The day the message from Roman arrived, Kevin’s family was trying to put their shattered life back together. Dust still hung in the air, and broken furniture lay scattered around their small house. The Blood Fang thugs had left their mark everywhere.
Clark sighed, kicking a splintered piece of wood. “Those blasted fellows! They’ve completely wrecked our home.”
Michelle, her voice softer, replied as she swept up dust, “Still, isn’t it a blessing we are home at all? If not for Master Roman, who knows what those men might have done to us?”
It hadn’t been long since the Clark family had been living through terrible days.
They had lost everything because of loans with very high interest, and scary men visited every day, shouting and wrecking the house.
Clark’s face was always bruised from the violence, and Michelle would sit on the floor, crying.
Even then, she held on and endured the pain, determined to protect her daughter.
One bad deal. A farmer’s dream of growing crops on his own land had become a nightmare after he met a cruel criminal gang.
“…But is it true that Master Roman defeated the Blood Fang? The Master Roman we know isn’t someone who could do that. Kevin keeps saying Master Roman is amazing, but I find it hard to believe because of what I’ve seen and heard.”
Looking back on the past few days, Clark still found it hard to believe.
Not only had Roman Dmitry saved Kevin, but he had even gone to Lawrence and defeated the Blood Fang.
Their hell was over.
Hans, Roman’s representative, had come to help the Clark family, allowing them to return home.
To them, Roman was a savior. Yet, they couldn’t help but wonder because their only son had left home to follow Roman.
Dmitry’s fool.
Knowing how he got that reputation, Clark worried if it was worth trusting his son’s life to him.
Michelle spoke.
“The truth doesn’t matter to us.”
Michelle knelt on the floor, picking up the broken pieces of pottery.
Each shard reminded her of the pain they had suffered.
“Like the rumors say, the Dmitry family might have changed things to help Master Roman’s reputation. But what’s important is that we got Master Roman’s help. If Master Roman hadn’t helped us, who knows what the Blood Fang would have done? So, the truth doesn’t matter. We owe Master Roman a lot, and no matter what people say, we must be grateful to Master Roman.”
She trusted Roman.
Even though they had received his kindness, Michelle was careful when she said Roman’s name.
The man her son would follow.
She had enough reason to trust him.
Michelle, too, was ready to do anything for Roman.
Just then.
Knock knock.
“Is anyone home?”
A man’s voice came from outside.
The Clark family immediately became tense.
They remembered the scary men who had barged into their home, and they were afraid it would happen again.
However.
When they opened the door, they saw a warm smile.
Hans grinned and said,
“Master Roman has given orders. From now on, I will take you to the new house where you will live.”
Hans’s words.
It was like a gift from heaven.
They were dazed.
The Clark family couldn’t believe what they were seeing.
“…Are you really saying we’re going to live here from now on?”
His voice trembled.
It was different from the shacks they had lived in.
Standing in front of the beautiful wooden house, Hans smiled and explained.
“Of course. Master Roman’s gift is not just this. Mr. Clark will be able to use some of Master Roman’s land. You don’t have to pay rent. Master Roman promised Kevin he would take care of his family, so think of the house and land as a reward for keeping that promise.”
A house and land.
It was a dream they had always wanted.
Now that their dream had come true, Clark tried to control his emotions and spoke carefully.
“We are already very grateful that you defeated the Blood Fang. May I ask why you are giving us so much? If it means sacrificing my son, I can’t accept it, even if it’s gold and jewels. So please, tell me the truth.”
Roman’s gift.
It was too much.
Kevin was just an ordinary boy, and they knew he didn’t deserve such great rewards.
Why?
They couldn’t understand why he was being so kind.
Hans smiled.
“I don’t fully understand Master Roman’s reasons either. But what I do know is that Master Roman wants to train Kevin to be his own man in the future. That’s the only reason for the reward. Because he is his man, Master Roman ordered us to help his family live in peace.”
“…I see.”
Even so.
He still didn’t understand.
But Hans’s smile and the words that he would train Kevin as his own man calmed his worried heart a little.
Hans quickly left.
The Kevin family stared at the house for a while, then sat down and cried, as if they had planned it.
A real house.
They had worked so hard for this one thing.
Now that they had it, Clark hugged his wife and daughter and cried.
For a while.
They couldn’t stop crying.
And their story slowly began to spread throughout Dmitry.
Rumors spread.
The Clark family from the slums had made it into the city.
“Did you hear that rumor?”
“What rumor?”
“About the Clark family. The family that had trouble because of loans with very high interest from the Blood Fang. Roman Dmitry summoned them and they entered the city. They even got land for free, according to the rumors?”
“Really?!”
The man was surprised.
Entering the city.
It meant they had become more important. People without property have to live in the slums outside the castle, but the Clark family used to be in an even worse situation.
The Clark family had made it into the city.
At first, I didn’t believe it.
I didn’t think Roman Dmitry would treat the Clark family that well, but as time went on, people started saying they had seen the Clark family inside the castle.
“The rumor was true. The Clark family lives in a beautiful wooden house on the edge of the castle and they are borrowing land to grow crops. You can believe me because I saw it myself.”
“You never know what will happen in life. The Clark family, who were about to lose everything because of loans with very high interest, turned their lives around in an unexpected way. By the way, Roman’s recent actions are surprising. I used to hear rumors that he had caused trouble, but he defeated the Blood Fang and now he has brought the Clark family into the castle as his own people. He’s definitely different than before.”
Roman.
This time, he was the center of attention.
The fact that he had become more important just by following Roman changed the way people saw Roman.
Kevin is an ordinary boy.
If a boy with nothing special was given a house and land just because he promised loyalty, it meant that others might have a chance too.
That’s why, as the story of the Clark family spread throughout Dmitry, people said that if you become Roman Dmitry’s man, your life will be a success.
It wasn’t a lie.
That’s how it seemed to be.
However, some people still remembered that he was called ‘Dmitry’s fool’ and said negative things.
“You fools. You’ve lived in Dmitry for years, and you’re getting excited about lies. Does Roman Dmitry seem like someone who would treat his people like that? Defeating the Blood Fang was just a trick by the Dmitry family, right? Just wait and see. I guarantee you, Kevin will be back here soon, looking sad.”
Back then.
The words of those who said negative things had power.
And a little later.
Something happened that changed Roman Dmitry’s reputation completely.
After the Barco social party ended.
As soon as he returned to his land, Roman said.
“Take a three-day vacation.”
“…Vacation?”
Kevin blinked.
Vacation.
Even for three days.
He couldn’t believe it.
The poor don’t get vacations. When the weather is good, they have to go outside to work, and they can rest at home when there is no work or the weather is bad.
So the word vacation was very strange to him.
Seeing him look up at Roman with a blank face because he didn’t know what to do, Roman said as if it was nothing special.
“Resting is also part of training. You’ve worked hard, so have a good time with your family.”
“…I understand.”
And so.
Kevin got a vacation.
He was dazed.
Kevin, who had been cut off from everyone and focused only on training, wasn’t used to the fact that he was going back to his family.
It’s strange to think about it. Kevin had lived with his family his whole life.
But he had spent so much time with Roman that Roman was a big part of his life.
‘What is the Master really like?’
Roman Dmitry.
He was like an onion. When dealing with enemies like the Blood Fang, he was cruel and showed no mercy, but he was very kind to his people.
But he wasn’t always nice.
He kept his personal and professional life separate, so he didn’t always take care of his people when he had a specific goal.
A person with clear boundaries.
That was Roman.
He didn’t know what Roman was really like, but Kevin knew one thing for sure.
Before leaving for vacation.
Hans came up to him and said.
“Are you going to see your family looking like that? Master Roman has prepared clean clothes, so wear them to meet your family. And you’ll need money to buy gifts for your family, right? From now on, you’ll get 30 silver as a monthly salary, so buy gifts, enjoy yourself, and have fun.”
Clean clothes and money.
It was Roman’s gift.
He was overwhelmed.
He was very thoughtful.
Even though he acted cold, Roman always knew what Kevin needed.
‘It doesn’t matter what he’s really like. My lord values me. That’s enough reason to follow him.’
He smiled.
Kevin went to the shower room to wash and changed into the clothes Roman had prepared.
The material was different from the rough clothes he usually wore.
The soft feeling was wonderful, and when the silver coins jingled in his pocket, he was excited to see his family looking different.
Until then, Kevin didn’t know what had happened to his family.
Like his clean clothes, it meant that his family was living a different life than before.
