Six hours before the report.
Lucas, the boss of Odellia’s secret agents, finally got the news he needed. He leaned forward, his heart quickening.
“Something strange is happening at Lake Oscar in southwestern Odellia,” the report said. “Even though it hasn’t rained much less, the water is lower than usual. Fish are dying, and no one knows why. Also, the plants around Lake Oscar, which used to be a beautiful place and a popular spot in Odellia, are wilting, kind of like what happened with the crops in the Hector Kingdom.”
This was definitely suspicious.
Roman Dmitry had given Lucas a special job: find the way to the Demon World. But it was hard to search all over Odellia.
A lot of time had passed.
Most of his tries had failed, but this news made Lucas feel like he was on the right track.
‘Everything happens for a reason,’ he thought. ‘There has to be something there.’
He hurried to get things moving.
He gathered people and wizards to search the area and soon arrived at Lake Oscar.
“Start the operation,” he ordered.
“Understood.”
They used an unusual way to search.
Since they didn’t know how the passage to the Demon World was hidden, they didn’t send divers. Instead, the wizards used magic to move the water away from some parts of the lake.
They weren’t going to dry up the lake.
Instead, they used magic to push the water aside. This made space to see the bottom. They planned to put the water back later.
‘If the passage to the Demon World was hidden in Lake Oscar, it makes sense why it’s been so hard to find,’ Lucas thought.
A lot of people and money had been used for this mission.
They should have found something by now, but they couldn’t even find a hint of the Demon World, which was frustrating.
Even the priests couldn’t help.
Lucas had started to doubt himself, but if the passage was at the bottom of Lake Oscar, it was no wonder they couldn’t find it.
Lake Oscar was huge and deep. When people first found it, they thought it was the sea.
He watched anxiously.
The wizards were lowering the water level, making Lake Oscar look less impressive. It seemed like they would finish soon.
A few hours later, the bottom was visible.
The people who had been waiting for this moment were shocked when they saw the bottom of the lake.
“Gasp.”
“This is insane.”
The lake bottom was black.
Dark magic was flowing out of it, showing the passage to the Demon World they had been looking for. But the problem was how big it was.
The entire bottom of the lake was covered in darkness.
Even Lucas was speechless at how huge it was.
Right after the report, the top leaders were called together.
Dmitry was there, along with representatives from other countries. Lucas told them what he had found while everyone listened.
“We sent priests to check the dark magic, and they confirmed that it’s a passage to the Demon World,” Lucas said. “The problem is how big it is. If the passage is so large that it covers the entire bottom of Lake Oscar, the Demon World will start merging with our world as soon as the passage opens. Millions of demons could come to our world very quickly.”
“Millions?” someone asked.
“How did they get so many ready?”
The news was terrible. Some people couldn’t hide how worried they were, so Lucas added more information.
“It looks like Alexandr was secretly making this passage to the Demon World,” he explained. “When he died, his magic got weaker, and the dark magic was revealed. That’s how we found the passage. We can’t close the passage to the Demon World now. It’s already connected to our world, so we have to get ready for the disaster that will come through it.”
So, they had two choices.
They could go to the Demon World and fight the demons there, or they could wait for the demons to come through the passage.
There was no easy way out.
Edwin Hector spoke up.
“If the passage to the Demon World opens, does that mean they’ll use all their power to merge with our world?” he asked.
“That’s right,” Lucas confirmed.
“Your Majesty,” Edwin continued, “this disaster is really happening. We can’t stop it from coming to our world. I think we should attack the Demon World, like you said before. I’ve seen how dark magic has hurt the people of Hector. If we fight the demons in our own territory, even if we win, it won’t be a victory we can celebrate.”
He chose to attack.
It was a brave choice.
If dark magic entered their world, the same problems that Hector had with the crops could happen again.
Edwin Hector was worried about that.
If war was unavoidable, he thought they should try to protect their own lands.
Some people agreed.
They supported Edwin Hector’s idea, but not everyone felt the same way.
The last time they met, they had decided to conquer the Demon World.
But after seeing how big the passage was, Chris disagreed.
“I don’t agree,” Chris said. “The size of the passage means the enemy might be much stronger than we think. The Demon World is a place we don’t know. If we go there, we might face a disaster we can’t fix. We have to fight in our own land, even if it means we lose some things. If we get ready for the enemy to attack, we can survive, even if dark magic causes problems.”
“I agree with that,” someone said. “But what happened in Hector was too terrible to ignore.”
“Is there another way?” Chris asked. “We’re going to lose things in a war. Going to the Demon World and winning would be great, but it’s more important to win, no matter what.”
A debate started.
Edwin Hector and Chris, along with their supporters, argued for their own ideas.
Both sides had good points.
Edwin Hector, as the prince of Hector, had seen the terrible crop failures and felt he had to push for a direct attack. Chris’s idea of defending their own land was also reasonable.
In the end, the decision was up to Roman Dmitry.
Everyone knew that the debate would end based on what he said.
Roman Dmitry spoke.
“I don’t think either of you is wrong,” he said. “But we need to decide what’s most important.”
Everyone paid attention.
The people who had been arguing listened to Roman Dmitry.
“Ever since we found out about the Demon World, I’ve been thinking about the history of our continent,” he said. “The Demon World has always been a threat. Whenever it affects our world, a hero appears, solves the problem, and becomes famous in history. I ask you, what have you learned from this history that keeps repeating itself?”
There was no reply.
Roman Dmitry’s followers understood him well. They knew they didn’t need to say anything.
“History keeps repeating itself because people have never fixed the main problem. If we manage to stop the demon world’s attack on the human world, do you think humanity will be guaranteed complete peace? It will not. Peace is only temporary, and as history proves, the threat of the demon world is bound to repeat itself.”
It wasn’t just a hunch.
He presented history as evidence.
The history of the continent mentioned the demon world from time to time, which clearly stated what the main problem was.
“For complete peace, the root of the main problem must be eradicated. Of course, with a single victory, we might secure peace for the duration of our lives. But in the flow of time that we cannot fathom, the threat of the demon world will surely cause problems again. So, when do you think is the right time? Is it now, when the Salamander Continent is unified and I, Roman Dmitry, exist, or do you think the right time to solve the problem is in the distant future, whenever that may be?”
He delivered a clear message.
The existence of the demon world was humanity’s task.
If they believed it had to be solved someday, there was no better time than now, as Roman Dmitry said.
Think about it. The Salamander Continent was unified by the Dmitry Empire.
The future of the continent might change, but for now, they could move towards a single goal.
And Roman Dmitry existed.
No further explanation was needed.
History always spoke of the birth of a new hero, but he asserted that no one would ever replace Roman Dmitry.
A unique existence.
The reason why people like Edwin Hector spoke so readily of conquering the demon world was also due to the strong trust they had in Roman Dmitry by their side.
He posed a question.
With Roman Dmitry supporting Edwin Hector’s claim, he gave others enough time to consider.
A moment of silence hung in the air after Roman Dmitry finished speaking. Then, Chris stepped forward. He had been against this plan before, but now, his face was serious. He looked at Roman Dmitry, then at the others. “I was wrong,” Chris admitted, his voice clear in the quiet hall. “I was only thinking about today. But His Imperial Majesty is right. We must think about the future, about everyone who will come after us. If we can stop this threat now, when we have Roman Dmitry leading us, then we must try. Let me go first,” Chris said, his voice gaining strength. “I will stand at the front, with His Imperial Majesty. Together, we will destroy those demons!”
“Place us at the vanguard.”
“Place us at the vanguard.”
Their intentions aligned.
Those who had opposed him bowed their heads in unison, supporting Roman Dmitry’s will.
It was decided.
Conquest of the demon world.
It was a truly unconventional decision, unprecedented in the history of the continent.
The direction was set.
With the conquest of the demon world as the goal, they now had to discuss how to execute it specifically.
“I will tell you what I have investigated.”
A man in priestly robes.
It was Neumann, a priest of the Luna Kingdom.
Before discovering the passage to the demon world, Neumann and the priests of Luna were given a mission.
“To conquer the demon world, we first need a way to cross over there. Fortunately, the passage to the demon world is large enough to accommodate the number of people we are considering. For teleport-type space movement, we need to temporarily create a magical doorway using many magic stones and prayers from priests. The problem is time. If the magical doorway is maintained for too long, we don’t know what kind of chaos will occur. Therefore, the time to open the door must be extremely short, and we plan to open the door only twice: once when we first enter the demon world and once when we come out. That means it is impossible to send support troops in the middle, and if the conquest of the demon world fails, the human world will face the beings of the demon world when the second door is opened.”
It was a gamble.
If they failed, any surviving humans would laugh at this choice.
For humans would have directly opened the dimensional space that the beings of the demon world were desperately trying to open, thus encouraging the destruction of the world.
Yet, people accepted the perilous plan.
Because Roman Dmitry existed for them, they willingly risked their lives, knowing it was a reckless endeavor.
An existence that makes the impossible possible.
A living legend.
Now was the right time.
If even that was impossible, they thought humanity would be swept up in disaster sooner or later.
Roman Dmitry said.
“The conquest of the demon world will be carried out in a fortnight. We cannot waste a lot of time in a situation where we do not know what plans the enemies are preparing. I will convey the items to be prepared to each country by the end of today. After completing all the preparations, we will cut off the repeating cycle of evil in order to……”
It was then.
In the situation of giving orders, Neumann suddenly trembled, as if having a seizure.
The trembling intensified.
The bewildered people stared with surprised eyes, and Roman Dmitry also paused his words for a moment and watched the situation.
It wasn’t normal.
He knew that it was not simply a physical abnormality, but that he was caught up in a tremendous flow of mana.
At that moment.
Flash!
Rumble!
Light poured down from the ceiling.
Neumann opened his eyes, which had turned white, and spoke in a neutral voice different from before.
“I, Neumann, now convey the will of God.”
God.
People were shocked.
This was clearly God came into Neumann’s body.
Neumann. No, God said.
“Each dimension is strictly separated. It is against the rules of this world for you humans to cross dimensions. If you proceed with the plan, humanity will surely pay the price.”
Flash! Flash!
The light spread out.
People were still in that space, but only Roman Dmitry’s mind was sucked into another dimension.
A white space.
God was there.
Although the form could not be determined, he was certain that the being was God.
“Roman Dmitry. Or, the being also called Baek Jung-hyuk. You must not carry out what you think is right. The price that humanity must pay is you. This world has regained peace because of you, but the moment you try to conquer the demon world, humanity will lose you.”
His ears rang.
In a situation that was not yet organized, God revealed a clear truth.
“The moment you cross over to the demon world, you, like Alexandre, will become someone who breaks the worlds apart.”
That meant he would not be able to live in this world in the future.
