimitri family in the northeast? Until just half a year ago, we hadn’t become strong. But by defeating the Barco family, I can say that no family is stronger than us in the northeast.”
“I won’t deny what you’re saying. Although Dimitri is the strongest in the northeast, if you only trust your own strength, you might be attacked by the surrounding groups. This isn’t about pride. There’s no need to make a problem bigger and create a fight between Dimitri and other forces.”
“No, there is a need to do so.”
He disagreed strongly.
Even with Baron Romero’s words, Roman didn’t give up.
“We defeated Barco. Even then, the northeast was trying to please the Barco family, which was protected by the ‘central government,’ and they completely agreed with them. But what about now? Although Barco’s power came from the central government, now that Dimitri has the real power, nobles, including the Conrad family, are acting too relaxed. People are saying, ‘Dimitri isn’t as sensitive as Barco, so we don’t need to worry too much. Even if we touch Dimitri’s people, it won’t be a big problem.’ They think that Dimitri is just a family in the northeast and has limits because it doesn’t have the protection of a large force like the central government.”
The northeast was a small world.
The king of that place was not important compared to the whole of Cairo.
“Father, the Conrad family touched Dimitri’s people. It’s not just a problem between people living in the area. Even though it’s a matter managed directly by the Conrad family, they thought they could touch Dimitri’s people. What does that mean? That’s all we’re worth. People say that Dimitri is the best family in the northeast, but they don’t really act like it.”
His voice became strong.
The war with Hector.
Roman remembered the wildness of his past life.
The hunter who survived in the world of survival knew that he shouldn’t let this problem pass.
He looked straight at Baron Romero.
And then, he said firmly.
“Now is the time to show who is in charge in the northeast. Who is above, who is below. We must make it clear with this incident.”
Sparks flew.
Roman showed a new goal for the northeast region.
