The soldiers of Incheon, including Cheongsan, had a vital mission.
“No matter what happens outside the fortress walls,” Cheongsan ordered, “do not leave your posts. Your role is to ensure that not a single monster passes through the first defense line.”
Hours crawled by.
Slowly, Gu Cheol-ho felt some of the tight knot of tension in his muscles begin to loosen.
“…Is that a person, or a monster?” he murmured.
Far in the distance, a lone figure was cutting down monsters.
At first, the monsters had charged right up to the fortress walls, but Roman Dmitry had single-handedly pushed them back.
It was unbelievable, even to those who were watching it happen.
Logically, one or two monsters should have slipped through, but no living creature remained where Roman Dmitry had passed.
Park Gi-tae spoke, his voice filled with awe.
“I’d bet my entire fortune that he’s a monster. There’s no way he’s human. Roman Dmitry is currently fighting tens of thousands of monsters, yet he’s pushing them back. And if I’m right, Roman Dmitry is controlling his speed, fighting in a way that protects Incheon. If he just charged in recklessly, the monsters he bypassed could head towards Incheon.”
“Does that even make sense?” Gu Cheol-ho questioned, bewildered.
“It’s impossible, logically speaking,” Park Gi-tae admitted.
Like their conversation, the people on the fortress walls thought the same thing.
They could only stare beyond the walls with dazed expressions.
Then, a roar ripped through the air, shaking the very walls of the fortress.
“[Kraaah!]”
“T-The Green Dragon?!” someone shouted.
“An S-rank monster in a monster wave! Everyone, prepare for battle!”
The situation became urgent.
It was too far away to see clearly, but the massive green entity was undoubtedly the S-rank monster, Green Dragon.
Roman Dmitry wouldn’t be able to handle that many monsters and the Green Dragon at the same time.
Gu Cheol-ho and Park Gi-tae scrambled to get ready for battle, their movements jerky and unsure as they tried to prepare.
“Huh?”
“Gasp.”
The Green Dragon’s head flew off.
Without even exchanging proper blows, the Green Dragon’s massive body fell to the ground in a single strike.
BOOM!
Rumble!
Their thoughts froze.
Roman Dmitry was an S-rank hunter.
He was certainly skilled enough to face the Green Dragon, but taking it down this easily was a completely different matter.
Even the most famous fighters in the world couldn’t do that.
However, the visually transmitted message proved a shocking truth.
Even after blinking several times to reconfirm the situation, the Green Dragon, which had been exuding a powerful aura until just now, was motionless with its head missing.
Gu Cheol-ho and Park Gi-tae muttered in disbelief.
“…Gi-tae?”
“…Yes, Guild Master?”
“Did the Green Dragon just die in one hit?”
“I think so… but isn’t this something that shouldn’t be happening? If that’s true, Roman Dmitry deserves to be ranked SSSSS, not just S. Who in the world can blow off the Green Dragon’s head in one hit?”
“Right?”
“Exactly.”
“Am I the only one who can’t believe it?”
“I can’t believe it either.”
Gu Cheol-ho grabbed his forehead.
His mind was complicated; he didn’t know how to accept this.
In the meantime, Roman Dmitry disappeared from sight.
He wanted to go to the battlefield and confirm the facts, but he couldn’t because there was an order not to leave his post.
A more boring time than expected passed.
They expected a fierce battle in a situation where the Great Disaster had broken out, but unlike Cheongsan’s decision, they never fought once.
How much time had passed?
Shocking words came from the communicator.
“[This is the first defense line. The monster wave has been annihilated. I repeat, the monster wave that occurred near Incheon has now been annihilated.]”
” ? ”
” ? ”
Gu Cheol-ho and Park Gi-tae looked at each other.
Even without saying a word, the question marks on their faces proved what they were thinking.
They pictured Roman Dmitry’s actions in their heads.
Slaughtering tens of thousands of monsters alone.
Blowing off the head of the S-rank monster Green Dragon in one hit.
Solving the monster wave alone.
Their minds cleared.
The look in their eyes as they looked at each other changed affectionately.
“Gi-tae. It seems we’ve done it,” Gu Cheol-ho said, a smile spreading across his face.
“Guild Master. I think we’ve hit the jackpot,” Park Gi-tae replied, equally delighted.
They were convinced that Cheongsan’s remaining in Incheon, the choice that everyone criticized, was a stroke of genius.
In the rosy future that was painted in their heads, they no longer felt the Great Disaster was bleak.
Roman Dmitry’s radio transmission shocked more than just Cheongsan.
Kim Jun-hyuk, who was in the middle of a battle, also widened his eyes at the words coming from the radio.
“…He solved the monster wave?”
That was an absurd thing to happen.
Why else would people describe the monster wave as an endless hell?
The Maron Church in the United States clearly presented a way to solve the monster wave, but it was practically impossible.
The same was true even if the danger of ‘Red Time’ was simply excluded.
Finding the source while dealing with the monsters that surged in like waves was very difficult, and even if the source was found, the work of destroying the interior through special devices took a long time.
Would the monsters just stand by and watch during that time? No. Even during the destruction work, monsters were constantly pouring in from beyond the dimension.
The worst disaster was a problem that required tremendous sacrifice.
Therefore, at this point in time when Red Time had not even ended, it was impossible to solve the monster wave with one’s own strength.
No, Kim Junhyuk thought, his heart still pounding. Normal rules don’t apply to Roman Dmitry.
He had believed the stories: tens of thousands of monsters were unstoppable, a Green Dragon was unbeatable, and a monster wave meant certain doom for Incheon. All those fears, all those assumptions, were meaningless.
Roman Dmitry had proven them wrong. His actions spoke louder than any words. He was power itself, a force beyond anything Kim Junhyuk had ever imagined. Watching the last flickers of green fire fade, Kim Junhyuk finally understood why the White Wizard, Baek Il, was so interested in Incheon. If Baek Il had known about Roman Dmitry from the start, of course he would want to be on his side. Who wouldn’t?
Kim Junhyuk let out a shaky laugh. “Haha…”
He looked out over the fortress walls. The battlefield was still covered with monsters, their forms grotesque even in death. Just days ago, these creatures would have filled him with terror, like demons from hell. But now, he felt a strange calm. Fear was gone, replaced by hope.
Why Incheon? The question still puzzled him. Incheon was just a city, a port, nothing special. Why had Roman Dmitry chosen to fight for them? But if Roman Dmitry was truly committed to Incheon, if he truly meant to protect them, then Kim Junhyuk would dedicate himself to him. He would follow Roman Dmitry anywhere. Ask him to walk into fire? He would jump without hesitation. Ask for his life? Take it.
All that mattered was Incheon’s safety. That was the only thing Kim Junhyuk lived for.
He raised his voice, shouting to the weary soldiers around him, his voice ringing with newfound conviction. “Everyone! Cheer up! The monster wave is broken! Roman Dmitry destroyed them all! Just a little longer! He will keep us safe!”
To Kim Junhyuk, Roman Dmitry was more than just a strong man. He was a savior.
People said Seoul was heaven and Incheon was hell.
But as hope filled Incheon, despair filled Seoul.
The intelligence chief spoke, “Dobong-gu, a district of Seoul, has fallen. Assemblyman Lee Ho-cheol of Dobong-gu fought to the death, and now the Red Dragon and the monsters are heading to Gangbuk-gu, another district of Seoul. Gangbuk-gu is ready to fight, but they can’t deal with the S-class monster, the Red Dragon.”
“Ahem.”
“Is there really no way?”
A wave of despair crashed over the conference room.
The assembly members couldn’t hide their fear that Dobong-gu had fallen so quickly.
This was different from the last Great Cataclysm, a period of monster attacks. Seoul had never fallen this quickly.
“Right now, there is no way. Korea survived the Great Cataclysm because of the White Wizard, who was special even among S-class hunters. But now he has left Seoul. The Red Dragon spews powerful flames, so we are at a disadvantage. We’ve called all the guilds in Seoul to fight the Red Dragon. They’ve gathered in Jongno, a district of Seoul, and will fight to the death if Gangbuk-gu falls.”
“What about help from other countries?”
“They said help is impossible. The 6th Great Cataclysm is much bigger than the last one. Even though Korea has a monster wave and two S-class monsters, our situation isn’t as serious as the rest of the world. The United States, which is in the most danger, is using all its forces to defend itself, and other countries are the same. We might get help after the dangerous Red Time period has passed, but for now, we have to endure on our own.”
They were trapped.
There were two options: use the President’s Imperial Guard or bring back the White Wizard.
The assembly members knew the truth: the President, in Yeongdeungpo, wouldn’t send the Imperial Guard.
Kim Jungtae said, “The White Wizard is needed for Seoul’s safety. Intelligence Chief, bring him back to Seoul by any means. Find his weaknesses, and give him wealth and glory if he wants it. We didn’t expect Baek Il to leave, so we need to give them what they want to solve this problem.”
The White Wizard was needed.
At Kim Jungtae’s words, the Intelligence Chief hesitated.
There were two obvious options, but as the Intelligence Chief, he knew of a new option.
“…Actually, I have something to tell you about him.”
The Intelligence Chief said, “Everything I’m about to say is true. I don’t believe it myself, but this is the information we’ve gathered.”
He took a breath.
When he received the reports, the Intelligence Chief felt his heart sink.
It was troublesome news for the government, but it also provided a way out.
“As you know, an S-class monster, the Green Dragon, appeared in Incheon, just like in Seoul. And Roman Dmitry blew off the Green Dragon’s head as soon as it appeared. It only took a few seconds. The S-class monster couldn’t withstand a single blow.”
“Wh-what?!”
“Is that even possible?”
“It doesn’t make sense. So I sent more people to confirm, and the Green Dragon’s death is real. Roman Dmitry even destroyed the source of the monster wave. You all know what that means. If Roman Dmitry really dealt with the S-class monster and the monster wave, then he is incredibly powerful, beyond anything anyone expected.”
The destruction of the source shocked everyone.
The people in the room knew how amazing that was.
The Intelligence Chief added, “Baek Il’s departure seems to be related to Roman Dmitry. People say Baek Il is an apostle of justice, but Baek Il follows profits. They probably went to Incheon because they knew about Roman Dmitry, so it’s difficult to win over the White Wizard. Mr. President, the way for Korea to survive is to win over Roman Dmitry. There may be emotional issues because of past relationships, but if we can bring him in, Korea can deal with the Red Dragon and become a superpower.”
Korea was a weak country.
Roman Dmitry’s appearance could be an opportunity.
The game had changed.
Roman Dmitry’s value skyrocketed.
If Roman Dmitry was that skilled, Korea had to reverse their past relationship.
Kim Jungtae pondered for a long time. After being lost in thought, he looked at the Imperial Guard.
“Arrest Assemblyman Jo Dalsu.”
“Why me… Ack!”
The Imperial Guard grabbed Jo Dalsu.
Kim Jungtae looked down at Jo Dalsu, who was on the ground, with cold eyes.
“Assemblyman Jo Dalsu, didn’t I tell you? You will face the consequences of your past mistakes. If Roman Dmitry is a strongman who will guarantee Seoul’s safety, I will appease him even if it means sacrificing your life for Korea’s future. So accept it. If you refuse, the price will be terrible.”
He was calm.
He, who had sentenced him to death, said to the Intelligence Chief, “Contact Incheon right now. I will speak with Roman Dmitry directly.”
