Kang Min-ho remembered the first day he used a skill.
Not being very familiar with games, he hadn’t been able to control the power when it first exploded.
He thought, ‘My body reacted on its own as soon as I used the skill. I rolled on the ground because I shot forward too quickly, and it took me a while to make the dash my own skill. That’s something every normal Hunter experiences. But what Roman Dmitry is saying now is completely new and hard to understand.’
It was unfamiliar to him.
What Roman Dmitry said was completely new and hard to understand.
Roman Dmitry explained, “The Asura Sword Technique that Cha Dong-cheol used was just a basic version. The real Asura Sword Technique needs you to control your magic power just right for each sword move. But the system uses magic power in a way that wastes it. In martial arts, you need to control your power yourself. How you use your magic power – when, where, and how – changes the result, even if you use the same attack.”
Roman Dmitry lifted his sword.
Magic power flowed around the blade, like a visible wind. Kang Min-ho still didn’t understand the words, but he watched closely.
“Whoosh!” The sword flashed down.
“BOOM!” The ground shook.
Kang Min-ho’s eyes went wide. The ground in front of Roman Dmitry had cracked open, like a giant had stomped on it. Dust and small rocks flew everywhere. He had seen Cha Dong-cheol use the Asura Sword Technique, but never with such power.
He couldn’t help but be amazed.
To think that such unbelievable power could come from a simple swing. From that moment on, he listened carefully to everything Roman Dmitry said.
Roman Dmitry continued, “Everything in this world has a process. Whether it’s the skills you use or the martial arts I teach, the results come from the process you put in. So, don’t just let the system do everything for you. If you want to be truly good, you need to learn to control every step yourself.”
He explained it calmly, step by step.
In his previous life, Roman Dmitry had taught martial arts to people who knew nothing about them. Because of that, it was easy for him to explain things in a way Kang Min-ho could understand.
After a while, Kang Min-ho started practicing with his sword, trying out what he had learned.
Thanks to the system, magic power had already built up in his body. He tried to move that power according to the Asura Sword Technique.
On the first day, Kang Min-ho didn’t get anything right.
His sword swings were clumsy, and he watched the sun set feeling disappointed.
But from that day on, after Roman Dmitry had shared all his knowledge, Kang Min-ho went to the empty training ground alone, swinging his sword from sunrise to sunset.
He still thought it seemed a bit crazy.
However, Roman Dmitry had shown his skill by defeating the ant soldiers and Red Moon, so Kang Min-ho believed everything he said.
As an E-rank Hunter, at the bottom of the ladder, Kang Min-ho hadn’t achieved anything yet. So, he listened to Roman Dmitry’s teachings with an open mind.
Several days passed.
He gathered a little bit of magic power in his core.
On the day he first felt it, Kang Min-ho saw a rock shatter when his sword hit it.
“Wham! Rumble!”
“Ha, haha.”
He laughed, feeling confused but happy.
He thought, ‘My choice was right.’
He didn’t know how Roman Dmitry could teach him this special ability, but he was someone that an E-rank Hunter like him would never meet normally.
He had many questions about Roman Dmitry: How was he so powerful? What secrets were hidden in the name Dmitry?
These questions made him curious, but he didn’t want to pry into things that Roman Dmitry hadn’t shared himself.
What he knew for sure was that no matter what secrets Roman Dmitry had, Kang Min-ho himself was getting stronger.
He gripped his sword tightly.
He believed that by staying with Roman Dmitry, he would become strong enough to protect his daughter from any danger. While Kang Min-ho trained hard, things were happening quickly at the government building.
Immediately after leaving Roman Dmitry, Lee Tae-sung went back to the government building and asked Kim Jun-hyuk,
“Was there a reason to go that far? It’s clear that he has other plans.”
Lee Tae-sung had wanted to make a scene. The idea that one person could take over Incheon was an insult to him and Kim Jun-hyuk.
Kim Jun-hyuk replied, “Like you said, there was no reason to follow his plans. But what matters to me is how we can use him for Incheon, even if he has other motives. If he gets rid of the ants to prove himself, Incheon benefits. If someone tries to interfere, we can stop them. And if he solves all the problems on his own, then the situation changes.”
“Are you really thinking of handing over Incheon?”
“It doesn’t matter who leads Incheon,” Kim Jun-hyuk said. “If someone capable takes my place and keeps the people of Incheon safe, I’ll gladly step down and help them. Besides, this problem isn’t that complicated. Has anyone ever tried to use Incheon like this before? The central government only sees us as sacrifices. This means that the city we built isn’t as great as we thought.”
He sounded bitter.
Kim Jun-hyuk reached into his pocket and continued, “What’s important to me is anything that helps Incheon, even a little bit. If those guys in the central government had at least kept us safe while using us, I would have become their loyal dog a long time ago.”
Click.
He put a cigarette in his mouth.
Being the mayor of Incheon wasn’t as great as it seemed.
He was just a regular person, struggling to prepare for the next disaster that could happen at any time.
He took a long drag of his cigarette.
Lee Tae-sung didn’t say anything.
He thought, ‘Mayor…’
During the 5th Great Disaster, Lee Tae-sung, who had a bright future, decided to dedicate his life to Kim Jun-hyuk after seeing him stay and fight to the end.
Even now, seeing him worn out by reality, Lee Tae-sung felt sorry for him.
In this chaotic world, it was hard for a normal person to run a big city.
Just then, the secretary opened the door and came in.
“An investigator from the central government is here about the Red Moon incident. What should we do?”
“Those damn bastards.”
Two hours earlier, he had reported the incident to the central government before meeting Roman Dmitry.
He had to report the Red Moon problem because it was a big guild. An investigator arrived just hours later. This made Kim Jun-hyuk think Red Moon had connections in the central government.
He was annoyed. He had been hoping for a few days of peace, but now he had to deal with this investigator.
Kim Jun-hyuk blew out smoke and said, “Tell them to wait. I’ll go down when I’m done smoking.”
As he expected, Investigator Moon Tae-joon knew Cha Dong-cheol.
Cha Dong-cheol had used money to get ahead in Seoul, and that included paying off some people in the central government.
In the reception room of the Incheon government building, Moon Tae-joon waited for Kim Jun-hyuk, looking worried.
‘How could a big guild like Red Moon be destroyed overnight? What happened in Incheon?’
He had been shocked by the Incheon government’s report.
Just a few days ago, he had been making plans with Cha Dong-cheol, but now he was hearing that Cha Dong-cheol and all of Red Moon had been wiped out.
His head was spinning.
Moon Tae-joon canceled everything and rushed to Incheon, arriving at the government building just a few hours after the incident.
There were no survivors.
The way it was handled seemed too efficient to be the work of just one person.
‘To destroy Red Moon so quickly, someone from Seoul would have to be involved, but there hasn’t been any activity in Seoul. So who could it be? Does Incheon have someone that powerful?’
If it was a new group, Moon Tae-joon’s job wasn’t just to punish them.
He should punish them for being so cruel, but if a group with that much power offered to help the central government, they would welcome them.
In this world, power matters more than morals.
Moon Tae-joon had come to Incheon quickly to try and get credit if a new force was involved.
He wasn’t going to stay loyal to Red Moon now that they were gone.
While he was thinking, the person he had been waiting for finally arrived.
“It’s been a while, Investigator Moon Tae-joon.”
“Why are you coming down now?” Moon Tae-joon said, his voice arrogant. “You know I’m busy, so don’t make me wait like this.”
“I’ll be careful next time,” Kim Jun-hyuk said with a smile.
Normally, a mayor would be higher in status than an investigator. But Moon Tae-joon acted like he was above Kim Jun-hyuk.
That was the difference between the central government and the local government. Even the lowest members of the central government looked down on the local government.
Local government leaders often died during disasters, so they had to stay on good terms with the central government to survive.
That way, they could get help when they needed it.
Moon Tae-joon knew he was in charge, so he spoke to Kim Jun-hyuk in a bossy way.
“So, what happened?” he asked coldly. “Tell me everything. Why was a guild like Red Moon destroyed overnight? Don’t tell me you don’t know what happened.”
Kim Jun-hyuk paused.
He had a choice to make.
If he told the truth, Roman Dmitry’s identity would be revealed.
But if he lied, the investigator would do everything he could to find the person responsible.
Of course, he could hide the truth, because the Incheon government controlled the security cameras and all the witnesses.
But if they said they didn’t know who did it, Roman Dmitry’s identity might be revealed later.
Kim Jun-hyuk said, “You don’t have to look far for the culprit. The Incheon government did it.”
Moon Tae-joon frowned. He couldn’t believe it.
“What nonsense are you talking about?” he said. “Red Moon is the biggest guild in Incheon, with over a hundred Hunters. Are you telling me the Incheon government destroyed them overnight? Just be honest. If you’re ashamed that you couldn’t find the culprit, just admit it.”
He was angry.
The Incheon government wasn’t weaker than Red Moon, but they couldn’t have destroyed them so quickly.
Kim Jun-hyuk had expected Moon Tae-joon to react this way.
Seeing his arrogant attitude, Kim Jun-hyuk knew this was how the central government saw the Incheon government.
He thought, ‘Moon Tae-joon is right. Even if I used all my forces, I couldn’t destroy Red Moon as quickly as Roman Dmitry did. Even with a surprise attack, I couldn’t have done it so perfectly.’
He knew that was the reality of Incheon.
But Kim Jun-hyuk had a reason for saying this.
He had made a deal with Roman Dmitry.
He didn’t know if Roman Dmitry would really defeat the Queen Ant, but he had to protect Roman Dmitry’s identity for at least a month, until he knew for sure.
That’s how power worked. Even if a relationship was temporary, he had to make sure people took Incheon seriously.
So, he took responsibility for what happened, to keep his promise to Roman Dmitry.
Once he made a decision, Kim Jun-hyuk never hesitated.
“It’s not a lie,” he said. “I ordered it, and my people did it. The Incheon government destroyed Red Moon.”
Moon Tae-joon’s expression changed.
Both Kim Jun-hyuk and Moon Tae-joon knew that Kim Jun-hyuk was lying.
