Tersha’s breath caught in her throat. One moment, Roman Dmitry was fighting the World Tree, the next…
She tried to intervene, but then, suddenly, she froze.
Something felt wrong.
“…What is this?”
Flames roared around Roman Dmitry and the World Tree, but they weren’t burning. It was like fire, but not fire as she knew it.
Tersha blinked repeatedly.
They stood in the middle of the fire, but seemed untouched by the flames. No heat, no burning.
It was surreal. Elves knew fire burned wood, but this fire was different.
Faced with a situation that defied the laws of nature, Tersha stared in stunned silence.
Then, water droplets fell from the World Tree.
At first, she didn’t understand what was happening.
After a moment, she looked up and saw that the frozen, white sections were beginning to thaw, releasing droplets of water.
It was a sight that defied all Elven understanding.
The World Tree was made of wood, but it wasn’t just wood. Normal rules of nature didn’t always work here.
The World Tree had frozen not merely because of the cold. The cold from the rift was stealing its life, making it freeze.
So, this shouldn’t be happening.
She didn’t understand why it wasn’t burning, or why the fire was melting the ice.
The flames grew even fiercer.
As the World Tree slowly turned green again, everything around it changed too, as if connected.
Light spread outwards.
Green leaves sprouted on the bare branches, and as the snow-covered ground melted, blades of grass hidden beneath the surface peeked out.
The fierce wind also subsided. The heavy snowfall, at least within the Elven territory, began to diminish.
It was an influence from the World Tree that Tersha had never experienced before.
It had only gotten back a little life, but the World Tree’s power was already changing everything around it.
She couldn’t stop it. No, there was no reason to stop it.
She couldn’t understand what was happening, but Roman Dmitry was accomplishing the regeneration of the World Tree that the Elves so desperately desired.
No wise person, no old story, had ever said this would happen.
Watching this amazing thing happen, Tersha could only stare.
Suddenly, everything changed for Roman Dmitry. It was like he was pulled away from his body…
Roman Dmitry found himself in a dark place. It was like a dream, but it felt real.
“Tell me what’s happening. What about Dmitry?”
The space was dark and gloomy.
A figure seated on a high throne spoke.
Two people were kneeling before him, but their faces were obscured by the darkness.
One of them stepped forward.
“It started with Roman Dmitry. Now, other powerful people, like Duke Vieto, are fighting back. They want Valhalla to be like it was before, a place for warriors. Valhalla used to be about brave warriors, but now they are doing sneaky, bad things. Duke Vieto has stepped forward to rally the people. The public is on their side. If we push things a little more, it will quickly turn into a war between people in Valhalla.”
As he said…
Valhalla was filled with the tension of war.
People flocked from all over Valhalla, voicing their discontent with the Valhalla Emperor.
Then…
Another person spoke.
“The Emperor of Valhalla is reacting angrily. He’s not listening to the people. He’s gathering soldiers to stop them by force. Most of Valhalla’s power is under the Emperor’s control. If he orders the rebellion to be suppressed, Valhalla will be ruined forever.”
Alexandre laughed.
He liked how things were going.
He leaned forward.
The slightly revealed face was that of ‘Alexandre,’ as Roman Dmitry remembered him.
“Our plan is working perfectly, just as we wanted. Dmitry is just a small problem. He won’t stop us from getting what we want. Actually, Dmitry has helped us move forward with our plan even faster. Stir up the people. Make them angry. When Valhalla is at war, we can finally do what we’ve been waiting to do.”
He leaned back.
Just as Alexandre was about to say something more, the space began to distort.
The scene shifted again, like changing dreams.
A woman, looking hurt and tired, sat on the floor. Her face was twisted in pain.
“…Ugh.”
Her side was soaked in blood.
She put her hand on her bleeding side and used her magic. The deep wound quickly closed.
She was Isabel.
Someone approached her.
“Isabel, you have to go back to Luna now. The Chronos demons already know our plan. All our soldiers are gone. If you stay and fight, you’ll only get hurt. Please, I’m begging you. Just listen to me this time.”
He knelt.
Leo, the Royal Knight Commander of Luna, pleaded with a desperate voice.
“I can’t do that.”
She shook her head.
Because it was just the two of them…
Isabel seemed a little more at ease.
“Leo, I was born to do this. God told me what to do, and I’ve always followed his orders. How can I go against God? I can’t leave the people who trusted me, who died for me. I can’t run away just to save myself.”
Her voice trembled.
The demons of Chronos…
Her soldiers had died at their hands.
Isabel had stood at the forefront and cast blessings, but the soldiers had begun to crumble under the relentless onslaught of enemies.
The situation at that time was still vivid in her mind.
Even as they were being killed, the soldiers shouted God’s name and fought on. But Isabel knew it was hopeless.
There were endless enemies. Humans can only do so much, but the enemies never stopped.
Isabel rose to her feet.
Her magic had healed her wounds on the outside, but her body was still tired and hurting from the journey.
Her expression changed.
Isabel spoke in a stiff tone, different from her usual self.
“As Queen of Luna, and as someone who follows God’s will, I have to accept what I was born to do. Leo, you must go back to Luna now. I will face this terrible fate alone.”
She moved her feet.
She dragged her sword.
As he watched her disappear into the darkness, Leo clenched his fist.
“…Damn it.”
Despair filled the air.
Isabel and Leo stood together.
Both knew the terrible future waiting for them. They weren’t foolish.
The soldiers around them also knew that fighting Chronos’s demons meant almost certain death. But no one spoke about this harsh truth. No one tried to run. They were soldiers of Queen Isabel.
These followers of Isabel had promised to give their lives for God. They wanted to do what they believed God wanted, even if it meant the end of everything for them.
However, Leo was different.
He followed Isabel, not God.
In fact, he felt angry at God.
Why? He didn’t fully understand, but the more he did what was expected of him in God’s name, the closer he felt to a truth that was too heavy for any human to carry.
Maybe it would have been wiser to be grateful that a human’s lifespan was a hundred years and to pray that despair wouldn’t come while he was still alive.
Leo knew he was just a weak human.
He had felt like giving up many times when fighting Chronos’s demons, but then he saw Isabel disappear into the dark shadows. He grabbed his sword.
“God, please save us,” he whispered.
He moved forward, following Isabel.
He, too, disappeared into the darkness.
Perhaps, he would face death because of this choice.
He opened his eyes.
The connection with the World Tree was severed. It was a strange feeling.
Memories, things that might have happened in the past or were happening now, were mixed up in his head.
‘Alexandre and Isabel.’
First, through Alexandre’s conversation, he learned that Alexandre was causing trouble in Valhalla.
Valhalla was working with the Chronos Empire.
But since Valhalla was also a powerful empire, Chronos wanted Valhalla to destroy itself from within. That’s why they supported Duke Vieto’s rebellion.
Chronos had been weakening countries from the inside using methods like influencing the government of Cairo, causing Hector’s crop failure, and using Earl Rondon of Redford. Now, they were targeting the Valhalla Empire.
If Valhalla was badly damaged, the balance of power on the continent would collapse. Even though they claimed to be neutral, their existence was important.
Currently, the continent’s power was divided among Chronos, Valhalla, and the kingdom alliance led by Roman Dmitry.
If two of these powers fought each other in a pointless war, the remaining power would gain an advantage.
Second, Isabel’s disappearance was her own choice.
He didn’t know what truth she had discovered, but Isabel was risking her life to stop some kind of plan by Chronos.
Perhaps it was related to what the Mother Elf had said. The Mother Elf mentioned the connection to the Demon World through Graxar, so this needed to be investigated.
‘If I follow Isabel’s trail, I’ll learn part of the truth.’
There was much to do. It was time to return to Dmitry.
However, Roman Dmitry realized that his surroundings had changed.
As his mind was drawn into the fire, he didn’t know what changes had happened because of him.
Not only that, looking back, he saw thousands of elves kneeling and bowing their heads.
“Savior of Arcadia, please accept the loyalty of our elven race!”
“Please accept our loyalty!”
When Roman Dmitry connected with the World Tree, the elves were in an uproar.
Because of the huge change caused by the World Tree, they all gathered at Tersha and asked,
“What on earth is going on?!”
Tersha replied, “I don’t know either. The moment our benefactor put his hand on the World Tree, a huge fire rose from it, and the World Tree began to melt. What’s certain is that this change is because of the benefactor.”
They were shocked.
The elves desperately wanted the World Tree to be healed. What they were trying to achieve somehow became real because of someone they didn’t expect.
Soon, Mother Elf arrived. She looked at the World Tree burning and at Roman Dmitry. She was very surprised.
“To control the fire of the Fire Demon…”
It was clear that the fire came from Roman Dmitry. It was the power of the Fire Demon itself.
Roman Dmitry had met the dwarves in the underground world, and the brown rock that guided them had said that the power of the Fire Demon might be the key to melting the World Tree.
But they couldn’t get close to it because of the intense heat. So, the power of the Fire Demon was forgotten, but now its power was appearing before their eyes.
Suddenly, Mother Elf remembered the moment she connected with the World Tree. When she first sensed Roman Dmitry’s existence, she felt an incredibly strong feeling.
“Ah…”
A thrill ran through her. It was certain that the one who defeated the orcs was the savior.
He was a being who would do more than just defeat the orcs. The situation had changed.
Mother Elf turned around and said in a strong, clear voice, “All elves, listen! Our benefactor, Roman Dmitry, has saved us from the brutal orcs and has even revived the World Tree. He has proven himself to be the one who will save this world. I, Gaia, your mother, believe that the future of the elves lies with Roman Dmitry!”
At Mother Elf’s words, the elves gathered together.
“Follow Roman Dmitry! Devote yourselves to him! His will shall be the future we desire!”
They worshipped him. Everyone looked at Roman Dmitry with one heart.
Time passed. In the blazing fire, Roman Dmitry didn’t move.
It felt like a short moment to him, but the sun set and rose again, lighting up the world.
Only on the next day did Roman Dmitry open his eyes.
At that moment, Mother Elf knelt down first, then bowed her head and shouted,
“Savior of Arcadia, please accept the loyalty of our elven race!”
“Please accept our loyalty!”
Thousands of elves bowed in turn after her. These pure beings, who usually only followed God’s will, were now declaring their loyalty to a human.
